Title: The Web Browser Poll
Post by: doinkies on November 18, 2007, 05:35:58 AM
Because I'm a curious doink, I wondered what web browsers JPH!P members commonly use.

And how about people that use more then one...

(browser wars! :) )

Currently 95% IE7, 5% Firefox.
And FF is not really 'more secure' then IE7, there where a few goofs in updates lately...
And they still need to fix the memory leak in FF.

BTW, zero plugins used/needed (although I might need a popup blocker for FF someday. some sites are starting to annoy me that start when I view pictures from ImageShack)

I use Opera myself and Firefox on occasion, to test web code and whatever.

Maybe I've grown accustomed to Opera or something, I just don't see myself moving to FF. Maybe if I find some plugin I just can't live without...

Firefox with a handful of vital extensions.  I also have Opera installed because even now I'll occasionally (rarely) come across a page that simply will not work in FF but will in Opera, go figure.  I haven't opened IE in ages.

I've been using Firefox ever since I discovered it. I only open IE when I need to access the intranet site at work and when I need to download something from Megaupload.  XD

Internet Explorer ebcause I can't stand Firefox...I just can't be arsed with all the shortcuts and shit, I'd rather just ahev the buttons in front of me. I do use it whenever I'm using megaupload though as IE decided one day that it would block it...hmm.

Opera. And Opera mini in my cellphone.

Occasionally Firefox when I'm in need of some extensions.

I just like Opera better... I probably could change Firefox to my liking by trying and installing tens of extensions. But I don't feel like doing it :)

Same here. In my case, sometimes Forefox gets to be faster than Opera, but that's only when I abuse my computer. Most of the time, Opera works better for me.

If not for the extensions and the eventual incompatibility, I wouldn't use Firefox at all.  8)

Firefox.

It's just the most stable and reliable for me. I've tried Avant, but it was too IE-based and I don't like IE. Opera is pretty good, I have it, but it's just a back-up browser.

The only extension I have with FF is Ad-Block Plus, I don't see the need for a whole bunch of them.

I've used Opera before (back when it was ad supported). It's pretty good but Firefox fits my needs better at the moment (and I use the method listed in the Geek Guides subforum to deal with the memory problems).

And yeah, I do have many extensions, don't I

Well, at least I don't have as many as this guy does:

Now there's a lot of extensions...

Converted to FF long time ago.. The add-ons are useful and add more functionality. 2nd place is Opera, which I think it\'s faster than Firefox and friendlier to memory .. Use Opera on my old specs xp box at home which has 128MB ram lol..

I use firefox, had some plugins but a lot of times when I get the firefox updates they no longer are compatible with the newer version so I just get lazy trying to check for a newer version. I had the black japan theme for firefox but that too went kaput when the FF 2.0 update came. I use IE scarcely only for certain situations where I can't do something in firefox.

And when I'm on my linux machine - I use Konqueror. Pretty much browsers I think.
Though my vote went to firefox  :P

Yeah I've been trying out Chrome today and seems really simple and fast.
Also this quick reply box has a little tab on it that lets me resize it to however large I want :o and that seems to be a standard feature built in to Chrome :o

Although I can't use my middle mouse button to scroll :(

I use opera which suits me well since on average-ish i have about..15 tabs open at once.
Opera seems to cope with that number best and goes between them easily and such.

and at ebc comment on the scroll...wtf? That would really annoy me.  At school most computers dont have one and it gets so annoying scrolling down pages actually using the scroll bar.
They need to fix that.
Title: Re: The Web Browser Poll

I use Flock & love it!
It's like a baby sister (or something) of FF so it was the 'recently closed tabs' thing and, my fave thing, the downloads window... Originally I d/led coz of the Photobucket uploading features it has coz sometimes I need to upload hundreds of pictures at a time so I need Flock's drag and drop. Back then I was only using it for that and as back up when IE and FF weren't working... Now those two refuse to open most of my usual sites (incl. this one) so I've dumped them and only use Flock, which is sooo much faster than they ever were!
I haven't used all the features on here yet (even if I have had it for years XD) but a couple of the media features (eg. friends activity for Facebook & Youtube on homepage) are really interesting.

Oh and coz it's so fast, I don't bother with all the toolbars like google that I had on IE, it's just as fast to open a newtab and go that way.... it already has the built in spell check thing, so I don't need to add it on or anything... and I think it's pretty

^ I use Flock too, and I love it. The only problem for me is that it takes forever to open/load the program...
Title: Re: The Web Browser Poll
Post by: StreakInTheSky on September 15, 2008, 05:40:55 AM
flock is really just firefox with a bunch of extra features to make it "easier" to use a bunch of social networking type stuff. Being what it is, I don't think it would be possible for it to outperform firefox, unless you add a bunch of add-ons. I really wouldn't be surprised if there were add-ons that did what the extras on flock do, with better performance, but the interface and options probably wouldn't be as well integrated or user friendly.

As for me, I can't ditch firefox just yet. I'll have to wait and see what features chrome will be offering later on.

Opera 99% of the time, and Firefox when Opera doesn't display a page correctly.  Mostly because Opera is faster and more secure than Firefox (http://mywebpages.comcast.net/SupportCD/FirefoxMyths.html).
im agree with you,
common problem with firefox is always not responding when opening page with full of picture,
but if im using opera its no problem

Under the help is a 'check for updates'
If you downloaded from the mozilla site you should have the latest already, but as I said they seem to have a spree of bad programming currently so keep an eye on it.

At the Pwn2Own competition that just finished up recently, people competed to break in and exploit various browsers across all operating systems. Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Mac's Safari all fell. Chrome didn't.

Browser security: Pwn2Own topples all but Chrome (http://features.csmonitor.com/innovation/2009/03/24/browser-security-pwn2own-topples-all-but-chrome/)
Questions for Pwn2Own hacker Charlie Miller (http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=2941)

Pwn2Own hacker Charlie Miller concerning Macs and Safari:
"It’s really simple. Safari on the Mac is easier to exploit.  The things that Windows do to make it harder (for an exploit to work), Macs don’t do.  Hacking into Macs is so much easier. You don’t have to jump through hoops and deal with all the anti-exploit mitigations you’d find in Windows.

It’s more about the operating system than the (target) program.  Firefox on Mac is pretty easy too.  The underlying OS doesn’t have anti-exploit stuff built into it."

Pwn2Own hacker Charlie Miller concerning Chrome:
"There are bugs in Chrome, but they’re very hard to exploit. I have a Chrome vulnerability right now but I don’t know how to exploit it. It’s really hard. They’ve got that sandbox model that’s hard to get out of. With Chrome, it’s a combination of things — you can’t execute on the heap, the OS protections in Windows and the Sandbox."

Cool. I'm using Chrome now on my netbook - just because it makes the most efficient use of screen real estate.

FireFox .... but it crash when its ram usage went around 1.5GB .... (note: FireFox is 32 Bit ... so it can't use more RAM..)

it also crash when I use it for a long time ...... wtf

my PC is 64Bit and has 12 GB .... *banghead*

so I use IE8 simultaneously ..........

I switched directly over from Netscape to Firefox probably close to 4 years ago and through a combination of no major problems and laziness, I've never really tried anything else since.

I have tried Minefield a couple times but I think thats just bleeding edge builds of Firefox.

Firefox. Default search bar uses Google so I don't have to go to the actual site. Oh and tabs. IE's tab system seems kinda clumsy to me. Next is Safari but only when I'm on macs.

You can download an add-on for firefox that blocks flash. Otherwise you can just disable plugins in the options but that disables other things (QT and java) and you can't use youtube. The Flash blockers I have seen allow you to selectively enable flash.

I use Opera but have to use IE for facebook apps as some of them don't work properly with Opera.

Recently I upgraded IE6 to IE7, then IE8.  Both IE7 & IE8 are totally useless so I downgraded back to IE6.
Both IE7 & IE8 have the annoying habit of forcing the window to the front when the page loads.  Facebook is so slow that I always have other stuff open in Opera, and facebook in IE.  I'll click a link in facebook then bring Opera up and continue doing stuff there, going back to facebook in a while when the page/app has loaded.  With IE7/8 this was impossible - I'd click the link in facebook then go to Opera and immediately IE would force itself to the front, then it'd freeze for several seconds because facebook uses too much flash or java or something and uses 100% cpu (the freezing isn't nearly as bad with IE6).  IE7/8 kept forcing itself to the front when I was trying to do other stuff in Opera, it was making a mockery out of multitasking so I downgraded back to IE6.

In short, if you have IE6 don't upgrade because IE7&8 is shit.

Thats weird. I've never heard of a website that "steals focus" on one browser but not on another browser. Isn't that kind of behavior easily programed into javascript or something and will end up working on virtually any recent browser?

Honestly, it seems that IE6 days are numbered. I've seen websites here and there, that are dropping support for IE 6. Granted these websites tend to be visited mainly by the tech savvy "cool kids" who are probably using the latest version of x browser. Even microsoft is pushing holdouts to upgrade.

Opera is my fave. but for browsing i prefer to use Firefox.
I use Opera for torrent and saving pages into MHT format, i like my saved pages gather in 1 files.
Opera is good enough actually, what disappointing is that it doesn't support with hotmail and some website  :(

another thing what i like about opera is when i download something, opera shows where the address file is,
so i can copy that address into my download accelerator.

You can do that on FF too. For some sites, I think. You just click the download link, go to the FF download progress window and check the properties of the file being downloaded, then it'll show you the address.

Google finally released a beta version of Chrome for mac after about 15 months . Complete disappointment first there was not apparent way for me to block flash, either through disabling plugins or a built-in flash blocker (Camino is the only browser that has a flash blocker out-of-the-box!!). Any browser that gives me no means to block flash is dead to me. Google chrome also stealth installs an auto-updater (the kind that does not tell you they are updating the app) process at launch, which a big no-no for control freaks mac users such as myself. That and the whole google watches you thing. Not that it really matters between google analytics (most websites I go to seem to use it) and their search service I find it pretty hard to stay away from their sights.

BTW anybody who talks about memory leaks or excessive memory usage clearly has not talked to a mac user about Safari.  :)

Chrome is my default one now because it hardly crashes, compared to my FF especially. And if something that's a part of Chrome crashes (like Flash), you don't have to shut down your entire browser.

FF is absolutely fabulous given the extensions available, but in terms of speed and robustness, I gotta give the  :thumbup to Chrome. It may be simple, but it's bloody quick and reliable. I can't say the same for FF now (even though by default I use FF 4 out of 5 times), especially with the shitload of extensions that I can't help but install  :banghead:

I use 2 browsers. Google Chrome for regular use of the web... like checking mails, jphip.com and other stuff. And I use Internet Explorer (Yes I use it) for when I'm gonna surf the web knowing I will encounter ''dangerous'' websites. My IE has this program called Forcefield wich is like a shield for my browser. So much safer ^^ Also I use IE for things that won't work on Chrome.

Used Firefox for some time, but it kept giving me troubles (freezing/crashing) and my sister told me that had been happening with her laptop as well (so it's not just my machine or a bug on it or something). Switched to Chrome and while it occasionally has issues (for a while it did NOT like shockwave) it's been working fine.

I'm using Opera, now for about 2 years, before was IE 6/7/8 ...

Why? Well  8)
    > Bookmarks and DL manager gets the job done
    > Tabbed browsing is very fast and has previews
    > Speed dial is awesome!! (and very functional)
    > Address bar seems to be magic :shocked (very VERY functional)
typing "g opera" will search for opera in google.com
typing "yt KARA" will search for KARA on youtube.com
typing "gtk 카라" will translate 카라 to Kara on google translator
    > Panels are very handy: Notes, DL's, History, Windows, Bookmarks, etc; all that in a very tiny space and one-click away
    > Plug-in loading on demand: flash objects don't load until you click on them, including videos and ads, separately!!
    > Mouse gestures!! (those are the sh**t!)

Opera also has RSS feeder, "search as you type" in almos every box where you can type on, can download torrents, a very good Memory Management
(normally I have 30 to 40 tabs opened, with 20+ of them loaded with pages with videos, images, sounds, etc... using 400~500 MB RAM), skins, anti-phising
and many other anti-malware stuff, customizable UI(you can move/hide tool bars), e-mail, IM and IRC client; and so many things that I can't remember lol

I know Chrome, Firefox and Safari are very good browsers, but Opera has almost any function you want!!

PS: I'm kinda like a fanboy of Opera, but we have to admit that Opera is a very good browser, full of features with low system requirements

I've noticed that when I open a site, any pictures on it come out kind of pixely or grainy. But when I go to the same time on Chrome/FF, it's fine.

I started using Safari today, because I grew weary of Opera's inability to completely function with all of Google's sites, among other things. Safari lacks a lot of functional I'd, and I may wind up using Chrome, if I can find some extensions to fix glaring flaws. :cokecat:

I'm glad I've held off on changing my vote for the time being.

I switched to Chrome last week, having grown tired of Firefox's memory usage problems, but was reminded quickly why I stopped using Chrome the first time around last year (Asian font rendering, live bookmarks, Rikaichan's name dictionary, Twitter add-ons). This time, however, I made the necessary modifications, both with add-ons and my own habits, to make for a more comfortable changeover and made up my mind to stick with Chrome.

But then here comes Firefox 4 all of a sudden with a new Chrome-like interface and the promise of better memory usage...and now I don't know which one to stick with! :panic: I'd like to get back to proper fonts and the name dictionary via the new Firefox, but I've already settled myself with ChromedBird and RSS Live Links (plus this forum tends to make my CPU activity go crazy whenever I want to post a reply in FF). I guess I'll be alternating based on my mood now? XD

now i'm changing from firefox to opera. my usual way of browsing - hold many open pages, but after hibernate firefox starts freezing system. meybe i'd like chrome, but it create separate process for every page, i cannote let it generate about 40 threads, it shuts the system down. so i chose opera for ordinary surfing.

I use Firefox FTW, most customized browser ever. But really, they should start keeping the memory usage as low as possible, and they should start doing something for add-on site, it is easier to find variety of extension on chrome than firefox. Still don't like the fast pace upgrade.

I still use Chrome, for the PORN MODE(ctrl + shift + n). Chrome is fast, a little faster from firefox with little lower memory usage(they separate the process per tab, which seems like lower memory usage than firefox), no hassle.

Yeah, my vote's been officially changed for a while now, as I've been sticking with Chrome for the past several months. I managed to adjust myself with certain quirks and the right extensions, and all that along with the pure speed is making it hard to go back to Firefox even with the revamp. Though the way fonts look in FF now are kinda interesting (plus Rikaichan is still better than Rikaikun).

Do you mean Silverlight? You could check this page, maybe: http://www.microsoft.com/getsilverlight/Get-Started/Install/Default.aspx (http://www.microsoft.com/getsilverlight/Get-Started/Install/Default.aspx) - Not much uses it though, so you might not miss it anyway.

Depends on your computer and how old it is/what it's able to do as well as what version of FF you're trying to run. Assuming that you're trying to run the latest/most updated version of FF, if you have a good, strong, fast, efficiently-running rig then it should not be "hanging" on you. However, as is often the case, if you're running an older, slower computer, it may just not be able to handle/keep up with the resources needed to run it properly.

They benchmarked for Windows 7 and Windows 8 only so if you're using a different OS altogether then maybe you'd just like reading this article for the hell of it?

Sure. Netscape Navigator was my browser of choice. I dodged IE till the very last moment, until jumping to NN's kinda-successor Firefox.

Talking about Firefox. The newest update basically destroyed all the sleek UI tweaks I made.
Using this add-on, it's nearly 90% back to what I was using. Give it a twirl if you're also troubled by it:

Whenever I start up Chrome for the first time and try to put in a URL, the browser freezes (and shows the 'loading/wait icon') for like 15 seconds before I can continue typing again.

It only does whenever I start Chrome for the first time after turning on my laptop. Does anyone know what's wrong?

At the moment I'm running parallel Firefox and Opera 22.

I need FF, because it has a good plugin for youtube and that damn blocking of foreign music here. Plus, Opera doesn't work with some pages like loading no pictures...

On Android I have Chrome running. The free alternatives all aren't satisfying, some slow, some with bugs or just not userfriendly.

That used to happen to me quite often and for downloading a pic it would always freeze for the first pic. What I've been doing lately is when I log off Chrome at the end of the day is to delete the history plus someone mentioned on settings to check the Send a "Do Not Track" request with your browsing traffic box, seems doing those things have solved the problems.

I want to move away from Chrome, but haven't found the perfect replacement. Used to run Firefox, and then Google created Chrome, which was definitely faster than Firefox.

Over couple of years, I had tried to go back using Firefox, but it was definitely slower than Chrome. With Chrome, I only need to restart my browser every few days, but with Firefox, I have to restart it every couple of hours before it becomes very sluggish (Note: I run them on a quite old laptop, so it might have effect).

Looking forward to the development of Firefox "Quantum" and also Brave (which is fast and blocks ad+tracking, but still doesn't support extension). Hopefully one of them can become good enough to replace Chrome.
