Title: One Shot

The street lamp continued to switch on and off as he made his aproach to the phone booth. In the early morning the street was filled only with a mechanical hum and faint voices from the live houses and bars every now and then. Once inside both he and his fingers quickly remembered.Remembered that all too familiar number. Even though it had been months, something drilled into ones mind from childhood is hard to forget. The phone was ringing.

After the third ring Goto opened her eyes. She could vaguley make out some of the contorded shapes in the darkness. Bookcase, door, clothes, were all masked by a true black that started to become clearer and clearer the more she looked around. She sought conformation that it was infact the middle of the night and swung her feet onto the cold hard wood floor. She took the cheap alarm clock in her hand and gazed at it's bright green digital display. Her left hand made it's way to the side of her face in a pittyful attempt to wake her up. The right went for the recevier.

"Hello?"
silence. nothing but static was audible.
"hello" she repeted.
She took in a deep breath as the person on the other end of the line finally spoke up.
"I read my horoscope today. Said I should talk to the person thats been in my thoughts the most. So I called. Its fate"
"Its paper"
There was a long pause. The long pause that makes both people realize that it is truly awakward. He of course was probably oblivious to it.
"It's the middle of the night. I have work tomorrow."
"Sun 'ill be up in a couple of hours. You should come down the the river bank. We can watch it."
"It's the middle of the night"
She was getting angry. It was the middle of the night and he wasn't making sense. Still, she was happy in her own complicated way that he was calling her in the middle of the night and wasn't making sense.
"I've always only liked things you can do nothing about"
"What?"
"The sun. Its gonna come up in a few hours. Whether you're with me or not. Whether the drunks are sobered up or not. It's gonna come up. Can't do anything about it."
"okay....okay"
Click. The static came in full force now. She kept the phone in her hand even though he was no longer on the other end.

As he put the receiver back on the hook, the dust that had found a home on the top of the shelf relocated itself. His hand still stayed on the receiver. He lifted his eyes up and smiled. Outside the booth, a street lamp flickered.

It was just a short story. Actually, something I wrote a long time ago and just changed She to Goto. Guess you'll have to keep wondering.

No, probably not.

Er....Yeah, about that. Changed my mind. I've never done drama or romance, so I might as well give it a shot.

As Goto got changed, her mind sliped back to the past.

Walking  home with him from school. Starting from middle school and going all the way back to when they were five or six.
Then at the playground. Kousuke standing up on the swing next to her as they killed time before dinner.
Him kicking his beat up soccer ball off the brick wall she was sitting up against working on homework. Over and over again.
"Hey, can you do anything more annoying?"
"I don't know. Never tried."
Then dinners. He always ate dinner at her house. His parents were working and her mother was particularly fond of him. The two of them sitting together  arguing, laughing, together.
Leaving her house and kicking his soccer ball down the street until he reached his own home.
In her mind she saw him going down the street child to adult. Growing up with each step, until he became the person he was today.
By that time she was already at the river bank.

She sat down on the ground next to him. She resisted the urge to lok at him for a good five minutes. She turned.
He was taller than average. Thanks to soccer/football he was built and dark skined from hours in the sun. Even if the tan bit wasn't excatly everyones cup of tea(she always thought it made him look even better, maybe it was due to lack of comparision. She couldn't recall a time when he wasn't tan.), you couldn't deny the fact he was attractive. When ever he needed money she used to advise him to go model or do some AV work. Half joking, half serious.
She turned back to the sun. Now he turned to look at her.
What are we five again?
They sat there in silence for what felt like eternity.
She had a lot to say to him. A lot to explain and  a lot to apologize for.
After convincing herself to say something the only words that came out were a weak
"I want things to go back to how they were..."
It was barely audible and her voice cracked.
Are you kidding me? For the love of....maybe he didn't hear me
He looked over at her. His nearly grey eyes were cold and piercing. She wasn't used to it and it made her mentally kick herself for saying that.
He smiled.
She looked back at him in awe.
Smile...?
He stood up and brushed off his pants. Without another look or word, he made his way down the street.
For the first time in months Goto watched him go down the street again.

Somethings never change, huh?

---------------------------------------

"Maki! Dinner!"
Goto looked up from her magazine.
"Comin'!"
She went down the stairs and into the kitchen. Her family was already seated. She made a face at her brother, andstarted putting food on her plate. Somebody opened the front door, and they didn't do it gracefully. She heard a thud, a mumbled curse, and the sound of shoes being kicked off.
Goto shifted in her chair to get a better look at the person.
Her face contorted.
"What the hell are you doing here?"
"It's 5 o'clock! Dinner time!"
He paused.
"And I will knock that dumb look right off your face! What am I doing here? Hmph. What am I doing here she says."
"Kousuke!" Goto's mother exclaimed, already in the process of getting him a dish.
"It's been wierd without you 'round. Things are back to normal again." Goto's brother said as he added more food to his plate.
Kousuke looked Goto in the eyes as he sat down next to her. It was different from the look he gave her hours ago. It was softer.
"Yeah, they are..."
She couldn't belive it. This was-
"Hey! Get your own rice ball!" Goto shouted, pulled out of her thoughts by Kousuke's chopsticks on her plate.
"I'm a guest! I should be able to have what ever rice ball I want! Your mother raised you better than this!"
"Hey! Guests are invited and wanted! You just show up!"
And then at the dinner table they started a pinching and poking each other, even got some name calling in to.
Goto's mother came back over and threatened to separate the two of them if they kept it up. Naturally they both looked down at their plates and started to giggle, sneaking in hits when ever she wasn't looking.
It was just how things were before.
But it doesn't feel the same.....

Sweet. Thank you very much. I was pretty concerned writting something other than comedy. As long as one person likes it, it's all good.

----------------------------------------------------------

"So how's college working out for you?"
"Good."

Maki was sitting next to Kousuke on the swings at the playground a block away from her house. They had done it countless times before. Just sat there talking. But things were different now. There was an restlessness about both of them that was hard to ignore.

"It always fit with you"
Maki began. She had her knees together with her feet out to the sides as she gently swayed back and forth on the swing.
"that whole student lifestyle"
Kousuke chuckled.
"It's easy to make something fit when it's free."
It was true. Kousuke's student lifestyle hadn't cost him anything. He had gotten a free ride on a soccer/football scolarship. He could have made it on grades, but his finacial situation probably wouldn't have allowed him to get in such a nice university.

There was silence. Crickets could be heard in some dark corner of the park as the two looked at anything but each other.

"I should get going. Need to go back and finish some stuff."
"Yeah, an idol's work is never done."
"Artist. I'm an artist." Goto said, smiling.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah. My mistake, artist."
-----------------------------------------------------------

Goto was crying uncontrolably. Through her sobs she managed to hear the door open.
"This isn't about the rice ball is it?"
She turned to see Kousuke standing in her room, his hand still on the door knob.
Goto didn't smile.
"Swing anda miss." He said, taking a few more steps into her room.
"What's wrong?" He continued.
He had a slight smile on his face, one of those smiles that tries to comfort the other person.
It wasn't working this time.
Goto couldn't think straight. She couldn't piece together any sort of sentence that would make him understand.
"Come on, what are you crying about?"
"Miki."
His smile disappeared instantly.
Sometimes a single word is more effective than any number of sentences.

"How long have you known?" He asked, looking down, off to the side.
"just found out tonight." Goto said wiping a tear off her cheek.
"I didn't want you to find out this way."
Goto started to smile and a few small laughs escaped.
"How excactly did you want me to find out then?"
"I" He still wasn't looking at her. "I don't know. Not like this though. I didn't.."
He looked up at her and swallowed hard. He switched to defense.
"It's better than finding it out from a newspaper, huh?"
"That's completely different." Goto shot back.
She tried desperately to stop crying with little to no success.
"It hurts right? Like your stomach is all tight and it feels like there is a cinder block ontop of it? Even your chest, you start to feel like you can't breathe. That's how it feels right?"
He looked up at her, but she didn't answer. It was obvious how it felt.
"I think...." he paused for a minute, collecting himself, making sure he did this right.
"I think that....Even though I never hurt you before, I never even knew I could. I never wanted to. I wanted to be the person that stopped you from getting hurt.  I think that.... I know that I did this on purpose. I wanted to hurt you. I wanted you to feel how I felt every single day. I still feel it, even now. I wanted you to understand that."
All Goto could manage was "People change."
"People change." He repeated.
She closed her eyes.
Some things don't though...
She felt his hand on the side of her face. With his thumb he wiped away some of her tears. They stayed like that for a moment.
"How long?" Goto asked, opening her eyes.
"Like a month."
He was breathing heavy.
"She's just using you. I don't know why or what for, but she is."
He sat down next to her.
"I know."

After a while Goto stoped crying. They both just sat there on her bed. Goto was thinking things over, while Kousuke was waging war against himself.

Kousuke bumped into Miki one night. They exchanged the standard greetings and small talk. She invited him to dinner and he agreed.
Dinner was just a formality.
After they went to her place.
Then what?
You had the brilliant idea to hurt Maki?
You could've stoped, but you didn't.
Even after that you were spending the night with her two or three times a week.
Why, why does this hurt so bad?
It was just evening the score.
It wasn't supposed to be like this.
What are you gonna do, genius?
There's no turning back now. You knew that the second you slept with Miki, but why is it just sinking in now?
It's because she's crying isn't it?
You could never handle it. Even when you were kids you couldn't stand it when she cried.
What did you expect her to do, smile?
Hurting someone usually implies causing pain.
You go to university don't you?
Then why are you such an idiot?
You regretted doing it the second you saw her like this.
Were was the foresight on this one?

"Maki"
"I just wanna get some sleep. We'll talk about it tomorrow, ok?"
He turned to look at her.
"No, I need to..... you don't get it, just please let me."
He stopped talking.
Goto thought that he looked like a hurt little kid. She soon realized that it's because he was. Just because he changed on the outside, got taller, got older, didn't mean he changed on the inside. He still had the child-like innocence about him, the way he thought, and acted, at least until tonight he did.
She remembered that she saw him like this once before. Just once though.
How old were we? Still had to be young, seven maybe.
Kousuke found out that he was an illegitimate child.
How'd he even do that?
I didn't ask him at the time, because he seemed sure about it. We were young, so we didn't get it. How could we understand why you'd abandon someone? Back then, we just thought if you liked someone and had a kid with them, wouldn't you stay? Wouldn't stay with someone if you loved them? Especially when you're a little kid. You think everyone who loves each other gets married and lives happily ever after.
Tirteen years or so later, he's in this mess with me. I wonder if it makes sense to him now. I think I get it, but I'm not sure.

"Night Kousuke."
He covered his face with his hands, then put them back at his sides.
"Night."
He stod up and went to the door. He hesitated. It looked like he was going to say something, but he stopped himself. He gently closed the door after him, leaving Goto to stare at the ceiling the rest of the night.

Kousuke kept himself composed as he walked down the street, up the stairs and through the hall to his apartment. He opened the door, turned and closed it behind him. He took a deep breath. Looked up to the ceiling, and lost it.
"Fucking idiot! Argh! You're such an idiot!"
From behind him there was a small laugh.
He couldn't hide his shock as he turned to see Miki sitting at his kitchen table.
"What? It's okay, it's kinda cute that you talk to yourself." She said as she unfolded her legs and stood up, moving over to him.
"Miki.....waht are you doing here?"
She wrapped her arms around his waist and put her head on his chest.
"What do you think I'm doing here, idiot?"
Title: One Shot

"Miki" He said, looking over to the corner of the room. Looking anywhere but at the girl pressed up against him. If he looked at her, it would be over. He wouldn't be able to say no to her.
"hmm?" She rubbed her head into his chest playfully.
"I can't. I've got some stuff to take care of tomorrow."
He hoped it worked. He didn't want to lie to her.
Why not? You've already done this much. Does it even matter at this point?
She pulled away, just enough so she could look up at him.
"It's never stopped you before."
"I know. But, I'll make it up to you.....promise."
Before he could stop himself he added that last word. Promise
He leaned down to lightly kiss her on the lips.
"Alright." She said, smiling. "Don't call me later tonight when you regret it though, okay?"
Kousuke smiled.
"I'll try not to, but I can't make any garentees."
She looked him in the eyes. She was smiling, but when he looked back into her eyes....They weren't in sync with the rest of her. A look. There was somtehing else there. But before he could place it, she broke contact with him and went to open the door.

There was a knock at the front door.
Goto rolled over in bed.
There was a knock at the back door.
She blindly searched around for her blanket, and pulled it up under her neck.
There was a knock on her bedroom door.
She readjusted herself.
There was a yell.
"Goto Maki! I know you know I'm out here and I know that you know that I know that you are in there practically wide awake but still not getting up to answer the door. I also know that you know that I know, we both know, after you still refuse to wake up and come to the door I will open the door causing us to have the same argument we always have about this. You'll say not to open up your door like that, and I'll say to answer the front door or back door the first and or second time and I won't have to open up your door like that."
There was a pause.
The door opened.
"You shouldn't open up a girl's door like that" Goto said as she layed face down on the bed.
"You should answer one of the other doors and I wouldn't have too."
"My you're up early." Goto sat up in bed and looked over at Kousuke. He was already dressed and functioning, which was pretty impressive for him.
"You said we would talk tomorrow. And it's tomorrow now."
"Yeah but I said tomorrow, and this is early tomorrow."
"It's still tomorrow."
She knew that's what he was there for. She didn't want to have to deal with it, but knew she would have to. It was nice, the two of them acting like that. As if it was just because he wanted breakfast or something small. Having a little exchange like that, it made her feel like everything was back to normal. What ever happiness that gave her, whatever hope she got from it, that they'd be able to save themselves, she was worried it wouldn't last.
He moved over to the bed, pushing her knee over to one side, making room for himself. He sat down next to her. They stared at each other for a few seconds that seemed to last for minutes.
"First off, I want you to remember something improtant. I'm the victim in this whole thing. It may not seem like it know, cause last night was a little rough, but I have been nothing but abused and manipulated throughout, so... Remember that."
They stared at each other.
Slowly the corners of her mouth formed a smile. He grined and looked away from her.
It was just like him. He would make a joke before things got serious. That one last second of happiness before things got real heavy. When he looked back at her, it was obvious that what he said next wouldn't be a joke. He couldn't keep it, and ended up looking at somehting on the otherside of the room.

"It just happened. That's not my excuse for everything, but for the first time it happened, that is the excuse. It just happened. After that though, what happened after that, I take responsibility for. When we had that confession slash argument deal a few months ago...I wanted, I guess revenge is the word for it. I wanted to show you what it felt like. To be hurt like that. But then last night, I realized that that wasn't what I wanted. At least not to that extent or maybe even not at all. I've always been indecisive though, huh? Even in school, couldn't pick what my favorite color was. This is kinda large scale though. You're not a color. You're my...my.. You know how I feel about you. And I'm sorry. I'm sorry I kept it from you, and I'm sorry that I... Maki, I'm really sorry that I hurt you. Even though I just said I wanted to a minute ago....I don't think it was true. I don't think thats what I really wanted. I was really confused, and I still think I am about everything. Hurting you, that was just an easy way out. And I took it. I couldn't deal with it. I just wanted to feel better. But, it's like even though the reasons I did it are wrong, it's kinda good that I did it. I've never had somebody and now I do. I guess."

Goto was hugging her knees. He really never did have anyone besides her. Durring what he so elequently called the 'confession slash argument' he explained all that. How he felt about her. Why he never dated someone durring highschool, when there were plenty of girls willing too. Thinking that she would realize it, his feelings, and want to be with him and he wouldn't have any comittments so they'd be able to be together. It was innocent and like something out of a movie. She finally looked at him after preparing her response.

"I just want you to be careful. Miki, you don't really know how she is. I've told you stories but, there's other things. It ironic for me to say it after everything, but I don't want you to get hurt.Even though I've done it before.   What you did, and what I did, they don't really compare. You said you feel bad about it. And I know you, I know that you do. But I want you to know that I feel bad about what I did. How I treated you like that and said those things to you that night. I should be the one appologizing, and I regret that it took me this long. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."
There was silence.
".... Do you like her?"
"Like her like her, or just like her?"
"Like her like her."
"No. At least not yet. I mean, we haven't really been dating nessacarily."
They looked at each other.
"This is kinda werid, huh?" Goto asked.
"Yeah. You're the only one I can talk to it about though."
"Good. Well not good as in 'haha' I'm the only friend you have' but good in that we can talk to each other about this stuff. Even though it's werid."
"Yeah."
He stared at her.
"I have other friends you know."
"Of course you do, sweetie." She placed her hand on his back.
"Really, I do. You're just the best one."
"Really? Well isn't that nice."
"I mean, like I have a very large group of friends, probably as large as your fanbase, and out of all of them, you're the best one...If anything you should be honnored, it is a very esteemed position."
They smiled at each other.
Things were okay. For now.

How long did it take me to get jealous?
A week?
No, that's wrong. I was jealous the second I found out.
Hearing her talk about him like that. Ugh. And in public too. Gross. If I overheard it, I wonder how many other people did?

Goto was absentmindedly fliping through a Hello Morning script.
God, now I'm gonna have to go sit there with her for like and hour.
A week or so had past since she found out about Kousuke and Miki. Found out from Miki herself. Well, not excactly. She had overheard Miki talking to Aya about it. Time certainly wasn't healing any wounds. If anything it was getting harder and harder to stop thinking about it. She listened to what Kousuke told her and ocassionally asked some questions. Something was still off. Something was still bothering Goto.
Just then Miki walked by.
Goto looked up from her script.
"Morning"
Fantastic
Miki smiled coyly.
"Morning"
Miki continued walking down the hall.
.....was that Kousuke's sweater?
Before Goto knew what she was doing, she stood up and started to go down the hall.
"Miki"
"hmm?" She turned around.
"I know what you're doing, so stop it."
Miki's face slowly formed a grin. A passerby would have thought that she had just heard a joke, but Maki saw it wasn't the same. There was something sinister about it.
"Goto... I don't know what you're talking about."
Miki seemed to notice Goto staring at the sweater. She smiled even more now, and tugged at one of the sleeves. Miki snickered lightly.
"I didn't even have time to wake up and get different clothes this morning. Had a long night."
Miki moved her eyes so they were looking directly back into Maki's.
"He's so sweet, when I got out of the shower this morning all my clothes were washed, " she tugged at the bottom of the sweater " he even put this in the dyer so it would be warm for me when I got changed."
She looked back up at Maki.
"You're using him."
"Hmph. Like you haven't? What even qualifies it as me using him? It's not like he doesn't enjoy the sex. "
"You're leading him on." Maki shot back, the second she finished her sentence.
"I'm not. Kousuke's a smart boy, he knows there is only one reason I'm with him. It's been perfectly clear why we are together. And it's killing you."
"You're horrible."
"And you're not? What makes me so bad? I'm sleeping with him. Okay. But here you are, completely jealous of me. You had your chance with him. You had a lot of chances with him. But you blew it. Now that there is another girl in the picture, you can't handle it. You don't wanna share. Now that you can't have him all to yourslef, you suddenly want him more than ever."
"You don't deserve him."
"Maybe not, but I have him."
She smilied again, this time brighter than before.
"We'll see about that." Maki said calmly.
"A challenge?"
"A challenge would imply I had competion."
Miki's smile was unparalleled.
Goto turned on her heel and walked down the hallway.

Filming wrapped up with Miki and Maki acting friendlier than ever before. The girls immediately picked up on the fakeness of it, but to the average person, it looked like they were the best of friends. Maki got on the train. The mechanic hum of the vehicle drowned out everything but her thoughts.
Shit. That was aweseome. Way to go. I did seem kind of cool though. It came off as cool. I had no idea what I was doing though. She was right. That's even worse. It did take him being with her for me to realize that I want him.
I want him.
I really really want him.
Like want him want him, take off your clothes right here and now want him, not want him want him, lets go see a movie, get some dinner, and talk about your day want him.
It's not a friend want anymore.
I can't just throw myself at him. She's obviously already playing that angle. That be so werid. Hey instead of having dinner tonight why don't we just go on up to my room? Or, hey I have something really cool I want to show you, in my room....Never happen. My family would be home. Gross. We'd have to go to his place. But she's been there. I wonder where they- Why am I thinking about this? Ughh...

Maki looked out the window at the scenery passing by. After a few seconds she looked across from her at a teenager eating a bento.
Wait, dinner. Ah, he's going to come to dinner tonight. How am I supposed to act normal around him now that I like him? Wait, wait, wait. I have the upper hand here. It's all good. Or do I? I mean she's already sleeping with him, but he's known me for years....But when it comes down to it he's still a guy. Ah, this sucks.

"Hell-"
Maki rushed to the door and  grabbed his arm before he could even get the rest of the greeting out.
"What the?"
"Walk."
"Huh?"
"Lets go for a walk."
"But" His expression grew sad. "it's dinner time..."
"It'll be here when we come back."
"Maki," He leaned over to one side getting a clear view at part of the table. "I can see the steam form over here."
"Come on."
"I'm a growing boy, I need my three square meals a day."
"Nonsense" She said, looking up into his eyes. "You're already twenty and if you get any bigger it will be to the point where you are freakishly tall. It's not even skipping a meal, it is delaying it to come talk a walk with me."
He sighed.
"It better be a really nice walk."
She smiled at him.
"Come on let's go."

As they walked down the sidewalk, Goto's mind was racing. She had butterflies in her stomach.
Why? Why does it feel like this?
It's just Kousuke.
No, it's different now.

She was walking alongside him. She made sure she was close enough to keep brushing her arm up against his, but far enough away so not to trip each other. He looked over at her, a small grin on his face.
"Whats with you?" he asked, sliding his right arm under her left and taking her hand in his.
Goto felt her heart skip a beat as she looked down at their hands for a split second. His larger hand held onto hers tightly in a reassuring manner, it was warm, and calloused.
She looked back up, smiling softly, trying to act natural.
"Nothing, I just wanted to talk to you."
She swung her left arm back and forth, he let his arm go limp, allowing her to swing it back and forth with her own.
"I'm really happy. I missed you. It was hard, us not talking like that." She looked over at him
"Yeah, it was."

She let go of his arm and ran over to a neighbor's rock wall in front of their house.  She jumped and pulled herself up so she was sitting ontop of it. He did the same, having a considerably easier time lifting himself compared to her. They'd done this before. When they were younger. On the way home from school they would climb ontop of it and balance their way to the end of it. It was less of a challenge now that they were taller though. Directly across from them was a house. It was average, but very well kept. In the front yard laid a beautiful garden. Roses, cherry trees, everything was in full bloom, the vibrant color and meticulous details of the garden were impressive. A statue of the Mother Mary was at the center of it.  In the garden was the owner. A rather average old man. He held his wife with both hands, as she braced herself with a cane.
"Just like old times, huh?" Goto said with a goofy smile.

Ever since they were little, on the way to and from school Goto and Kousuke would see the man and his wife in his garden. He was a rather pleasant old man, and they would exchange greetings everytime they walked past. They would sometimes see the woman kneeling infront of the statue. Once they asked why. He explained who the statue was. They followed one of those other religions. Goto couldn't remeber the name of it know. The man and his wife were now smiling as he seemed to be pointing to one of the flowers.

"Eh, not really."
Maki looked over at him, he kept his gaze at the couple across the street who were both smiling as the man held onto his wife's arm.
"She got really really sick. She was never out in the garden with him anymore.    He only takes her outside now when it is really nice to pray."
Goto looked back at the garden and felt a wave of sadness.
"I didn't know."
"You've had stuff going on."
"How long ago did it happen?"
"I don't know, a few years."
They continued watching them.
"Do you think that we'll still be together in fifty years?"
He sighed.
"I don't even know if we'll be together in fifty minutes at the rate things are going."
She chuckled.
"They look happy. To be happy like that... It'd be nice."
"Yeah, it would."
Goto leaned over close to him. She lightly pressed her lips on his cheek, pulling away after a few seconds. He looked over at her, but she was looking at the garden again.
They sat in silence for over a minute.
He jumped down off the ledge. Brushing himself off when he reached the sidewalk.
"Come on, let's go eat."
He put his arms up to her. Goto slowly inched her body off the ledge, his hands gently grabbed onto her sides as she jumped down. When she reached the ground, she stood looking up at him. His hands stayed on her sides, there was barely any room inbetween their two bodies.
"Yeah...let's."

Kousuke's hands lingered on her body. The two of them stood, fixated on each other.
"Maki"
He breathlessly spoke her name.
Ring. Ring.
They continued to look at one another.
Ring.Ring.
She tilted her head slightly to the right.
"My cellphone's ringing." He stated matter of factly.
"College sure is doing wonders for you."
Ring.Ring.
Without taking is eyes off of her, he reached into the frayed pocket of his jeans. He produced a green and blue cellphone. Its screen was alight and it vibrated slightly as it continued to ring. His eyes stayed locked with hers as he flicked his wrist, the cellphone being tossed away from them, down the sidewalk. It skidded on the pavement a few meters away.
The ringing continued, slightly altered from the impact, in the distance. Maki couldn't stop the smile fomr taking over her expression.
"It'll stop eventually." He reasured her.
She nodded her head, giggling. "Yeah? No Kidding."
The ringing stopped. It started again a few seconds later.
"If you'll excuse me for a moment."
Kousuke still stayed. His feet took a step towards the phone but his hands remained firmly in place on Maki's sides. He finally seemed to get his brain and body on the same program as put his right hand back at his side. He turned, as he took a step towards the phone he lightly brought his left hand across Maki's stomach, leaving her with butterflies.  He casually retrived the phone, flicking it open as he kept his back turned to Maki.
"Hello?"
He slid his right hand into his pocket.
"Kind of."
"I don't know."
"Don't worry, I didn't forget."
One guess as to who that is. Man, does she have timing or what? What are the chances? He was going to... I don't know. It seemed like it was going to be something though.
"I'll call you. Unless it is later on, I don't wanna bother you."
Yeah, she'll need all the beauty sleep she can get to compete with me. Or, or, maybe not. I still don't have much of a game plan. I can't be going at this with no plan. This isn't something you just no plan.
"Well then, I definately will, okay?"
Why do I still feel funny? When he was holding me it was-
Kousuke closed the phone, causing Maki to snap out of her thoughts. She walked over to him briskly.
"Come on, dinner 'll be cold." She said as she grabbed his left arm, tugging him along with her.

-------------------------------
Miki had just finished more filming as she walked down the hallway, reaching for her cellphone.
Ring.Ring.
She passed by some camera men. "Nice work today."
Ring. Ring.
Miki reached the stairs and proceeded down them energetically.
Ring.Ring.
"This is Kousuke. Leave a message."
Miki sighed heavily and rolled her eyes. She hit the redial button.
"Hello?"
"Hey, are you busy?"
"Kind of."
"Well, are you going to be done soon?"
"I don't know."
Miki didn't need much help peicing together who he was kind of busy with currently.
"Kousuke, you know that you owe me, right?"
"Don't worry, I didn't forget."
"Good. Will you call me?"
"I'll call you. Unless it is later on, I don't wanna bother you."
Miki changed her course of action.
"It's not just, you know. I..I'm really..I just need someone to talk to."
Miki was confident, but she wasn't stupid. Maki was going to be tough competion, and Miki came fully prepared with a plan B, which had just been set into motion.
"Well then, I definately will, okay?"
"O..." Miki changed the tone of her voice, something tinged with sadness and uncertainty, "..okay."
She closed her mobile device, and smiled to herself as she held it in both hands. Goto Maki had no idea what she was getting herself into

 And either did Miki.

It was an hour and a half later when Kousuke called Miki. The sun had gone down and a light wind blew through his hair.
5...7...3
The phone was ringing. Kousuke looked up and down the street as he paused, hand in pocket, leaning up against a street lamp that flickered.
"Miki?"
"ah, Kousuke."
"You said you wanted to talk."
"yeah, I'm sorry. That was stupid to bother you like that."
"No, no it's alright. I was just wondering if you were ok."
"Yeah, I'm fine."
"Don't lie. I can tell, your voice."
There was a pause on the other end.
"Is it okay if I come over?"
"Yeah, of course it is."
"okay."
Kousuke hung up. He looked at the phone he held in his hands for a few seconds, unable to break away for some reason.
--------------------------------------------

Kousuke had managed to beat Miki to his apartment by a few minutes. He was in the living room when there was a knock. The beat up brown door was opened to reveal a vacant Miki who leaned up against left side of the door, arms crossed.
"Hey." He ventured.
"Hey."
They stood looking at one another. He slide his right foot alongside his left, moving over to the side, letting her enter.
Miki took a few cautious steps inside, sliping off her jacket as she went.
"What's up with you?"
"hmm...Nothing, I just feel." Miki kept her back turned to him, completely emersing herself in her performance. "Did you ever get one of those feelings where you know something is wrong but you don't know how to fix it?" She turned.
Kousuke took steps towards her, shorting the distance between them.
"Of course I do. Everyone does. But, sometimes" He paused, looking over to the side before he continued. " just because you don't know how to fix the problem, there might be someone that could help or at least be there with you while you figure it out."
Miki didn't say anything. She looked back at him, taking in the features of his face.
"I shouldn't of come here."
"Why?"
"Because before, it was fun and then I came here talking like this. Just forget it." She moved over to him, wrapping her arms around his neck.
"No, we don't have to forget it. You don't have to smile if you're not happy. It's okay. I'm glad you're here."
He took his right hand and brushed some of her hair behind her ear.
"Did you really ever think about us as more than that? I didn't. I had no idea what I was doing or what was going to happen, but" She looked up into his eyes. "now, I'm not sure."
"Come on."
Kousuke led her into his bedroom.
She layed down. Kousuke turned off the lights and made his way over to her. He wrapped his arms around her body. She could hear his uneven breaths as he pulled her in close.
In the now dark room, completely hidden from Kousuke, Miki smiled. A smile that paralleled the darkness.

Miki sat up. She proped herself up with her right arm as she rubbed her face with her left. It was probably the most comfortable sleep she had had in ages. She was about to look at him when she felt an arm wrap around her waist. He pulled her backwards, back towards him, she bounced lightly on the bed.
She giggled, and pressed her finger to his nose.
He opened his eyes.
"You okay?"
She sleepily smiled at him as she ran her hand through her hair.
"Yeah. I'm fine."
This was easy. Too easy.
"What time is it?" He asked, trying to see the clock without moving away from her.
"uhhh, It's 8:30"
Both of them laid there, not wanting to move. She opened her one eye slightly to peak at him as she moved her body in closer. He smiled. A sweet smile that threw Miki off gard for a second. Only a second.
"eight.....thirty?" He asked, scrunching up his face.
"Huh? Yeah. Eight. Shit!"
Simutaneously the two of them jumped out of bed. Miki getting caught up in the sheets and taking one of them with her as she jumped to the floor.
"Shit! I have soccer."
"I have work!"
Kousuke ran over to a pile of clothes and pulled out a pair of shorts and a t-shirt.
Miki was on her way to get her coat in the other room when she caught sight of his muscular back as he threw on the other shirt. She smiled another one of her misleading smiles. The prize was a good one, she'd be sure to try a little harder from now on. Just incase Goto wasn't bluffing.
They continued rushing to get ready.
As Miki was about to leave Kousuke ran up behind her, gym bag slung over his  right shoulder. He kissed her on the cheek while he opened the door. On the elevator down she tried to straighten her disheveled hair to the best of her ability in the refelction of the silver walls. When the door open, she walked out into the hallway, him following behind her. She stoped and turned.
"Kousuke?"
"Huh?"
"Thanks for last night."
He smiled at her.
"Is it okay if I call you later?" She made sure to look uncertain.
He took a step closer to her and put his hand on her waist.
"Yeah. It is. Come on."
He moved his hand to her lower back as they walked out the door together.

Goto was fixing her hair in the mirror when Kousuke walked into the bathroom. He was drenched in sweat, his t-shirt sticking to his body. She looked at him in the reflection of the mirror.
"Hey."
"Hey. Came to wash up before dinner."
"I tried to call before."
"Yeah. I was done with practice a while ago but then I decided to go and work on stuff by myself after I did some homework and all that."
"Oh."
"What'd you need?"
He walked over to the sink and nudged her aside. He turned the cold water on and stuck his entire head underneath the faucet.
"Nothing. Just wanted to see what you were doing."
"Uh-huh." He fumbled around for the soap.
"What you do last night, Miki?"
"huh?"
He turned off the water and lifted his head. He reached for the hand towel and ran it over his hair.
"huh? Nothing."
He narrowed his eyes.
"Rrrright."
He looked at the mirror as he dried his face and hair. Maki continued looking at it also. She was looking at him. More over she was looking at how the two of them looked, together.
He stopped, set the hand towel down and looked straight ahead.
They stood there like that for a few seconds unable to break eye contact.
Without knowning what she was doing, or knowning perfectly well and not being able to stop it, Maki turned her head slightly and kissed him on the cheek. She stayed there. Inches away from his face, she could hear him breathe.
Maki brought her right hand across her body and placed it on his jaw. She turned, simultaneously wrapping her other arom around his neck. Pushing him up against the wall, she stood on tiptoe, violently pressing her lips against his. She felt his arms wrap around her, pressing her up against his body. Her nails dug into the back of his neck. They broke apart. Maki, panting, stumbled over to the sink and leaned up against it. He stared at her.
Oh my god.
Maki realized that she had said that aloud as she tought it, but his expresion didn't change. She moved her eyes straight ahead to the other side of the room.
This is-
"Dinner!" A voice yelled from downstairs.
She left the room first. He stayed behind a minute longer. Dinner happened as though the kiss, the kisses, before did not. Kousuke left, saying goodbye like always. But before he left, he looked at her. Like he never had before.

Miki reached for her cellphone.
"Hey."
"Hey, Miki.What's up?"
"Nothing. I was wondering, if you um.."
She paused.
"want to go to a movie or something" She let her voice trail off at something.
"Yeah. Sure."
She made a mental note to try and speed this process up. Playing the vulnerable little girl wouldn't be fun forever.
"Alright. I'll meet you at your place."
"Okay."
-----------------------------------------------

On the walk to the movie theater Miki didn't say anything. She kept her eyes on the sidewalk. First of all she was too busy calculating to be bothered with meaningless small talk and secondly it was part of the plan.
Kousuke bumped into her as they were walking, snaping her out of her plotting. She looked up at him.
"You're awfully quiet tonight."
Miki gave a small smile, on the inside she was satisfied. Things were going along perfectly. She could practially guess his responses at this point. It couldn't be much easier.
"Nothing. It's just" She inhaled sharply. "I have trouble with stuff like this. Talking and stuff" She trailed off.
"It'd probably be easier if I was shirtless right?"
She laughed.
"What? You never had problems talking to me before."
"Yeah but before we were just having-"
She looked at him.
"Nevermind."  She gave and uncomfortable smile after she said it.
"What? You find it easier to just be physical with someone. Cause you don't want a relationship or you're scared or something. So you kinda keep yourself distant. And actually trying to talk to me is harder and a lot less fun than just sleeping with me." His tone of voice changed to something serious.
"Don't listen to me. I'm just rambling. I, I have no idea. Just-"
Miki looked up at him. She tried to hide her annoyance with a look of shock. She had planned on confessing that to him in very dramtic fashion. Oh well, she'd probably still get to use it at some point.
"What are you, psychic?"
"Nah, just, I don't know. I guess I kinda understand it. Feeling like that."
They stayed quiet the rest of the way. After the movie Kousuke walked her home.
And found it too hard to give her just a kiss goodnight.

Miki had gotten a call to from Kousuke. He wanted to go play soccer. Miki knew this was a good step. Being included in something that person feels strongly about is always good, and Miki had some ideas to make it even better.
"You just have to come over this way." He said looking over his shoulder at her, while moving towards a beat up chain link fence.
"They lock the gates for some stupid reason on the weekends."
He started to jog a little as he drew closer to the fence. He jumped, planting his left foot on the base of the pole and reaching up with his arms. Kousuke pulled his large frame up and jumped down. He straightened up from his crouched position and pulled at the bottom of the fence, creating an opening large enough for Miki to crawl trough.
He started sprinting to the center of the field. When he reached the middle of the pitch he spun around a few times, grinning, looking all around the park.
"I played my first match ever right here. I was constantly at this place."
He took in a deep breathe of fresh air.
"And down there at that goal," he pointed with his left hand to the large net " I scored my first ever. Ran up, the goalie was already out of the net, I got the cross, and bam. It was a really long time ago, but I still remember it. Youth huh?"
"Hey if you're so good, teach me that slide tackle thing all the pros do."
He smiled.
"You wanna learn how to take somebody out?"
"Pretty much. Most violent way possible please, Nakata*"
"You, you are just too perfect."
Miki looked into his eyes and smiled.
"Come on."
They messed around for a half hour or so, Miki trying to get the hang of what he was showing her. She decided to test out her new skills when his back was truned to her. She ran up behind him, he started to turn slightly just as she colided with him. He crashed to the ground. Miki was laughing hard as she dusted herself off and  stood over him. He grimmaced looking up at her.
"Aww, what the hell."
Miki's laughing turned to a suprised yell as he wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her to the ground. She landed on her back. Looking up at the clear blue sky she kept laughing. He put his palms down on the ground above her shoulders and leaned his body over her.
"Yeah, what now, Miki? Huh? What are you gonna do?"
She kept laughing for a few seconds and then stopped. They stared back at each other, their smiles slowly fading. She closed her eyes as she saw him start to lower his upper body.
He kissed her. Slowly.
It was completely different from the other times.
It was unlike the rough, sexual kisses they had had before.
He straightend out his arms again, moving away from her. She opened her eyes and stared at him. She inhaled sharply.
Miki closed her eyes again and slowly lifted her head off the ground. His lips met hers and she started to kiss him, softly.
It was safe to say both were no longer interested in the finner points of slide tackles.

*Nakata is a famous Japanese football player.

"You should answer one of the other doors and I wouldn't have too."

the best part!

Anyway, awesome work erink!  Your romance is just amazing!

"Come over in like five minutes, okay?"
"Yeah, yeah, yeah."
Kousuke hung up the phone as he started walking down the stairs of the apartment building. He reached Maki's house in about three minutes. Opened the door, discovered no one else was home, and set off towards Maki's room.
Did I remember to mail that form?
He reached the top of the stairs.
I guess I could just do it tomorrow if I did forget.. But I can't remember if I did or not...
He was at Maki's door.
I bet it really isn't that strict of a deadline in the first plcae. A few days later probably doesn't make that much of a difference.
He opened Maki's door.
Didn't I go mail it that night I went to go get-

"Come over in like five minutes, okay?"
"Yeah, yeah, yeah."
Maki hung up the phone as she started to move towards the bathroom. She looked in the mirror, adjusted her hair repeatedly, and kept nodding as if to comfort herself that she was infact making the right move here. She went back into her room, looked at the long mirror next to her closet and repeated the process.
Well...
Maki lifted her tight grey t-shirt over her head and threw it on the floor.
Slut. Slut. Slut. Goto Maki, you are a slut.
She unbottoned her jeans and slid them down in one fluid motion.
This is certainly one way to go about it.
She heard the door open downstairs.
The slutty way to go about it.
She heard footsteps at the base of the stairs.
This is a total Miki. I am so pulling a Miki right now.
She kicked her jeans off with her one leg and stood in front of the mirror with nothing but her black pinstripe bra and  solid  black underwear on.
Except it isn't as slutty as if she were doing it. I'd like to think that the level of slutty-ness is reduced becuase I am doing it for a good reason.
The footsteps had reached the hallway.
Not doing it becasue I am a decietful, two faced, conniving little whore of a songbird. She can sing... Holy hell can she sing. Slut. God, she pisses me off.
Maki turned and started to shuffle through her dresser.
Woah. You know she really makes me angry. When I think about her I become and angry person and think horrible things. I'm lowering myself to her level. And when she realizes that she is just going to beat me with all her slutty experience. Ahhhh, maybe this wasn't a good idea
She heard the knob turn.
Be cool. Be cool.
The door opened.

Maki looked at Kousuke nonchalantly over her shoulder.
"Ah."
She went back to shuffling through the top drawer.
Kousuke stood fixated. It seemed like his brain and body were trying deperately to figure out what to do in this situation.
It wasn't going so well for him.
"Uh, hey, you don't have clothes on."
"Yeah, no kidding." Maki turned around, a t-shirt in her hand. "I told you to come over in five minutes and it's been like four. Tops." She threw the t-shirt. Maki put her hands on her hips, her back still facing him.
Round Two
Maki bent down to look in the bottom drawer. She heard a loud thud.
Knock out?
She stood back up after thrity seconds or so of rumagaing. Maki turned, put her feet out a little ahead of her and crossed them. She leaned back , her forearms on the top of the dresser, and threw her shoulders back.
K.O.
"What?"
Kousuke had his one hand on his waist, his other was furiously running through his hair. He stopped, brought his one arm across his stomach, rested his left elbow on it and placed his hand infront of his face. You would have swore he was trying to solve a complex math problem. But this was more than a numbers game.
Honestly if it is really this easy I can't blame her for doing it all the time.

Kousuke stood there.
"Ah."
She whent back to whatever she was doing.
Bloody hell.
"Uh, hey, you don't have clothes on."
"Yeah, no kidding." She turned and shot him a look that mockingly screamed, "Really? How observent, I didn't quite catch that one." Kousuke missed this of course, because he wasn't looking up that high.
"I told you to come over in five minutes and it's been like four. Tops."
Stripes?
 Maki turned and bent over.
Kousuke threw his arms up in the air and started to shake around in disbelif. He jumped up in the air and landed with a thud.
She turned and leaned up against the dresser.
thankyouthankyouthankyou
Kousuke didn't know who he was thanking, but whoever was responsible for this deserved a medal, plaque,  and or day in their honnor. Hell, all of them.
especally whoever is responsible for creating the underwear....and bra..thank you for winning the genetic lottery, Maki, thank you sooo damn much.

Maki continued staring back at him.
"You've seen it all before."
"Yeah but when we were like kids and stuff."
"Are your eyes like, glassy?"
"Damned if I know, but I wouldn't be suprised."
"You know I'm up here right?"
"Yeah, vaguely aware of it." He brought his eyes up to her's. "I'm kidding, I'm kidding. Beilive me, I know whats up there. Your face is gorgeous. It's just, you've got certain other assests-" He emphasised assets. "and when all is said and done no matter what I am a guy and you are wearing your bra and panties."
"This is true."
"Hey, you know what I never got?"
"Quantum phsyics?"
"Yeah, okay that and like the whole bikini bra underwear thing."
"What?"
"Like right now, you're in your bra and panties and it is unbelivebly hot and all that fun stuff right? If someone sees your underwear or something, like it is a big deal, you know?"
"Yeah."
"But people walk around in bikini's all the time. And it isn't a big deal. Bikini's cover the excact same or even less, but it is more acceptable to walk around in a bikini than it is your underwear."
"huh."
"It's werid, right?"
"You know it really is. I thought about that once before though. Cause if you do a photoshoot in a bikini it makes it sell but you can't do one in your underwear without being AV."
"Yeah, yeah."
"So from a guys perspective the underwear bra combo is hotter than the bikini, right?"
"Yeah."
"That's werid. But at the same time it kinda makes sense, you know?"
"Yeah. Like I think it is only for girls though, cause look."
Kousuke unbottoned his jeans and slid them off.
"I kinda see what your saying."
"It is essentailly like a swimsuit type deal, the boxers."
"Yeah but is covers less."
"Yeah, that's true."
"Lose the shirt."
Kousuke obligied.
"Now see that makes it hotter. But still it is just kinda like-"
"Maybe it is just the boxers?"
"Yeah. I think for the most part guys have the potential to be a lot hotter in like no shirt and like sweatpants or something than just boxers. Unless they are cool boxers."
"Yeah. Plus it's more comfortable."
"It is, isn't it? Especially those grey ones you have."
"Definate comfrotable. Speaking of the grey one's have you like, you know, seen them anywhere?"
"Okay, okay so the grey ones I have are comfortable."
"Knew it."
"Can't blame me."
"I know."
Maki realized that Kouske's expression had changed from the usual to something else. She did realize that this was becuase Kousuke was beating himself up for being in this situation but not being able to do something other than talk about bikinis, underwear, bras, and boxers.. His one shot and he couldn't do it.
"What's that look for?"
"What look?"
"The look you have on your face right now. Did you forget to mail that form?"
The look went away and everything went back to normal again.
"You know, I honestly have no idea! I think I mailed it but I'm not sure."

Just because Kousuke couldn't take it, didn't mean Maki wouldn't.

I love how they're trying not be all nonchalant like it's no big deal even though they're both in thier skivvies and crazy about each other.

Yo erink, in the next chapter are we gonna get a joke about Kosuke being "at attention"? XD

In the end I couldn't let it go to the second page.

"Soda."
Kousuke's hand came into Maki's veiw.
"Thanks."
She handed the can back to him after she had taken a sip.
Kousuke was slouching in his seat on the couch. The comfortable cusions conforming slightly to the weight of his body.Maki was sitting with her back against the side of his body, her legs over the arm of the couch.
"I don't get why he just didn't shoot him already." Maki stated aloud.
"Yeah. But it's a movie. if he shot him now, it-"
"Yeah, I know. But still. It would just make sense to shoot him now."
"Logic has no place in action movies."
"Uhn. That's true."
The pair had remained half clothed. Something that was a bit of a catch 22, at least for one of the parties involved. A few minutes passed.
"This is comfy. We should do it more often."
"Yeah."
Are you on crack!? This is not comfy. This is hard. This is really hard. Do you know how hard it is not to get hard with you leaning- ah no. No. What'da think you are doing? Don't shift like that! If you shift like that your legs! They are-
"Nice."
"Very."
"Dinner later?"
"Yeah."
"Yeah."
_______________

Three weeks had passed. In the time that followed, Kousuke and Miki grew, much to Maki's concern, even closer, while Maki continued her erratic pattern of behaivour around him.

Rain made continuous drumming noises on the roof. In an odd sense it was quite tranquil. Kousuke sat cross-legged on one of the kitchen chairs pouring over his text book. Or at least, putting on a good show of looking engrossed. It wasn't difficult, the assignment would just take a little bit more time than usual to complete. A knock on the door brought him out of the facinating world of molecular biology and back into real time.
"Coming."
He unfloded his long legs and made his way over to the door.
He didn't bother to look to see who it was, he had a feeling he knew.
His feeling however, was wrong. Standing at the door was a girl (okay so half of his feeling was right), dripping wet from the rain, who wore a worried expression.
"Matsuura..."
"We need to talk."

Its funny and clever that you didn't take the situtation in the obvious direction. Very clever, in fact. I loved this chapter just because it was so unexpected. And what could Aya want???? Ohhhh. I can't wait.

Kousuke and Matsuura knew each other. They weren't exchanging text messages or anything, but they would greet each other as friends if they bumped into one another. Kousuke was around with Maki alot so most of the girls had grown accostomed to seeing him every now and then and took the opportunity to exchange small talk. Matsuura was no exception. This however...

"We need to talk."
It was taking Kousuke sometime to catch up with this. It was pretty low on the list of things he expected and he was acting accordingly.
"Ah, about...what?"
"Miki."
It was a dumb question, but all that managed to make it out of his mouth.
Kousuke realized she was still in the hallway. He moved out of the way allowing her inside and closed the door behind her. Then, he walked over to the kitchen and grabed a towel for her to dry off a bit with.
"Uh." Was all he could managed. He never thought there was anything particularly attractive about her, but seeing her up close was somehthing else entirely.
"Where are you going with this?"
"With?"
She wasn't hiding her frustration very well. She gave a looked that screamed ' Please try and keep up"
"With Miki. What are you doing?"
"I, I'm still not. We're just-"
"She talks about you, you know. Alot." Matsuura paused and looked up at him before continuing. "Miki never talked before, about guys that is. But you, she doesn't give it a break. This is werid for her. Really werid."
Kousuke tilted his head to the side and leaned back on the wall.
"Listen, I'm worried about her. She obviously cares about you. And Miki doesn't really do relationships all that well. I mean just her talking about you to me is huge. So I wanna know what you are going to do. If you're just messing around, you should just end it right now before-"
"I'm not."
"Good."
There was a pause.
"She doesn't deserve to be hurt. If you hurt her-"
"I'm not going to."
"Good."
The awkward pause showed up again.
"She's not just some girl you know. She's something special."
"I know she is."
"Don't hurt her, okay?"
Matsuura lost the look of anger and her tone became softer.
"Please."
all Kousuke could do was nod, slowly.

"Well?"
"I have this nawing in the pit of my stomach."
Miki smiled deviously.
"Don't worry, it'll go away. Or you'll get used to it after awhile."
"Miki," Aya turned to lok at her. "normally I stay out of all your evil plotting, I even tend to ingore that it happens, because I like you. I really like you, you know that? But this time, I really. I mean-"
"It's no big deal. I forced you into it so you really shouldn't feel that bad. In the long run-"
"Miki, I'm serious. I've got a bad feeling about this."
"You get a bad feeling about everything becuase you're just so pure and innocent. It's nothing. I've got it under control."
"I really don't think you do."
"Hmph. Anyway, how'd it go?"
"He looked how I feel."
Miki smiled again.
"What'd you say to him?"
"That I wanted to know where the relationship was going, and how you talked about him and all that stuff. I really don't want to have to relive it, it certainly wasn't one of my finer moments-"
"What did he say?"
"That he's not screwing around with you and he won't hurt you. Miki I-"
"Good. Good. Did he say anything thing about Maki?"
"Huh? Maki? No."
"Ahhhh" Miki let out a sigh. "Aya, you're such a good friend." Miki leaned over and threw her arms around Aya.
"I think I'm going to be sick."

Miki rested her head on Kousuke's chest, exhausted. He gently ran his left hand through her hair as he looked at the ceiling. The two were just mumbling back and forth about nothing in particular.
"Soccer tomorrow?" She asked, slowly rolling her shoulders before resting back on his chest.
"Yeah. What are you doing?" Kousuke asked, his eyelids were moving slower and slower before finally closing completely at the end of the sentence.
"Aya's probably coming over. Jealous that I'm spending so much time with the boyfriend."
Kousuke's eyes shot back open and he could feel Miki's body tense.
She made a barely audible noise as Kousuke shifted away from her. He brought up his right arm and rested his wieght on it as he turned his upper body slightly to the left, looking Miki straight in the eye. He stayed there and they looked at one another for a few seconds.
He turned completely to the left and brought Miki's body in as close as he could in an embrace.
He kissed her neck and upper jaw, stopping after he kissed part of her earlobe.
"Boyfriend?" He whispered. She could feel his breath on the side of her face.
Miki could barely stop a soft moan as she managed an "Uhh"
"Hey, girlfriend," He nuzzled the side of her neck slowly. "how does that song go?"
As he felt her body relax, a broad smile came to his face. He kissed her neck again.
He would keep his promise. He wouldn't hurt her.

But she made no promises. She would hurt him.

The sound system in Maki's living room continued blasting as she readjusted herself. She leaned back more and put her legs up and over the arm of the couch. She was about to return her attention to the screen when she noticed something. Her slender fingers wrapped around the Kousuke's hand that was laying gently on her side. She pulled it over to the right, bringing his arm across her body before intertwining her fingers and turning to the side.
"Maki..."
"Huh?" She managed as she watched the vampire's head explode.
"You need to stop."
"I know, I know I need to stop renting bad movies. But honestly vampires and robots, it was such a good premise."
She heard him sigh loudly.
"Although that is very true, it's not what I mean."
"Ohh! Did you see that? His neck is it three pieces!"
"Ma-kkkkiiiii"
It was something he had done since childhood. Whenever she was being difficult he would stop dead, scrunch up his face, and call out her name, breaking it in two and draging out the 'ki'.
"Well it was either this or some sappy drama. And we all know that we just don't do sappy dramas. We spend the entire move making fun of the charecters and talking about how ridiculous the whole plot is. At least there are explosions in this."
"I can't."
She rolled her eyes back trying to look at him without having to get up.
"Just stop this." He pulled up his hand, taking hers with him, and brought it into her view.
"I can't anymore." He said. "I'm Miki's..." He pulled his arm away from her and placed the other on her shoulder, forcing her to turn and face him. "Miki, I'm her boyfriend."
"Didn't she have a song-"
"Yeah."
The seriousness of the situation vanished during that exchange, but returned shortly after.
He smiled sadly.
"I just, it isn't really fair to her to..."
Maki licked her lips.
"No, yeah, I... Yeah."
"It's just lately you have been kinda-"
"Whorish?"
"I was going to opt for confusing, but yeah that one fits."
After a few seconds of silence, they started giggling.

It was true. Miki obviously had the upper hand when it came to seduction.
Slut...
It left Maki at a lost. She could pull it off easily enough, the looks, the smiles, the lack of clothing.
It was just that once.
But her follow up was lacking. After she got him into the palm of her hand, she had no idea what to do next. This made for rather sporadic bursts of flirting, kisses, and attempts at subtle contact.

"Koukuu"
Another childhood habit. She didn't remember when she started calling him that, but the name stuck. In an odd way it felt like it was validation of the relationship she had with him. A special thing between them. It was just a nickname, but it felt as though it was some great big secret that connected the two of them. Throughout their entire life, no one else had ever called him that. Just her. For a split second she imagined Miki saying it and cringed.

Maki was looking down at her(his) grey sweatpants. She fiddled with slightly frayed edge of the fabric.
"You're too good for her."
He breathed deeply. Moving himself closer to her, before looking down at his own legs.
"I think that's just a matter of perspective."
"Well, if I'm the one that knows you best, shouldn't mine be the perspective you take?"
She looked up at him.
"Maki-"
"No. Just please, listen to me on this. She's, she..." Maki looked back down at the couch feeling a few tears forming in her eyes. "I don't want you to get hurt." She finnished lamely.
Suddenly she felt his arms wrapped around her. He pulled her in close and kissed the top of her head.
"Things don't always end badly." He said, in an attempt to ease her worries.
No, sometimes they just end in betrayal

It was the little things he did for her that made this worthwhile. That and the sex. And the fact that she not only got to have fun, she got to be victorious over Maki. Okay, so it was a combination of things that made Miki enjoy this emensly.

Morning's tour had made it difficult to meet recently, but he called faithfully. Miki was just about to get in the shower when there was a knock on the hotel door. She wrapped a towel around herself and made her way out of the bathroom, through the kitchen and over to the door.
"Comin', comin'. Ai if that's you, no for the last time I have not seen your shoes."
Miki opened the door.
And dropped her jaw.
Which was good, it added to the realism of her performance.
Standing outside was Kousuke, he was holding a bouquet of sunflowers and smiling.
"Good work tonight."
"Are you serious?"
"Well, you were kinda half assing the dance moves but-"
She smiled.
"You said you were really busy at school and stuff."
"I lied."
Miki smiled.
Haven't we all...
"You came all the way down here?"
"Yeah. It's been awhile. I wanted to see you."
He moved inside and she closed the door.
"Is that all you wanted to do?"
Kousuke set the flowers on the table next to the phone.
"Okay... So I wanted to kiss you."  At the end of his sentence, he leaned down and did just that.
"I really missed you." Miki said, putting her hand on his neck and kissing him again.
"I did too."
"I can't belive you came all the way down here. That's like three hours."
"Yeah."
"Why didn't you come see me before the concert? Where did you-"
"Right in the pit."
Miki's mind played a little snippet of what the average floor level of the concert looks like.
"You're brave."
"I like to think so."
He smiled.
"It was better this way.Although showing up backstage before the concert, in front of all the girls, I suppose I definately would have won brownie points."
"Nah, I like to have you all to myself. Wouldn't want them getting even more jealous."
Miki smiled looking him up and down.
"So you wanted to see me and kiss me, which you did."
"Right."
"Any chance you wanted to get in the shower with me too?"
"You don't even have to ask."

Weeks had passed since Kousuke stopped by the hotel that night. Miki was back in her apartment. She was on the floor, leaning up against one of the walls in the hallway. She rested her arms on her knees, staring off into space.

"This is bigger than me now. I'm not in control of this anymore." She was taking shallow breahtes, and  everynow and then her body would tremble slightly, just for a moment."Little by little I was losing my grasp on it. But I didn't notice. What should I do?" She turned. "Help me."
"Tan" The girl said affectionately. " You've seen enough movies to know that this isn't going to turn out good. You're hurting him no matter what and you can't stop it."
"Aya, what should I do? Do I just tell him?"
"What you should have done was never started this in the first place."
"When it started, I didn't care. I didn't feel this. But then little by little, I stopped having to put on a smile. It was just there. And yeah I kept sleeping with him, but after awhile even that was different. I like being close to him. The way he holds me and talks to me. At first it didn't matter, but now... Now if I lose that..."
Aya sighed. She had never seen Miki like this. To be honest she was at a loss.
"Maybe I just shouldn't tell him. What he doesn't know can't hurt him, right?"
"Yeah, but what Maki knows sure will."
"If I talk to her..."
"You have a better chance of getting your solo career back."
"I'm scared. I know I did it to myself. I know I'll deserve it when he leaves me. Seeing him in pain... It's going to hurt me. I actually care about him. So seeing him like that, even just thinking about it hurts. And I know that when it happens, that pain, all I will be able to think about is how much I deserve it. What is this? This wasn't supposed to be like this."
"Miki, I have to say it."
"I know you do."
"I told you so."

Kousuke clicked his tounge.
"Mann, do you do anything else?" He whispered to himself as he turned to close the door.
"For your information, I'm not." The lump on the bed spoke. "I'm just thinking."
"Scary."
"Ha.Ha.Ha."
Kousuke stepped into the room and moved over to the bed.
Goto rolled over to look at him.
"What are you doning here?"
"Your mom called. She said you were acting funny and wanted to know if you were okay."
Maki rolled her eyes.
"Why couldn't she just ask?"
"Because she knows she wouldn't have gotten anywhere. If you were really okay you would have gotten huffy and insisted that you were okay, wondering why she thought something was wrong in the first place. And"
He pushed her legs aside so he could lay down next to her. " if you really weren't okay, which you're not, you would have lied and said that you were."
"I'm okay."
"Lies."
Maki clicked her tounge.
"It is our special friendship powers." Kousuke said interlocking his fingers with hers. " I can not only tell when you are not okay, I can tell when you are lying. And guess what? You're both right now."
Maki sat up, and Kousuke did the same.
She stared at him for a few seconds, apathetically.
"It's a big problem."
"They always are."
"Koukuu..." She tilted her hed to the side, looking down at the sheets.
"hmm?"
"I just."
The words stopped in her throat, choking her.
"I just want to know for sure."
She bit her lower lip.
"In my heart, I think I know the answer. But somedays I just wake up and it is different. I've been thinking about it. That's all I've been thinking about."
Maki started trembling slightly.
"I just want to know for sure."
She continued looking off to the side for a moment before bringing her eyes up to his.
Kousuke leaned forward, putting his left hand on the back of her head.
He kissed her, and Maki let him.
She let her body fall back onto the bed as he brought his right hand to her hip.
It only lasted ten seconds. At most. His body up against hers. Unconsciously she had moved her hand onto his chest.
He pulled away from her.
"Do you know for sure?"
Maki tilted her head back.
"Yeah."

Kousuke opened the door to his apartment.
"Hey" Miki yelled in her 'cute' voice.
She smiled playfully and got off the couch, heading towards him.
Miki wrapped her arms around him and stood on tip toe for a kiss.
Kousuke smiled uncomfortably and leaned his head back.
"Just wait a minute, okay? We need to talk."
Miki's expression changed. She losened her grip on him slightly, pulling away a little so she could see his face.
"Come 'ere." Kousuke said, taking her hand in his and moving over to the couch.
Miki sat down.
"Hey..." She licked her lips. "What is it? You're making me nervous."
Kousuke sat down next to her.
"Miki..."
He kept looking at her.
I can't...
"I kissed Maki."
He looked off to the side, and then back to her.
"I can't explain it. I knew what I was doing. I was the one who kissed her, not the other way around. I chose to do it. I knew it would hurt you, but I thought... I thought that even though I was hurting you, I would be saving you from the hurt that would come if things continued this way. I just wanted to know... To be sure."
Kousuke moved forward on the couch until he was off of it, on his knees infront of Miki.
"Miki..." He reached out his hand to put it on her knee, but pulled it back. "I was your boyfriend. I was supposed to love you like no one else could. You don't have to belive me. I have no right to ask you to. So all I can do is just say that I'm sorry that I hurt you. It's twisted, but I did it with good intentions. I did it to try and help us."
Tears ran down Miki's face. She remained motionless.
Kousuke put his hand out and looked at her, silently asking for permission.
She agreed by looking at him and moving her head slightly.
He placed his hand on the side of her face, wiping away her tears with his thumb.
She closed her eyes, his touch making her willing to forgive anything and everything he did.
Suddenly Miki snapped out of it. She brought her hands up to her face and wipped away her own tears.
He pulled his hand back. Still kneeling infront of her.
"When did this happen?"
"Like five minutes ago."
"Five minutes ago?"
"Yeah."
"And the first thing you did was to come and tell me?" Miki asked, slightly shocked.
"Yeah."
"you wouldn't let me kiss you..." Miki said, seemingly to herself.
"It would be wrong. If I kissed you after doing that. Beacuase after I told you, I mean you would have just kissed me and it probably would have made it worse. Realizing that you were all over me a second ago and I had done that to you. I wanted to tell you everything before you did anything. Even you touching me made me feel...dirty."
"You told me." She repeated.
"If I lied about it, it would just hurt you more in the end, wouldn't it? I don't want to hurt you more than I already did."
"You said, was. You made it past tense. 'I was your boyfriend."
Kousuke couldn't hide his "why do you keep saying dumb things" expression.
"I was your boyfriend. Cheating is unforgivable. It's the lowest. I know that. I get that. You couldn't forgive something like that."
"But I do."
"What?"
"I forgive you."
"What?"
Miki shook her head side to side.
"It's okay. Well, it's not okay, but... I still want you. I still want you in the worst way. And I still want you to be my boyfriend."
Kousuke looked to the side. He leaned back, resting his thighs on his heels. In a few seconds he sat completely on the floor, staring off into space.
...How? How could she ever forgive me?
"How?" He asked, turning to look at her.
"Hey, Kousuke."
He furrowed his brow.
"Kiss me. Hold me like you always do."
Kousuke was still confused, but he certainly wasn't going to deny her. He would give her anything and everything she wanted.
He kept kissing her. And when he was finally done, he pulled her in close, stroking her hair.
Miki's eyes were closed, her lips parted slightly.
Like an angel. She's so beautiful. I don't deserve her.
Miki opened her eyes and looked at him. She leaned in, kissing him one last time.
"Now it is my turn to tell you something."

"What is it?"
"I just wanted you to kiss me. To make me feel like I was something. One last time."
"Miki-"
"When we first started messing around... Well, you were good looking and I never had to fake it, so I could care less about everything else. I mean every single time you went above and beyond, making it all about me. Sure I returned the favor, but you were something else."
Miki shook her head.
"The importnat thing was that I felt amazing. So nothing else mattered. Then I thought it would be really fun to mess with you. I mean, if I could get you to do those things to me in bed, what else could I get you to do? So I slipped into playing the helpless damaged litle girl. That night I called you and wanted to 'talk'. And you said that I didn't have to smile if I wasn't happy. You told me you were glad that I was there and the rest of the night you held me in your arms. That was when it started. Well I was thinking about it a little before that, but that was really the first situation. Then the movie. After that , soccer."
Her voice noticeably changed.
"But that's where it got messed up. That day, when you kissed me...I'd never been kissed like that. It was completely different from all the other times and all the other guys before you. I felt something...Something that..."
She looked deeply into his almost grey eyes.
" I just thought I was losing it or something. So I pushed it to the back of my mind. Then I called you my boyfriend. It just kind of slipped out. But I rationalized that it was a good move for me to keep it going. Still, I couldn't help but wonder where that even came from. Then during the tour. When you showed up, I was really shocked. You had sunflowers, my favorite. After that night, the things you would say to me... I just kept remembering how ever since that day out on the field, you treated me different. Things felt different. Soon I realized that I wasn't playing anymore. The things that were coming out were the real me. Bit by bit I was losing my control over the situation until..."
"Until?" Kousuke hoarsely asked.
"Until I realized that I had fallen for you. Hard. I knew that if I told you I would hurt you. I thought if I didn't things would be okay. But I knew that it would get harder and harder for me as I got closer to you.  To know that I was lying to you...For the past two days all I have been able to think about was telling you. And when you came in here, when you came in here with that look on your face, telling me that you kissed Maki. You looked as though you were telling me that you had been sleeping with her this entire time. Just something completely and totally awful. I saw how much you cared, and how much you... Of course I'm not like you. I'm too selfish. I wanted you to kiss me and hold me like you always did. I wanted to have my memory of what it felt like to have someone. You tried to protect me from that feeling. But I couldn't. I wanted you one last time."
It was as though the flood gates to Miki's mind had been open. Soon everything was coming out.
"I have to be pretty fucked up to do this to you, huh? That's what you are thinking isn't it? The truth is, when I was younger, I would do anything for affection. I would throw myself all over guys, just hoping one of them would give me a second glance, or say something nice to me. Boys at that age, they see it and use it don't they? I had like three of four boyfriends at a time, but none of them cared about me. I couldn't see it though. They said that they loved me and they kissed me and stuff. I belived every word and would do anything they wanted.  But then I grew up. I got tired of being taken advantage of. So when I got here, I just decided to take instead of being taken. I wanted to be the one in control. I wanted to  be able to have all the power."
Miki had a vacant look in her eyes.
"I thought that was what I wanted. Really. I  really wanted to have someone who said those things and ment them. But I didn't know how to get it. I had spent all those years acting that way. If boys only wanted me for my body and sex, then I figured I could just use it to get what I wanted. I was bored and wanted to have some fun. That's why I started messing around with you. I had no idea. I had no idea that you would make me feel this way. That I could even feel this way. If I only knew in the begning, I would have done so many things differently."
She paused.
"You don't know how afraid I am to lose you. I know I am going to, and it scares me so much. But I wanted to make things right. I wanted to be able to be honest with you. I knew that it was going to hurt you, but I just wanted to do it now before it could become something bigger and hurt you worse. I wanted to tell you becuase I..."
Complete silence.
"I love you."

Maki  started yelling "Kousuke, we need to talk." before the door was even open. Once inside, she saw Kousuke sitting on the couch, his elbows resting on his knees and his face burried in his hands. Next to him was Miki with a tear streaked face, who was hugging her knees. Maki kept her eyes on Miki as she moved over towards Kousuke. She put her arm on his shoulder, shaking him.
"Come on, we need to talk. Come on. Now, we need to talk right now."
She continued shaking him.
"Kousuke! Come on."
"I already told him." Miki said, barely audible.
Maki stopped.
"Don't believe a single word she said." Maki crouched down moving herself closer to him. She put her hand on his neck." I did it to save you Kousuke. I did it because I'm the one that actually cares about you! Not her!"
"Did what?" He asked, moving his hands away from his face.
Maki looked up at Miki.
"I didn't tell him about that."
Suddenly, Maki found it hard to breathe.

Thanks guys. For the record, JFC's post made writing this entire thing worthwhile. Weekend is almost here, that means a strong possibility of updates.

Just a strong possibility??? PLEASE! I beg of you. You have to update! The way you write makes this so suspenseful that I don't think I can wait much longer. I need to know!

Strong possiblity losely translates to "I will update." I just add the possibility part on the off chance I don't.

The end? Well, yeah I guess this is the begining of the end. But it is far from being over.

Sorry no updates. The feeling isn't there, and if I try and force it I am left with something I dislike(a few of the earlier updates are like this. They stick out pretty bad.) Plus tonight I got hit with an idea for a new peice. One Shot will be updated, I just can't give a concrete time. I just need to be feeling it.
