Title: The Girl Rock Thread
Post by: StreakInTheSky on December 02, 2006, 10:04:04 AM
I love Japanese girl bands. Ever since back in 03 when I discovered Zone for the first time. And I know lots of others here love them too.

What I concider a girl band is pretty much any band with a strong female pressence in it. Not all members have to be female, it just has to sound like it could be :P (not including male vocals that are as high as a female's ie. rin toshite shigure)

There seems to be threads for lots of individual bands already so I thought this thread would be pretty useless.

But I also thought that since the individual threads don't really get much posts and there are just so many bands out there that I don't want to make threads for, I could just make this thread. but I don't really know what others would feel about it.

So in the end I just made a thread test the waters. If it doesn't get much attention or people don't like it, it'll probably just die anyways. (like all my other threads >_>)

*end prologue*

Anyways,

One band that I just got into today was Nakanomori Band.

I knew about this band for quite a while but for some reason never got into them. I just dled their new album, "Do the Rock" and I really like it. It's very poppy but they also really know how to rock.

I have to say though, most of the members aren't really that cute >_> but Ayako Nakanomori is really hot! I also fell in love with her voice. She's not the best singer, but her voice is just perfect for the music and just has this power and feeling to it.

The album is up for torrent on jpopsuki if anyone's interested.
(I just noticed there was already a thread for them  )

Another band that I absolutely adore, but I don't see mentioned much is Chatmonchy, I've liked pretty much everything they've released so far. Really cute stuff, but also pretty mellow.

I guess if there's any news that you'd like to share, or just anything about a particular girl band, you can post it here. Of course if the band has their own thread, you can just post it there.

Oh~ my sig! chatmonchy's debut album Miminari is definitely one of my favorites from this year. I really like them. Solid songs with catchy hooks. Hana no Yume is what got me into them. Really cute too. Probably my favorite girl band right now, along with Pinpan, who also really impressed me with their followup album Pxx&Axx. They're completely on different sides, though

Chatmonchy are great. The only flaw as I see it now is that they're in the need of another guitarist during live performances, since there are clearly two guitars playing in most of their studio songs. They're still great, though. Oh, and Eriko is teh cute~

I also like Orange Plankton. They're leaning more towards the pop side, but they have bits of rocky elements in them... with fucking adorable vocals. :P Too bad they disbanded earlier this year.

PARANMAUM would've made a great band, I wish they weren't temporary. :O

I love Girl Rock bands too! Hm... I really like Suitei Shoujo, which is a fairly obscure group. Their first album, 16~sixteen~, could be considered mainly pop, but their second album, 17's Heaven, is pretty rock-ish^^ If anyone is interested in listening to them, I have both albums that I can upload

J-rockers/punk girls, my delight. <3

I mostly listen to indie bands though, and especially to those under the Benten Label (http://sister.co.jp/english/index.html). My ultimate favorite band is 54 Nude Honeys (http://www.54nudehoneys.com/) (under a French/European indie label now), man they fukken rock. I can't get enough of them. I discovered them on TV. Yeah! Japanese indie bands in MY TV?! NO WAI!
They were touring in France, and they played live on TV to promote their album, their tour, and also because of the Printemps de Bourges, a big & famous musical event. They played live "Where is Love?", and I instantely fell in love with them. Even though i was shocked that i didn't know already such a great band with such hot chicks

Otherwise, my favs are: (not i order) Gito Gito Hustler, Shonen Knife, Super Egg Machine, Red Bacteria Vacuum, Concon Jump, Mummy The Peepshow, Strawberry Jam, Keihan Girl, The 5.6.7.8's, Danger Gang, Aina Ougi (singer), some Lolita No. 18 stuff (Masayo's voice really bugs me -- the cover of "Video killed the radio star" is teh shit though.), etc etc etc...

I only know like half of the bands you mentioned, and they're pretty awesome. I'll have to check out more of them.

I've heard of suitei shoujou. They sang the ending theme to Ju-on I think. I think they also sang a theme for One Piece. I never concidered them a band since they don't play any instruments, but some of their song aren't bad, haven't listened to them in years though. They were supposed to be like the Japanese TaTu.

Also if you'd like you can share some of the stuff you like, and I guess also make requests :P.

To start things off, I upped a Pop Chocolat album. They sorta have a similar style to chatmonchy, but I guess a little poppier and even more mellow . They seem to be pretty obscure.

I can't find their 2nd mini album though :/

Thanks for this.

Gito Gito Hustler is quite nice. I listened to one of their albums earlier today.

I upped a Whiteberry album. I think most people have at least heard of them.
They have a similar sound to Judy and Mary.

Anyways...

(http://img288.imageshack.us/img288/3701/mibandxf3.th.png) (http://img288.imageshack.us/my.php?image=mibandxf3.png)

I happened to stumble across them in one of my random Internet searches (yah, I get really bored XD LOL) I don't know too much about them, except wiki says they are a 3-member pop/punk girl band under the Columbia music label. They also have 6 singles, 1 full-length album, and 1 cover album of 80's hits

Members
MAIKA - vocals
AYA - keyboard
YURI - bass

Anyone who has more information or music of theirs, please share! I think they sound pretty cool^^

I've pretty much heard everything by them. They're more pop/rock. Kinda like ZONE. And they're good.
They were also on Avril Lavigne's tribute album that was released a few months ago with a few other artises such as misono, YUKI, Sonim, Aiko, etc.

Mi is nice, I like their sound. More towards the pop side, but its nice. I really liked their cover of Give Me Up.

I do like her tone, though. They must be pretty nice.

While we're on chatmonchy, here's their indie mini album, about half of it is unreleased so enjoy.

http://www.mediafire.com/?7nkimhtzrnf

They have become really popular in japan. They even have wota >_> esp. Ecchan, who many concider to be moe  but I think some of that is a play on a blog entry where it said on a pic that she was, it was explained on the chatmonchy japanese wiki page.

She is so cute though and I wouldn't disagree with the wota. :P But some of it is pretty creepy talk as if they were talking about idols and stuff. It's  kinda sad as I can see some backlash from non-wota fans :/

Oh and for the musicians, sheet music of their full-length was released
http://www.gakufu.ne.jp/detail/view.php?id=78333

I tried to get a couple of the songs by ear on guitar, but I can't get most of the chords >_>. (I'm way to used to playing power chords from punk bands lol)

Also for the other guitarists, I have an mp3 of the bass and drum track to hana no yume if anyone wants to try to play along to it.

There's this band called Mind of Asian. They play screamy hardcore thrash punk, sometimes touching on grindcore. Not the best stuff out there, but if you're in to that kind of stuff, it's a fun listen. :D

MARIA MARIA MARIA MARIA MARIA!

But also, some indie bands:

Tsushimamire
eX-Girl

Both of them tour the U.S. and (in eX-Girl's case, at least) Europe about once a year.  I've seen Tsushimamire twice and eX-Girl three times  --  they both put on great live shows in the kind of clubs where you can talk to members of the band after the show.

Noodles
Saw them the first time I saw Tsushimamire  --  they've recorded a lot of stuff (on Benten and other labels), and they're excellent.

Cherry Boom
From Taiwan  --  indie/pop with some good metallic guitar.  I hear everything from Tarcy Su to Garbage and the Noodles in their music.  Haven't seen 'em  --  I hope they play some U. S. gigs.

They went to my school for a little interview thing for my campus radio station. They're really cute. Didn't have a chance to talk to them though, but I guess I sorta met them... I really wouldn't know what to say anyways, I'm terrible at small talk.

Zwei is one of the best J-girl-rock bands ever, imho  They are made up of two girls, Megu (bass) and Ayumu (vocals), and they're just awesome  Ayumu has some of the best vocals in J-pop/rock, not to mention she's one of the hottest tomboys! :inlove: They have 2 full-length studio albums, Pretty Queen and Z, and 5 singles. Check them out if you haven't already!

I believe Kamiki Aya has her own thread, so there was no need to mention her in here. And of course she's rock, she has pretty much every rock element in her music. If you check out alot of the bands in this thread, most of them are pop/rock anyways. We're not here to discuss what rock is, if you have a band/artist you're free to share, as long as they can rock out :P

Here's a fairly new band in the vein of Nakanomori BAND.

EU PHORIA (ユーフォーリア) (http://www.visionfactory.jp/artist/euphoria/index.html)

I came across them when I was watching PopJam. They're under the same label as Nakanomori BAND. So far they've only released one single, which was a cover of Sharan Q's Single Bed. Active only this year, serving as the opening act at Nakanomori BAND shows, but they've been getting more exposure this month.

I don't think they're under the same label since Nakanomori Band is under Imperial Records and Eu Phoria under Avex/Vision Factory. Unless they're both the same.

Finally a reason for me to bump this thread...

Chatmonchy's new PV is out. You can get it off jpopsuki.

It's a pretty funny PV I think. The song itself is kinda boring. It doesn't have the pep of their more upbeat songs and doesn't really have the intensity of their heavier songs, but it's not too bad. It still sounds like Chatmonchy. They seemed to be going for a more anthem-ish sound, it has a nice sing-along chorus.

It's interesting how eriko's using a Les Paul instead of her usual Telecaster. I remember reading in 2ch how some of them wanted her to use one or something. I think someone mentioned that she used to play with a Les Paul before she used the Telecaster.
Title: Re: The Girl Rock Thread
Post by: boykun on April 08, 2007, 10:13:17 AM
Haha, they got their asses beat. Funny PV. The song isn't bad. It's kind of a middle ground. The chorus is definitely the high point, though. Nevertheless, I'll probably find myself listening to it a lot when it comes out.

Seems like new gear this time. Akko isn't using her usual Jazz Bass either. Interesting to see Eriko play a Les Paul. Kind of weird actually, especially since she plays a Tele.

lol Chatmonchy is awesome. You're the first person I've met who doesn't like them atleast a little XD

Anyways here's Ni-Hao (http://www.ni-hao2180.com/)(there's a link to their site here in case you didn't notice)

Pretty interesting Pop Punk band. Their sound goes from pop, surf rock, punk, to just making noise lol They're really not all that great, but that's probably one of the things that appeals to me XD They're just fun to watch.

The interesting thing about them is that they have two bassists and no guitars.

They're also quite cute.

The person who upped this has some PV's if you're interested.

I have their album somewhere, but apparently not ripped and I'm not finding the CD at a glance.  They had a couple mini-albums out in Japan, and then their first full length album was released in the US (no JP release for it that I'm aware of)  http://www.tzadik.com/index.php?catalog=7259
Title: Re: The Girl Rock Thread
Post by: StreakInTheSky on April 10, 2007, 10:56:36 PM
wow a US release. Is that just the tracks on the Japanese mini-albums put on one CD? lol
Title: Re: The Girl Rock Thread
Post by: soveryshiny on April 11, 2007, 12:16:41 AM
Nope, no overlap at all between the 2 mini-albums and the US album.  Completely new material for it.  John Zorn's Tzadik label released, not the first time they've done that with a Japanese artist.

They also had another album in JP last August, where instead of their usual 2 bass + drums it was drums+sampler+keyboards.  With their drummer playing the keyboards, so none of them were on their usual instruments, apparently.  Don't have that one though.

cool. I hate it when people release albums with most of the songs already releasedm. Unless of course they're remixes or alot different from the original recording.

Anyways, another interesting band

mass of the fermenting dregs (http://www.sound.jp/motfd/)

I'd probably classify them as Post-Hardcore, sorta emo-ish. I love their sound.

they have some songs on their mypace http://www.myspace.com/motfd  they have an audioleaf profile too but it has less songs.

and here's the live they posted on their site

lol "all female grindcore"

not exactly grindcore... Where are the stupid insane time signatures? and not exactly all that exciting too me. Every song sounds almost identical, well from what they have on their myspace. That evacuation song they play in the video sounds pretty good.

The vocalist is pretty fucking awesome. She has a nice range. Her voice can not only get higher than mine but  it can also go deeper than mine XD. She's also hot as all hell. Any band with a girl that can scream like that and look like this

(http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/516/428515212lar7.th.jpg) (http://img185.imageshack.us/my.php?image=428515212lar7.jpg)

is ok by me though :P

Mind sharing some of those songs you have? ;)

Anyone in the Maryland area next month, seems they're playing a show in Baltimore next month.

Thanks!

No problem, I love introducing new bands to people(but I hate most mindless promotion from street teams and such >_>). It's funny though, cause when a band starts getting more popular, it kinda turns me off from them...

Post by: john_hung on May 01, 2007, 07:09:20 PM
not exactly grindcore...

how do you figure? atm i've only heard the songs on their myspace but all 3 of those are full-on grindcore in the japanese style (the japanese grind always had it's own feel to it which imo made it distinct from other grind bands)...i'm very impressed by these ladies  >:D

Title: Re: The Girl Rock Thread
Post by: StreakInTheSky on May 01, 2007, 10:24:28 PM
After listening to more of their songs, I guess they are a grindcore band, but alot of their songs I think are more thrash than grind. Especially their older songs(I think they were older). It almost sounded like I was listening to a hardcore thrash punk band.

They have a cool sorta dark sound to them, can't really explain it.

Pretty cool. They have that guitar pop feel like chatmonchy and pop chocolat but the atmosphere is different. pop chocolat's bassist left the band by the way, too bad.

Anyway, here's "Bee" that I grabbed off their audioleaf a while ago. Seems like they took down the downloads.

the green amp on the right corner is a "Matchless", one of the many 'boutique' amp makers (=super $$$)  Super good tone, at least ones that i heard, all high quality all tube guitar amp...

from skimming through some of what I can actually read, they only recorded one new song called "beaazu" and re-recorded i f a surfer(which is mostly what's in the video). But I barely read any of it so there might be more. Maybe they just don't want to spoil the fans  :/

They're an all girl pop-punk band with dual vocals. Sorta sounds like PinPan with a punch  Maybe like the poppier side of Maximum the Hormone.

Recommended if you like late 90's pop punk bands like early Blink-182 and New Found Glory and lots of bands off of Drive Thru Records' early catalog  But with punchier bass lines and some rapping.

Pretty cool song. I hope they'll be the last guest for the Japan Expo in Paris. They came last year, so why not again.

edit: the overal style and the vocals of the main vocalist remind me of Yui. Which is a good thing. I like how they have choreography while playing their instruments  :). I hope they'll have an album + live dvd soon...

I'm surprised no one has mentioned these girls yet. They make straightforward rock that's nothing particularly special, but I think they're great at it. Very solid for an all girl band. Plus some of they're pretty cute...and that's always a plus.   :P

I'm sure you all can easily find their music through google. I posted their PV for "Navy Star" below.

LAZYgunsBRISKY

Quote
LAZYgunsBRISKY is an all-girl hard rock quartet from Tokyo.  Comprising members Lucy (vocals), izumi (guitar), azu (bass, vocals), and Moe (drums)., the band draws influence from 60s - 80s rock and roll, replete with fat guitars and sludgy bass.  Their current stuff could be described as an updated take on the likes of Guns N' Roses and Aerosmith, while some of the older songs possess the brutish simplicity of The Stooges.  The band formed in September 2006, and within five months they had released their first demo CD.  April 2008 saw the release of their debut album, quixotic, on the indie imprint July Records.  They followed the release with a tour of Japan, quickly building up a strong following on the club circuit.  Capitalizing on their momentum, LAZYgunsBRISKY released the mini-album Catching from on major label Babestar, a sub label of Victor, again followed by a tour.  The record was produced by Kenichi Asai, former leader of the legendary  Blankey Jet City, who also co-wrote the track "Pretending" with the band.  In July 2009, the band released their second mini-album, 26 Times, on the associated flyingstar records.  Again produced by Asai, the record included the track "Navy Star", which was used as the ending theme on the Tokyo Television program The God Tongue.  Soon after release, the band embarked on a whirlwind 20+ date tour spanning all of Japan.

ANARCHY STONE

Pretty decent all-female pop-rock trio. They released their debut major album earlier this year,
which was also their first full length. From what I can tell, their indie stuff was slightly edgier,
but still very much in line with their major material.

not really rock, but more poprock...

A few days before the actual release of the PV of noanowa's newest single, I give to you a PV-rip of グラデーション (gradation), their upcoming single that'll be released on June 2 if I recall correctly ..

As one80 already knows, I really love them, my favourite all-female band .o.

Though it's a little bit too fine-tuned since they went major. Not that it really went downhill, but I liked that rough edge the had with (especially) their first release... But still, pre-ordered their upcoming release, want to keep their disco complete :P

But they still beat the shit out of SCANDAL and StereoPony. Still curious on how GuruGuru is evolving though. Loved their latest release, and still waiting for more by them...
