PS3 Worldwide Failure (Read if you have a PS3!)

From Europe to the Americas to, well, my house in Australia, users (mostly of older "Fat" consoles, those released before 2009's "PS3 Slim") are complaining that upon booting their consoles up, they're unable to sign into their accounts, check their trophies, use dynamic themes or access the PlayStation Network. That's fine, Sony say there are PSN connection problems, and that they are "looking into it".

Problem is, the error does more than just prevent you from going online. It prevents you from playing certain games offline as well. Even for some consoles that aren't connected to the PSN, like debug units. The screen above is what I was greeted with on a retail console when attempting to play Heavy Rain, and pressing out of it simply reboots the PS3, returning you to the main menu screen. It's the same story for other games that feature dynamic trophy support.

PSN games are no different; I tried to boot up "Flower", only to be greeted with a similar message about failed copyright protection, and it was right back to the XMB.

Sony say "stay tuned" for updates on the problem. In turn, we've emailed Sony for comment and will update if we hear anything more.

If you have an older model PS3, best not to turn it on until the problem is fixed.

I'm pretty disappointed in Sony right now, even though my Slim isn't among the affected models.

Lol Sony : hardware failure since PS1, nothing has specially changed.

I was watching bluray yesterday on my old fat buddy and everything went fine.

I will monitoring french forums as well, btw thanks for the info !

Edit : WTF ?!!!
1/ It seems to be a creepy bug about february/march, not affected by an update but directly from the firmware.
If my fat dies, I'll quickly take a slim for GOW3...  :ph43r: (and burn Sony France offices...   )

2/ Mmmh, apparently, the PS3 could be affected if it was on during the day change.

Well, my fat is concerned (I've checked serial number...)

People advise me waiting for tomorrow... maybe I have a little chance to avoid the bug...
Btw, live report here : http://twitter.com/SonyPlayStation

I was coming in here just to complain about this.
What's up with this generation of consoles ? I had a 360 that broke 3 times, a playstation that doesn't play games (until fixed).

I wonder how they will fix it since the consoles aren't able to connect to PSN. Maybe we'll have to update it via USB.

edit:

Guess what, there's already another Hitler video making fun of Error 8001050F. Well, at least we can have a laugh while (hopefully) Sony fix it.

I don't get it that now? o_o
Does this mean, my PS3 has a bug or something like that? When can I play it without problems?
(Me wants to play Sonic & Sega All-Stars on the Weekend T_T)

If you've got a fat PS3 (not a slim one), you must not turn it on before Sony fix the problem.

It's not only a bug that depends on internet connection but also on the intern clock of the system.

Well, I'll have to wait too... :/

Crap... I have the fat one...
So I shouldn't turn my PS3 on, until Sony gives the green light for it?

As you may be aware, some customers have been unable to connect to the PlayStation Network today. This problem affects the models other than the new slim PS3.

We believe we have identified that this problem is being caused by a bug in the clock functionality incorporated in the system.

Errors include:

* The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000.
* When the user tries to sign in to the PlayStation Network, the following
message appears on the screen; “An error has occurred. You have been
signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)”.
* When the user tries to launch a game, the following error message appears
on the screen and the trophy data may disappear; “Failed to install
trophies. Please exit your game.”
* When the user tries to set the time and date of the system via the
Internet, the following message appears on the screen; “The current date
and time could not be obtained. (8001050F)”
* Users are not able to play back certain rental video downloaded from the
PlayStation Store before the expiration date.

We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours. In the meantime, if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data.

As mentioned above, please be advised that the new slim PS3 is not affected with this error. We are doing our best to resolve the issue and do apologize for any inconvenience caused.

For the latest status on this situation please continue to check either the PlayStation.Blog or PlayStation.com.

DO you know if this fix comes as an update ON the PS3 or as a download content from PC to PS3 (via USB?)

The problem has already been fixed. I was scared for a moment there that I was going to lose my missing trophies. Just sync the trophies online and everything will be back.  :)

Yep, probably seems to be fixed now. You can just select sync trophies from the game part of the XMB.
