I think it was on IGN.com that I had read about George Lucas bringing Star Wars to TV, but there wasn't any set date as of yet.

New live action movies, guessing an hour long, that will feature other characters from the SW universe.

I think it will end up as a live action TV series. Lucas has nothing else to do so he might aswell make Star Wars until he dies. I'm really not bothered anymore though. It's all gonna be CGI to the max and made for kids with merchandising in mind.

these will either be awesome and everyone will watch them or they will suck badly and everyone will still watch them.

I swear Lucas is a genius.

Meet the villain of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, a double lightsaber-weilding pale, bald babe named Asajj Ventress. She appeared in 2-D form in previous cartoons, but gets 3-D digital animation in the upcoming film, opening Aug. 9. The movie is a prequel that takes place in the years before Anakin Skywalker becomes Darth Vader. It sets up a future animated TV series for the Cartoon Network and a first trailer debuts Thursday at 7:58 p.m. in all time zones on that and other Turner Networks: TBS, TNT, CNN and Boomerang.

LucasFilm Says "Star Wars: A Musical Journey" Bound For U.S.

After launching at London's O2 arena in April, a live stage treatment of the Star Wars series, Star Wars: A Musical Journey, will make its way to the U.S. But organizers say they're steering clear of a straight forward musical theater treatment or "R2-D2 rolling across the stage," and are instead preparing a recontextualization of the iconic film franchise featuring an enormous LED screen, classic films scenes and, of course, John Williams' landmark score.

First announced in late 2008, Star Wars: A Musical Journey debuts April 10 in London, where 17,000 will be the first to sample the bombastic production. Williams is personally rearranging the neo-romantic space opera's leitmotifs like "The Imperial March" and the "Star Wars (Main Theme)" for performance live by the 86-piece Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir. The symphony will perform in front of a 100-foot LED screen displaying a LucasFilm re-edit of all six movies into one 90-minute narrative that syncs to the beat of Williams' new work.

The idea for Journey came during the scoring phase of post-production on Revenge of the Sith according to Howard Roffman, president of Lucas Licensing and a 29-year veteran of the company. "We were really looking for something that would be big and spectacular and reach as many people as possible and still deliver a really fantastic experience," he says.

Williams — the man behind iconic scores for Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and more — was ecstatic to work in a new context according to tour partner Gregg Perloff whose Berkeley-based Another Planet Entertainment is producing the event.

"This is the first time that LucasFilm has authorized this kind of presentation, so that's a big deal," Perloff said. "When we showed [Williams] our plans he was looking at the technical aspects of it and saying to his manager and agent, 'God, we should do this every night.' Because no one's ever done it. He was so into it. He understands that certain music plays a certain way to a film and that it plays slightly different live — and so he's making sure that every piece is perfect for the live experience."

An exclusive preview for Rolling Stone gave an indication of the production's hair-raising potency, from the thundering drums of the "20th Century Fox Theme" to the Wagnerian "Star Wars (Main Theme)."

"This'll be the biggest, baddest sounding orchestra that anybody's ever heard," said Spencer Churchill, tour producer for Another Planet. All that power comes with a hefty back end — Churchill said A Musical Journey is bigger than 90 to 95 percent of all rock tours because of the stage, the LED screen, and all the vintage Star Wars costumes that will be displayed within several thousand square-feet of "front of the house" space each night. Churchill can't detail specific artifacts from the exhibition but said, "It will be a lot of stuff. A few of them have never been seen before."

"Let's put it this way," says Perloff, "We could sell tickets just for the exhibit and people will feel like they've got their money's worth."

"There's not one thing that can tell you what's under this roof while it's all happening," said Churchill, and that is part of the problem of the project. Star Wars has the most demanding fans in history, and some reacted derisively to news of A Musical Journey. The producers feel the pressure to satisfy them as well as a general audience.

"It's a different way of looking at the familiar," says Perloff. "It requires a great deal of thought as to, 'How do you make the live experience of this meet what the films are?' We can't have a third-rate production. We have so much respect for the films and John Williams' music that we want to elevate the audience to a certain standard.

"We're not going to fall victim to cheap gags, which you certainly could do in this case."

"You do have to walk that fine line," says Churchill. "Certainly you want it to be entertaining without it being kitschy and I think we are doing that completely. It's not a bunch of shtick. It's not R2-D2 going across the stage — that's what it's not going to be."

Tickets will range from $35 to $75, with more show dates throughout Europe and America to be announced.

Rumor: Might There Be a New Star Wars Film on the Horizon?

It almost always seems like there's a new Star Wars project on the horizon. From the recent computer animated TV series (that honestly, despite its different visual style and feature film misstep, has a tone and execution closer to the original trilogy than the prequels) to a forthcoming live action TV series, I don't think we'll ever be short of Star Wars media. However, when it comes to the feature film side of George Lucas' sci-fi epic, that's really where heads start turning. So listen up, because according to a blog entry (via AICN) by George Lucas collaborator Thomas Dolby, a brand new Star Wars film might actually be in the works.

In a December 5th blog entry, Dolby very nonchalantly states: "I'm in Tiburon, CA, jetlagged and wide awake at 5am… My host is friend and former collaborator Paul Sebastien, who over the years has worked for Xbox, Playstation, and now LucasArts. Last night he was telling me a little about the forthcoming Star Wars-related TV show, movie and online games—very cool indeed." Of course "Star Wars-related" leaves it a little open for interpretation, but mentioning a "movie" in the same breath as the TV series and video games makes it a little more than an empty statement. However, there's no word on what stories in the Star Wars universe a new flick would focus on. With all the exposure the Clone Wars are getting, I can't imagine anymore time being spent on another feature film in that time period.

Honestly, I think the best place for Star Wars to go is the future, after the conclusion of Return of the Jedi and a new trilogy should take a cue from the well-written and loyal-to-the-universe 19-novel series The New Jedi Order. A whole slew of characters from the original trilogy as well as the Expanded Universe are thrown into one series where the story revolves around a lethal alien force called the Yuuzhan Vong invading the galaxy some 21 years after the events seen in Return of the Jedi. The story is epic in scale, shaking the galaxy to its core by leaving no character safe from the clutches of a grisly fate at the hands of this new alien force. Anyway, all we can do for now is speculate, cheer, or complain until we hear anything official about a movie from George Lucas and company.

Lucas gives approval to animated Star Wars sitcom (http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118017233.html?categoryid=14&cs=1&ref=verttv)

Quote
Lucasfilm Animation is developing a new animated "Star Wars" TV comedy series.

Daytime Emmy and Gemini Award-winner Jennifer Hill ("The Backyardians") will produce with Todd Grimes ("Back at the Barnyard") directing. Brendan Hay ("The Daily Show") will be among the writers and Seth Green and Matthew Senreich, creators and executive producers of "Robot Chicken," will have "creative involvement.

Project marks the second "Star Wars" skein created by Lucasfilm Animation. The first was "Star Wars: The Clone Wars," which premiered in 2008 on the Cartoon Network. Series is currently in its second season.

No start date or network for the comedy skein have been announced.

A sitcom? Really? Apparently there's another series in the works that's attempting to appeal to pre-schoolers. Talk about overkill huh? No need for it, just give them a couple of years and then let them watch the original trilogy. I don't like the idea of a new generation getting more familar with the prequel garbage than the originals. Or that they know Anakin Skywalker before Han Solo, that's just so very wrong.

Here's a 90 minute review of Attack Of The Clones. Funny stuff. The dissection of Anakin and Padme's relationship is pure lols

Star Wars goes Blu Ray (but only the Special Edition Versions from 2004 :( )

http://www.starwars.com/themovies/saga/mebd/bluray/index.html (http://www.starwars.com/themovies/saga/mebd/bluray/index.html)

The Star Wars saga will at long last be released in a high-definition home video format as all six movies come to Blu-Ray in a Box Set in Fall 2011, as announced by George Lucas this morning at Celebration V. At the fan convention's Main Event, thousands of Star Wars fans braved the muggy heat of an Orlando morning to queue for a one-time only stage session between George Lucas and The Daily Show's Jon Stewart. Stewart asked Lucas questions submitted from the fan community, and one of the most frequently asked questions submitted online prior to the Main Event was about the saga's release on Blu-Ray.

"I wish I could say it was coming out this year," said Lucas, "but it will come out next year."

The set will feature all six live-action Star Wars feature films, with the highest picture and audio quality, along with extensive special features.

Star Wars fans were treated to a glimpse of bonus material, in the form of a long-lost deleted scene from Return of the Jedi. The scene has long been talked about online -- a sequence that depicts Luke Skywalker assembling his new, green-bladed lightsaber prior to infiltrating Jabba the Hutt's palace. After completing the Jedi weapon, Luke stashes it in R2-D2's dome. What makes the Jedi deleted clip so remarkable is that it made it all the way to postproduction before it was cut, so it is a rare example of a cut scene with completed visual effects and music.

Actor Mark Hamill came out to describe the scene, remarking that once again his original introduction in a Star Wars film was cut out (his Anchorhead introduction was, of course, cut from A New Hope). Luke's intro is purposely played as ominous, with his face cowled in shadows and his intentions unclear."I had the black cloak, the glove, and I thought, wow, this time around I get to be the antagonist. Little did I know I was predicting the path of the prequels," said Hamill, noting the similarities to Luke in this scene and Anakin Skywalker's appearance.

STAR WARS is the reason I love the movies.  Unfortunately I've pretty much put a moratorium on the original trilogy until they release legit ANAMORPHIC discs without the new-age CG splatter.  G. Lucas is King of the Assholes for not doing this.  Yeah the public are suckers for "director's cut" packages but at least we usually get what we originally saw in the theater (see: Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Superman).

So Blu-Ray...  whatever.  And yes, Han shot first.

Yeah, I knew about that 3D shizz George spouting for a while now.
When I had heard about it, I just shook my head. :smhid
George just continuing to milk/choke his creation.
Simon Pegg definitely hit that on the head, fo sho.

Original Trilogy > prequels

Funny, we've experienced these shenanigans from Lucas for SO long... I'm not even angry anymore. Seriously, it's gone beyond being upset about not being able to experience the same movies I saw in the theater when I was a kid.  Almost a calming inevitability.

Some day Lucas will be dead and we'll get what we want.  No, really...

At this point I'm sure Lucas would burn all the original prints once he's gone. That way people can only experience his 'vision' at its purest.

Well I thought the first two prequels were mediocre, I can't stand 3D at all, and the theater here doesn't have the equipment for 3D movies... so I'm guessing no. :P

I'm not a big fan of 3D either. I have only liked 1 film in 3D and that was Avatar. All of the others simply used it as a gimmick and didn't work around its shortcomings. I can see Star Wars being awesome in 3D if the conversion is done well if they don't make it all gimmicky with shit poking out at you and if they compensate for the 3D shortcomings such as brightness. The trench scenes on the Death Star in A New Hope seem like they would be kick ass.

I'm not a big fan of 3D (because the glasses make all movies look so damn dark) but I'm such a huge Star Wars geek that I'm definitely going. I pretty much have to especially since I've never seen the original trilogy on the big screen :sweatdrop:

That is one of the reasons why I am going to see them. For some reason my parents didn't take me to see them in the theater in 1997 when they were all re-released.

Rovio is coming back to the market with yet another iteration of Angry Birds. We’ve seen Rio, Seasons, Space and a plethora of plush toys, but now they took to Twitter and promoted “Next big thing” is coming. They stated that “Times Square, New York, October 8th, 10am EST” is where it’ll all go down and embedded an animated GIF that shows a Star Wars themed Angry Birds with a pig dressed up as a Jedi, packing a lightsaber. No word on if it’s another full blown mobile game, or simply just a bunch of toys.

Late reply I know, but with the way George Lucas has used the series name, I wouldn't be surprised if he considered that as canon

I don't know about the Dark Side winning, but here we are:
Quote
Disney buys Star Wars maker Lucasfilm from George Lucas

Disney is buying Lucasfilm, the company behind the Star Wars films, from its chairman and founder George Lucas for $4.05bn (£2.5bn).

Mr Lucas said: "It's now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of film-makers."

In a statement announcing the purchase, Disney said it planned to release a new Star Wars film, episode seven, in 2015.

That will be followed by episodes eight and nine and then one new movie every two or three years, the company said.

The last Star Wars film was 2005's Revenge of the Sith, and Disney said it believed there was "substantial pent-up demand".

Disney will pay about half in cash and half in stock, issuing 40 million Disney shares in the transaction.

The deal follows Disney's acquisitions of Pixar studios for $7.4bn in 2006 and Marvel comics for $4.2bn in 2009.

"Our valuation of Lucasfilm is roughly comparable to the value we placed on Marvel when we announced that acquisition in 2009," Disney said, adding that the valuation was almost entirely driven by the Star Wars franchise.

Transition

George Lucas launched Lucasfilm in 1971 and the first Star Wars film was released in 1977.

"For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next," Mr Lucas said.

"I've always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime."

Mr Lucas will continue as a creative consultant.

Kathleen Kennedy, currently co-chairman of Lucasfilm, will become president of the firm and will be the executive producer on the new Star Wars films.

When the later Star Wars films were released in the 1990s and 2000s, although they did well at the box office, they were generally not well-received by fans.

But Josh Dickey, film editor at Variety magazine in LA, said that Disney was a "great fit" to update Star Wars.

"They're so good at branding and brands. They're so good at working with existing intellectual property and making it resonate with fans and marketing it very well," he told BBC World Service radio.

"They're not as good at creating original content, except for their Pixar division.

"I think if you bring together the minds from Pixar [and] the minds from Disney, the news that Disney is going to reboot Star Wars was a lot more exciting to fans than just 'there's gonna be another Star Wars'."

Surprise

Lucasfilm is also the production company behind the Indiana Jones franchise, and fantasy films Willow and Labyrinth.

Michael Corty, analyst at Morning Star, said Disney's deal was clearly part of a pattern in buying new franchises.

"Pixar was the first big one, then Marvel, and now this one here," he said.

"Because Lucas is private, I would assume most investors would be surprised."

Well, not like LucasFilm was doing a great job with Star Wars anyway. Maybe this will be better. Disney's Marvel Universe films (Iron Man, Thor, Avengers), have been great.

I'm in the same boat about this, but I'll reserve judgement until I see something first.

Thrawn trilogy! Thrawn trilogy!

That would be instant nerdgasm, fo sho.

I heard about this on the news yesterday, and was like WTFUUG?!?!?
A new trilogy or reboot...... mah vote would be for new trilogy.

The prequels had a number of problems, hell a lot of problems, but it is true that Lucas often has some great ideas. He needs people to work with who will take those ideas and help him develop them into something that works. Alas he'd become so powerful and/or employed such sycophants that everyone just said "yes George" all the time.

Really, there's no reason to be upset, this is perhaps the best Star Wars news in years. What could happen is if they release the original trilogy as is on Blu-Ray. I was going to suggest Joss Whedon to direct, but I hear he is to be directing Avengers 2 and 3.  Anyone will be better at it now they can add their ideas and direction to the Universe, now that Lucas is removed out of the equation. I wouldn't say I am excited for Episode 7, but definately interested.

Also, something cool I found when reading other posts about this someone's proposed watching order of the series. (http://www.nomachetejuggling.com/2011/11/11/the-star-wars-saga-suggested-viewing-order/)

Here's my proposed watching order: 4, 5, 6.

You can throw in 3 if you really want, but you guys are being far too nice. 1 & 2 are terrible films and 3 really isn't that great either.

I see this Disney deal as nothing but positive, since Lucas was doing a shitty job with the series anyway. Everyone is doing reboots, but I'd say a sequel trilogy would be a better idea. I don't even mind if they recast some major roles if the source material is good (like the Thrawn trilogy) but they might just go with a new breed of Solos and Skywalkers. I fully agree with you, the prequels are garbage. Just found it an interesting read.

Returning characters in this sequel trilogy might be ok, but only sparsely. I hope C3P0 and R2D2 just stay the hell away. Their inclusion in the prequels was dumb as fuck.

There are rumours that Episode 7 will have a completely original story, though I feel that it'd defeat the purpose if it's intended to be called Episode 7. I do think it would be a shame to leave alone all the extended universe stories, but by the same token, if some of the original novels worked, who's to say that an original film won't? Whether or not they screw it up, being a Star Wars film, I don't see myself having a huge choice in whether I watch it or not.

EDIT While I wish that the prequels didn't exist, they do have their moments. Darth Maul was badass, as was the fight between him, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan. While I can't say that the concept was original, pod racing is pretty darn cool, I reckon. Also, Star Wars: Battle Front 2 is an excellent game. It must be one of the console games I've spent the most time playing.

Disney makes it official: JJ Abrams to direct seventh installment of 'Star Wars' franchise

By The Associated Press January 26, 2013 12:02 AM

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - It's official. The force is with J.J. Abrams.

The Walt Disney Co. issued a statement Friday night confirming reports that had been circulating for two days that Abrams, Emmy-award-winning creator of TV's "Lost" and director of 2009's "Star Trek" movie, has been pegged to direct the seventh installment of the "Star Wars" franchise.

"J.J. is the perfect director to helm this," said Kathleen Kennedy, the movie's producer and president of Lucasfilm, which was acquired by Disney last month for $4.06 billion.

"Beyond having such great instincts as a filmmaker, he has an intuitive understanding of this franchise. He understands the essence of the Star Wars experience," Kennedy said in the statement.

The movie will have a script from "Toy Story 3" writer Michael Arndt and a 2015 release.

Lawrence Kasdan, who wrote "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi" in the original trilogy, will work as a consultant on the new project.

Abrams has already headed the reboot of another storied space franchise, "Star Trek," for rival studio Paramount Pictures. The next installment in that series, "Star Trek: Into Darkness," is set to hit theatres May 17.

But he has long been known as a "Star Wars" devotee. Abrams spoke about the plot of the original "Star Wars" in the lecture series "TED Talks" in March 2007, and reportedly became enamoured of "Lost" co-creator Damon Lindelof partly because Lindelof was wearing a "Star Wars" T-shirt when they first met.

In 2009, Abrams told the Los Angeles Times: "As a kid, 'Star Wars' was much more my thing than 'Star Trek' was."

In Friday night's statement he called it an "absolute honour" to get the job.

"I may be even more grateful to George Lucas now than I was as a kid," Abrams said.

Lucas himself said in the statement that "I've consistently been impressed with J.J. as a filmmaker and storyteller. He's an ideal choice to direct the new Star Wars film and the legacy couldn't be in better hands."

Is it gonna be like a reboot??? This is gonna be interesting. BRING BACK LUKE!!

Spinoff movies of a young Han Solo and Boba Fett confirmed. (http://insidemovies.ew.com/2013/02/06/star-wars-spin-offs-young-han-solo-movie-boba-fett/) May as well. I always thought 'the skywalkers are the most important people in the universe' bit was restricting, when its a universe as rich in possibility as that.

Georges St-Pierre would like to play a villain in the new 'Star Wars' trilogy
As heroic as St-Pierre was throughout his entire UFC career, the popular fighter would much rather travel to the dark side for a part in 'Star Wars'

April 22, 2014 2:00 PM | By FOX Sports

Former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre is currently rehabilitating from his recent surgery to repair damage to the ACL in his knee, but that doesn't stop the paparazzi from grabbing the Canadian for an interview whenever he's out in public.

TMZ recently caught up with St-Pierre while he was walking out of a hospital on crutches, and happened to broach a different subject with the former champion -- most notably his budding acting career.

St-Pierre recently starred in 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier,' where he played French mercenary Georges Batroc. In the film, St-Pierre's character does battle with the first Avenger in a pretty substantial scene to the overall plot of the movie.

With his UFC career on hold for the foreseeable future, St-Pierre might have some more acting opportunities open up for him on the heels of his role in the 'Captain America' sequel. The Canadian star was asked about another superhero franchise he might be interested in pursuing a role in, and St-Pierre decided to instead turn his attention to a galaxy far, far away.

"I'm a big fan of 'Star Wars,'" St-Pierre said. "I know they are doing (part) seven, eight and nine."

Filming on "Star Wars: Episode VII" recently began in London, with other parts of the movie taking place in other locations such as Abu Dhabi. The film, directed by "Lost" co-creator J.J. Abrams, will be the first of a new set of trilogies following the original "Star Wars" movies released between 1977 and 1983.

Very little casting news has been revealed about the new movie, so there certainly could be an opening for St-Pierre in this or one of the upcoming sequels. One thing the former UFC champ knows for sure, he doesn't want to pick up a lightsaber and join the Jedi knights.

As heroic as St-Pierre was throughout his entire UFC career, the popular fighter would much rather travel to the dark side for a part in "Star Wars."

"Villain," St-Pierre answered when asked who he'd like to play in "Star Wars." "Villains are way more charismatic."

Georges Vader? Boba St-Pierre? The possibilities are endless.

He was way fun to watch in Winter Soldier (though I am biased because I was fangirling over having Batroc in the movie but w/e I'm off topic), so I wouldn't mind seeing him in Star Wars!

As someone who watched the original trilogy enough times to recite dialogue and try to reenact the lightsaber fights, I loved the teaser trailer. If your heart doesn't soar when the Falcon comes in, the Tie Fighters roll by and THAT music kicks in, then I don't know what to tell you.

My feelings on it were pretty much this.

You like dat website eh bro

Man. Had no idea he was so sick. RIP Kenny :/

Kenny Baker, a key part of the Star Wars saga as the actor who brought R2-D2 to life, has passed away. He was 81.

Standing 3 feet 8 inches tall, Baker created Artoo’s much-loved innocent yet adventurous personality from inside the droid, starting with 1977’s A New Hope. Whether it was the slow turn of Artoo’s dome to convey suspicion or nervous wobbles signifying fear, Baker made a robotic being seem very human. In addition, he played Paploo, the Ewok who memorably steals a speeder bike in 1983’s Return of the Jedi. The actor became a legend to Star Wars fans.

“Kenny Baker was a real gentleman as well as an incredible trooper who always worked hard under difficult circumstances,” said George Lucas. “A talented vaudevillian who could always make everybody laugh, Kenny was truly the heart and soul of R2-D2 and will be missed by all his fans and everyone who knew him.”

Born in Birmingham, England, Baker began acting at age 16. Along with the Star Wars films, his career also includes performances in The Elephant Man (1980), Time Bandits (1981), Lucasfilm’s Willow (1988), and more. In 1978, he immortalized Artoo at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, making cement footprints of the droid that remain outside the famed theater today.

“We’re all saddened to learn of Kenny’s passing,” said Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. “There is no Star Wars without R2-D2, and Kenny defined who R2-D2 was and is. He will be greatly missed.” (http://www.starwars.com/news/kenny-baker-the-actor-who-brought-r2-d2-to-life-passes-away)
