Title: JPH!P Steam Community
Post by: LaJon on September 29, 2007, 04:37:40 PM
With the addition of Steam's new friends community, I wanted to put together a page for us as a way to be able to play the various steam games together.

http://steamcommunity.com/groups/jphip

It's invitation only, so you just need to add me (LaJon) to your Steam friends list and send me a message for an invite.  I'd rather it be a public group and all, but I don't even see the option to change it.  If I can talk to someone over at Steam and get it changed, when you'll be able to join right on the page.

RISE FROM YOUR GRAVE

bumpin

Let's get the Steam group jumping! Add LaJon or me >> bovell, and we'll whip you an invite ASAP

Time to get some hot hot L4D/TF2/Borderlands/etc action happening -- DO IT

Come on guys, don't pretend you aren't pumped for Borderlands dropping tomorrow (or already out for you Yanks), or enjoy slaughtering zombies!

Let's get some co-op shit going in these bad boys! I'm also packing TF2, Day of Defeat: Source, and a bunch of others.  :cokecat:

I'd even settle for playing some HL2: Deathmatch with you guys, you can get it for free (just pick the link for your videocard brand)!

To bump yet again, some free Source mods that we could all get together in are:

Eternal Silence (http://store.steampowered.com/app/17550/) - My favorite, though few play unfortunately. Hot outer-space dog-fighting followed by sweet control-point action in giant spaceships. :jerk: Different classes, variety of weapons and ships to pilot.

Zombie Panic: Source (http://store.steampowered.com/app/17500/) - A fun mod, start as a survivor, and try to survive zombies. After you get killed, you become a zombie hunting the people. Weapons are lulz-worthy. Not quite like L4D, supports more people, and (last I knew) there are no super zombies. Has a good number of people always on.

Age of Chivalry (http://store.steampowered.com/app/17510/) - Castles and knights everywhere, pretty much. Several different classes and game modes. Played a fair bit as well.

NeoTokyo (http://neotokyohq.com/) - Had a ton of hype. Played it a bit after release, and it was pretty cool.
Post: thoughts, opinions on these bad boys, and post suggestions of other baller games we could run. :cokecat:

Hope you guys enjoyed the early holiday sale Steam has been running. Did you pick anything up during this 5 day event, or wait in the hopes that the probable sale around Christmas will be better?

Going to grab Monkey Island and Evil Genius myself, and maybe Mirror's Edge. Would have bought KOTOR again, had I had the money then. Definitely would get the THQ pack if I had enough to kick around for that, but it's on sale all the time it seems.

Don't forget, add bovell or Lajon to Steam and get an invite to the JPH!P group!

You all need to go grab the free business from Steam (HL2 Deathmatch), so we can get a couple rounds of that hot action in. Just pick the proper link:

ATI users (http://www.steampowered.com/ati_offer1a/) - NVIDIA users (http://www.steampowered.com/nvidia/)

Also: SERIOUS SAM UP IN HERE :tama-mad: I'm on my computer again, with a decent connection now, so let's get a huge game going!

Saturday is Mass Effect games.
Sunday is Dragon Age games.

Dead Space and DA: Awakening are on my list if they're 50% or more off.

Mirror's Edge is fantastic. I bought it for $5 over this past holiday sale. Easily one of the best games I've played in a long time (even if it came out almost two years ago). Mass Effect is killer, everyone should nab that if they somehow haven't played them yet.

I'm starting to regret passing up on that $5 Mirror's Edge deal. :banghead: Low disk space and a recent tendency to see games as distractions made me reluctant to pull the trigger...hopefully another deal will come again. Some of the current sales prices seem tempting, especially the Unreal and Codemasters Racing packages.

If anyone feels like adding me, my account name is J-Triumf (of course).

Moonbase Alpha
Quote
NASA has once again landed on the lunar surface with the goal of colonization, research, and further exploration. Shortly after the return to the Moon, NASA has established a small outpost on the south pole of the moon called Moonbase Alpha. Utilizing solar energy and regolith processing, the moonbase has become self-sufficient and plans for further expansion are underway.

In Moonbase Alpha, you assume the exciting role of an astronaut working to further human expansion and research. Returning from a research expedition, you witness a meteorite impact that cripples the life support capability of the settlement. With precious minutes ticking away, you and your team must repair and replace equipment in order to restore the oxygen production to the settlement.

Team coordination along with the proper use and allocation of your available resources (player controlled robots, rovers, repair tools, etc.) are key to your overall success. There are several ways in which you can successfully restore the life support system of the lunar base, but since you are scored on the time spent to complete the task, you have to work effectively as a team, learn from decisions made in previous gaming sessions, and make intelligence decisions in order to top the leaderboards.

Two years ago Valve hired the talented team behind the popular top down co-op mod Alien Swarm. Since then they have been busy working on the Left 4 Dead Series, and now Portal 2. However, we never forgot about Alien Swarm and the team has spent a lot of time bringing the game to Source in between their contributions to the other Valve projects.

On Monday, July 19th Alien Swarm is going to be released for free via Steam.

In addition to the game, Valve will also release the complete code base for Alien Swarm. This includes updates to the Source engine SDK and full Steamworks integration. If you’ve ever thought about developing a mod on the Source engine with Steamworks, this release provides more insight and examples for using Steamworks in game production.

Right now THQ is having a huge sale on PC games at their own website:
http://store.thq.com/store/thq/en_US/list&parentCategoryID=&categoryID=39206600&resultsPerPage=42 (http://store.thq.com/store/thq/en_US/list&parentCategoryID=&categoryID=39206600&resultsPerPage=42)

Two of the games, Metro 2033 and Saints Row 2, are listed as being able to be activated through Steam:
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-wusf-3601 (https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-wusf-3601)

I just confirmed that it works with Saints Row 2, being unable to pass up the $5 deal (the game still costs $30 if bought in the Steam store). I just bought the game at the THQ store, they e-mailed me a registration key, and I just entered the key in Steam's product activation. I assume it would be the same for Metro 2033 as well ($50 @ Steam, $12.50 @ THQ right now); not so sure about the other games. I also assume this is only for US residents as well.

In other news, I probably should set my status to away when I go to sleep. Once this game is done downloading I'll try out Alien Swarm online; the game really could use gamepad support.

Any interest in a zombie coop??

"Nation Red is an ultra fast infinite play arena-based shooter providing an exceptional close-quarter battlefield experience. Fight thousands of zombie mutants and their bosses in frantic bloody gameplay while earning over 70 perks. August 17, 1977Scattered groups of zombies infiltrate remote Midwestern towns."

It's 4,49€ today, but you can also get 4 copies of it for 13,48€ and give the extra copies to friends.

I guess I'll get the demo and see if I can run it/what it's like. Seems kinda nightmarish though lol I hate people running at me.. aliens I am ok with, but people (even zombie people)?? Creepy as hell

Amplifier hinted they might be putting more of "these types of" games on sale now so hum
Maybe should wait for some better one idk XD

Also I read the forums, and
[14:28] <shirenu> it sounds like the kind of 'swarm' killing that would get old fast
[14:29] <shirenu> since u don't even get to plan strategy
[14:29] <shirenu> at least AS has some room for strategy xD

(AS = Alien Swarm)

I tried the demo tutorial and it seems like endless mindless shooting with random weapon pick ups... Which can be fun but I think I'd rather pay for something a little more 'strategic'

So yes I suggested a game and now I'm taking it back hahaha

New Release - VVVVVV

VVVVVV (http://store.steampowered.com/app/70300/) is now available on Steam. To commemorate its release, the game is available at a 10% discount now through September 14th, 2010 10AM Pacific Time.

VVVVVV is a retro-styled 2D platformer by Terry Cavanagh. You play as the fearless leader of a team of dimension exploring scientists who inadvertently crash, and are separated. The game involves exploring the strange world you've found yourself in, and reuniting your friends.

VVVVVV explores one simple game mechanic: you cannot jump - instead, you reverse your own gravity at the press of a button. The game focuses on playing with this mechanic in a variety of interesting ways.

The game is designed not to artificially gate your progress. In VVVVVV there are no locks, no power-ups, no switches, nothing to stop you progressing except the challenges themselves.

Now through December 20th, the Great Steam Treasure Hunt will have folks spending time in the tropical sun, earning Steam Achievements in select games, joining Community groups, and earning a slot atop the Steam Leaderboards all in the name of winning free games. Every 48 hours a new set of four tasks will be announced. Select games will also be on sale throughout The Great Steam Treasure Hunt.

Completing a objective qualifies you for a drawing to win the top 5 games on your Wishlist. Each objective has its own drawing, so the more you complete, the better your chances. At the end of the Great Steam Treasure Hunt, there will also be three grand prize winners, each awarded 100 individual Steam games of their choosing. Importantly, our lawyers tell us at this point to say, "No purchase necessary" and to check out the official rules here: http://store.steampowered.com/treasurehunt. (http://store.steampowered.com/treasurehunt.)

The first objectives are:
  • Self Portrait: Setup an avatar on your Steam Community profile.
  • Got Tanked?: Earn the Desert Fox Steam Achievement in R.U.S.E.
  • Up the Ante: Win The Iron Curtain in Poker Night at the Inventory
  • More Cowbell: Set a leaderbord score of at least 1,124,400 in easy mode for the 'Paul Hartnoll' level in Chime

The promotions over the next 48 hours are:
  • 33% off R.U.S.E.
  • 40% off Poker Night at the Inventory
  • 75% off Chime

Good luck!

The Humble Indie Bundle #2
Quote
Pay what you want. If you bought these five games separately, it would cost around $85 but we're letting you set the price!

All of the games work great on Mac, Windows, and Linux.

We don't use DRM. When you buy these games, they are yours. Feel free to play them without an internet connection, back them up, and install them on all of your Macs and PCs freely. There is no time-limit on your downloads.

You can support charity. Choose exactly how your purchase money is divided: Between the game developers, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, or the Child's Play Charity. Also, if you like this deal, a tip to the Humble Bundle itself would be much appreciated!
Quote
On your download page, you can optionally get a key to redeem the games on Steam and / or Desura. Not all of the games are on Steam yet: Cortex Command and Revenge of the Titans will automatically be added to your library once they make their Steam debut.

Revenge of the Titans

At first they came from the skies, and we repelled them with hired spaceships on a shoestring budget! Now they’re back, and they’re sending their ground troops to destroy our bases – thirty-ton monsters with glowing eyes and slavering jaws! And we still don’t have any money!

Quickly assemble a defensive position using blaster turrets, upgrades, tiny battledroids, barricades, mines, tangleweb, whilst obtaining the necessary funds by mining nearby resources as the relentless march of the Titans approaches the base. Research new technology and buildings as you defend the Earth bases throughout the solar system from the Titan onslaught. This is the ultimate mash-up of real-time strategy and tower defense.

Does that mean Steam will not delete large files anymore and redownload them again (example: The Witcher 2 ) but instead patch them by only modifying the file? because that would be sweet
Quote
Yes, better incremental patching of large files (without the developers having to think about it in advance) is one thing it improves. We'll talk more about what the new content system improves when it gets closer to fully rolling out.

Free To Play Games Have Arrived on Steam

Quote
Five F2P Launch Titles Offering Exclusive Content to Celebrate Launch

Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Counter-Strike, Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, Portal, and Team Fortress) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today introduced support for Free to Play (F2P) Games on Steam with the launch of five F2P games.

Available immediately, the launch titles are Spiral Knights, Forsaken Worlds, Champions Online: Free for All, Global Agenda: Free Agent, and Alliance of Valliant Arms (AVA).

Beginning tomorrow (Weds) with Spiral Knights and concluding Sunday with AVA, each of the five launch titles will offer exclusive in-game content to those who try the "F2P game of the day" on Steam. In game transactions in all of the titles will be supported by Steam's micro-transaction backend system that is available to Steamworks partners and currently used in Valve's Team Fortress 2.

"The introduction of Free to Play games is another example of the constant evolution of Steam," said Jason Holtman, director of business development at Valve. "Free to Play games offer new game genres and game experiences for customers, while offering developers and publishers new revenue opportunities and the ability to reach customers in areas of the world where the traditional packaged goods model is less popular than F2P."

Specific details on the F2P games of the day and their exclusive in-game content will be made available in the coming days.

Steam is a leading platform for PC & Mac games and digital entertainment serving over 1,500 games to over 30 million active accounts worldwide. For more information, please visit www.steamgames.com (http://www.steamgames.com)

http://www.develop-online.net/news/38103/Team-Fortress-2-becomes-free-forever (http://www.develop-online.net/news/38103/Team-Fortress-2-becomes-free-forever)

Quote
Triple-A becomes free-to-play, but Valve may not push the model to other blockbusters

Valve has once again turned to Team Fortress 2 as the studio’s outlet for experimentation, this time with a daring move to make the triple-A game entirely free to play.

The Orange Box game has undergone a radical transformation since its 2007 release; with more than 200 updates made to the PC edition. But today’s patch is billed as the most daring yet, with PC and Mac customers given the 'full experience' without ever needing to pay anything at all.

And in an exclusive interview with Develop – now live – Valve’s Robin Walker assured that Team Fortress 2 would only be monetised by microtransaction payments.

No advertising model will be pursued, Walker said. No premium subscription model will be used. No cynical “pay-to-win” options will be implemented, he assured.

In-game items will now be the only way Valve gets any money from Team Fortress 2. But again, Walker assured that the number of gratis in-game items – which are released on a daily basis – would not dry up.

“We've been toying with the idea of making Team Fortress free-to-play ever since the Mann-conomy update [in September 2010],” Walker said.

“The data we got back from that update leads us to believe that TF2 would be more successful as a completely free product.”
COMMUNITY FIRST

However, Walker said there was no data yet to suggest that the free-to-play model would be appropriate for other Valve games.

"It seems dangerous to assume that [free-to-play would work] for all our products," he said.

The Washington-based studio, freed from the contraints of retail, has the liberty to experiment with its digital products and its avid Steam community – something that would not be possible to implement across brick and mortar game stores.

“Over the years we've done a bunch of price experimentations with Team Fortress 2,” Walker said, “going all the way down to $2.49 in our random one-hour Halloween sales.

“The more we've experimented, the more we've learned there are fundamentally different kinds of customers, each with their own way of valuing the product.”

He said making a triple-A game completely free to play would teach the studio much more about its customers.

"We'll know a heck of a lot more in a couple of months, and that's the kind of thing that gets us excited around the office," he said.

The wider hope is that Team Fortress 2 going free will help allure the customers that aren’t willing to pay a flat fee for the game – a move that ties in well with Valve’s “games as a service” model.

That well-referenced credo stresses the importance of deeply engaging with a gaming community; to learn everything about the customer and adapt to their tastes and budget.

“We’re always improving on the relationship we have with our customers, and we’re willing to run experiments if we think it will help us learn how to do that better,” Walker said.

He added that a key motivation for making Team Fortress 2 free is the desire to get as many people as possible playing online.

“It's a belief of ours that in multiplayer games it's generally true that the more people playing the game, the higher value the game has for each individual customer.

“The more players, the more available servers in your area, the wider variety of other players you'll find, the greater the opportunity for new experiences, and so on.”

If you've bought it before you'll have premium now

Everyone get it and plaaay!
TF2 is so much fun, I used to play it a lot then I got bored but I've been playing again a bit lately with my brother. The whole hats and items and trading crap is meh but it doesn't stop you from enjoying the real fun of the game. The only problem is it is really hard to play between countries so if we were all to play on the same server it'd have to be a West coast US server. East coast, the lag is like 350ms for me and too much packet loss. :( I couuld try setting up TF2 server on our host and it would be ok for people in Europe maybe East Coast US people but impossible for me to play XD.

Ah steam...haven't been on there for ages.

I think I'm called LightningAC or Deagle_zero or something, can't remember cos I forgot my password a big while back (and cbfed to game any more LOL, CoD:Black Ops is gay).

I'll probably get back on sometime to play with you guys, but I thought they allocated servers according to people in the same country, which means it'd lag a lot to play an 'international' match.

Anyone getting ready for some MW3/Battlefield 3 when they come out? (I only play FPSes when I'm not on anime).

SR2 has a better city, mission/cutscene replays and more character customization options, but has a good chance of running like shit on your system. SR3 is a bit more polished with gameplay mechanics and graphics, more weapons and vehicle options, and runs more smoothly, but loses a few things that made the previous game great.

LotrO is now on steam! http://store.steampowered.com/app/212500/ (http://store.steampowered.com/app/212500/)
Also, the $15 starter pack would be tempting if I was just starting http://store.steampowered.com/app/213174 (http://store.steampowered.com/app/213174)
It's basically $10 worth turbine points, + 3 quest packs (North Downs, Evendim & Misty Mountains; combined, these cost more than 1000tp), + a horsey you can use from the beginning which is a great travelling bonus... Yeah it'd be really worth it if I didn't have these quest packs already...
