SAPPORO -- An 81-year-old man has been arrested for paying a junior high school girl for sex at a hotel here, police said.

Nobuhiro Nakamura, from Sapporo, is thought to be the oldest person in Hokkaido arrested in violation of the child prostitution and pornography law that took effect in 1999.

well, the pickup line isn't without context. prostitution is illegal, but the definition of prostitution is very narrow, specifyied by directly receiving genital-genital intercourse through compensation (money). so there's a subculture of enjo-kousai (compensated dating) where girls accompany older men on dates (meals, movies, etc). since there's no express requirement for sex, it technically skids the definition of prostitution (although the males usually expect sex, natch).

i'd be pretty damn proud if my plumbing was still operational at 81, though going for a teenager at that age...

Enjo kosai isn't that uncommon in Japan. But for someone to get caught that is at least 3 times the age of the girl is completely revolutionary. There may as well be a whole lot of other 80+ year old men out there looking for enjo kosai right now but they will probably be more careful from now on.

And something really subtle maybe most of you missed (I missed too on first reading): the guy is being arrested for paying for sex, not for having sex with a 14 years old.

I think paying for it makes it worse than just having it anyways.
