The Obscure Band/Artist Thread
« on: October 01, 2006, 11:16:07 AM »
In the spirit of Punk Rock I thought I'd make a thread where you can post about some bands or artists that most people have probably never heard of. I'm always looking for new bands to listen to so I thought this would be a good way to do that, as well as share some of my findings with those interested.

Anyways,

I just found about this band called Capock today, they seem pretty awesome. Sorta like a jazzy pop band. The vocalist is also pretty cute :P

their website http://capock.net/

here's a vid of a street perfromance

the guy who upped it has tons street perfromances from parks in Tokyo, some are pretty good and some are pretty horrible.

Oh shit, Capock!

I caught one of their street lives when I was in Japan. :O Good stuff, indeed.

They're pretty nice. I looked through some of his vids, and indeed some are pretty bad. I found to sound pretty good.

Alright, to pimp some of my favorites.

アンチノイズ (Antinoise)

http://sound.jp/antinoise/

Music style is just plain pop/rock, I guess. I was fooled by their street live since that was a lot harder than their studio recordings. They've released two mini-albums so far, the latest one was just recently, 4 days ago.

ラヴスナイパー (Love Sniper)

http://www.lovesniper.jp/

Good stuff. I hate myself for not buying their album. Saw them at the "pipes of piece" event in Yoyogi Park. One of their songs is currently being used in a CM for some show I've never heard of. Oh, and their bassist is awesome.

ゆやゆよん (Yuyayuyon)

http://www.yuyayuyon.com/

My current favorite. It was instant love, I tell you! They're crazy as fuck. Discovered them in the same event as Love Sniper.

Capock is pretty cool, I like their sound. As is Drunk Girls, they remind me of GO!GO!

Damn Ayabie knows a bunch of cool bands :o
I haven't heard the other two, but I got that Yuyayon single, which was pretty sweet.

Here's a band I found out about from reading through HALCALI's blog. Yucali picked up their new album and she liked it a lot.

i-dep

http://www.i-dep.jp/

Electronic dance/pop band, who also throw in jazz in their sound. Pretty close to Fantastic Plastic Machine and Mondo Grosso esque stuff. They have a nice male/female vocal combination. I've only heard samples on their site, and its pretty good stuff. If anyone has their stuff hook me up

Speaking of Antinoise

here's a street live from the same guy as the capock one :P

Here's another band called bicycle http://www.bicycle4.com/
they're a pretty generic pop/rock band, but still a nice listen. the vocalist needs a little work, but it's not too bad. They had three songs for dl yesterday but it seems they took two down... I dled them but can't remember the titles as there were no tags or titled in the filename. :/

One of my recent favorite bands right now is Ogre You Asshole. I mentioned them on IRC a few times. They're not as obscure as the other ones mentioned in this thread but still not really known. They're pretty mellow rock. You can listen to some of their songs on their myspace account which is linked in their site. It has a song from their new mini album.

Oh and nice bands guys.

I've been looking for Ogre You Asshole's stuff on SoulSeek but to no avail...

Some more bands.

hot hip trampoline school

http://www.hhts.net/index2.html

This shit is awesome. Not as obscure as the above bands, but they don't seem that popular. I'm lucky that I managed to find one of their albums. They play a mix of funk/jazz/rock, with occasional vocals.

Bash the Monkey
http://bash-net.com/

Not particularly interesting, just generic hard rock. These guys seem to play a street live once every week, and at the same time and place, too. Apparently they're good friends with Capock. Capock's guitarist substituted for one of their members when he was sick. It was fun seeing him improvise.

Oh, and here's a pic from the Yuyayuyon performance, by the way.

They were performing "Yu", which pretty much is a strange monologue by Ueno, the bassist.

How obscure is obscure and what is obscure enough for this thread? :P

Video Artist / Musician from Kyoto, born in 1979.
http://www.takagimasakatsu.com/

I can't really classify his music, it varies, but it's rather minimalistic and reminds me of ACO (irony album), Yann Tiersen and ma-a-aybe World's End Girlfriend (like weg-ultralite lol)... you can tell I suck at genres, so sample!

I have their album and demo shared on soulseek(i actually got them both from soulseek). I'm usually in the japanese indie room, so look for me in there. You have to be in my list to see my files so you can PM me or something. Anyone else interested, just pm me on slsk as I'm usually there.

If there are enough people who want it, post here or pm me and I guess I could up it on some server.

Just noticed this question... Really that's all up to the person posting. I really don't care at all, they could be a pretty famous band, but if you think they aren't really in the spotlight and you'd like to show/introduce them to more people, it's all good really.

Even if you know that I or others know the band, post it anyways, cause there is most likely someone who hasn't and would like them.

Three posts in a row

I recently got into the band NATSUMEN. They're not really that obscure but I have never noticed anyone here mention them.

Amazing instrumental band. I guess you can say they're a mix of Jazz and post-rock. They sort of sound like a post-rock skapara. I highly reccomend them to anyone looking for something a little different. They haven't really released much though.

Always been bad with genres, but they call it 'guitar rock with elements of new wave/dance music' on Japanese wiki XD

ATORI

Official site: http://atori.cc/
Samples etc: http://www.audioleaf.com/atori

Any band with a mix of male/female vocals gets my vote. It's tough to get their stuff since they're not playing around Tokyo, though.

i don't know where to go and this like the most likely place for me to ask this.

I wanna get some info on 3 groups. i try yahoo and google search them but nothing seems to come up.

1. BAAD, who sang the opening song to Slam Dunk - Kimiga sukidato sakebitai

2. Pulltab to Kan (or Can), they sang the song wonderful days from one of the Prince of tennis anime ending theme song.
3. SYMBOL - they sang one of Initial D 4th Stage insert song "forever Young"

like i said, i try searching the net for their info but to no avail.  with BAAD, i actually got their group name because i got to obtain a slam dunk ost and that's what was listed as the artist.  since it's been like a decade now, im not suprised that no one would know them, but Slam dunk when it ran was an extremely popular manga and anime throughout asia so maybe someone HAD heard of them and the song is truly awesome.  With Pulltab to Kan and SYMBOL, since both the anime that it came with is recent, im hoping that someone would know something about them.

well that's all i have to say, if anyone have any info on the 3, please respond either post it here or via PM if it's not too much trouble. thanks

i didn't where i can post this so i thought this was the most likely place to ask questions. im terribly sorry if im wrong and post this at the wrong place.  I've been scolded about it b4 so i'm trying to be careful.

Stretching "obscure" to pop levels~ >_>;

Hayashi Asuca (林 明日香)
http://www.asuca.jp/
http://ameblo.jp/asuca-hayashi

Child prodigy with an amazingly strong lower voice, released 3 albums and went to obscurity all thanks to Toshiba-EMI :x
Here's her debut song ake-kaze, it's hard to believe she was just 13 when it was released.

Wow she has a really strong voice for a 13 year old o_o It's actually stronger than many singers much older than her XD It reminds me of Nakashima Mika.

Have anything else?

Sure, here's her 3rd album Chou :) She self-produced it, and she was like 16, so she's a damn genius lol

So, Asuca hasn't released anything for over a year and even joined a band (I don't think they've done anything beyond a few gigs), but she's finally releasing a single in March \o/
