Should I install Norton 360?
Me running a Dell Dimension 8100 P4 1.2GHz 256MB, 60GB, DVD, CD/RW
I dunno if it's me or the weed speaking - but I'm paranoid as fuck and need help with security shit! The virus that hit me not only made my Google links into ad links, fucking turned off my firewall whenever. Froze up my spyware/virus scanners. Then started emailing everyone. Already did the reformat / reinstall XP and shit looks cool
Thanks!
I don't have an antivirus. The best thing you can use is common sense. Just be aware of what you're doing / be careful what you download.
(And this isn't just info for you Daigong as you'll know some of this, just general advice for anyone.)
- Make sure filetypes aren't switched off. If you're looking at a file in a folder you need to be able to see the file extension. If file extensions are set to not display, set them to display by clicking on "my computer" to open a window, then Tools - folder options - view - and untick "hide extensions for known file types".
- Now you can see the file extensions, learn which ones are harmless and which ones can be potentially harmful. Potentially harmful ones are .exe (executable file. a piece of software), .com (similar to an exe), .vbs (visual basic script. often used to do nasty things), .scr (screensaver but often used to carry viruses), .wma .wmv .asf .asx (those last 4 are video files are usually ok but they can be made to force your browser to open a webpage when you start to play the file, sometimes It might look like a DRM request. If you're prepared for this and have you're mouse ready you can quickly close the page before anything bad happens). You'll probably only encounter those webpage-opening files on p2p progs such as limewire where almost 100% of them are fake/viruses.
Harmless filetypes: mp3, wav, avi, mpg, basically all video and audio filetypes except wma wmv asf asx.
- If you use Outlook Express for email make sure the preview pane is set to display emails as text only
- If you use Internet Explorer make sure you have all the updates, or better still use a different (better!) browser
- Be careful when opening email attachments. If it's from someone you don't know then delete it. Even if it's from someone you know you still need to be careful. If someone has sent you an attachment that doesn't look like what they say it is then delete it. For example "Here's those pics I promised I'd send you" and it's an exe file = almost certainly a virus.
- When opening a zip file (or rar, or other archive) never open it from the webpage or from your email, always save the file to your hard drive first. One trick people do is to give the file 2 file extensions, so it will look like filename.zip .exe - with a 2nd file extension with loads of spaces, a lot more spaces than I put there, so in your email you won't see the 2nd file extension and will assume the file is a zip. Only the last file extension is the important one. When the file is on your hard drive it's easy to see if there's another file extension.
- Even if someone has sent you a dodgy .zip file it would still safe to look inside, just as long as you're careful what you do with the contents. You can look at what files the zip or rar contains from within the zip or rar program without actually extracting the file so you can see what the contents are.
When downloading software/apps/warez/etc as long as you're downloading from a "trusted site" then you can be pretty sure it'll be safe. By trusted sites I mean big companies such as microsoft, macromedia, etc. If you're downloading something off someones angelfire page or from a torrent then you need to be more careful of those. When I need to scan such a file I use the online virus scan at
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/I've probably overlooked some stuff but that's the main things I can think of right now.
