Hi Dan, hi everyone

I just have to say thank you, thank you, thank you (!) for making these
oldies available.  Back in February, after listening to some Peanuts albums,
I started listening to whatever jpop and enka music I could find - and in short
order found this site with your posts.  I've been on a tear ever since.  I haven't
been able to get enough - these Japanese oldies are a new world for me and
there is just so much to explore (and far more than I could afford to shell out).
Dan, I think you are among the few who really attempt to get these tunes out
to the fans.

A few months ago, I had no idea who Misori Hibari, Sayuri Ishikawa, Momoe
Yamaguchi, Mori Masako, Ishida Ayumi, Judy Ongg (Teresa Teng!), etc., etc.,
etc., were.  You can imagine what its been like trying to process So Much
in such a short time - yet I'm having a blast (well, uh, driving my wife up a wall
too, heh).

Dan - you da Man!

And I am so kickin' it old-skool

Thanks for the praise, I'm just glad someone likes them.  Yes, it seems not many people listen to the old stuff and it's really hard finding anyone who's enthusiastic about it.  If you look on youtube you'll find a wealth of material, just search by their names (in Japanese often gives better results, but try both) and you'll find many videos.  Also look at the persons username, if you find someone who's uploaded several videos, click on their name and look at what videos they've uploaded.  I do that, then just look at the thumbnails and download all the b&w videos as I know they're the old ones!  (keepvid.com lets you download the videos from youtube and dailymotion as higher quality mp4 files.)
There's one guy called subpop who's the absolute king of Momoe videos, you'll find his name cropping up on all sorts of video sites across the net, but he deletes his youtube page every few months so download it or it's gone.
Watching the old videos I'm amused that with lots of things that we've seen with Hello! Project has all been done before - Sports festivals, Neoki (Idols being surprised & woken up in their beds), the fans chanting during the songs (The Momoe wota with their little megaphones!), the whole audition/voice training/etc process.

I've got some more oldies albums, I'll upload some more in the coming days/weeks.
If anyone else has anything to contribute to this thread then please do.  I'd love to hear an album by Jackie Yoshikawa & Blue Comets.  I love their song Blue Chateau (and they had the same keyboard sound as H!P act twe'lv, which is probably because they used the exact same make of keyboard.)

Dan, you are unstoppable -
I can't believe all the goodness  :shocked

Its great that you include extras like cover art and playlists
for all of these releases.

I think I should change my name, because I'm a newbie and
'enkafan' can't really be applied to a newcomer like me -
though I do tend to like several genres from the past, including
early American country blues, 1920s jazz and swing from the 1950s.
Of course, its relatively easy and inexpensive to get any of that.

I grew up watching a lot of samura movies because my dad was
an Akira Kurasawa fan.  I don't speak Japanese but the language
is comfortable to my ears.  I guess its not to surprising that
I like the sounds of Enka as well as more modern 'Jpop (especially if
its from the 1960s and 70s - it would be unconscionable to
make any requests considering how very much you've provided,
but I will keep visiting here in case anything else from those eras
shows up).  Anyway, I'm listening to these files almost every day -
next time I post I'll try to mentions ome of my favs.
Be well!

-Matt

60's & 70's?  Well, I think the most recent one from this collection is from 1965.  Thanks must also go to a guy called Vaqueteo who posted  these on a newsgroup.  I think I mentioned earlier, he had a collection of cassettes and cd's but was reluctant to post them with no song titles so he sent me scans of the covers and I was able to help do the romaji and then he posted them.

Amazing, Dan - Domo Arigato!

As I listen and try to learn about Enka, many questions arise.  I've read that
women singers have typically enjoyed greater popularity.  It seems this is true
to an extent, but I notice that many of the releases you have posted have a
at least a 50-50 mix of male singers (if not more).  I wonder if it is because
male singers were more popular during the 40s and 50s?

There's a ton to go through, but I'm really liking "Nankoku No Yoru" by Mishima
Toshio (off the Seiki ni Tsutaetai Vol. 3) ~ its just an awesome song I just can't
get enough of! :yep:

I felt the same when I heard Suizenji Kiyoko's "Arigatou no Uta" (from a TV & radio themes collection I'll post soonish). After listening to the album I put that song on repeat and couldn't stop listening to it, then went and found a load of her stuff on youtube.

Interesting you should mention her, I've actually watched some of the
video's of Suizenji Kiyoko on youtube - I was immidiately struck by her
stage personna - very lively and kind of doing her own thing.

Thanks for the welcome!

Over the past several months, I've grown fond of
many Enka & Jpop performers.  I'm not exactly sure why
I've taken to it so much (particularly the female singers -
those kimonos are too sexy I guess ).

As I've looked around I've noticed a few sites that
have LOADS of downloadable Enka.  You may of
course have heard of several of these artists, but
if anyone asks me, these names come to mind.

Enka performers I really like:

Sayuri Ishikawa
Aki Yashiro
Chiyoko Shimakura
Toshimi Tagawa
of course, Keiko Fuji
(I'm not as huge on Misora Hibari
as so many are, but out of respect
I should mention her)

Some great pop vocalists (some have
done Enka) that I really like include:

Peanuts
Momoe Yamaguchi
Teresa Teng (the late but ever great Taiwanese singer)
Ayumi Ishida
Kayoki Moriyama
Mayumi Itsuwa
Yuki Saori
Naomi Sagara

Some sites where you can listen and/or download
include Beemp3.com and video4viet.com.  Blogs
are great sources too.  I also joined mp3panda.com
because they have some some of the above-mentioned
singers.

Of course, the easiest and most costly option is
buying the CDs outright (which can be a tad expensive).
Now Dan has put a "huge" amount of music up here and
it's the best thing going for anyone who wants to sample
the Enka and Jpop of the 20s through the 70s.

Speaking of blogs with juicy mp3s, I found the following site yesterday.
Its not Enka, and aside from TT's songs these are 60s music tracks
(from China, Taiwan?) and well worth a listen!  Looks to be about
8 tracks   :twothumbs

http://gaaak.blogspot.com/2006/05/asian-delights_22.html

Teresa Teng - High Green Mountain (aka Girl of Ah Li Shan)
Teresa Teng - Last Night in My Dreams
Rita Chao & The Quests - Love is Me, Love is You
Doris and the Sandboys - (unknown title)
Chan Pao Chu - She Wants to Get Marry
Vampires - Han Yu Qu (Chilling Rain Song)
Unknown artists - It Never Rains in Southern California
Stevie Loraine and the Claansmen - You Always Say

Aside from Teng, I don't know these acts, so I'll be looking
around for some info on them.  If anyone gets to listen,
please post your thoughts.

PS. Since originally posting this I found a few other sites with
what appears to be the same material.  However, while I trust the
above-mentioned site, at least one other had spy-ware,
so PLEASE tread with caution - I know what its like to get
viruses, etc.!
