Report from the completed New York Mets/Johan Santana negotiations just completed:

The deal bumps this season's salary to approximately $20 million and adds six guaranteed years at $22-23 million.

Damn!! Wonder if the Shea boobirds will fly if he falters a bit in April and May?

I'm in total agreement with starting postseason games earlier and ditching interleague games in the regular season.

Any L.A. Dodger fans here?

I am very curious as to your views on the prospects of Juan Pierre being one of the three best outfielders on the team. Nothing is certain at the moment but Joe Torre favors the veterans and it is probable that Pierre will get the starting nod in LF.

This will hurt the Dodgers in '08 and the team should change Pierre's role to a utility one. This seems to the kind of classic sports argument that divides "traditional" sportswriters/columnists (i.e. screaming heads on ESPN) and the new generation of smart-alecky bloggers (the Rob Neyer/Ken Tremendous generation).

I've been a fan of MLB forever and I'm on the side of the nerds. This issue will drag on and on, and possibly distract what is a historic season for the Dodgers, its 50th in the the City of Angels (NOT Anaheim, btw).

1) a clear roof, and

2) no bullpens

I'm still tripping out that Joe Torre has named Andre Ethier and NOT the celebrated Juan Pierre to start the '08 season as the Dodgers' LF. Torre already had a Tony Womack in The Bronx and I was almost certain that he'd embrace another one in Chavez Ravine.

We'll see how Pierre accepts his new role on the team. MY guess is that he doesn't take it as well as Brandon Inge.

Whoops, not so fast!

Despite Juan Pierre going 0 for 4 with four flyouts, Joe Torre liked the plate appearances and will start Pierre against Dan Haren tomorrow in the Diamondbacks' home opener. "He had pretty good at-bats," Torre said.
