AKB48′s Maeda Atsuko stars in new “Hana Kimi” drama series (Updated)

Fuji TV announced today that the 2007 drama series “Hanazakari no Kimitachi e ~ Ikemen Paradise” is coming back this summer, but with an entirely new cast. Instead of the original lead actress Horikita Maki, the new series will be led by AKB48’s Maeda Atsuko.
Based on the popular manga series by Nakajo Hisaya, “Hanazakari no Kimitachi e” (abbreviated as “Hana Kimi”) tells the story of a girl named Ashiya Mizuki who lives in the United States. She falls in love with a young high jumper named Sano Izumi after seeing him on television, but when he suddenly quits the sport, she decides to take action. In order to get close to Sano and help him return to high jumping, she moves to Japan and disguises herself as a boy to enroll in Sano’s all-boys high school.
In the first drama series, the male leads were played by Oguri Shun and Ikuta Toma, though the show also featured other popular actors like Mizushima Hiro and Okada Masaki. The new show will reportedly have a fresh cast, and the setting and story will also be changed. Rather than being a sequel to the first series, Fuji TV’s announcement suggests that this will be a new retelling of the story. However, plot details are being kept secret for now.
The original series averaged 17.3% ratings over its 12-episode run, and the finale reached 21.0%.
Naturally, AKB48 will be in charge of the new show’s theme song, to be released in August, likely as the group’s 22nd single. The center member and other participants will be decided in AKB48′s Senbatsu election, which starts on June 9.
The drama series will start in July and air on Sundays at 9:00pm.

A bit more convincing than Horikita Maki as a guy, but I think the male cast is what's really gonna make or break this remake.

To be honest I'm not very excited. Expectations are gonna be high for these guys. Gonna be quite difficult to follow up the portrayals by the first two. Hopefully they do very very well so I can enjoy it without being disappointed at every little thing. cross dem fingazz.

Actually, I expected Kiriyama Renn to act as Nakatsu (considering his role as Shoutaro in W might suit him more as Nakatsu), but Nanba doesn't seem half-bad either...

My curiosity points for this show has rised up a lot thanks to Kiriyama Renn being Nanba, along with the new Hibari4 lineup...

It's not the same..The only reason I watched the original was for the tokusatsu actors. Won't they remember the story after just 4 years?!
I don't like how it's the same. It looks like a shot-for-shot remake to me. I want to see a gender-reversed version,that would be much more interesting!

Horikita-san is definitely better.
I watched the Taiwanese one once. It was alright,but it was just weird as hell! She was just pulling these faces all the time!

Need advice: judging from this first ep (which I haven't watched), do you reckon I should watch the original one first? Like one would have a LOTR marathon prior to watching the latest installment.
I've read and loved the manga but just never got around to watching the drama except bits and pieces on YT, which were so disconnected from the manga that I couldn't really recognize the scene. Or do you think I should reread the manga to prep myself (cos I've forgotten the much of storyline :sweatdrop:)
I'm sure everyone has their own opinions- just want to hear from differing viewpoints.

^ Personally, I wouldn't go ahead and watch the first one. Seeing as though this non-sequel, 2011 version is out, I would just start with the new one.
But, if you have the urge to finish the series asap, then go ahead and watch the first one.
here's a little something on the ratings so far, if you're interested.
The first episode of the 2011 Hanazakarino Kimitachihe drama , better known as Hana Kimi, aired yesterday in Fuji TV's "Dramatic Sunday" timeslot. The 2011 remake stars AKB48's center girl Maeda Atsuko as Ashiya Mizuki. The first episode managed to get a 10.1% viewership rating.
During the episode the terms "フツメンパラダイス" (Average looking guys paradise) and "演技下手" (Poor performance) were trending in Japan. People were also pointing out the huge drop from last week's Marumo no Okite finale which got a rating of 23.9%. Not all comments were negative. After the episode people commented things as "Ikepara was interesting. I'm looking forward to the next episode!", "Acchan's perfomance was great! It was really interesting. It was too cute" on Maeda's blog.
In comparison, the first episode of the 2007 original version of Hana Kimi managed to get a 15.9% rating and the lowest rating it ever got for an episode was 14,7%. The 2011 Hana Kimi currently has the lowest rating for the first episode among the few drama's that already started this season, but at the same time it was the best watched show on Fuji TV yesterday evening.

Finally got around to checking out the first episode, guess I'll give out opinions.
It is pretty much.. THE EXACT SAME, but with a lesser cast :lol: Doesn't really help that the original one had a stupid stacked all-star cast. Gonna keep the faith and watch on. Though I hope they come up with new joke scenes instead of rehashing the old ones.
The problem I had with the original drama, Horikita didn't come across as very guy-ish to me. Acchan looks more like a guy on this drama, but her voice is super girly. So, both aren't very convincing :lol:
The homo guy is overly homo and very funny though, and Oscar is hilarious no matter who plays him.
I hope it gets better!

I guess the original will be considered better whatever ways, but it doesn't stop me from enjoying the show.
And Acchan has a great "EEHH?!!!" face. :)

That article was from Cyzo, and I heard that every articles on it are "rubbish", can't be trusted 100%...
and Acchan has updated her blog, so yeah. It's fine now... That was just a rumor.

For some reason, as much as I like Maeda Atsuko, I just can't get into this drama. Watched the first episode but it wasn't that memorable. Cast is kinda prettier but that's about it.

I might have a look at some point. The 2007 Hana Kimi is the only JDrama I've seen and that was probably because of toku actors.
