And Cratos or Kratos was not the real god of war.. That was Ares.
**SPOILERS FOR GOW**
Kratos kills Ares in the original God of War for the PS2. In a nutshell, Kratos was a fierce and renowned Spartan general who eventually met his match with a barbarian army. As the barbarian leader was about to deliver the killing blow to Kratos, he called out to Ares begging for his intervention and Ares, seeing how Kratos could be a useful addition to bring about more war and chaos on Earth, grants his wish and gives him the Blades of Chaos (the blades chained to his arms). With these he becomes more renowned and Kratos continues to show no mercy and becomes more fierce than ever, killing innocent people in the process. The turning point came round when he had to ransack this village and he realised he had, through his own rage induced stupor to kill everyone, killed his wife and daughter. The oracle of the village decides to curse Kratos and infuses the ashes of his wife and child to his own skin, a cruel and constant reminder of what he has done (and the reason why he looks so white). He blames Ares for doing this to him and sets about trying to stop him when Athena asks for help to stop Ares from destroying Athens. Athena promises the Gods will forgive Kratos for his actions as a reward and Kratos, all too willing to remove the memories of his slaughtering of innocents from his head, goes about to stop it. Eventually, with the help of Pandora's box, he kills Ares. He then asks Athena to live up to her end of the bargain. Which she does, the Gods have forgiven Kratos, but they never promised to remove the memories from his head. Thinking there's no way he can ever get redemption, Kratos throws himself from the tallest mountain so he could die. Athena intervenes though and says there must be a new god of war i.e. Kratos, which he then becomes.Hopefully I've explained the story in such a way that you can see that the GOW franchise doesn't need to recreate the Greek myths word for word, it can easily make it's own and it can read like the myths of Medusa or the minotaur. Never played Chains of Olympus, but GOWI & II, I feel, should be the better introduction to the franchise. I think you would like it sweety
And if you think that was pretty epic sounding, GOWII is only more so as it tries to incorporate pretty much every mythical figure you can think of. Zeus, Kronos, Gaia, Prometheus, Icarus, Perseus, Theseus. Would love to see how GOWIII shapes up for the PS3.
