As daigong suggested (from my post in "post whoring thread"), I made this world cup thread!
:D

post anything you want to say about the upcoming world cup, the news, your favour teams, players, formation, rumours, anything you like!!!
AS LONG AS IT IS WORLD CUP RELATED!!!

P.S. Do I get a prize daigong???

Yep. You get "thumbsup"

I like Brazil again. Ronaldhino is unstoppable and his Barcelona win (?) in the FA Cup (?) ...anyways, it'll be good to get drunk all over again in the summer.

hmm.. i think the brazillian squad of this campaign is one of the strongest i've seen in a while..

Goalkeepers: Dida (AC Milan), Julio Cesar (Inter Milan), Rogerio Ceni (Sao Paulo)

Defenders: Cafu (AC Milan), Cicinho (Real Madrid), Lucio (Bayern Munich), Juan (Bayer Leverkusen), Roberto Carlos (Real Madrid), Gilberto (Hertha Berlin), Cris (Olympique Lyon), Luisao (Benfica)

Midfielders: Edmilson (Barcelona), Juninho Pernambucano (Olympique Lyon), Emerson (Juventus), Ze Roberto (Bayern Munich), Gilberto Silva (Arsenal), Kaka (AC Milan), Ricardinho (Corinthians)

Forwards: Ronaldo (Real Madrid), Robinho (Real Madrid), Ronaldinho (Barcelona), Adriano (Inter Milan), Fred (Olympique Lyon)

ronaldo doesn't look like he's as hungry or passionate about football this time going into the world cup. he probably won't even be in the starting lineup.

Sure, isn't TSN + Sportsnet doing it? When in doubt, go to E&C

http://soccer.sportsnet.tsn.ca/schedule_results/

According to that page, every game will be carried either by Sportsnet or TSN with the final game being broadcast on CTV.  Either way, that's a good thing, as long as the game is being shown, it doesn't matter which network it's on.

My prediction is Holland is going to take it.  Just cause they've always seemed like underachievers and may be due for a breakout tournament.  My underdog pick is Ukraine.

European Cup.

Personally, looking forward to seeing Japan, Holland, Brazil and the US in action. The US did well in their last outing, I want to see how far they can go this time. Holland missed the last one, so we'll see how it goes.

Free-to-air doesn't have group matches though. This fucking blows.

I'm planning on watching every game this time around, if I can just fit them into my super-busy schedule. :D In 2002, I missed like 1 and a half games. :w00t:

I'll be "rooting" for four teams: Czech, Netherlands, Japan and South Korea, although I'm just as interested in seeing some of the new countries play, from Africa for example. I just wanna see quality football and variety in gameplay.

My "somewhat realistic" out-of-the-blue bet for the winner of the cup is Czech Republic.

England was losing 1-2 and the match was already in stoppage time, so this was their last chance to score. They needed the goal to qualify for the 2002 World Cup. It's a classic Beckham free kick :)

yeah, chimbonda had became quite a player over the past year and one of the reasons why Wigan did so well in the premiership (when everyone thought they were going straight back down).

I don't think much of the US team actually, McBride is past his use by date and is a very average striker at his peak campare to other world-class strikers. Johnson has potential but is still very raw. They have a very decent left winger in Beasley (that's forced to play out of position on the right on the games that's I've watched) and Donovan is grossly over-rated by the US media, he's elusive and technically sound, but that's about it, there's good reasons why he never made it in his stints in Europe. Though the seemingly ageless Keller is still quite okay in goal. And their FIFA ranking pretty much pisses off everyone who knows and watches Football. US would be extremely lucky just to get through the group stages.

teams i'm keeping a eye on this year...
-south korea: had a great showing in 2002 and i'm curious to see how they'll do this cup
-ivory coast: i've always had a thing for african teams and since nigeria didn't qualify this cup i'm keeping my eye on them
-tunisia: another team that shocked everyone in 2002, gotta see what they'll do

i just hope this cup is as good if not better than the one in 2002, just a damn shame i can't be in germany to see them live like i got to then. luckily espn and abc are covering all the matches, just hope they'll be friendly to my work schedule.

Germany's game was so good to watch. High scoring with two sensational goals. What a way to start the tournament! I laughed at the commentary when the first goal was scored. "That's possibly the best goal of the tournament". Well, it was the ONLY goal of the tournament so far!

T&T was fucking win. It was almost like watching Total Football all over again. What, we lost the ball? Why, we'll just run back and defend against the Swedes!

Argentina 2 - 1 Ivory Coast

Best of today's matches, for sure. Ivory Coast played like vets, even though its the first time. They took the game to the argentinians for sure. That last minute goal by Drogba was pretty awesome too. I was surprised by how much they could defend and attack.

I'm awaiting IC's match against Holland now. Should be a treat.

ARG - CIV was a good game.

Both teams put on a good fight, I wasn't expecting Ivory Coast to do as well as they did at all. Hell, I was really rooting for them to score that second goal and make it a tie during those last 10 minutes. The Netherlands shouldn't underestimate them.

but guys ... ivory coast was good until half of the fist time ... then ivory coast  just run like hell and nothing more .

i have to say that argentina look so slow against ic , they look almost static

and hell they STOLE a gol to argentina ... yes it's true ..
Title: The 2006 World Cup Thread!!!
Post by: zaius on June 11, 2006, 03:29:18 AM
ivory coast is the african sleeper this year like nigeria was back in 94. they played solid against argentina and the only thing i saw that they should've done better was press on their defense more, especially after drogba's goal. it'll be really interesting to see how the match with holland will turn out but i'm routing for the elephants~

as for england's debut it wasn't good at all. for a team that was one of the favorites pulling out a one - nil win on an own goal just wasn't a good start but they got the win and those 3 points are all that matters right now.

and i gotta give cred to the t&t goalkeeper for doing a damn good job. i think everyone expected the swedes to run away with that match but what a suprise.
Title: The 2006 World Cup Thread!!!
Post by: aimaime on June 11, 2006, 03:47:44 AM
england is a definite favourite for me.. IF and only if gerrard + lampard could play as well as they play for their clubs. otherwise they depend too much on someone like rooney to do his magic.. or becks' setpieces for the goals..

argentina was really impressive. +all-star subs..

i've a feeling holland won't qualify..

Post by: maliciel on June 11, 2006, 08:07:39 AM
Brazil, for sure. Unsurpassed still, in my book.

Yeah, Brazil's playing style is different from the europeans'. Europe teams tend to play long ball, while teams from the americas and africa play a short passing game. It can get boring with long ball sometimes, but sometimes you can get teams that can play both ways. That's when a match gets totally awesome. :D

ronaldinho looked pretty cute as a little kid. he also played like he does now back when he was a kid which was crazy.

Assuming Brazil make it to the top of the group (cause you know, they're Brazil), then Australia, Croatia and Japan have got their work cut out for them in aiming to reach 2nd place.  Either Australia or Japan can take the early advantage by winning today, which makes it sound like an exciting match to watch.

Go Japan!

I don't like Australia's team (even though I live here)
Although I haven't watched very much soccer before, I saw the Australia Vs. Netherlands friendly game and Australia just didn't look like they were in control of the game. If it wasn't for Australia's goalie who I thought was pretty good, things would have been different.

Ooooh...  you're an Aussie too, ebc?  (Well, you live in Oz which might be different of course!)  I knew Kei was here, but wasn't sure 'bout anyone else...

I, too, kinda have sympathies for Japan, despite being a Brit-born Anglo Aussie;  I admit that I'm not a huge follower of soccer-football (for non-Aussies:  we Aussies have our own football, hence the 'Soccer'-oos !!)...  And when I stopped watching (work early tomorrow) Japan was ahead by 1 goal...  So, yeah, ok ebc:

Go Japan!!

(Maybe we get Rika and her mates to come on and do their Rakuten Eagles theme, just for fun?)

Well there went Japan's chances to advance. No way in hell are they gonna beat Brazil and chances against Croatia are quite slim. They had to win this game, but alas.

And thanks to everyone who recommended live streams and sites. Finally, after a good hour of work and testing like 8 different programs, TV ANTS (http://www.tvants.com/) did the trick and allowed me access to the Chinese CCTV5 sports channel. :yay:

A Little blocky but completely watchable. Also had to avoid the chat since the stream had a 3 minute delay or so.

the aussie probably thinks they're playing rugby today... what's w/ all those bumping and pushing the jap really... very disappointed in the result... thought the jap would win, but... sigh... i guess they just got tired at the end... but if they're really tired... at least they should stay back and try to watch out for the net instead of moving forward... and now, the chances of the jap qualifying are... sigh... anyways, i'll still support japan... and i hope brazil will kick australia's butt well later...

the japanese goalie was catching flyes instead of catching the ball

my comment about tomorrow matches:

brazil - croatia

brazil ... hell they are 11 like everyone else .. why the hell everyone call of they like they were god or something like that ...
if you press enough to brazil  and thy to keep the ball ... they can't do nothing...
and croatia will do that ... GO CROATIA!

Korea-Togo : hmmm korea 3 togo 0 :D

france -switzerland : france do some many good things ... like peugeot 504 , peugeot 205 maxi s 16 ... their wine ( ours ir better:D ) they have good porno ... but in soccer ... hmmm they aren't too good ( MY PERSONAL OPINION) ... this match will be a draw ...

i woke up late for the japan-aussies game. by that time it was 1-0 japan into 63 minutes of play. there was this moment where i said that this WC lacked scoring wit all these 1-0 wins. about 10 minutes later japanese's keeper made a stupid mistake to led in the tying goal. the japanese then seemed like they were either tired, or their defence just sucked big time.

about the usa-czech game, i was laughing at the US basically for their performance. cant believe they are ranked 5th in the world.

i rushed home from work to watch the replay of the brz-cro game. it wasnt too good of a game for brazil. they played great during the first half. but the 2nd half, they were pressured heavily by the croatians. i really expect a much better performance the rest of the tourney.

watching the brazilians play is pretty amazing. their ball handling and short distance passing are almost flawless. ronaldinho at times shook off two defenders. Kaka's goal was great. he didnt need to put in too much power, but he was able to use the angle+spin to beat the keeper.

Brazil was quite impressive despite the lack of goals. However, Croatia's performance convinced me that Australia and especially Japan are not gonna make it to the next round.

France was disappointing in their game against Switzerland. And someone get rid of Barthez already, that guy annoys me.

Oh gee, what an exciting World Cup day today:

Spain vs Ukraine
Tunisia vs Saudi-Arabia

yay for england finally putting an attacking formation on the pitch. T&T put everyone behind the ball and packed the midfield, and until lennon and downing came on the pitch, england couldn't get any width. maybe they shold play beckham at right back for the rest of the tournament! :P

a shame that paraguay couldn't hold on for the draw - if they had, then england would have been confirmed as group winners. ah well - sweden have loooked very unimpressive in their opening two games.

The referee of Holland's match can go to hell. At first I thought he was biased towards Holland, but turns out he's just stupid. Gosh he ruined the otherwise best match of the tournament so far.

But yeah, group C played the greatest matches. Had the listless England been grouped with Argentina they'll have no chance of advancing at all!

Czech is crippled and the goalie seemed to be their sole defence. Their next match against Italy will be difficult with all the good offensive players gone. Koller and Baros injured, and now Lokvenc got a second successive yellow card and misses the next game.

Most fucking disappointing game ever. Don't get me wrong, it was a good game, but not if you're somewhat neutral and just happen to have a penchant for the Czech team. Good god, they played like shit. And fucking Ujfalusi got himself red carded, and a few guys picked up yellows. No Koller, no Baros, no good players, Czech is on their way out.

brazil still not playing their A game. they were lucky today wit all those chances they gave to Australia. if brazil plays like that, they can easily lose to the great teams in the knockout round.however their attack were very dangerous in the 2nd half.

i am hoping Aussies will advance along wit brazil.

I could almost hear Rika cursing when South Korea scored and again when Zidane got a yellow card
Anyways overall the game was a snoozefest

Oh shit, a draw!

Man, first half was pretty dull after Henry's goal. It didn't get interesting until second half when Korea really got going and actually a few shots on goal. I'm pretty happy for them, they've got the most points in their group so far.

Too bad Zidane's missing the game against Togo.

That was Zidane's last game, man!

Buh bye France :D

Well ok, seriously, anything can still happen. France still isn't very impressive, although they controlled most of the game. There's still something fundamentally wrong (and Barthez is still a Blockhead).

And Korea now has a great chance to make it to the next round!

Seriously?

even though I'm happy that Brazil is going to the next ones, still, it doesn't look like their old cups (remember 2002?) AT ALL. it sucks. it sucks big time. i'm really disappointed at the start, I hope they'll get better after the game against Japan.

AND SOMEONE, PLEASE, TAKE RONALDO OUT OF THE DAMNED TEAM! the guy can't even run anymore because of how much he got lazy and ate those two past months he didn't play in any team!

anyway. imo, Brazil's games are sucking in this cup, including today's. it would be so much better if the adversary team stopped going in Ronaldinho's way so he could score something, but they DO know what he's capable of, so, won't happen.

Parreira already made it clear he won't get Ronaldo out of the team in the next games, what a nightmare.

i think it is ok to criticize ronaldo in the first game, but he played well vs australia. i know he still aint up to his A game, but then he was quite active. when 3 defenders are on him every time he touched the ball, its really differcult to do anything. At least he setup the adraino goal. i feel bad for him. i hope he remains in the lineup and prove ppl wrong.

the thing is robinho and fred can play way better than him at the moment. see how much the tempo of the team changes everytime ronaldo goes out. (but it makes good tactics though, making the opposition really tired and then throwing in robinho for them to handle :P)..

spain again tomorrow. go torres!!

robinho has some powerful shots. i do agree at the moment if he was to play in place of ronaldo, the team will be more dominant. however i still want ronaldo to play up to expectation.

First two matches of the Last 16 are:

Germany v Sweden
England v Ecuador

England looked very shaky yesterday. Their defence didn't seem to have a clue when it came to opposing setpieces. Add to that the fact that their star striker, Michael Owen was injured in the first 5 mins of the match, I seriously don't see England advancing beyond the Quarter Finals, when it's possible that they could play Argentina, but then, I never considered England as favourites for the cup anyway.

Actually the Croatia v Australia match was more entertaining than Brazil v Japan, I thought. Croatia were leading in the opening minutes, then the Aussies came back. Croatia led again then Australia gave everything they had to equalise. Both teams reduced to 10 men, and of course there was the controversial matter of Simunic being booked twice, but the referee had forgot the player was booked once before and they were still playing for seven or so minutes until the ref displayed Simunic a third yellow card that he was sent off. Croatia came close to scoring during that period also, which would be, as the commentators put it, 'the most controversial moment in football history'. Somehow I doubt that referree will be overseeing the final.

In a way, Australia being through to the next round is a big win for football. Aussie is going wild over a game they usually pay absolutely no attention to (except for foreigners ofcourse), they usually worry about the cricket, AFL, NRL, Rugby etc. Now, football is dominating Australian TV.
Ofcourse I really feel bad that japan didn't make a show, but in the end, some of the feel good television is kind of rubbing of on me. Maybe it's not so bad that Aussie are through...

I am glad Australia won. I didn't like some of the players in Croatia's squad. For a start off there was one guy who was waving his arms in the penalty box so much I thought he was playing volleyball. And then you get players who literally pushed the ref over a decision made against them! I was like, 'dude, seriously, do you want to be working at a McDonald's for the remainder of your life?'

feels bad for the japanese's goal keeper. those brazilians were firing shots after shots at him. i was very surprised they got the first goal. but then brazil was too crazy wit their ball handling.

i must feel good for ronaldo after scoring twice in the match. the critics can shut up now!

is it me or does it seems like brazil's goals are scored so effortless. the 2nd goal from ronaldo was just amazin. he basically stood just outside the box and took the angle and just shot it in.

and i'm barracking for togo tonight: if france don't win, they're going home - and the french team has played so poorly (and their manager has wimped out of the tough decisions) they don't deserve to make it to the next round.

But korea is really good their spirit and concentration
Korean is really cheated by the referee in the last match vs swiss. i watch it last night.
The linesman has raised the flag means offside. but the referee don't see it. So there is the second goal from swiss by alexander frei

I do hope you're being sarcastic, as there is no way you could consider that to be a good call.  First of all, it was a deflection off of a Korean player, not a korean player losing possession so Frei WAS offsides.  Second, both sides stopped playing (the swiss only for an instant) when they saw the flag raised, even Frei.  You can't call a goal in this instance because a referee interfered with play.  It's the same as letting play continue when a fan runs onto the field.  It's as they say, Players win games, Coaches lose games, and Refs ruin games.  Truly one of the biggest blunders of the cup.

I think that red card Deco got was..not wrong. I remember it came when a NED guy went on a run, right after Ricardo was injured. They were supposed to pass it back (you know, sportsmanship and all that), but they didn't and he was totally open. Deco tackled from behind, caught him, he went down, straight yellow.

Now what was sin is the fact that Figo didn't get a red card for headbutting. That was a straight red, but the ref somehow gave him a yellow instead. You could tell the players just wanted to go at each other, during the last few. What was funny was when they showed van Bronkhorst and Deco having a chat during the game..

Watching England play is like getting slapped about the head with a rolled-up newspaper for 90 minutes.

And what the hell was up with the referee in the Portugal v Holland game? Both teams down to nine men in a match that featured 16 yellow cards and 4 red. I think the only reason the match got so out of hand was because the referee was provoking it by giving yellow cards over any little thing. Stupid. Speaking of, what was Van Basten thinking by not putting his star striker, Ruud, on yesterday? I understand him saying he's not performing as he should, but come on, you're 1-0 down with all the possibility of not advancing to the next stage, I would have let differences aside and bring on all of the attacking power you need.

Sure maybe the penalty wasn't fair, but was Neill (aussie defender) thinking? Never give the ref a chance to make a mistake, and he should have stayed on his feet. The socceroos had a man advantage, and so much possesion, but didn't do anything. The attack was too one dimensional, and they seem not to have any player beaters as well. With that much possesion in the attacking half, they should have done better, but good defending Italy and judging by who you play in quarters, so you in the semis

Swiss + Ukraine was helluva painful to end like that too. That commentator said like first time it ended like this in the Round of 16?

Imo the call for penalty kick was as controversial as the red card for Materazzi at the start of 2nd half. Sure people can argue how Aussies got robbed, but Italy deserved the win. The socceroos pretty much had possession for the entire 2nd half, and they couldn't do jackshit. Come on, not that Azzurri defense line was that unbeatable to start with. With the opposite team one man down, I don't get why the kangaroos didn't take advantage of their height and make high passes to create chaos inside the box. Oh well. I'm so glad Italy won though. :D

the swiss players sure do suck at penalty shots. maybe they are just dead tired, but they just gotta have more power and angle to their shots. a bad way to exit WC when they have been playing pretty good in the first round.

on the other hand, the aussies really are not a good team compare to italy. when they were up a man, they had few chances to score, but they just didnt have the talent to put balls through the net. i still say that penalty shot should have never been called. the ref shouldve called the foul just before that incident happened. one thing i also noticed was that italy plays really good defence.

I don't care about the penalty kick for Italy. At least, i win the bet. Hahaha....
Because i think Italy will win the world cup. So until before the penalty. i'm still sure italy will win no matter through penalty or goal in the extra time.

Peace, Forza ITALIA.....

Thierry Henry yesterday called on Fifa, the world game's governing body, to order a greater punishment of Spain's national coach Luis Aragonés after his racist comments directed at the Arsenal striker.

Aragonés was fined 3,000 euros (£2,060) by the Spanish football federation earlier this week, a sum that Henry calls "absolutely ridiculous" after the game's anti-racist movment Kick It Out labelled "a tokenistic gesture".

Henry, who was called "a black shit" by Aragonés at a Spanish training session in October, told the Sun: "It's up to Fifa to step in - they are the only ones who can do something . . . they should look at this fine and make it a proper one. They must also tell the Spanish FA to get real.

so sad my aussies lost :( , but i'm with Redturtle: the penalty decision was on par with the red card to Materazzi, so at least the ref was consistent.

if i was going to complain about the penalty i'd have to complain about the red card as well - and the aussies couldn't score even tho they were playing against 10. the better team won, but at least we didnt get slaughtered.

the swiss-ukraine match was so tedious: shame the aussies lost, cos both teams were shite, and the aussies could have taken them both. italy now have what amounts to a free pass into the semi finals.

cmon ghana! cmon spain! my anti-brasil (and anti-france) vibe is cos i want the teams full of old and/or fat players to lose, and the managers who picked youthful, ambitious teams to be rewarded. altho memo to sven: it's not enough just to pick theo walcott in the squad: he's gotta get some game time, too.

Stop rooting for stupid teams Rika! See what you did... :(

Bah. There go the Spaniards, I had some hope for their young and quite impressive team, but no, the arrogant, uninspired (until now at least) and boring Frenchies decided to start playing a little. But well, Spain failed to impress today, they were sub-par.

I swear I wanted to beat Henry with a stick every time he pulled his fucking melodramatic "Whaaat? Who me in offside? Noo..." shit.

And Barthez is STILL a bozo.

Well, at least they'll go the fuck down in flames against Brazil.

ghana was playin well in the first half. i guess they arent good enough to finish those chances they had. brazil was just too good down the stretch. their short distance passing was awsome. it couldve easily been 6-0. i felt bad for ronaldinho at the end when cafu chose to shoot rather than pass to him for a open net. its also the first time i see him get mad. i must say ghana's defence was weak. their offside trap cost them 2 goals.

now i hope brazil gets their revenge on france for what happened in 98. it would be nice for ronaldo to get 1-2 goals.

Damn, I was hoping for Argentina to win today. But that's what you get when you decide to try and just maintain possession throughout the 2nd half, it happened to Iran when they played Mexico, it happened to Japan when they played Australia. Fair play to Germany for showing more creativity in the 2nd half. I would expect a Germany v Italy semi-final then, which should be a good game. Would love to know what the cause of the fight was, certainly got Heize wound up.

Argentina didn't deserve a loss, especially not a loss like that. The subs were understandable, I suppose. Riquelme isn't needed if you don't want to score any more goals and just wanna focus on keeping possession. Thought the Cruz-over-Messi move was somewhat dodgy. I did think the sub keeper was weak, in the shootout. Still a bummer the way they lost. Grats to Germany, I suppose. ._.

Italy played a good game against Ukraine. No chance, 3 behind the net, nice first goal.

editus maximus : I do question that one ballack dive decision though. That should've been a yellow, it was pretty obvious.

I think it's better for the tournament as a whole to have the world favourites out now. Now we're guaranteed a different winner than predictable Brazil. As expected, the English media have found two scapegoats responsible for England's loss yesterday, Sven and C.Ronaldo. Sven for, well, being Sven and C.Ronaldo as responsible for sending Rooney into a rampage. HELLO?! Lest we forget Rooney's paper thin temper. I would imagine putting on different color socks in the morning would make Rooney into a tyrant. And David Beckham announced he's no longer the England captain. Well, he certainly tried, but Beckham does sum up the England team - hyped up, all style with no substance.

They were average at best. I think both Brazil and England were way too over-hyped before the tournament. And yes the teams certainly looked good on paper. I mean for England you've got a defense of Terry, Ferdinand and Neville, a midfield consisting of Beckham, Lampard, Gerrard and attacking roles in Rooney and Owen. World class players, but it all means nothing if you haven't got the teamwork down. Sven's been implementing risky formations during the tournament and look where it's got them. There's also the heavy dependency on Rooney which I don't like. Rooney's not an all out forward, so why was Sven placing him up there by himself at the deep end of the pitch, solely depending on long balls from his team-mates? It's an idiotic decision to place your goal scoring chances on a player who's not an all-out striker and only recovered from a major injury whilst the tournament was running! All of the England players play much, much better for their respective club teams.

yeah, im really pissed about the results of yesterday's matches... esp since i had brazil winning overall, how the fuck do they lose to france, who barely made it out of group??

ive got italy over france, germany over portugal; germany taking the cup, now.

though with brazil and england gone, i almost dont want to watch the last of the matches...

The English media and players love to find scapegoats other than themselves to blame on for their lousy performances. The last time I checked, they blamed on dryness of pitches in German stadiums for their bad play. XDD

Isn't Portugal playing France, and Germany playing Italy.
In that case most likely France will win over Portugal if they play as well as the last game against Brazil.
Hard to decide whether Germany or Italy will be in because they are both good teams.

But I predict the final will be Germany vs France.

works for me too...quarterfinals started with defeat of my favorites Argentina (how could that bloody coach substitute Riquelme?!), but with elimination of England and Brazil, it's all fine...though, I'm lost with no team to cheer for, so let's say france and germany are lesser of four evils :D...anyway, it would be either:
          1st title for Portugal
          2nd title for France
3rd title for Italy (edited: it would be 4th actually, so this post is useless :D)
or 4th one for Germany (somehow interesting >.>)

Japan's most successful soccer star Nakata Hidetoshi (29) shocked the country with the announcement of his retirement yesterday. He issued a statement on his official website, nakata.net, saying "About six months ago, I decided to end my ten-year career in professional football, making the World Cup in Germany my final event before retirement. There was no one particular event that triggered this. And there is no single reason behind my decision." This was no doubt an effort to dispel speculation that he was devastated by Japan's lackluster performance at the World Cup. He added, "But what I can say now is that I felt that it was time for me to graduate from the journey of professional football, and set out on a new journey." The media are already speculating on the chances of a career in the media. Nakata currently has sponsorship contracts with five major companies and is a regular in TV commercials. He is in the same class as Major League baseball stars Ichiro and Matsui Hideki, making ¥50-100 million a year for commercials. While sports stars usually lose commercial value when they retire, Nakata's World Cup performance and analysis and the timing of his retirement are thought to have sponsors and media outlets coveting him even more.

he's past his best as a footballer - maybe ihe just couldn't be arsed going on any more? he was playing with Bolton in the English Premier Lge last season (and the season before that, i think) and altho he played well, he was playing as a water-carrier, not as a playmaker, and he wasn't starting every game, either.

he was one of the few Japanese players to come out of the World Cup with his reputation intact, but maybe he just didn't feel like being a journeyman player on a journeyman football team any more?

The first goal was what really did it.. Germany had to get a lot more aggressive to get a tying goal or they would lose anyway. It's the equivalent of pulling the goalie in hockey.

ya, you have to... It doesn't matter if you lose by 1 or you lose by 2, you still lose. They had to try to score a goal even if it meant leaving people in 1 on 1 coverage on your side of the field, which is what happened.

You could sorta see that Italy had the game won when they came out in overtime as the much more aggressive team. Germany was lucky those two shots went off the crossbar/post in the beginning of the first overtime... they couldn't get lucky forever.

i was watching last night with some germans, so obviously i was upset they lost, but the better team really did win last night.

unfortunately, it was nights like last night that explain why italian football is so disliked outside of italy: they can play some beautiful, attacking football when they choose - but usually they choose to play catenaccio, and to dive/ elbow/ timewaste/ cheat. if only they played like last night all the time!

now, hopefully, the italians will play like they did against germany, and as we always knew they could... they'd be deserving winners if they did.but i don't really mind who wins now - it won't be fucking portugal, and that's all that matters.

and yes, as Ericks posted (http://forum.jphip.com/showpost.php?p=118594&postcount=397): go vote for Luis Valencia of Ecuador to stop the cheat winning an award. forward the link to all yr firends!

^ Well the news is sure to make England fans sleep a little better at night, although, if I was one, I'd spend more energy on criticising the England management for not creating an effective team out of a supposed "golden generation" rather than laying the blame game on a sole player of an opposing team. But hey, you know, that's just me. If it were up to me, I would have made Theo Walcott the best young player.

And I don't understand how Henry is not also under accusation. He's also purposefully dived, and at least, when it comes to Ronaldo, there is some form of contact made. Henry's clutching at his face in the game against Brazil, was disgusting. The fact that Henry wasn't booked, and France scored from that set piece only makes it worse.

Italy's full of diving bastards too, but I hope they win.

Are you talking about C. Ronaldo or someone from Italy? If you're talking about C. Ronaldo then maybe you should look at Portugal's Olympic diving team...

I don't think the diving itself it's the problem. FIFA's ancient rules are. They should allow a little more physical playing or they could have a special video judge who can check these in seconds.

It was 4 to be exact, but that's not important. The main issue about Portugal was that some players kept diving to try and get French players yellow (or even red) carded. It wasn't just as simple as getting a free kick or PK. That's playing fucking dirty since defenders won't be as aggressive if they already have a yellow card, and ones with a yellow already will miss the final match if they receive another one.

But anyways.... Portugal sucked against France. They had so many chances to score and win but they just couldn't finish. And C. Ronaldo's cockiness is making him look like an idiot...

Quote
"I was pleased about being booed. Maybe France fans were upset to see a dangerous player. I'm not worried."

"Everyone who saw the match could see that the referee wasn't fair.

"He should have shown yellow cards but he did not because Portugal is a small country. We just have to carry on working and then we will be a big country."
[/b]

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/world_cup_2006/teams/portugal/5153086.stm
He got booed because of the England match, it had nothing to do with France. The referee was fair and lenient with giving out cards. He should've given yellow cards to all the divers but he just let the match play on.

I sound like I hate him but I used to be a fan of C. Ronaldo when he first joined Man. Utd :). Not a fan anymore though since he's not much of a team player. The team plays worse with him on the field since he wants to be the hero and do everything.

C. Ronaldo sucks crap as a soccer player. Not because of his skill but his atitude towards a match! WTF is his problem? Just because he (or the team) losing 1-0 and they had to start diving?

I really wish C. Ronaldo is out of Man. Utd. I like Man. Utd alot, but not C. Ronaldo. In fact there are few other players who can take over C. Ronaldo's position in Man. Utd (ex. Park Ji Sung).

So Sir. Ferguson, do us a favour and kick C. Ronaldo out while keeping Rooney!

Oh... and they should get Éric Daniel Pierre Cantona to say "Joga Bonito" to C. Ronaldo. Or did C. Ronaldo watched the Nike commercial?

Deco (Portugal)

Steven Taylor ... this was hilarious :P
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9AUayEJEeg

Lehmann (Germany)

The finals is tonight and I'm hoping Italy will win (minus the diving). France beat Italy to win Euro 2000 but the refs were horrible in that game. Hopefully we can finally watch a fair match with no diving and no bad referees :p

ummm...... I don't really know, but if Henry can score 3 goals against Italy, then he will get the Golden Shoe award, which will be nice and will be the best World Cup year for France!

By the way, there's this "Most Entertaining Team award" presented by Yahoo! on fifaworldcup.com. The poll closes today (Sunday) and there are 6 team candidates: France, Italy, Germany, Brazil, Argentina, and Portugal.

Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo says he will join Real Madrid or Barcelona after making it clear he wants to leave Old Trafford. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/m/man_utd/5120332.stm)

Argh you son of a bitch. It's fine if he wants to leave, whatever, the only thing is, we need a suitable replacement, fast. Ok, here's what I want happening. We sell Ronaldo for 20 mil and use it to increase the offer for Riquelme or Mascherano.

*EDIT*

Should Italy win tonight, then the four clubs under investigation will be fully pardoned (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2006/07/08/nfooty308.xml&sSheet=/news/2006/07/08/ixuknews.html)

You KNOW that a large number of French people are going to use Zidane's absence from the penalty kicking as an excuse for why they didn't win.  It's going to be a "If Zidane was there, we would have scored ALL five times, giving our goalie more confidence which would have allowed him to stop the Italians from scoring".  You know, bullshit like that.

Speaking of Zidane, that was an absolutely BONEHEAD move he made. I mean what, did he actually think that they would NOT call such a blatent and flagrant foul just because it's the final game? The idiot may have ruined France's chances because his getting kicked out undoubtedly rattled the rest of the team psychologically. At the very least, he screwed himself out of having the most KICKASS final game of his career.

In any case, that's neither hear nor there. What's important is...being there to comfort Rika since she was supporting France.

I doubt Zidane's presence would've made a difference in the result. And in all, considering his dumb reaction to Materazzi's taunting, this was a kick ass game.
Title: The 2006 World Cup Thread!!!
Post by: maliciel on July 10, 2006, 04:22:16 AM
It would've. Zidane is a pivotal player in the French lineup, and his coolness in the first penalty shows why. Even if Trezeguet missed his shot at that time, it would've made a difference if Zidane was lined up to take one, as well.

There's rumours that Materazzi was ragging on Zidane the whole match, using racial slurs or what not. If that's true, then I suppose it was somewhat understandable. Albeit still stupid.
Title: The 2006 World Cup Thread!!!
Post by: Rei-chan on July 10, 2006, 04:47:41 AM
Well, I can see that maybe Zidane had reasons to want to hit him, but that's really no excuse to behave like that. It wouldnt be acceptable in any small local sport match, and much less in such an important international one. It's really sad that someone's last game ended with such an action. I saw LOTS of men acting like assholes in those games, but that doesn't give anyone a right to go hitting each other... Aren't sports supposed to teach a lot of discipline? -_-
Title: The 2006 World Cup Thread!!!
Post by: kappadapyon on July 10, 2006, 04:52:26 AM
I thought Zidane cracked because he already was in pain from taking one to the shoulder, rather than the fact that Materazzi was ragging on him. I don't recall Materazzi going out of his way to piss him off more than that one time (and boy, did he get what he had coming)... at least, not captured on camera. I guess we'll never know.

It was a tough game and while France had the upperhand, Italy stood their ground like nobody's business. If they hadn't scored in the first half, the game would've probably been France's, I recognize that much. France worked them to exhaustion in the second one.
Title: The 2006 World Cup Thread!!!
Post by: JTRIX on July 10, 2006, 05:02:16 AM
I still think there's something going on between Zidane and Materazzi. Perhaps he said something about him and his last game career that pissed him off. Or that he scored a "controversal" PK while Materazzi actually scored with a nice goal........ I don't know what but it's probably something bad against Zidane.

But man...... what a move Zidane did, that is something we all remember for this last game in career instead of him getting the World Cup or Golden Ball award.

Anyway good game France, I won't blame on anyone in France since they all played well! All I would say is that maybe Barthez is too short to save goals that he can't reach!

Agreed with the whole Zidane deal...i love em to death but he shouldn't have done what he did no matter the circumstances...its a professional game on the largest stage in the world and to top it all of its the end of his career...ah well, italy defense was pretty crazy and they deserved the win even though france was the overall better team and even played better till all the players left (zidane, henry, ribery)....

I think Italy deserves the win.  Yes, Materazzi is an asshole for what he had done to Zidane, and it's sad to see Zidane ends his career in this way.  But I don't think Zidane's presence would have made a difference in the end.  I also think that the first penalty kick was a miss call.  I'm happy that Italy wins the champion but it's sad to see the game decided by PK and Zidane deserves a nice farewell from the football fans all over the world.

I don't mind that it was decided by PK. It only goes to show how close in level both teams were.

(Considering that they had two extra periods, too.)

Technically Zidane's red card was wrong. No one of the three judges on the field didn't see the incident. The game wasn't stopped. The fourth or fifth judge saw the incident on a screen and relying on that statement the head referee gave the red card to Zidane.

However, according the FIFA rules, they can't judge these kinds of things watching video footage.

It was a nice game though, and gotta congratulate Italy for a great play.

Technical terms have very little to do with whether his card was right or wrong. What he did counted as an agression, and the cameras caught it. Any judge would've passed the same judgment after seeing the incident. It would've pissed me off that Zidane kept playing after headbutting another player in the chest, knowing that the cameras captured it.

absolutely - and apparently, he was spotted by the fourth official (not the fifth official) who is allowed to inform the ref (unlike the fifth, who is only allowed to comment if asked by the ref) - so it was technically right as well as being just. still: to piss off Zidane, Materazzi must have said something truly disgusting ;)

I think Zidane knows very well that it's an international game, that it's his last game, what he did was wrong etc... He's been playing so long. He cannot possibly NOT know all this.

I'm not condoning his actions, but I think that irregardless of whether he's a player on the pitch, captain of the team, talisman of the French team and hence expected to be disciplined and whatever, he's still human. If Materazzi was really being an ass and really ragging on him in a really bad way, I can completely understand why Zidane reacted the way he did. Few can actually walk away from insults hailed on them by opponents without snapping, especially when they are already under the heavy scrutiny of others while bearing a lot of pressure on their shoulders to perform up to and beyond people's expectations.

But really. This is all conjecture at this point in time. Nobody really knows for sure as to what it was that Materazzi said that caused Zidane to explode and the both of them are keeping quiet about it so... *shrug* I'm just sad that because of it he missed out on the rest of the game that's all. :(

That said, I did find it highly amusing that Zizou chose to use his head and not his fists. XDDD

They've just been talking about it on the news and supposedly Materazzi said something about Zidane's mother, calling her a whore or something along those lines. It just so happens that Zidane's mum is quite ill at the moment and infact went to hospital the morning of the final so it wasn't the best thing to say to Zidane.
Title: The 2006 World Cup Thread!!!
Post by: kappadapyon on July 10, 2006, 09:05:13 PM
The sad thing here is that everything is on Materazzi's side right now. "Supposedly" doesn't account for "fact", and for all we know he might've asked Zidane "hey shorty, how's the weather down there". The day players start needing to wear mics in order to know who pissed the other off is indeed a sad one.

Yes, Zidane is human, and to lose your temper is equally human. I respect the guy for his long (and fruitful) career. I'm only angry that his retiring game ended up in the locker rooms because of a second of anger: it put a dent on what could have otherwise been a great game.

Unless you're there at the time and hear it straight from the horses mouth then it's always going to be a supposedly but that's just what the Italian players have been saying happened and I see no reason why they would lie about something their own team mate said. They could of course exagerate it but I think we all know whatever was said it wasn't exactly anything too nice if it made Zidane react like that.

it's one of those things that just happens sometimes in the heat of the moment. i'm sure at the time for zizou nothing else mattered and he just wanted to head materazzi as hard as he could. oh well, it certainly will not taint his career in any way but that moment will certainly live on in years to come and mentioned in the same way as maradona's "hand of god", baggio's penalty miss and things like that..

i'm just sad that paolo maldini managed to miss lifting the cup, or any other cup for that matter, for italy after such an illustrious career.. :(

'He looked at me with a huge arrogance and said, `If you really want my shirt I'll give it to you afterwards'. I replied with an insult, that's true.'

The fact is Materazzi is well known for being a butcher during the "calcio italiano".

He will deny his words but Zidane is not the guy to act violently for nothing (by the way, remember Zidane reading the text against racism before one match and keep in mind that he is from Algeria), so there was some hard talking and the final + stress made Zidane acts this way.

If you watch carefully the sequence in slow, you'll see Zidane walking away with a smile (like "well, let's forget this and leave me alone") after having Materazzi on his shoulders and arms... and as he's away, Materazzi talks a little more, it's this sentence that made Zidane acting.

So, this stuff just reveals the evidence : football is full of racism and verbal violence. And I'm sure that the italian's words were very very sin... I just hope this story will help to fight this more.

Unfortunately, this seems to be the way of the modern football world. Dirty tactics such as diving and getting opposing players angry enough to warrant a red card can be seen in some countries (not naming any names eh Portugal?) as a smart tactic, rather than the cheap desperate act it really is. FIFA should take action now and get rules imposed that will punish players for diving. Banning players over a certain period of time, and giving referees more power to immediately punish players for using such tactics will soon teach players a lesson and hopefully restore some beauty to the beautiful game.

The French interview is better :

Zidane says sorry for dismissal

Zinedine Zidane has publicly apologised for his sending off in the World Cup final, but claimed he did not regret his actions against Marco Materazzi.

Zidane, who was captaining his country in his final match before retirement, stated that Materazzi insulted his mother and sister in the seconds leading up to the incident, which saw the France midfielder thrust his head into the Italy defender's chest.

"I reacted badly and I would like to apologise for it," Zidane told Canal Plus. "I would like to apologise because a lot of children were watching the match. I do apologise but I don't regret my behaviour because regretting it would mean he was right to say what he said."

He added: "There was no tension with Materazzi before or during the match.

"He just put his hand onto my shirt and I told him to stop. I told him that if he wanted it I could give it to him at the end of the match.

"Then he said very harsh words to me and repeated them several times. I left but then I went back towards him and things went very fast.

"The words he said concerned my mother and sister.

"I heard them once, then twice, and the third time I couldn't control myself. I am a man and some words are harder to hear than actions.

"I would have rather been knocked down than hear that."

I thought the suspension on Materazzi was just idiotic. If it was Zidane who did the provoking and Materazzi head-butted him, I really doubt the same thing would have applied. Look, I understand why Zidane did the headbutting, I'm fine with that, but somehow people are now praising him for his actions is beyond my comprehension.

provoking players in the final is an act of an coward. Zidane almost scored with the header and he wants Zidane to get sent off. But I think a good way was to walk off the field and not ram into someone's chest
