It's still too early for me to properly evaluate Koharu, but she's fine in my books so far. A bit too young for most people, but she's cute nonetheless and has talent to boot. :D

Koharu is so adorable! :D She's gotten so much better since her auditions, and she's continuing to get better at such a fast pace! I love how she's so confident and she's not at all shy and nervous. I really trust Tsunku's abilities to pick out potential talent, and I have no doubt that Koharu will become a great member over time :D

I do find her likeable, and she's pretty like I expected her to become. It's a bit weird to think of her progress, though, because there's nobody to compare her to (since she's the only one in 7th gen). Hmmmm!!!

While I haven't yet seen enough of Kusumi to perhaps fully appreciate her (because of my limited access to H!P resources apart from what I am lucky enough to be helped with getting on this Forum), I think that it has taken great courage and hard work for her to be the first singer to be the *only* one in her 'generation' of new Momusu members and at such a young age. She is not the prettiest or most talented of the current members, but she gets my vote for guts and determination! I will be very interested to see her progress in months and years to come. She's certainly someone unique and special in the annals of H!P, and I wish her great fortune and success!

Let me preface this by saying that I acknowledge that I'm a total non-Japanese reader and I'm happy to be led by those who know heaps more than I do. However, there's a matter which I am unsure about and yet think that maybe some pple who think they are sure maybe haven't checked it out. So I'm looking for an answer to this query that is more than just, "You're wrong, you dumb f**k, now shut up and get the hell outta here!" Like, I'm looking for some actual evidence of the answer.
I just want to raise the question of Koharu Kusumi's name, specifically which is her 'given' name (what in the West is sometimes called the christian name or first name, except neither of those terms apply in Japan) and which is her 'family' name. I asked somewhere once before and was told bluntly that Kusumi was her family name and Koharu her given name. But I'm not so sure this is correct, and am just asking for some proof one way or another.
1) Kusumi has more of a given name 'sound' to it. There are lots of Japanese girls' given names ending in -mi, and yet I don't know of family names which end that way (so if there are examples, I'd love to know a few). In given names, there's Hitomi, Natsumi, Sayumi, Asami and Nozomi, just within the ranks of Momusu - and no family names ending in -mi that I can think of.
2) In the Japanese Wikipedia, which presumably puts the names in the Japanese order of family name first, her name is given as 久住小春 - and when I put that into Google Translate (yeah, I know the limitations of that, but it's enough for this purpose) it translates as 'Koharu Kuju'. Yet, when I put the first two characters 久住 in it comes up with 'Kuju' and the last two characters 小春 come out as 'Koharu'. So something is going on with the translator to reverse the word order??

Look, I'm honestly happy to be proven wrong, which is why I'm putting my life on the line here and kinda playing devil's advocate, but I just want to clear this up in my own mind. So any genuine help will be appreciated, and any rude blunt comments will be happily ignored.

I saw Koharu in some H!M ep's and wow, she is wery charming, her smile, and face. A good choice from Tsunku, he feels these special appearance that is needed to be a star. I dont know yet how good her singing is. I will try to find out soon.

Well, if you listen carefully when she's introduced like at concerts or whatever, she along with the other members are introduced family name first (as in Kusumi being her family name).
If you have any of the concert dvds in which their names are spelled in english on the back (like Rika's grad concert dvd), her family name is put first just like every other member.
Sorry I cant prove it any other way but I'm tired right now.

小春, is Koharu in romaji, so it's her given name, and when you google Koharu you find other Koharu's that are all female.

I think Google Translate switched the word order around. Kusumi is a surname, and Koharu is a given name. That's why GT didn't bother translating them. The translator probably switched it to western name order. Not exactly the default behavior I want from a machine translator...
Her given name Koharu means "early autumn", or literally "little autumn" (小 = little, 春 = autumn). 春 is most commonly pronounced "haru" (as in the MM concert series); 小, however, can be pronounced a variety of ways, including "ko", "shou", and "chii".
Her surname Kusumi means "old house", and is a combination of 久 = "old" (kyuu, ku, hisa) and 住 = "house" (ju, zumi/sumi).
"Old house, early autumn". The entire name is quite beautiful, isn't it? It feels almost like a poem, or the prelude of one - my mind conjures up the image of a cottage, weathered but full of memories of a happy summer, standing alone in the countryside, on a golden afternoon surrounded by trees with leaves that are starting to turn yellow.

I have to say I didn't really like Koharu at first, but as of this moment she holds the third place of my favourite members in the current MM lineup. She just appeals to me in one way or the other, and I can't point my finger at exactly why I like her so much, I just.. do @_@;
I think she is spunky and fun. Incredibly energetic and charming. I like her a lot, and I started warming up to her after watching her incredibly dorky Dokyu episodes that were subbed by HPS a while back. ^_^ I also actually like Koi Kana :D *boogies* the PV is cute. Too bad mine cuts off at the end T__T

^ Look at the MM DVD Magazine Vol 8 to get a rough guide of who's the tallest. I reckon Sayumi's still the tallest in MM.
But wow wow, look at what koharu's has become. A cute girl with her wacky way of dancing :p But she has really grown much over the last year, she demands more of the camera now and speaks more on air. imo she is even better than Ai on camera. (in terms of conversation)

Koharu's very likeable because she always does everything so enthusiastically. Her hyperness and good mood catches on. She's really perfect for Momusu character-wise :) She really seems to LOVE her work and isn't afraid to show it, and that's why it's easy for me to like her.

I think one of the best things about Koharu is that she was a fan of Morning Musume before she joined which is why she auditioned in the first place. So in effect she had a dream and it came true which to me confirms that fairytales can come true afterall it did for her and thats pretty cool i hope it does not end for her.

Koharu became my 2nd favorite member of MoMusu, and her Kirarin works only make me love her more. She's just too adorable not to love!
I'm awaiting the solo shirt/photoset/wristband of her's currently (passed up the Niigaki one cuz I already have a shirt for her). She makes me feel so traitorous. XD

I see Hello!Online has pretty consistent releases of her appearances but I find no mention of her on Ohastar's site. I think this is horrible to look back on in about two or three years. The only upside I see on this is how she gets to advertise pretty freely to kids. I would really like to see a more mature solo career for her, I think she carries the "cool" image just as well, if not better, than the "cute" image.

Well, I think her actions look 'tense' or 'forced' because she might be nervous. She's only been in H!P a year, so it's kind of understandable, and she's with Morning Musume a lot; doing the 'Kirari Revolution' songs means being solo, and that can be quite nerve-wracking for a young girl.

I held onto a lot of hope that Koharu's singing would improve. And what do you know, it did! And she looked really good in the Hello!Morning performance too. Not only that, she took Kamei's old job as field reporter for the news segments! My hopes are still high all around.

The Bokura perf was awesome too. At first I wasn't sure if she would be able to fit in with all her seniors but not only did she, she was great!
Her hairstyle was similar to that in Aruiteru but for some reason she looked so much more beautiful here. Maybe the dress helped?

Maybe they got closer because of the DJ-chicken segment too? But yes it does seem that they are closer these days. Though Koharu still seems to have more body contact with Eri. Like just hugging her or grabbing Kame's hand at times.

She's surrounded by much more experienced singers in the group, it would sound a bit 'off' if she did it live with the rest of them, and her voice is still progressing; so she's not exactly "ready" to sing live yet all the time.

I don't think so, from a singers point of view. Koharu is very very nasal. And those high notes in 'Bokura ga Ikiru My Asia' were just painful! X_x. Aika may not be great but she is more natural and uses her mouth more then her nose. I like them both though. Defining 'powerful' would probably be Ai T more then anyone xD

Koharu's growing up so fast it seems...compare how she looked when she first joined to how she looks now...and as far as the 'still skinny for a photobook' i can understand what you mean, but look as Sayumin's latest pb - her and Koharu are more or less the same size (height and everything) and she was kinda 'skinny' in her first pb to begin with...i think a tasteful pb (Koha doesn't need to be doing bikini shots right now) would be awesome - a pb that focuses on her natural and incredible beauty would kick ass imo

This is kinda late but I think her song with Sayumi on the Sexy 8 Beat album was really good. The melody was great and so was Koharu's singing. I still can't believe they gave the pinku pair a nice slow song :heart:

As much as I'd love to see Kussun go solo full-time, I don't think I'd like her to see leave Momusu for a somewhat long while yet. She reminds me of Rika in the sense that it would be great to see her leave the group, but not really go completely solo like Goto or Nacchi (hence, my relief with Biyuuden being formed), it's a weird thing.

I really like Kusumi, from when she first joined. At first I didn't notice her at all, but with all of her solos and such, I realized she is SO cute and enthusiastic. It's either really hard to like or dislike her. XD I'd fall in the "hard to dislike her" category. I love how she is always so excited. XD
My favorite song/PV is Balalaika. So much orange, it's my favorite color. *_* And I love poofy dresses. Plus the chorus is so catchy, I'm always getting it stuck in my head. XD Surprisingly I like her singing voice, it's cute.

I just can't seem to understand how other people can say she doesn't respect her sempais anymore just because she's become very popular. If you've seen ANY Momusu backstage videos, etc. it's clear she does, especially the likes of Fujimoto and Abe. Of course she knows they're human, she jokes around with them and doesn't treat them like Gods, but she definitely shows her respects :)

The way I see it is that Koharu is a professional idol now... If she's in-your-face, that's how idols are supposed to be. That's how 4th gen was!! Arguably Momusu's most successful gen!! For god's sake... Successful idols HAVE to be camerawhores, most past successful H!P member were ones (Goto and Fujimoto perhaps not) Nacchi, Mari, Rika, Yossi, Aibon, Nono all had the camerawhoring working for them... So is the current Momusu too bland so that Koharu stands out too much? Huh? Because I sure as hell can't see any FLAW in the way she's behaving. Idols need to FIGHT for attention. Good for Koharu if she goes for it, and bad for others in MM if they let her walk over them.
Anyway, the amount of haters is a good sign of how popular Koharu really is... You think they'd care to whine about her if she was stuck in the background? Naww. It's because she has a successful solo career, several units and a lead position in Momusu that she gets shit on for. It's like she's intimidating. Well whatever really... Koharu is awesome and I wub her and she's the most interesting member in Momusu currently, IMO. She's come a long way and I'm proud of her.

I myself at one time was a Koharu hater. Then all of the sudden, I saw the light. Koharu was not in fact this horrible demon who infiltrated Morning Musume. No, she is what an idol should be: Happy, cute, and as Shi said, in your face.
And really, don't complain about her singing ability. At least she has energy and makes do with what she has. She'll improve. Look at Sayu. And I could make a pretty decent list of idols who can't sing. I personally don't like Ayumi Hamasaki's voice and look at how big SHE is.

Haters be damned, Koharu is the best at what she does. Even if people don't like her, it should be noted that she has all the qualities an idol needs to succeed. She's cute, enjoys what she does, and she's genuinely happy to have fans who support her. Even though she's younger than me, I feel like she's a more mature person than I am because she works incredibly hard and tries her best at all times. I'll always love and respect her :heart:

Her smile is just so, genuine. There are times you can see that hint of awkwardness that she used to have, but it's adorable :heart: And it shows that even though she's grown in confidence in leaps and bounds since her debut, she still has moments of insecurity and just generally being unsure of herself, she's human and also proves again that she doesn't have an inflated ego as some (haters) like to say.

Just recently I have started liking Koharu. Her cuteness and energy won me over in Anataboshi and I had to check her other solo works again, as I didn't pay much attention to them before. And I'm surprised to actually like the other stuff except Balalaika and Koi kana. And she shines in the another version of Resonant Blue PV too! I guess I'm being compeletely transformed here...

SHIPS I really couldn't care less about to be honest, but that's just me.
As for a new Kirarin single, now that's different! They've been some of the strongest releases recently imo but I do much prefer the album releases over the singles. For Kirarin Land at least I preferred most of the album tracks over pretty much all of the singles. If we can get something even half as good as Balalaika though I'll be more than happy.

I agree. Imo she's not a great vocalist at all, compared to say Goto Maki for instance. But still her songs are enjoyable.. and when you see girls on youtube trying to sing Koha songs, you can hear how difficult that really is.

^She puts on a performance and really gets an audience going. As an entertainer that's all she really needs to do well...that and a good song writer of course :p Her performing personality will keep her going strong for a long time methinks.

As I've said many a time before, she always always always makes up for lack in vocal capabilities (even though I love her voice) with her enthusiasm and overall performance. You can't deny the stage presence this girl has, it's as if you're drawn to her whenever she appears. Some vocal skills fade over time, but a bright and fresh personality, and a magnetic presence, doesn't :heart:

Why? I missed my 2000th post :sweatdrop:, but more importantly, this year is all about Koharu! I love everything she's done this year. Papancake is one of my fav h!p singles, so much energy. Her Nikki photobook was great too. And let's not forget about MilkyWay!
I always thought of Koharu like the second Maki Goto. Goto started out with happy energetic songs and later she had more mature and sexy songs. I think that's exactly what will happen with Koha in a couple of years.

I happened to speak to a classmate from China today and realized she watches the Super Girl Auditions, you know the one that Jun Jun joined way back in the day? And since I was bored and wanted to ask her opinion as to whether she could tell which were the Chinese girls out of the members, I showed her MM's RB pv. After sitting through the PV (she was tapping her foot along to the music after a while :D), she said the prettiest out of all the girls was KOHARU!!
I know I probably shouldn't post this here but I'm really happy that non-fans think Koharu is the prettiest! I like Koha so much these days :wub: I still can't decide which was a better PB, POP or Nikki. What do you all think?

Eri : I like "Watashi no Aoi Tori" (My blue bird) I didn't know about this song till now. When I heard it for the first time it sounded really pleasant..it has a really soothing melody. It feels really good whenever I sing it/recording for it. Also, since there's time during the chorus, I can take it slowly and sing it well. (lol, I don't know how to phrase her last sentence)
Q. How would you want others to enjoy the album?
Eri : I'll want the boys and girls at our age to listen to the album..even though its morning musume who is going to sing it..but I think there are some songs that they might not know too. I'll be happy if they listen to it as its morning musume's new songs too. And also, I'd like people of our parents' age to listen too to bring back the memories (when they were teens)

Eri : A place that motivates you to keep improving yourself. Whenever I go home and I'm alone I'll tend to lose the motivation. When you're in the group, there are other cute girls around too. It'll remind me that I can't not lose to anyone. Its probably a place whereby you'll have to keep in mind that you're in a group.
(Well, basically, she's talking about rivalry. B'cos of the rivalry, she's motivated to work. Not really disappointed with her answer, but I was expecting things like "Friendship" and such. But its great to hear that someone who is KY actually cares about rivalries)

Eri : I'm envious of Kansai's dialect. I do hear Kansai dialect every now and then..like "nandeyanen" (Kansai dialect)...I wanna tsukkomi it.

Koharu: I like Pinponpan Taisou the most. When I first heard the song, I felt an electric surge around me and I thought to myself "This song is not an ordinary song!" When I actually sang the song, we normally record songs in seperate parts but it went very smoothly and I managed to sing the song in various different ways. Besides singing it in an energetic manner, I think I've managed to sing the song in my own way too.
Q. What is Morning Musume to you?
Koharu: The group is made up of girls of different ages and from different places so we each have our differences and out characters are all different. But when we sing together we become as one.
Q. Whats your impression of Kansai?
Koharu: I love Kansai, my all time favorite place is Osaka. The people here in Osaka are very warm and friendly, even when you talk to them you can feel the warmth. At that point, I thought to myself that I propably could stay here, thats how much I love this place.

Koharu made loads of miracles this year Milky way her PB's anyting she does its great.
I wished her song "Pinponpan Taisou" where released as her single, I'm sure she would outsell morning musume and H!P in sales. Her song is just so great. It's the best song on cover you such a shame they wasted in on MM's album it could be a great solo single for her. And Koharu is second highest H!P seller of this year after Resonant blue, since she's the miracle member I wasn't surprised tho. I hoped the outsells all again and does a hatrick. Maybe next year she get's a few more projects and some good songs, and loads of PB's.

It looks like today (3/27) the last episode of Kirarin Revolution will air. The title of the last episode is "きらりん☆アイドルレボリューション(最終回)" "Kirarin☆Idol Revolution (last time)".

There are a lot of Morning Musume songs that a lot of people can empathise with, but I hope people will listen to this one and feel a brand new kind of appeal to it.

I definitely noticed this as well. Was she this sedate in DVD mag 20?
On the other hand, as noted by the other members in DM24, MM is getting a cooler image. Guruguru Jump was the minority on the album.

^ Well I've noticed that recently since they started splitting the girls up to appear on shows she was always pretty calm during those times. She still gets excited but I think since Kirarin Revolution has ended and since they are having the girls work more on their own instead of having the group to depend on she has matured somewhat.
Even Reina said Koharu can be pretty calm and serious but that she gets completely excited and hyper at some things.

She's always preferred the cool and mature image, as she said herself. Honestly, I think at times she was told to genki everything up as much as possible, especially since she was still doing KR. It was to 'keep up appearances' in a way.
But now that KR is over, I'm sure she can mellow things down a bit more. Don't get me wrong though, she's naturally always been a hyper and excitable girl. This is the idol that stuffs herself with chocolate before concerts after all XD

Help! I'm losing touch with Koharu. Slowly her songs are disappearing on my iPod and I hardly see any footage of her at all anymore. I didn't like her Fuyu album, I didn't like 9 Disc and I didn't like Happy Sunday :( so I guess that's why I haven't been paying much attention to her lately.. A little Koharu story for all of you! My friend was in a room with only a few people to get the signatures from the girls at AX when (above them) passes Morning Musume! They could see them from above because of a window (I'm typing this from memory of what he told me, he didn't write this down) and apparently Koharu was feeling...playful. She passed the window then took a few steps back to look at the group.

My Koharu story: One day in 2006 I was on youtube looking up an actress from PGSM and somehow stumbled across this video: Tsukishima Kirari starring Kusumi Koharu Koi Kana (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4TKa9mQ3Ws#normal) . I thought it was the cutest thing ever so I immediately searched Youtube for Kusumi Koharu. I was really confused when I kept getting all these videos with like 50 girls in them (Go Girl Koi no Victory came up a lot) so I did some research and that is how I discovered Morning Musume. Now I am like completely obsessed with H!P and I know like everything all thanks to Koharu. :P
My favourite thing about Koharu: I love how no matter what Koharu doesn't change. She is always optimistic and energetic even when it seems like she should be upset. If there is one thing all the members have said about her is that she never lets anything get her down.

My Koharu story: I tend to just ignore the things in H!P that annoy me, and focus on the parts that catch my eye, so Koharu flew under the radar for a long time. Unfortunately, the "Miracle" and "Ace" tags also worked against her IMO because she was no Goto Maki. But I still noticed that the girl was going to be quite the looker. Even before I was a fan I used one of her GORGEOUS closeups (http://www.americanwota.com/graphics_mmpvcaps/mmpv-4444.jpg)from Egao Yes Nude in one of my sketches. (http://www.majhost.com/gallery/Rayle/sgen/img003.jpg) Then, I saw a clip of her Haromoni@ dubs, and she looked so serious while doing it, and it really hit me that this girl works so hard that we don't even see it. (Niigaki even says this about her) So I started building a healthy respect for her, and then her dancing skillz really started showing up with Resonant Blue. I was pretty much sold after Resonant live, with her dance solo in Purple Wind, and OnDiet's MC translations showing her spunk.

I'm really bad when it comes to learning the girls' names, particularly during MM auditions. However, I distinctly remember noticing Koharu and thinking that she'd be picked, if for no other reason than the fact that I thought the other finalists were "forcing" themselves too much whereas Koharu just seemed to "be herself."

Gotta say, it's her natural dorkiness. Also, you can tell that she has so much fun and she's not worried about if she looks stupid doing it.

My Koharu story: To be perfectly honest, I hated Koharu at first. Majorly. Her voice was bad, and she wasn't cute (when I first found momusu...). But as I got to know H!P better, she grew on me, and now I just love her so much. xD
Actually, I had a fun little moment with Koharu at AX. During the autograph session, when she was about to sign myself, she was like, "Here?" in English. So, I replied in English, "Anywhere! :D" and she looked up at me with THE cutest eyes ever with this total "...huh?" expression. She was so freaking cute I just wanted to hug her. (Too bad I couldn't.) Btw, she covered her own eye with her signature in my autograph. XD I love it all the more for that.
I wonder if Koharu is surprised when seeing female fans her age. She kept staring at me all of AX, no kidding. Opening ceremony (we screamed to them, though...) and the concert... If she was on my side of the stage, she was looking at me. (Or maybe that's cuz I was in the front row...?) Huh. Moving on...

At first i hated her voice so much, now is ok... but i'm not sure if i can ever separate Kirarin from Koharu XD is just like if they created the anime thinking of her, seriously did an awesome job.

JFC's video makes me all like, "Awww".(And I am freakin' cold fish when it comes to idols) And it just proves that she was that mature from the beginning. She doesn't stutter at all!

Yay for Kusumi week! I still love her. She's so full of win. Not ashamed, just doing what she does.. in her own way. In Alo Hello 3 before the beach race, something like 'Koha, so how are you felling'? and she goes NYYYAAAAAHH KOOOWAAAIIIII. That's SO annoying, but SO cute XD She kicked ass at surfing as well.

My Koharu story:
She was already in the group when i discover them, at first i was careless and since most people told me that her voice was fkn ugly then i back off... for a while until i realized that her voice wasn't fugly but her singing skills but hell she learned a lot while doing the Kirarin stuff, now i think she can sing O_O well everyone can sing, please don't make me compare her with anyone. And btw, she is so cute and pretty!
My favorite thing about Koharu:
HYPER MODE... yeah, she is always full of energy (or it seems that way) i also like how dorky she can be sometimes (lots of times).

My Koharu story: I think she entered at a time when I decided that I was only going to commit to a certain number of girls, mostly becuase I could only afford to collect things of about 3 or 4 members. At first I didn't keep up with the auditions or Koharu shortly after. I think I didn't want to bother since I wanted to focus on my current favorites. Probably through H!Ms did I start to like her. She never became one of my favorites, but I did like her enough to get her first two singles.
A memorable performance: LA. This'll probably be the one for all of them.

My Koharu story:
I always want to support new H!P members, so I was supporting Koharu from the beginning as well. During the audition I thought her facial features were pretty and "new", something that H!P hadn't had yet. Because I have realistic expectations about H!P, her lack of singing skills was never really a huge problem to me. :lol: I'm liking Koharu more and more as time goes by. I think she has a great aura in a group; my eye just goes straight to Koharu a lot of the time when Momusu is performing.

Not a perf, but Resonant Blue PV (that's when I realized how often my eye goes straight to Koharu. It's been happening ever since)

I was never a big fan of Koharu Kusumi but I enjoyed her "out there" personality. she was super bubbly, fun, cutely adorable and entertaining to watch... hearing that she is graduating Morning Musume is sad and i will miss her presence within the group.... I hope she does well in her new path... Modeling I think is what she's into now...
Which btw kinda fits her seeing how tall she is and how well she poses for the camera despite her young age...

I too was shocked to hear that she will be graduating. I know it would sound weird but I do enjoyed listening to her songs in Kirarin and Morning Musume. She was always so happy and active in the group but to hear the statement from Tsunku does make me feel skeptical about it weather did something happen behind the curtains. :smhid

I'm not really a fan of Koharu. I'd always thought she is quite cute and pretty, but she annoys me more than the other members. But after meeting her along with MoMusu @ AX, I like her a bit more, and hearing what members thoughts of her in the MM DVD Mag, made me thinking it's actually not bad to have her around. at that time she rose through the ranks alittle. But now that knowing about her upcoming graduation, I sort of feel sad and shocked. Not just about her graduating, but about how much I'll actually miss her. I guess it's like what they say, "you won't appreciate someone or something until it's gone."
Now I hope that she'll find success and happiness in the future, as a model or whatever she choose to become. I also hope to hear or watch her interact with the members in future even if she won't be with H!P.

Around a month ago, on their individual Ameba shows, Koharu made up a family tree. A listener sent in to inform the 2 girls about it. Basically, Koharu's mother is Eri and her father is Gaki-san. Linlin and Airi are Koharu's siblings. However, mommy Eri only feeds the family with pizza everyday so daddy Gaki-san and mommy Eri got divorced. Then, daddy Gaki gets married with new-mommy Aichan with the 3 children under his custody. Before that, Aichan had already had a daughter, Reina, so the 3 girls now have a new sister. As for the other members, Sayu and Aika are Koharu's friends while Junjun is a banana store's poster girl.
She totally writes her own fanfiction. :lol:

My Koharu story: Was indifferent with the whole "Miracle" tag, pfft I mean come on really. To put this kinda pressure on a kid. The animes weren't much I cared for anyways. I guess it took me to actually witness a concert in person, see em in and about LA at Anime Expo to full appreciate the hard work and dedication it takes to be a Musume. Sad to see her end up in a pretty bare wasteland known as the Grad Plaza :lol:

My Koharu story:
Oh, Koharu Kusumi.I used to do the first because I thought she was stealing too much spotlight just because she was the youngest (before Aika). And I didn't found her exactly pretty or even entertaining (maybe because I was too closed-mind). But since the 10nen unit, I started to see her in a better way. She has a lot of energy and a very genki personality, besides despising all that anime stuff or the super high-pitched tone she used, seems to be a very mature girl (even more than those older than her in Momusu).

Call this an effect of me not being a longtime follower of Momusu like everyone else, but I've recently been checking out random pictures and videos of the group from last year and it will sometimes feel weird to see Koharu in them, like I'm already so used to the new 8-girl lineup. Maybe it's because her graduation happened in December, which is technically last year and we're in a new year now? Or because I've developed the instinct of seeing those no longer in the group as having left ages ago due to the lineup not changing for so long?
Then again, I've always had this habit regarding groups that make subtle changes to their roster, like a particular individual's presence/absence can mark the time period in which the pic/video was taken, so even if this change happened recently it feels ancient somehow (again probably because it's the first change in a long time).
Anyone else feel the same way or is it just me?

^ to be honest, you can tell the difference between changes like the songs have a different feel or the personality of the group changes. Although I am also not a long time follower, many start with the leader and since this is the first change under her "reign" we may not see the long-term effects soon

And now that I think about it, I think the weirdness of seeing her still in the group probably has the most to do with knowing that she would be the first to leave out of the group's most stable lineup. Plus her departure is the first one I've been aware of as it happened, with all other graduations happening long before I started getting into this whole thing, and seeing history develop and move on in real time is definitely different from the crash course I put myself through last year (which I wrapped up just as her graduation was announced).
I'm sure everyone else who has been long time fans are in contrast still weirded out by her absence.

You could tell from that performance alone that all the girls would truly miss her being a part of the group. They were losing a very unique girl, someone who was always positive and energetic. I'm sure Koharu was a great stress-relief for most, if not all, of the girls.

^ totally agree, she was the preppy character they needed and that is probably the biggest part they had for being there for almost three years
Now, ever since I have been a fan almost 2 years ago, I have been critical of Koha and many agreed to the fact of anime songs fit her more (I do like Tan tan taan~) 4 years past and I had thought improvement was very small and not enough to make her one of many favorites. After watching her from the start and up until the platinum 9 concert, it was no improvement voice-wise. Now, I have to say that if it took a song that she miserably failed the first time around during her training, to make what people think of her, I can say she has gone through a great transformation, and it wasn't the best performance (Nacchi wins it hands down) but I can actually say that Koha improved and maybe one song may not say it all but I give it to her

Just finished watching Nine Smile and I must say Koharu was completely in her element the whole concert. She had me smiling from the very beginning. Like Reina said, there's never been a graduation before with so much laughter. It was completely heartbreaking and hilarious at the same time.

But little by little i became a fan hers when i see previous hello morning, haromoni n other videos featuring Koharu. She makes every show so colourful.
Love her spunk n anime like character. She has a nice body but goofy at the same time. Then i found out that she going to graduate from MM. Felt sad and bad for not being a fan from the beginning. Hoping for the best in her future... Hope to see her alot after this also. :heart:

I was looking at some Kusumi clips and man, what a talent.
Kusumi must have had an insane time during the past 6 years. She was a regular school girl, auditioned at age 12 and then became a super star. When the Kirarin Rebo stuff took off, Balalaika even outsold MM! Imagine all that happening to you in such a short period of time, at such a young age. Must have been crazy. Maybe it also related to why she graduated MM fairly soon.. like the highlight of her idol career already happened and it's hard to get psyched to give it your all in MM? I don't know.
She has this natural aura that makes her really lovable. She truly is a perfect idol. Crazy energy, funny, amazing expressions and poses. Just look at the Papancake PV. It's really bland, just a basic setting with her singing and dancing. Yet, she carries the entire thing by her big moves and big expressions.. it doesn't bore for even a second.
Her dyeing her hair must have been some way of breaking with this era. Time for a new Kusumi perhaps. I don't watch Oha-star, but I'm tempted to dl a few eps to see how she behaves. Still as the genki-idol or as a pro tv personality in character?
Anyway, just felt like writing this. She may not have the vocal abilities, but in my opinion Koharu ranks amongst the best of them.

CanCam has put up a video of the cover shoot for their newest issue. Koharu briefly introduces herself at about 1/3 into the movie. It doesn't show any times, so it's hard to tell exactly :P - I have no idea when this was shot, but maybe this means her stomach flu is better?
It made me happy to see her cheerful smile, again! :D

Ok, so Koha is going to be modelling for LAISSÉ PASSÉ 2012 Spring Collection! I am glad to say that spring is a somewhat warm season, so Koha is wearing a lot of summer dress-ish clothes and some skirts (I also see one preview with pants). So this means you can be expect to see plenty of beautiful Koha-legs in this magazine!

I actually noticed Koharu's height on one of the more recent Alo! Hello trips, actually. I remember when they lined up, she look so much larger than the other (except from Junjun). And that's also when I noticed how great here legs were :P
And about the first Asian Ace video. The last Japanese card magician was really funny to watch! It's a shame China lost so much in that, but I haven't watched the second one yet.

Too bad, that was likely her last performance with anything H!P related, or in showbiz.
Apparently she was on Sanma's Young Town with Sayu, on 1/19 and committed career suicide.
She said that Morning Musume was just a "stepping stone" for her to make a career in showbiz, she never really wanted to be in Morning Musume, she decided to graduate at 17 because "she thought that it was still early enough to start over", and how being a model is so much better because she has female fans, not gross male ones, and there is no practicing for tours and concert and singles....Sayu was heartbroken.
Sanma pretty much called her an idiot and told her she had just dug herself a grave.

At around 53 minutes Sanma even calls her "a cockroach in winter"....something dirty that you don't expect to be there but is unwelcome. This was probably because she kept butting into their conversation.

Basically:
Koharu says she never wanted to be leader, and that she'd thought of Morning Musume as a stepping stone for entering showbiz.
Sayu is surprised at this because she says her own dream was to be in Morning Musume and that's enough for her.
Koharu thinks that has to be a lie.
Koharu does say she's happy having more female fans now as a model, but doesn't call the male fans "gross".
What she says instead is that it's tough for idols to have male fans flirting with them all the time.
But yes, she's glad she doesn't have to go back to the regimented group life, and Sayu doesn't think she could anyway.
Really though, this particular 2ch thread is more about Sayu's feelings and sounding like she would start crying.
I don't know if it's that bad, but it's true that Sayu sounded like she was going to be upset, if not for Sanma's following up.
For what it's worth, there was laughing throughout and Sanma and Shouji seem to agree that Koharu's feelings are pretty normal, as are Sayu's feelings.
Later on, the "cockroach in winter" part is something everyone chuckles a little about.
Sanma is a comedian and calls everyone "idiot" and such.
What you have to keep in mind is that this show tends to be a little racier in content with more surprising stories than usual idol fare.
This is more or less how this particular radio show normally operates.
So why does such an admission on this show have such explosive potential to change opinions?
We fans tend to hold our idols to high standards, but whether or not Koharu felt like this is of no real consequence anyway.
She's not an idol any more, and I think everyone other than her die-hard fans is happier for it. This includes Koharu herself.
My estimation of her has gone down a bit from what she's said, as I suspect many others' has as well, but it's not like I'm surprised about this revelation.
When she just joined, I constantly gave her the benefit of the doubt, even standing up for her a bit against her haters.
But looking back, hearing all these things that she says and that other members said, both in Morning Musume and in DMM, I've revised my image of her a bit.
At worst, I see her as a selfish girl who just got by on her looks.
At best, I see her as a heavily career-oriented girl who knows her strengths and how to use them.
The truth is somewhere in between the extremes, and if your current view of her has changed as well, it's probably changed more toward the side you were closest to in the first place.
The thing is, I can say my own opinions are from what I've heard her say and seen her do, rather than potentially inaccurate translations.
My hope is that more people try to be a little more skeptical of things they hear and try to go to the primary source for verification before believing something.
Sure it was kind of a heated section of the show, but if you listen to it, you'll probably think something very different than if you just read a possibly-exaggerated translation.

I was a huge Koharu fanboy. I always thought she was hilarious and I liked the extreme hyper Kirarin singles she put out too.
Listening to that interview, there is no way she joined MM as a stepping stone for her modeling career. She was an eleven year old spaz at the time :lol: However, I think that realization came later when she started having solo success. Listening to the stories the MM girls told about Koharu on Music Fighter at the time she seems like the kind of girl who has trouble following set rules (when it comes to greetings, practicing, etc.) so in that sense I can understand if she was feeling out of place in MM.
Even so, stating she'd thought of Morning Musume as a stepping stone for entering showbiz is just a kick in Sayu's face. She was her mentor and she's still truly passionate about the group. It's fine Koharu wants to pursue her own career, but I don't like the way she presents herself here at all. If anything, she could act a little more grateful towards MM/Sayu/H!P because if it wasn't for them she'd still be a nobody.

Maybe my translations and interpretations were a bit harsh, but my husband was listening to it too and he said that Sanma and Murakami are not only comedians, but are part of an older generation. And they were saying things that were half-joking, but what they were really trying to do was tell Koharu to shut up in polite terms, and she was not taking the hint. She was being incredibly rude and two-faced to Sayumi, who had tried her best to be her mentor, but Koharu just made her into a slave basically and she couldn't take it anymore, was at the point of ripping hair out of her eyebrows before she finally quit. Sanma even called her out to apologize to Sayumi and she didn't. She said "Well, I said thank you..." Throughout the program Sanma and Murakami were saying that she was saying too much, and every time they did she would just say "Really?" She. just. didn't. get. it. She came off as very (wrongly) full of herself and "above" Morning Musume.

I'm just honestly shocked. Most of the other graduates, save for maybe Kago Ai because she was blackballed, feel gratitude to H!P and MM for all of the things they learned and the great memories, many say that MM is like their family. When former members have a wedding or funeral other members show up.
She could have turned it around, and said something else. The things she said were that Morning Musume was just a platform for her, she implied that staying in MM would hold her back, etc. She was also just all around rude and inconsiderate to the other people on the radio show, interrupting constantly and not taking hints like oh, being told by Murakami to shut up several times, moving Sayumi to the point of tears, and being told by Sanma that people would be angry at her and calling her a cockroach.
I'm shocked because she was my favorite member when she joined. I watched Kirarin and played the games too. I joked that she was a "miracle" because she couldn't sing yet she was in MM and a successful solo artist. She had droves of female fans and was supported by them and their families before she joined CanCam. Before she was in MM, she was some cute nobody in a blue jogging suit from a dusty town with bad teeth. By joining MM, she got a full makeover from a team of stylists, dental work, she had to be taught to look at the camera, to pose and smile naturally, she had to be taught to walk normally FFS--she walked swinging the same arms and legs instead of opposite apparently! She had Sayu appointed to be her mentor, but instead of having her teach about singing, dancing, and the finer points of being an idol, Koharu asked her to hook up her phone, her TV, because quote from the radio show "it was easier" Sayumi is an honest hardworking girl and she gave it her all, to the point where she was pulling out her own eyebrows from the stress, and had to quit for her own health. Koharu's attitude about that is "I did say thank you" She says that she wanted to join CanCam all along, well why not just skip the middleman if you don't care about them anyway? She came off as rude and ungrateful in this radio show, and I feel like she is still just using MM and H!P so she can move on to "better" things....unfortunately she doesn't realize that she already had the best she was ever going to get. She is a pretty girl, but that is it.

Koharu was never my favorite. I've always thought she was a spoiled, self centered brat. And while I personally don't think there's anything wrong with someone wanting to pursue their career, what she said was rude, disrespectful and uncalled for. I just feel bad for Sayumi, it must have hurt hearing those things coming from your junior... :smhid

Being told that one is as unexpected as seeing a cockroach in winter, does sound like a much more pointed criticism than the usual 'baka' teasing......
All summer long, you never know when a cockroach will scurry by your feet on a sidewalk, or in your house or a shop.....
But no matter how cold and windy it gets in the winter, there are no cockroaches to be seen....
so to see one in winter is unexpected, and in a disgusted way. (it is a pretty funny line though, I will have to use it sometime)
For a career in Japan entertainment, you don't want to piss off people like Sanma, Akiko Wada, Tamori, Beat Takeshi, etc., so I do hope that someone who is looking out for Koharu, and who has a feel for what happened, will give her advice if warranted.
Some people were standing up for Koharu (in foreign fan community) because she was being honest, but I also question that as an eleven year old, she had a grand scheme to leapfrog over the other junior high kids in H!P onto the cover of every fashion magazine, and finally into the Imperial Palace............(okay, that part I made up)
If she has a magazine contract and enjoys modeling, more power to her, maybe pissing off a lot of idol fans (if she has) won't really do much to her in her current pursuits anyway. But time will tell.
I tend to root more for idols who have made mistakes due to their own struggles in real life and their young age (Ai Kago, and Maki Goto, in her own way), and then try to find their way as adults.
I don't really have a feel for what Koharu is like. I do remember thinking how unfair it seemed for someone that young to get so much of the kind of criticism she got back then.
But maybe she could learn from the great one, Miki Fujimoto- you don't need to say everyithing you are thinking at all times....just an icy cold death stare, employed at the right time, conveys what you are thinking in volumes, yet you can't be quoted.

It's not what she said, but how she said it that's pissing me off. Ok, it's also what she said, the ungrateful brat. And the people that are defending her by saying, "Oh, at least she was being honest, you can't fault her for speaking her mind." Yes, you absolutely can fault her for speaking her mind. She may not be an 'idol' in that her main job is singing and dancing, but she is still an 'idol' in that, as a former Momusu member, she still has a bit of an image to uphold.
And she wasn't being honest, she was being selfish, calling out Sayu as a liar, dissing her male fans and taking away promotion time for Kikka. If the fans defending her like that abuse, fine, but I don't appreciate a single word she said and I've lost what respect for her I did have.

I feel that she is selfish for the comments but I also feel that it is a hard thing to have such expectations and to be behind two generations of members for two some odd years (my honest opinion) Everyone pretty much has said here that she should have appreciated the time she was in the group and her comments are very hurtful especially to someone like Sayu, who took most of the stress of mentoring her.
In the end, if she was out of the music business altogether and said this, it wouldn't change my mind for her (I didn't like her at all) I do feel that she probably was sent to the back because she wasn't ready to take on any the challenges at her age. (My opinion again)
I think in her mind, she felt that no way she was ever going to get anywhere if no one graduated especially when there are five people in front of you and graduations were happening every year for 7 years straight and then 2 years of no graduations and probably wouldn't have one until the following year. She had resentment and said it out of her heart.
I'm on the fence for this, honestly she could have said it after the spotlight had gone and no one would care what she says but in this way, she was being selfish and probably should take some type of punishment in DMM (my opinion again)

They talk a bit more about Koharu's clothes and then get back to the point that Aika is off today so Koharu is filing in. Koharu wonders if Sanma & Shoji remember her from the first time she appeared. Shoji insists that of course they do, they just had an entire conversation with her. She asks them to remember her, and they insist that they do. She says she plans to come back lots, even her agency said so. Sanma jokes that he's got three talkative/pushy people today - the one who's gonna keep on coming (Koharu), the one who thinks she's cute (Sayu) and - what's Kikka's deal? They talk for a little bit about how Kikka idolized Koharu when she joined.
Shoji: Koharu-chan, what do you plan to do going forward? Keep modeling?
Koharu: Modeling, variety television, everything.
Shoji: Oh anything - a multi? [Japanese-English: a "multitalent" is a talento (entertainer) who does things from all genres]

Sayumi then talks about how Koharu really didn't know how to do anything. She had to go to Koharu's house and help her use her phone and her fax machine [everyone is shocked], how to tape their TV shows, everything. Shoji thinks that's probably forgiveable since she was so young, and Sayumi says she was young too and couldn't give a proper explanation. Koharu still thought it would be faster to have Sayu do everything, so she called her over. Shoji says it's Sayu's fault for not forcing her to learn to do things on her own and being more strict, but Sayumi says it was her first time being a mentor so she went all out and before she knew it she wasn't teaching Koharu dancing or singing, just how to live in her house.
Then they talk a little bit about Koharu's hometown. It's cold there. She doesn't go back often.
They talk about Koharu's modeling career - she's having fun. She says it's different from being in Morning Musume, there are no rehearsals. You just show up for the real photoshoot or fashion show and go. Sanma says other models practice on their own time, but she says she does fine just learning as she goes. Sanma says she should think about her selling point as a model and she seems confused, so he basically explains how posing works and how people come up with poses that focus on their best assets. He asks what she thinks is better about her than other models. She says her face. Sayu compliments her long legs.
Sanma asks for her best model face which she calls her "chun" face. This is apparently that face.

Sanma: Yeah, the manager is like "This was really a casting failure."
Koharu: Seriously!? Should I calm down? I got it.
Sanma: You need a cool down period (laughs)
Koharu: I get along really well with my manager. I really love (him/her).
Sanma: Man, you've made me hate the flu.
Sayumi: He misses Aika (laughter).
There's a long section about dreams and stuff that's boring. People who were worried about Kikka being overshadowed as guest - she talks plenty through the rest of the show. The stuff above is really in the first 15 minutes or so.
There's a slightly interesting bit where some questions are asked about Kikka looking up to Koharu. Koharu says she should give up on that, and Kikka responds "Yeah, today was kind of… but… well…" Koharu gives her some advice on losing weight, she recommends running.
This has nothing to do with the "scandal" but it's kind of funny?
Kikka: But don't you think running makes your breasts shrink?
Sanma: I don't see the big deal.
Kikka: No no no I don't want that!
Koharu: I think if you wear a sports bra it's okay. I think it's bad for them to sway.
Kikka: Oh really, a sports bra?
Sanma: Are breasts really that important to your persona?
Kikka: I want to have them.
Sanma: Why do you need them in this job?
Kikka: They're just important to a woman.
Sayu: To a woman, right?
Kikka: As a woman.
Sanma: But now they have all kinds of bras to make them bigger!
Koharu: They do, they do, they totally make them bigger.
Kikka: But don't you want real ones?
Sanma: Ohh that'd be nice, are you going to play a sexy role in a drama or something?
Kikka: No, it's not - I don't play those kinds of roles but…
Sanma: So what were you talking about that has you so busy?
Kikka: The rehearsals for my musical.
Sanma: Ohh I see [blah blah blah promo for her musical] so you think it'd be cuter if you had some breasts to fill out that costume.
Kikka: That's right. It's a musical so I'd stand out.
Koharu: I've got it! I thought up something great.
Sanma: What is it?
Koharu: Sanma-san, um - if you lose a little weight in your stomach, they'll look a little bigger right?
Kikka: That seems to be true. If you're really tiny here it looks bigger here.

There's a long boring stretch of talking. Sanma talks about how life was harder back in the day and shit. Response:
Koharu: I don't like it when people get mad at me. It makes me hate them.
Sanma: Right? You're not used to it.
Koharu: I'm not. [Sayumi laughs]
They talk about the 10th anniversary of the 6th gen and ask what Sayumi's most memorable experience has been in the last 10 years.
Sayumi: I can't really pick one from 10 years but..
Sanma: But today you talked about mentoring this girl [Koharu] and you actually went to her house to fix her electrical wiring…
Koharu: What's the big deal! Wasn't it a good experience?
Sayumi: A good experience!? You don't hold back do you.
Koharu: Huh, did I really do anything that bad?
Sanma: Yeah, if you'd had a manager from Yoshimoto [his agency] you would have gotten hit. The normal thing to do is say "I beg your pardon/I'm sorry."
Sayumi then talks about how her most memorable experience was her first concert in her home prefecture, Yamaguchi, and how moved she was by everyone calling her name and holding up all pink glowsticks. Her family even wrote "Michishige" on a sign and held it up in the audience.
Sanma: That would really erase all of the bad times. Stuff like your helpless junior who you watched out for, and after all that said "I'm qui~tting" and just quit. Even though you did all of those things for her, she thought "I think I want to be a model" and quit. That'd definitely piss me off. [Sayumi laughs in the background]
Koharu: Is it that bad?
Sanma: It's bad.
Koharu: Seriously? Sanma-san do you seriously think that?
Sanma: It's bad.
Koharu: Aaaah…
Sanma: That's the end of that.
They talk about how many new year's greeting cards Sayumi received, going back and forth on the topic. Randomly Koharu jumps in and said "I send them!" and there's a breif pause. Shoji says "Why did you jump in?" Sayumi laughs and says "She jumps in wherever she feels like it." Sanma says she's like a cockroach in winter.
Eventually it's Koharu's turn to read a letter. Sanma says he's worried.
Koharu: From NariNari-san in Yamaguchi prefecture. "To Koharu, being called a health nut is a compliment!"
Sanma: You want to be called a health nut?
Koharu: No not really.
Sayumi: What? NariNari-san went to the trouble to write you a letter. [Sanma is laughing]
Koharu: No no - after I quit Morning Musume, I did some stuff where I was supposed to be a health nut, but...
Shoji: What's up with you?
Koharu: No it's true! It was true! I even put out a book, and I planted crops, I went all out. But it got kinda hard…
Sanma: What was hard about it?
Koharu: When I'd really delve into "health" I'd get headaches.
From there Sanma talks about how it can be bad to go overboard and Koharu says that around that same time her modeling career started so she gave up on the health thing. More uninteresting talk and then Koharu reads another letter.
Koharu: From NariNari-san in Yamaguchi prefecture. "Michishige-san, you really worked hard to mentor Koharu! I'm really interested."
Sanma: You didn't really do it, right? You gave up…
Sayumi: I did juust a little bit!
Sanma: I can't believe you had to go to Yoshizawa for advice. What was it like for you?
Sayumi: I asked her "I'm calling a taxi for her and things like that every day, is this what mentoring is about?"
Sanma: What'd Yoshizawa say?
Sayumi: "Uh no!"
Koharu: But it's not that big of a deal right? Was it really that hard?
Sanma: (Laughing) Uh, uh, well, having the person in charge of you call you a taxi - what were you thinking?
Koharu: I didn't really understand what to do, to be honest.
Sanma: But you just know, as a person. You'd say "I beg your pardon, would you mind calling a taxi for me?" [his example is said very humbly and politely]. That's how normal people would ask.
Koharu: Well I thought she was a great person, I said "Thank you so much!" But I guess I didn't say "I beg your pardon" or anything.
Sanma: She said it [thank you]?
Sayumi: She did say "thank you so much." But she'd call me over to her house in the morning and stuff. Because we lived close to each other. She'd say "Can you come get me in the morning?"
Koharu: I couldn't really get up [in the morning].
Sanma: Aren't you supposed to be the junior?
Sayumi: [Laughing] That's right, but…
Next it's Kikka's turn to read a letter. It's about attending the coming of age ceremony.
Sanma: Oh - did you have your coming of age ceremony too?
Kikka: That's right, on the 13th.
Sanma: Did you go?
Kikka: I couldn't go.
Koharu: It was my coming of age ceremony too.
[Mumbling from Shoji, laughter from Sayumi]
Sanma: Right now we're talking about Kikka.
Koharu: Sorry, I wanted to say it.
[In the background as Kikka gets ready to read the next letter]
Shoji: (softly) Try not to say pointless things okay?
Koharu: Ok. Sorry.
Kikka: Can I continue?
Shoji: Yes.
Koharu: Sorry.
The next corner is mostly about Sanma. Until:
Sayumi: [Reading a letter] "During her own fan club event, Kusumi Koharu-chan answered the question 'What was the most important thing you learned from Michishige-san?' She said… 'Nothing in particular.' "
Koharu: That's wrong, that's wrong.
Sayumi: Are you calling it a lie?
Sanma: What do you mean it's a lie? It's true that you said it.
Koharu: I did, but I wasn't thinking that way. I was asked lots of questions and I first answered most of them with "Nothing in particular." There was another question about Michishige-san and I answered it!
Sayumi: What'd you say?
Koharu: She's super kind, I seriously respect her. I said that. [Sayumi laughs]
Sanma: I can tell by listening to you, you really didn't learn anything.
Koharu: Really?
Sanma: And you [Sayumi] didn't teach her anything.
Sayumi: [Laughing] Sorry, Koharu-chan.
Sanma: It's your fault she turned out this way.
Sayumi: Whaaat? I'm sorry [laughing]
Shoji: Weren't you on a comedy show? [To Koharu]
Koharu: I was.
Shoji: What you should have done is go to watch them first, before you appeared in on TV. [Laughing]
Koharu: [Quietly] That's true…
Next they do a corner where the girls say sexy lines in a super sexual moe anime voice. It's Koharu's first time trying this and she's really terrible at it. She just reads the lines normally. Kikka does the best. Sayu does one well, one kind of lame.
Ending:
Sanma: Are you going to be able come again? [He's referring to how poorly she did in the sexy voice part, like "are you going to be able to pull that off"]
Koharu: I can, I can. I can come next week
Shoji: Impossible.
Sayumi: Next week!? [Laughing]
Shoji: You should take a little break.

I know this is wrong to assume XD
But many do take a route like this to get exposed and they can decide to pursue anything beyond singing if they wanted to. So Koha in being blunt had a mid-career crisis and just took the route with greener pastures. And yes I was being captain obvious :nervous

The last few days I've been reading around about others' reactions and I've found there's three basic types.
The first type are the fans who react by resenting Koharu.
I think these fans are generally the ones who weren't Koharu's fans in the first place, and so were more likely to believe some of the more extreme negative interpretations of what she said.
The second type are the fans who saw nothing wrong with what she said and rush to defend her.
I suspect that these are generally her fans from before, and are more likely to rationalize her behavior as "being honest" or "normal ambition".
The third type are the ones that wanted to wait for a real translation before passing judgement.
These are the people that think the real truth is somewhere between the extreme interpretations taken up by the other two groups and therefore want to make a more informed decision.
Having better facts to work from now thanks to TnB's translation, I imagine that many fans will re-distribute themselves into one of the other two groups. Personally I always considered myself part of the third type, so not much has changed in my own opinion. It's just that now I feel more confident in discussing this whole ordeal without relying as much on hearsay and assumption. During my readings of others' opinions I was staring to find it hard not to get swept up in all the purely negative sentiment going around.
After reading this translation, I am glad I resisted that temptation. My interpretation is that yes, Koharu was a very troublesome member, but I also watched her grow up and improve as a performer, which certainly must have required quite a bit of hard work. Were the things she said rude, selfish, and inconsiderate? Certainly! But I get the feeling that more than those two things, what came out of her mouth was more rooted in cluelessnessness than malice. Over the years I think it's been sufficiently proven that Koharu is supremely clueless in a great many things, so I'm not all that surprised when that comes across in ways that are considered rude and annoying. This episode only confirms to me that she is who I thought she was.
Both of the extreme views have some good points to make. Yes, not everyone is cut out for the line of work they take on, and people generally go into a job with dreams of growing beyond it. Yes, certain things that public personalities feel should be kept unsaid for the sake of their image and the feelings of others. But I reject the view that Koharu is completely free of fault as well as the assumption that she actually meant everything she said. To me it's just not realistic to believe a 12-year-old bumpkin could really have such overreaching ambitions from the start. Like I said before, I believe the truth is somewhere between the extremes. Things are never quite as bad as the worst assumptions nor as good as the rosiest interpretations.
Having met TnB in real life last year, I am highly inclined to take her translation as accurate. At least accurate enough to make an informed decision on what to believe. After reading through it, I am acutely aware that there is still lots of room for individual interpretation, and many people with extreme views will only see confirmation of their existing opinions. But at least now those views can be tested from a position more based in fact than hearsay.
As a general disclaimer, I am not trying to kill discussion on this subject. I would in fact like nothing more than more meaningful discussion all throughout the H!P forum. It's just that I prefer to advocate more moderate opinions and discourage extreme ones. In my experience, everyone having extreme views only leads to meaningless flame wars, whereas more moderate views can have more nuance and therefore can lead to more interesting discussion.

I suppose I might consider a non-fan since I never liked her voice and found her more and more annoying as time went by. Still, it's not as if I hate her. Since Sayu went from being my most disliked to one of my most admired members I have learnt tobe more moderate in my opinions about the girls. In any case there is always Tsunku to hate :lol:
But even with the more accurate translations I find her tone excessively rude and selfish. Not only in the matter or MM or Sayu's mentorship. The part where she says that she doesn't visit her hometown very often irks me some; perhaos it's an awful place noone would like to live in (I don't know), but still it sounds to me as if she doesn't want to be inconvenienced even in order to visit family, friends or even get in touch with her former life. Looks very conceited to me.
And let's not get started with the way she treated Sayu as a mentor. While she was very young by then she wasn't much more than Maachan is now and, if you remember when she explained about not knowing how to heat the bath and not daring to ask Sakura (her junior!) to do it you have a good example of a girl that can be inmature, ditzy and even annoyingly clingy at times - yet she's respectuous to others and doesn't expect the world to solve her problems. Which is, in a way, what Koharu expected for UPF to do when she entered MM: build her career and help her to achieve her goal of becoming a model. This isn't just the behaviour of an air-headed and clueless young girl, it's several manifestations of a very selfish and conceited person.
And while I wouldn't care if a talented girl to push her agenda in any way possible, her deaf-tone voice and overall annoying, unfunny personality won't make up for it.

I've been thinking the situation over for a few days now after seeing a lot of angry fan reactions and I wasn't sure if I wanted to post anything about it, but why not?
Having seen that full translation, I agree that Koharu seemed quite callous and I can see how that upset people. Her foot was clearly lodged in her mouth so I guess it's a good thing she ended up in a profession where speaking in public isn't the main goal. :P Still, she's not the first idol to say something rude about the job and certainly not the last.
For what it's worth, I joined jphip in 2006 at age 14 and gradually became a huge Koharu fan. Some of the older forum members will probably remember it, at least a little. She has been and always will be my favorite idol to come from H!P and this scandal hasn't done anything to change my mind about it. I think it's possible to care about an idol for reasons other than having a stellar personality, though that's grounds for liking someone (like Sayu or Ai-chan's dedication to Momusu).
Regardless of the stupid things she might say, that doesn't change how much I enjoyed her as an idol/performer during her tenure in Momusu. She meant a lot to me during a crucial period of my life and I'm glad that as a young adult, she's found a career that makes her happier than being an idol. It was pretty apparent that being an idol wasn't a lifelong career choice for her and I always felt that she enjoyed her solo activities more than group stuff. The interview merely confirmed that, and I'm sure there are a lot of difficult parts to being an idol like feeling beholden to the fan image of you. It's not exactly a field that allows for much personal expression and it just didn't seem to suit her in the longterm. She could have been much more tactful about it, but she's still young and I think eventually she'll learn to be more appreciative of the experiences she had in Momusu that allowed her to get to this point in her career.
I'm 21 years old now and I'm thankful that I became a fan of Koharu's and ended up a member of jphip, I've met some of my dearest friends though this forum and as a result of being her fan. She graduated from Momusu the same year I graduated high school, so in a way I always felt a little bit tied to her. I hope she continues to have a career she finds fulfilling, but at the same time I hope she learns the importance of being tactful and respecting the opportunities you are given.

I am really interested that Koharu has suddenly done several gravure shoots, after seeing nothing much of her for years. Since that controversial episode with Sayu (2013) she did a lingerie shoot (2014) and now suddenly three years later a whole swathe of gravure magazine shoots.
So I'm wondering... has anyone read anything about any change in Koharu's circumstances? I assume she has been working as a model for years now and we haven't seen anything of this type all through that time. So I wonder what has spurred this change of activity?
