The Dwarf Fortress Thread

Slaves to Armok: God of Blood Chapter II: Dwarf Fortress (Dwarf Fortress for short) is a freeware computer game by Bay 12 Games for Microsoft Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X set in a high fantasy universe that combines aspects of roguelike and city-building games.

Elves being murdered
by me~~
A wealthy, feared fortressSilly Artifacts

Boatmurdered:
Quote
Boatmurdered was a succession game of Dwarf Fortress on the Something Awful forums from 2007. From this spawned an epic tale, incorporating hordes of belligerent elephants, floods of biblical proportions, flaming puppies, and more. After many goblin raiders were fried with floods of lava, there was a brief period of tranquility. Then one of the last few dwarves went mad and slaughtered the others. While on fire. To be fair, he'd given plenty of warnings that he was becoming unhinged, with all of those carvings depicting dwarves on fire, elephants killing dwarves, and a carving of a carving of cheese. How many other fortresses manage to create artifact caskets?

Boatmurdered is basically one of the funniest things ever, and if it does not sell you on Dwarf Fortress, nothing will. It is entirely true, and only represents a small fraction of what can actually happen to you while you play.

Bronzemurder:

Read this as well, it's hilarious, and done in a cute infographics style.

OLD Example Fortresses: -- Place these into the "save" folder. I've worked quite long hours on these three forts.
http://www.mediafire.com/?q0ndnhznjow -- <note: this fort runs slow even on my computer - the most developed & my favorite>
http://www.mediafire.com/?wtlviwnzdxw -- <region17 map - fairly advanced>
http://www.mediafire.com/?zo2ikzmkxzm -- <skane/region7 map - rich, but lacking in construction>
Note: the example fortresses are currently old, and do not entirely represent the current game. I will update them in the future.

The Phoebus Tileset is everything you need to start playing Dwarf Fortress. You can find the hardcore ASCII version on the official website. You WILL need the Magma Wiki to get anywhere in this game, I assure you. DF is a very difficult game at the beginning, but given time, you will consider it one of the best, no doubt. Dwarf Therapist is a tool to assist you in gameplay, but is not required for play. DF Stories has many more stories about happening in DF, to go with my two examples. The DF Map Archive lets you examine many maps that other players have submitted, and you can see some rather amazing fortresses.

The most recent major release of DF added some awesome features, notably the medical profession for Dwarves, as well as revamping almost every aspect of the game. There are regular minor releases with bugfixes and tweaks.

I'm intrigued but that's about all I can say really...I have no idea what this thing is but if I rememember I'll probably give it a spin (likely to be unsuccesful) later this week.

A before and after of the massive bedroom complex + two gigantic dining rooms. Only took about 2 hours to plot and furnish it all.. :sweatdrop:

- I let soldiers practice with silver war hammers, without giving them armor first. No copper or iron to be found! All the items are their clothes, that they've ripped off while sparring.
- That's a volcano. I was attempting to rig a trade depot above to, that would collapse at my command. The depot fell successfully, but the wagons just floating in the air, and I had to rescue them. Oh well.
- I've named a lot of the dwarves after H!Psters. tenkei is the cook. Check out this tasty creation.
- That is absolutely useless.

I'm working on a tower to be filled with lava now, to torch any possible siegers. :jerk:

-- One is of a former pump operator that was toasted by the magma he himself pumped into his death chamber. The second is of an Elven caravan that wisely decided to use a trade depot directly above a volcano. They never bring anything useful anyway..
-- GJ Asmo!
-- shi, our mighty ruler.

lol, my baron burned himself on the lava from that pump operator, and now he's in bed, most likely forever. I've lined up more traps at this fortress, including another massive water reservoir. About to turn invasions on, can't wait to see this business in action.

PLAY IT - Nine out of ten Finns agree, this is the greatest game ever made!

I accept my leader position and if I must die, I will die a hero.

I will do anything and everything to lead my dwarves into victory.

Sorry dai, I didn't check the gender of your dwarf before naming. :bleed eyes:

-- I trapped an elven caravan inside. They and their camels went crazy, and slaughtered each other. It's so famous at my fort, that half the engravings are now about it.

-- Noble leader? HA HA Stryfe and I violated an order from shi, and now we're in bed, dying, because she beat us. Thanks!

You guys know you want to play, come join the fun! o/

-- I've probably lost 20 dwarves now, not to mention the dozens of elves, humans, and hundreds of animals that have perished at my hands.

-- First time I've ever hit this high of a value! :theking

-- Two lovely engravings

What do you want them to make?

If you're just starting out, hit d to dig out the beginnings of a fortress. Then use the stone to build workshops by hitting b. After that, hit q and select a workshop to give instructions on what to make there. After they make it, hit b again and select the furniture item you want to place.

It's as simple as that.
