Jeter is a 37 year old playing a position he couldn't handle when he was 27, coming off the worst season of his career where his swing fell apart. And 2 years ago was then the worst season of his career. And he asked for FOUR OR FIVE YEARS AT $23 MILLION PER.

A. He should be ashamed.
B. If anyone else on Earth in any other sport anywhere had asked for that money he would be called the biggest money-grubbing asshole on Earth. For Jeter, though, the rules are different.

If his name wasn't Jeter he'd be lucky to be making $5-7 mill on 1-2 year rolling deals at this point in his career.

Yeah the Jeter extension was a political deal as much as anything: only possible in the realm/"brand" of the Yankees.

Joe Posnanski asked a good, serious question of Yankee fans a while ago before this all went nova: would you trade Jeter for Hanley Ramirez straight up right now. He said the responses were 50-50.

Amazing. Also not all that surprising. I can only imagine seeing the POST headlines, day after day, for the past several weeks.

What did Jeter say at yesterday's presser? "I NEVER said I wanted to test the market!" Of course, dummy -- that's why Cashman always had the leverage. He's fortunate they went up to $51mil to save face.

Plenty people say that if Boss Von Steinbrenner was alive and kicking, this would never have happened and Jeter would receive his looney A-Rod package. And Yankee fans would love it.

If ESPN blew a nut when Jeter passed Lou Gehrig for most career hits as a Damn Yankee, then you can imagine the nuclear orgasm when he gets hit 3,000. Ow!

Never mind the glove: he's old and fat and unmotivated and possibly still a mental freak. He also played the season with an injured groin. And STILL had an OBP over .400 in 2010. There's value in that, especially if you sign him to a incentive-laden deal for a few mill.

The ChiSox won't keep him now that Adam Dunn is coming to town. The Rays should go after him.

I kinda feel sorry for Gojira. Yeah, he's made millions, was part of glory teams in the greatest teams in MLB AND NPB. And now he's kinda like Hideo Nomo a decade ago: a journeyman, trying to log in service time, as if aiming for a pension. Have bat, will travel.

Cautionary tale, me thinks, of the consequences of consecutive game streaks. I know NPB was "only" 130 games but still, he was playing CF on mostly turf surfaces. Take a break every now and then.
