Kpop has made me look at a bunch of the jpop in my collection and make me wonder how the hell I was ever into it.  The variety of the music, the amount of training that they go through, and how there's a lot more singing with the diaphragm instead of the throat.  Dancing with the whole body, instead of parapara style, and the fluidity and ass shaking? Hellz yeah, that shit is awesome.  Collaborating with members of other groups in different agencies to put on AWESOME performances?  Ballin!  Most notably, the fact that the PERFORM THE ENTIRE SONG when they're on music shows, usually two or three times a week during the promotion time, something that for some reason doesn't happen in jpop which screws members who aren't always in front.  The wackiness of insane Netizens also makes me thankful that I'm not as stupid as they are, but you gotta acknowledge them for being passionate.  The whole entertainment industry is also making alot of strides outside of Korea, and not to just anime fans.  Lee Byung Hun in GI Joe, Rain in the Wachowski Bros movies, the remakes of Korean novellas in the Philippines, the Wonder Girls taking over America and placing on the BillBoard Charts, and a Korean Music Festival at the Hollywood Bowl in California that's been going on for now 8 years?  They're definitely doing SOMETHING right.

KT: I understand what you are feeling. I look at Jpop now and go, wow, what a difference. XD I find the arrangements and composition much more interesting in Kpop. Although I still like old Jpop stuff. :D

K-pop/culture made me realize that I'm actually attracted to Asian men, Korean men.  XD I actually had my first taste of k-pop around the late 90's when H.O.T. and SES were popular. And I found about them through a J-culture magazine. From there I wouldn't be introduced back to Korea until Japan went through the Yonsama phase and I had to check out what's so great about that Winter Sonata drama. From there I became addicted to k-dramas/movies which were 100x better than j-dramas/movies. I came back to k-pop around 2006 with Shinhwa, DBSK, Suju and claimed that I only love j-pop girl groups and k-pop guy groups. That is until the k-pop girl group revived and the rest is history. I also like the somewhat conservativeness of K-culture, like girls can be really sexy without having to be half naked. I mean I can't even look at the HP PBs I have anymore without feeling embarrassed.  And I agree with what KT said, they're certainly doing something right. The quality and how they go about doing things is so much better. And I also realized that Korean things are more accessible here in the States, at least in my area. There are so many Korean stores/restaurants that have been here for years that I'm now just starting to check out.

Also, it not only affected me but the people around me too. I've gotten my half Korean friend to embrace her Korean side even more since she takes her Filipino side mostly (even though she's only a quarter, the other quarter is Japanese. Asian mix FTW! XD). And at one time I've gotten a bunch of my Filipino friends and their families into K-dramas. They used to come to me asking if I have any new dramas on DVD. XD Lastly it helped distract me from personal things when I went through my "I hate everything Japanese" phase the first half of last year.  I learned to read/write/type Korean during that time.  :D

From a british born chinese (bbc) prospective, and not really understanding chinese (until 20 when i was fluentish), whenever i listened to chinese music I'd jus listen to the sound and the music with it. Then i got bored with all the ballads and then started to listen to Jpop. Also not understanding the lyrics the transition was easy adn the tunes were unique and different from most music i've heard.

Then later on in my life i heard of hot hyori n was like  :shocked :shocked :shocked :shocked :shocked for 10minutes !and the beats were good! (stay with my abit long and boring post) I moved to Korea to teach english, THEN WHAM in the country of Kpop Voila I've been turned and the concepts, beats, tunes n everything really grew on me. Especially the catchiness of the tune *cough* and the legs....

Kpop has made me like music more n enjoy the new fads, especially after going to a few concerts, mc mong/epik high/ dream concert.  :pimp:

You're kidding right

Sry I just have a problem with Kpop fans when the only way they can compliment Kpop is by dissing Jpop. No, Jpop isn't any worse just because you don't like it (anymore). It actually kinda makes me respect your opinion less.

Well, I guess its the major differences that I notice the most.  I'm not dissing jpop to be malicious or anything like that, in fact I think I've even given some very specific examples of how the industry does things differently, which isn't the fault of the artists themselves.  It just happens to be in the system that they're in.  Would someone like G Dragon have flourished the way he has creatively if he didn't train for 7 or 8 years or whatever under YG?  Would he have wound up an actor or a dancer if he were say, in Johnnys?  Who knows, I certainly don't.  The Jpop and Kpop comparison is easy to make because they're so massive.  People ask me why I don't listen to alot of Filipino music, and the answer is that its hard to find much online.  If it weren't for MochaNutz's Rantastic Voyage on jphip radio, I wouldn't know of a bunch of songs or artists that do rap and hip hop in the Philippines, because those artists don't get the same exposure as the power vocalists like Charice, for example.  Korea has a number of music shows and variety shows that are pretty accessible online, just like in Japan.  (Don't even get me started on Wowowee, one of the biggest shows in the Philippines, and the stuff they've done there, or the dance "talent" on Eat Bulaga, a show I've been watching since the early 80s)  If I like the guests enough, I'll check out the shows they're on.  I still try to catch Music Station, and the MSSL every year, just to check out certain artists that I still love to listen to, and to see what's going on with artists that I may have forgotten about.  I have every full length CD that YUI has released, almost all of Puffy's entire discography, and I had a BLAST watching Morning Musume in concert last summer.  I can't get away from jpop, nor do I want to try.  There's always gonna be new stuff coming out of there that some people will like, and others won't, just like everywhere else.  Maybe its because I'm a 30 year old man who's life has been changing drastically over the past 2 or 3 years career wise, and school wise?  Maybe.  Or, maybe its because Taeyeon's voice is amazing, and 2ne1's live performances are improving week after week in front of our very eyes, and Goo Hara trips over her feet at least once on every episode of Invincible Youth, and Park Jaebum doens't deserve to be ostracized because of a mistake he clearly made back in 2005, or how Hines Ward stomped racism right in the nuts in Korea by earning the respect of Koreans by doing something that no other Korean had done before.  Ok, I'm stretching that one a bit, but the industry as a whole has really REALLY captivated me, and its not because Jpop has changed.  Its actually Kpop, that has changed.  The crap they were putting out in the early 2000s doesn't compare to the stuff being released now.  I know that SNSD and the other girl groups respect SES, but the songs SES put out were really simplistic compared to nowadays.

Anyway, I've rambled on quite a bit here, and I have to get to my lab.  Then off for some hockey.

it's kinda funny, how my first experience with Asian music was BoA's Sara and SES's Cause I'm Your Girl,
then Morning Musume and Hello! Project kicked me into the J-pop phase, now just the last 2 years now,
i find myself back to listening to more and more K-pop.

the only reason i don't listen to as much J-pop as i used to is because i only followed a select few people.
Namie Amuro just came out with an album, but Ayumi Hamasaki, Rip Slyme, Bennie K, FLOW, Orange
Range, Asian Kung-Fu Generation, and more have either gone on vacation or just stopped. everytime
i try to listen to someone new, i don't like any of their stuff.

but K-pop on the other hand, i listen to someone new and i'm hooked almost each time.

edit: i used to make sure that i didn't have as much Korean stuff as Japanese stuff.

WHAT had k-pop done to me..
What has K-POP done to me..
What HAS k-pop done to me..
What has k-pop done to ME..

It's opened a whole new culture to me. Made me hate auto tune, then love it. I blame Korean movies and Jae Suk for giving me gateway to it. Then I saw Taeyeon belting it on some music show and it was over.

One thing that surprised me was how much relevance the fan army's and netizen culture gets. It even spills into the international fans. A lot of them are waaaaaay too interested in the drama rather than the music and entertainment. But the artists themselves are great and there's constantly something new if you follow a popular active group. :)

It opened my eyes that used to be glued to only japanese related things. Now don't get me wrong. I still enjoy my J-pop artists/groups as much as the K-pop artists/groups that I'm currently into. I won't stop learning japanese and switch to studying korean. My dream of becoming a translator or tutor may have changed just a little bit. Once I get better in japanese I'll try to free up some time to learn korean.

I'll just say this: J-pop is J-pop & K-pop is K-pop. There's no point in arguing over which is better. They both have many differences, but the one thing they have in common is they attract a lot of people's attentions.

AMEN. I get all weirded out when my fandoms interact because I get different things out of them. If I want great melodies, traditional bubblegum, concert tours, and underage girlsWTF  moments I go with J-pop, and if I want hard beats, addictive hooks, awesome performances, and bamf oldies GAHEE <3badass attitudes I go with Kpop. Sure there's some overlap, but not enough for me to angst about it seriously. It's like the people who make fandom wank about H!P vs. AKB48, and I get different perks from those groups too.

That said, the exception to this is DEFINITELY gamer!Ai-chan. And Sunny. Hawt geeks are hawt.

Kpop.... has made me more feminine XD
foocking pink.... Girls all over each other....
Yet, it's kept my straight, even with all the gay in it. I thank the hot Kpop men.  LOL

Haha but no, seriously, Kpop has made me love music all over again. It's also given me great insight on Asian entertainment and taught me a lot about music comparison and the music business in general (even outside Kpop). It's given me a lot of opportunities and I've met many people through working with some websites, so it's not at all bad.

Kpop's also sucked the life and money out of me. Lol especially since VERY few real life friends/people know about my passion for international music, Kpop's helped me meet new people that have the same passion for this crazy but super entertaining fandom. I've never had more fun following a fandom in my life. And even though sometimes Kpop stresses me out, I get great ass talent from awesome entertainers that it makes it all worthwhile when the antis flip a shit. It's also helped me realize my dream career path.

Damn, I love Kpop

Having another set of idols in a different culture has really let me nail down what I love about H!P. It's interesting that my H!P fandom had a mini-revival right around the Oh-RDR transition, and it's because Kpop has made me really appreciate some of the things in Jpop. Such as END ROLL from AKB48.

The songs: Kpop's numbers are better for putting on your running playlist. However, they do tend to beat their hooks to death. Jpop numbers generally have better songwriting, but aren't necessarily as immediately catchy.

The arrangements: Kpop arrangements are are steeped in techno and BEATS BEATS BEATS, due to the dance nature of the songs. Jpop arrangements not only use less autotune, but they have much more variety in styles, as well as using synthesized orchestra instruments more than the electronic synths. Oh's retro-pop style would have sounded quite Ayaya if it weren't for its electro arrangements. But this also means that the many layers in Jpop arrangements are more apparent.  For example, Tan Tan Taan! has a freaking genius arrangement with counter-melodies and bells and whistles that weave together seamlessly to sound deceptively simple. The guitar/piano remixes from Tivoler do a good job to show how many different counter-melodies went into classic H!P numbers.(My favorite is this one (http://"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qS7Du-q2DAE"), all of the different parts are cheesily mixed in the original but here you can here them all given their fair weight)

Ballads: Don't even get me started on the freaking Kpop ballads. Same old, same old, all over again with the same guitar/piano-->strings-->mind-blowing orchestra/rock band climax --> cooldown back into guitar/piano formula abusing the suspended cymbal crescendoes. You heard one you heard them all. Jpop ballads vary much more in style, including your laidback numbers (http://"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JtJO-8wQ3Iw") to your laidback-but-upbeat numbers (http://"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccIqZZ6iGys") to your big choruses (http://"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kt_X2Hab2BA") to your choral pieces (http://"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddT3Z2RLUSk"), sometimes all in the same song.  Of course there exceptions, like select BEG and Epik High numbers.(Although the one BEG song  (http://"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88BjUIjuT9c") reminds me of good ol' Taiyou to Ciscomoon and/or Minmi )

Remixes: Kpop remixes are mostly techno-based, playing up their danceability. H!P remixes on the other hand were largely rock rearrangements, and others doing completely different stuff like CosmoTiger's disco pieces or Nothing But the Girl's Acid? mixes. So Kpop remixes tend to be more fun but Jpop remixes more creative.(Like The Charmy Show  XD)

Talent: Kpop wins hands down.  But because the bar is so much higher in Kpop, that means its much easier to see who has the It Factor in Jpop, who can dance beyond your standard idol crap.(Takahashi, Saki, Noro, Matsubara Natsumi, etc) It also meant that I immediately identified RDR as an idol dance in contrast to the awesomeness that is ITNW.(and its fucking REMIX! hot shit there!)

Personality: This is really a cultural thing. J-variety is a lot more vicious, with the hosts doing everything they can to humiliate the idols. In contrast, K-variety is utterly in love with their idols and praises them to the high heavens. Any embarassment of Kpop idols is usually self-inflicted. I'd say most of the AKB48 frontgirls have as much spunk as say, SNSD though. So J-variety has a lot more physical humor and WTF moments where K-variety tends to have more dialogue and snark moments. This also means that I needs subs for Kpop much more than I do for Jpop. With Jpop, I had enough of a comprehension of idol-japanese to get the gist of the members' evaluations in MM DVD Magazine 23.  :nervous, but I definitely can't do that with Kpop.

hmmmm.
I started out exclusively listening to jpop in like 7th grade. Then i got exposed to kpop in between 8th and 9th. I found the variety of voices to be much richer and quality than jpop. I love jpop, but now kpop has overtaken it.
Well that and when my hard drive crashed between 8th and 9th grade, i lost ALL my jpop. LOL after graduating from high school i am now officially kpopped..
but its true, jpop and kpop are two different animals. :]

K-pop has helped me branch out into different styles of music and has definitely got me more interestested in korea in general. It could never replace Jpop for me though. I think kpop has the best big girl groups like snsd kara T-ara. Perfume is my favorite trio though. I really appreciate how talented and varyingly skilled kpop artists are.

in the interest of saving time I'd have to talk about what kpop hasn't done to me lol

seriously though, I never knew there was a kpop fanboy in me. there isn't anything about me that would clue you into this secret world of mine if you knew me in real life. Not that there's a stereotypical kpop fan mold or anything, I don't mean that at all... it's just that if I listed my interests and activities, kpop would stick out like a sore thumb. I hated 90's american pop. HATED it. Now I get choked up when I see my bias' cry or see them win stuff.

I same with you,
previously I like K-pop very much,
I love the group is;
SNSD, Kara, T-ara, Wonder Girl, Miss A, Sistar, Big Bang, Secret, Brown Eye Girl, 4 minute.
but because Korea having new group born,
MASS PRODUCTION... and those group have less news about it,
it become less and less hearing Korea song now. =(

K-pop made me hate all this new American Pop music. I still love the 80s and 90s music though.

It didn't make me hate American pop, I already hated it. Maybe it's the pretty girls, maybe it's the fact that I don't understand much of what they're singing, maybe it's that I live in Korea and am constantly exposed but I actually like Kpop. Kpop made me like kpop :p

Aside from being more interested into Korean culture, it was one of the reasons it motivated me to get into shape.

I see these cut/brolic asian dudes dancing around, and I'm thinking "Hey I'm an asian guy too, I can look like that?"  :O (although not exactly, but close enough  8)2)
