Title: Deviant Artists
Post by: jabronisaur on September 09, 2008, 05:08:23 AM
As a novice artists I always felt it was a good idea to look at the art of others and maybe even gleen some techniques from the  more accomplished. To that end, I often peruse through the deviant art site and find artist that inspire me. Some of these artists I would like to share with you and hope you find them as intriguing as I do. And feel free to add your own favorites artists (deviant or otherwise).

This artist has nice sense of anatomy, excelent skin tones and mood colors, and hint of dark gothic that I like a lot.

This artists has something of a sketchy style of painting, but it works in adding drama and movement to the art. I also enjoy the subject matter that ranges from Warhammer to Robotech.

http://reiq.deviantart.com/ (http://reiq.deviantart.com/)
Now Reiq does a lot of hentai stuff as well. But there are a few pieces that are mainstream. But they're all great. Vibrant colors and trademark gloss add much to the works.

http://www.ghostcircles.com/matt/category/mnd/ (http://www.ghostcircles.com/matt/category/mnd/)
I love this artist's fun style. Despite it being very cartoony, there's still a lot of detail put into these pieces. Don't let pretty pallete or small statures fool you.

I like looking at a lot of other artists for inspiration too. I check out a lot of blogs and have sketchbooks that I like to look at. I like to just chill and look at them and usually end up being so motivated to draw myself. They're also nice to look at for things I would like to try. I don't think I really draw like any of the artists in particular. I try to stay away for a bit if I get to that point.

I like looking at almost anything that's done well, but I especially love looking at cartoon girlies. I'm not alone on that and there are tons of artists who draw excellent women. Other than girls, I like stuff that's funny. I love stuff that's well draw but still has a fun feel to it.

First up is Dean Yeagle.(http://www.cagedbeagle.com) He's done animation work and some cartoons for Playboy but he's most known for his character Mandy. Dean's cartoons with Mandy are always fun and sexy without being crass.

Molly Crabapple was one of the first artists that I started to follow. I found her site through an artist's site and instantly fell in love. Everything from the colors to the crazy costumes and even the little stuff going on in the background. I've never had an interest in Burlesque or Victorian type stuff, but I love how Molly does it. When I found her site I followed links to lots of other artists and that was when I got bit by the drawing bug and got me back into it again. Her work with inks is one the reasons I wanted to try it myself. She also started "Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School", a life drawing session where models wear crazy outfits to make for some fun life drawing. I hope to attend one someday.

Her artiste's statment
I learned to draw in a Parisian bookstore. My pen and ink technique comes from hours spent copying Alice in Wonderland and A Tart’s Progess. I soon fell in love with the feel of making ink lines- the crackle of the paper, the scratch of the pen nib, the sensual pleasure in drawing a curve.

Back in New York I came across the subject most dear to my heart - artifice. As a model, I work in an industry where girls turn their bodies into art objects. It’s a beauty doubly poignant because it’s so short-lived. Most girls won’t last past thirty. My time as a burlesque dancer showed me plain women emerging from the club’s dressing room as goddesses. Through paint, feathers and pasties, they made themselves gorgeous. It’s beauty as a garment, a shell, a mask.

In the two time periods I draw from most in my work- Victorian England and Rococo France- people tried to make their entire public lives as artificial as a burlesque dancer’s face. My characters, bewigged aristocrats and corseted ladies, are creatures of the polished surface. They’re molded by ornament- their corsets and cage skirts- and sometimes trapped inside.

But as with any mask, there’s a face underneath. And the face in my work is smirking. For any mask, or mask like society, has a weakness. If you want to crack it, you only have to laugh. Thus, my characters have arched brows and sarcastic smiles. They want to let you in on a secret. It’s all terribly silly, isn’t it?

I just found dA accounts of a bunch of artists I like and know of from another forum. I never planned to make an account, but I might now since there is a lot of stuff I don't see on their sites or blogs and can't see on dA unless I have an account.

Here's Matt Humphreys (http://americanninjax.deviantart.com/). This is the guy I met at AX.

Discovered this page through StumbleUpon and thought it was so awesome that I had to share

 (http://img256.imagevenue.com/loc205/th_79359_YA_6667_122_205lo.jpg) (http://img256.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=79359_YA_6667_122_205lo.jpg)
Yamamoto Artworks (http://gallery.digik.net/gallery/380)

Dunno if this professional artwork, maybe if it looks similar to someone's work then someone can enlighten me on this? Anyways, the gallery's full of medievil-esque fantasy characters, mainly cute women packing weapons or it's just cute women inappropriately dressed. XD All done tastefully, mind you, there's nothing too explicit on display. It's not just staring at anime hotties though, the attention to detail on the clothing or the creatures is amazing IMO and it inspires me to go out and take up artistry myself. However crappy it is! XD

^LOL!! I just became of fan of his work a few days ago, I even got one of his out-of-print art books. That's Shunya Yamashita (http://shunyama.web.fc2.com/). I saw these two statues he designed and started checking out more:

I don't know which name he goes by now, most of what I've seen is under Shunya Yamashita. He's done some NPC designs for FFX and some designs for one of the Valkyrie Profile games. Quite a few of his designs have been turned into statues and model kits. He does some really great girls. His other stuff I don't really care for though. Not even because of the subject matter, but I don't think they're that great. I like how his girls have a nice mix of cute and sexy.

Some fan art

I made an account last week, mainly so I could see images from some of my favorite artists. I'm uploading stuff right now, so there won't be much. I'm putting up the portraits I did from class this summer.

I was a member of deviantart since a long time, and uploaded pictures pf photo shootings mostly. But I felt a little bit lost, because there are many perverts there who started to follow my profile... I deleted all my pictures then.
Unfortunately they aren't really deleted, because if I try to open the the direct link- it still works! and deviantart is unable to delete it, although I asked the 3-4 times!!!! Their helpdesk is really useless.
