How bout that Shirokov kid? Dude is compared as the next Pavel Bure. Trying out in Canucks camp right now. Coaches are impressed with him. Lead the KHL second in pts. last season.

Pavel Bure was such a waste of pure talent because he didnt' give a damn about anybody after the Canucks lost to the Rangers in 94.  I hope this kid turns out BETTER than Bure, at least attitude wise.
Title: Re: Official Hockey Thread
Post by: Mugen on September 11, 2009, 01:54:02 AM
the problem with bure was that he had a fallout with the canucks management after a new contract in 1994. Dude has skills though.

Shirokov voluntarily asked his KHL team to release him so that he could sign with the canucks and try out for the team even though he might not make the team. (If hes cut, he will only be making $96,000 playing for moose, if he makes it, hes making the rookie maximum salary of $850k) He's taking a pretty big chance coming over here and bringing his GF over here to learn english. It's nice to see he has dedication.

Forsberg and Näslund ready to play for Modo

First Peter Forsberg – now also Markus Näslund.

Modo gets a pretty decent reinforcement in their precarious SEL situation. "Today we add to our roster two of the best Swedish hockey players of all time. It's a sports manager's dream come true," Modo sports manager Fredrik Andersson says. Modo has had a difficult beginning of the season, but now there's finally some good news for the Örnsköldsvik team. Following Peter Forsberg's decision to play for the team, Markus Näslund now chooses to do the same. And Peter Forsberg is ready to play for Modo in tonight's road game vs Brynäs already. "Everyone knows my heart beats for Modo. Now I just want to get out on the ice," Foppa says.

Ready within a few weeks

Markus Näslund, who retired from hockey this spring, will start practicing with the team within the next few days and is expected to be ready to play within a few weeks."I really long to play for Modo again, and the very fact that Peter and I get to do this together is of course something that feels very special," says Markus Näslund who has been on the board of directors since last summer.

Almost 2000 NHL games

Now it's time to lose the suit and roll up the sleeves again. "This season I have been following Modo from the stands and from the board room. I will do everything possible to get in shape and I hope I can add something on the ice, but as you all surely understand you can't just walk in and expect to perform at this level," Näslund continues. Peter Forsberg and Markus Näslund were a dominant force together in their youth and among other things won TV-pucken together in 1988. The last time they played a full season together for Modo was in 1992/93. The duo has played more than 1800 NHL games between the two of them, and scored almost 2000 points.

So team USA announced their team today. I lol'ed pretty hard when the crowd booed Phil Kessel and Jamie Langenbrunner.  And what's wrong with Mike Komisarek?  The coverage on tv showed Brian Burke shaking his head at the boos as if to say, "WTF is wrong with this city?"  I bet anyone in Boston would cheer Kessel if he scored a big time goal in a medal game.  Silly Bruins fans.

Title: Re: Official Hockey Thread

Man, what can I say about that game?  Some pretty bad giveaways, but Canada really stepped up their game.  They had an insane amount of possession time in the 2nd and 3rd, and how about that Jordan Eberle?  That kid is a magician, absolutely clutch.  I hope people don't start talking about "Oh, if Hamonic didn't get injured in the previous game" or "if De Hahn wasn't concussed" or whatever, that's not how the team wants to remember it.  I'm not sure who's eligible for return next year, but Cormier, Della Rovere, Eberle, Peitrangelo, Hall, Kardri, and the rest of the gang sure have really bright futures.

Congrats to team USA, they were the hungrier team, and they sure as hell brought their A Game.

TSN's color-commentator said it best: "This is the biggest collapse in the history of the World Juniors."

Don't get me wrong, good on the Russians for never giving up and shit, but really......they couldn't hold on to a 3-0 lead!?!?!?
Man there's gonna be a WHOLE lot of angry Canadians heading back to their hotels/crossing the border in the next 24 hours.

EDIT: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

And today it was unveiled that the Jets' new AHL affiliate will be known as the Timmies Double-Doubles IceCaps.

Nice logo design, but oh boy, they're going to be getting so many Tim Horton's jokes with this for a while.

Didn't realize that they unveiled their jerseys last week.

LEFT/White jersey - IceCaps player Jason King
RIGHT/Dark jersey - IceCaps president Danny Williams.

And yeah, like many NHL/AHL team affiliations, the jerseys are very, very similar in style and colour scheme. Only real differences in this case are the main logo on the chest (naturally), and the Jets logo being used for the shoulder patches.

I recognize that logo. With the exception of the modernized shoulder patches and the artwork details on the bottom band of white, that's what would have been worn by Canada's junior (under-20) teams in International play.

Sweltering Turkmenistan creates hockey league
Overcomes weather issue by building costly indoor skating rinks
The Associated Press | Posted: Apr 11, 2012 9:30 AM ET | Last Updated: Apr 11, 2012 11:53 PM ET

Ice hockey is hardly the most suitable sport for a desert nation where temperatures can soar as high as 50 C.

But, Turkmenistan's President Gurbanguli Berdymukhamedov has ordered a hockey league be created by state enterprises and departments.

State daily Neutral Turkmenistan reported Wednesday that the police are already busy setting up their own team.

Turkmenistan has overcome the weather issue by using revenue generated from its natural gas exports to build costly indoor skating rinks.

Critics are unlikely to make their thoughts public in a country where government opponents face severe reprisals.

Berdymukhamedov is the subject of an increasingly grand mythology and won presidential elections in February with 97 per cent of the vote.

Since he's retired and this doesn't actually reflect on the NHL or his NHL career, gonna post this here. News broke out yesterday in a Montreal newspaper that Eric Lindros is got married to his French-Canadian girlfriend in a Montreal church. Hockey fans could find this amusingly ironic considering Lindros' "past history" with Quebec when, as the projected #1 draft pick in the 1991 NHL Draft, he publicly stated that he did not want to and that he would refuse to play for the Quebec Nordiques.

Anyway, here's the original article from the Montreal newspaper it was posted in, the "Journal de Montréal", as well as a Google-translated version (the article is originally written in French, and the newspaper's website does not provide it's own English translation).

Eric Lindros will say yes to his Quebec
Véronique Lauzon | Journal de Montreal Date: Friday, November 23, 2012, 9:38 p.m. | Updated: Friday, November 23, 2012, 9:47 p.m.

This afternoon, Kina Lamarche and Eric Lindros will exchange their vows in a church in Montreal.

Many hockey fans find it ironic that Eric Lindros married in Quebec. Never mind, it is today that former hockey player ties the knot with Kina Lamarche. Montreal is that the bride and groom exchange their vows. As for the reception, it will take place outside the city.

20 years ago, Eric Lindros expressed his displeasure at being drafted by the Quebec Nordiques. A major transaction followed, and today, this topic remains sensitive to many Quebecers. We must believe Eric Lindros has turned the page on this event. And today, it is with pleasure that Ontarian married in Montreal.

Reached by phone, his fiancée on a cloud, "I'm not nervous. I'm just really excited about everything that happens, "said in impeccable French Kina Lamarche. "I enjoy every moment," she added.

Even if the couple lives in Toronto, Montreal is that they decided to celebrate one of the happiest days of their lives. Kina Lamarche Quebec and his family still lives in the province. Moreover, the businesswoman studied commerce at John Abbott College and Concordia University.

Businesswoman experienced
In Toronto, she is president of North American operations of the company Business Payments Travelex.

On two occasions, she was named the Stevie Award ceremony in New York, which recognizes women in business.

The organizing their wedding, which is to remain anonymous, said, speaking of Quebec: "This is an experienced businesswoman. She has a really impressive career. ".

Retired since 2007, Eric Lindros has also turned to the business community. It is now an entrepreneur.

It is a month full of emotions for the former hockey player. In addition to saying yes to the love of his life, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame Sports Philadelphia on November 8.

The big day
Last Thursday, the couple moved to Montreal to finalize preparations. Because love does not want to publicize their marriage too, they are still short on details.

In early October, the 39 year old man had told the journalist Marc De Foy he suspected that his marriage could not take place in complete privacy. Still, he added: "I wish that our marriage is a private event."

Security guards will ensure that this demand is met.
The organizer responsible for the wedding told the Journa l: "I know that some media will be in the church, but they can not enter. Same for the reception. "She adds that it is a pleasure to work with this couple:" The bride and groom are adorable. "

Word relatives
The ceremony will take place in the afternoon on the island of Montreal and the guests are then invited to a reception room located outside of the city. Regarding guests, the bride and groom have decided to celebrate their union with a relatively small number of people.

"I'm excited to see all those we love. Since a few days I get a lot of messages from people who wish us a beautiful wedding and a beautiful life together. It affects us greatly, "said Kina Lamarche.

It only remains to wish long life to the newlyweds!

Tuesday was Senior Night at Farmington (Minn.) High School, and senior goaltender Austin Krause was among those honored. But Krause wasn't particularly in the mood. He has spent this season being demoted to backup, losing playing time to a sophomore. This was just Krause's ninth start in 23 games. According to a team manager (via Puck Daddy), Krause had been planning to quit. He finally did so, spectacularly.

With three minutes remaining, and Farmington up by one, Krause corralled the puck behind the goal. The video picks up there as he skates it in front and casually slips it into his own net. He sends a middle finger to his bench, fires off a salute, and skates back to the locker room. The game was tied, and Farmington—with a third-string goalie in net, the sophomore was out with an injury—would concede another goal a minute later to lose.

at least he coulda dipsy doodle undressed himself and went top shelf XD

Be prepared to see the Japanese women's hockey team at the next Olympics, partially due to the Canadian who's on their coaching staff!

Canada’s MacLeod lends hockey expertise to Japanese women for Sochi 2014
CALGARY — Donna Spencer, The Canadian Press
Published Saturday, Feb. 16 2013, 1:20 PM EST | Last updated Saturday, Feb. 16 2013, 1:20 PM EST

Canadian hockey player Carla MacLeod plans to be at the 2014 Winter Olympics a year from now, but behind Japan’s bench.

The defenceman from Calgary won women’s hockey gold in 2006 and 2010 before retiring from the Canadian team.

Her international hockey career has continued, however, as an assistant coach of Japan’s women’s team.

Japan earned their berth to the Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, by winning a qualifying tournament in Slovakia last week.

“We’re in the midst of working out the details, but yeah, I’ll be with them in Sochi,” MacLeod says. “I never thought for one minute I’d be in Sochi, until I got this Japanese job and I thought ’maybe we can get there.’

“I guess any time you coach a team you become so attached to them. I just want to be there to hopefully help them and achieve their dream even further.”

The Japanese women will play hockey in the Winter Olympics for the first time since they were the host team in 1998.

They join defending champion Canada, the United States, Finland, Sweden, Russia, Germany and Switzerland in the field.

MacLeod, 30, likely won’t coach against her country in Sochi because Japan and Canada aren’t in the same pool.

“Even just to watch around the village and know the crew is there, my friends are there, there’s actually something very comforting in that,” she says. “Everyone has been so supportive of me in this venture.”

MacLeod had 12 goals and 27 assists in 79 games for Canada during her career, which also included a world championship in 2007.

The five-foot-four, 133-pound defender was a smart distributor of the puck at both ends of the ice and created offence from the back end.

MacLeod says she’s travelled to Japan 10 times since that country’s hockey federation hired her a year ago.

Her contract was for a year with the understanding that if Japan qualified for Sochi, she would continue with the program.

“The Japanese Ice Hockey Federation were looking at their situation very clearly,” she explains. “Their men were ranked 22nd in the world and their women were ranked 11th. If they wanted to make the Olympics, they knew their best odds were with the women’s team.”

“They put money into the women’s program. A part of that was finding a female coach they thought could help their group and the second piece was ensuring we had a camp every month.”

MacLeod is the only female on Japan’s coaching staff that includes head coach Yuji Iizuka and assistant Yoshifumi Fujisawa. The team physiotherapist was also MacLeod’s translator.

“These guys were very, very accepting and open to having me there and allowing my input to be heard,” she says. “I was arrogant as a player and I never gave these countries the credit they deserved as far as the effort these players are putting in. Their dreams are the same as ours. They’re working just as hard. They just don’t have the same level of game that we do here.

“Coaching is one of the biggest areas where we can help these programs. The players and most of the coaches are sponges and want to learn and improve.”

MacLeod estimates she’s picked up about 30 Japanese words. She wants to take Japanese lessons in Calgary so she can communicate more with her players heading into Sochi.

In addition to helping with on-ice systems, MacLeod developed a strength-training program for the Japanese women, who are fast and fit, but not big and strong.

“Their skill set was impressive. Their speed was incredible. Their tenacity, they wanted to do it right,” she says. “They just didn’t have the hockey sense. They didn’t understand how to use their tools to be as effective as they could be.

“That’s where I stepped in. I recommended a different forecheck or a different defensive zone coverage where we could be more aggressive because speed was our biggest attribute.”

Japan played an aggressive forecheck and penalty kill during the qualifying tournament.

They fell behind 3-0 to Norway in their opening game, but fought back to win 4-3. Japan then lost 1-0 in a shootout to host Slovakia before beating Denmark 5-0.

“It’s important to realize too that they’re not accustomed to winning,” MacLeod says. “A part of the process when I went over was to instill the belief in them and hopefully the self-confidence in them that they deserved to win and they can win.

“Heading into this tournament, we’d spent a lot of time on that and hired a mental coach as well. For them to be down 3-0 and never give up, that’s huge.”

She’ll join Japan for the Division 1 women’s world championship in Noray in April. Canada hosts the top-tier women’s world championship April 2-9 in Ottawa.

MacLeod is also an assistant coach of the Mount Royal University women’s hockey team in Calgary as well as an employee of RBC in their Olympic ambassadors program.

Juggling those jobs and multiple trips to a country in a time zone 16 hours ahead is taxing.

“It’s been a bit of a doozy, but it’s totally worth it,” MacLeod says. “It is a challenge for sure for me.”

Canada and the world of hockey lost a friend today with the passing of Canadian country singer Stompin' Tom Connors (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stompin_Tom_Connors).

A proud Canadian through and through, he had they type of career longevity that many artists can only hope for, spanning nearly 5 decades and dozens of album/single releases. Even if you weren't a big fan of his music in general, or even if you didn't know who he was/had never even heard of him before, as a hockey fan, chances are you've probably heard THIS song of his, which in turn reflected his own love of the game, at some point in time.

'Mr. Hockey' Gordie Howe turns 85 Sunday
Scotty Bowman calls him "the original hockey icon"
The Canadian Press | Posted: Mar 28, 2013 11:15 AM ET | Last Updated: Mar 31, 2013 9:51 AM ET

More than 30 family and friends will help Gordie Howe celebrate his 85th birthday Sunday at a private dinner in Detroit.

It's a day they will all cherish.

"We're hoping this will be a nice birthday, and we'll have a good time with Dad and all," son Mark said in a recent interview. "His memory loss is getting to the point where it's almost becoming difficult to do a lot of interaction with Dad. I'm sure this [birthday] will go well, but a year from now, I don't know what life's going to bring.

"So we're going to make the best of it."

Howe's family revealed just over a year ago that the hockey legend has a mild form of dementia.

Despite his health issues, Howe began celebrating his milestone birthday in early March when he attended a ceremony at a Vancouver Giants game.

Prior to Sunday's birthday dinner, he'll take in a Red Wings-Blackhawks game.

And the events won't end Sunday.

Howe will make another appearance at a Red Wings game against the Colorado Avalanche on Monday and attend charity hockey games in Calgary, Edmonton and possibly Vancouver in the coming weeks.

But Howe's family is especially looking forward to seeing him Sunday. He has spent recent months with daughter Cathy at her home in Texas where he enjoys the warm weather. He stays with sons Marty, Murray and Mark at other times during the year.

"I haven't seen Dad since just before Christmas," said Mark, the Red Wings' head pro scout. "Birthday or no birthday, I'm just looking forward to seeing him."

The same holds true for fans, who still can't get enough of Mr. Hockey.

"He's just an easygoing guy," said Marty. "You can talk to him for five minutes and think you've been friends for 30 years. That's always been his secret, I think."

Legendary coach Scotty Bowman says Howe is "the original hockey icon."

"He was a terrific player — size, strength, offence, defence, toughness, ability to score, ability to make plays," said Bowman. "If you were going to make a model of a hockey player for every category, you wouldn't be able to get a model better than him."

Fellow Hall of Famer Bobby Hull fondly remembers seeing his first NHL game at Maple Leaf Gardens between Toronto and Howe's Red Wings and listening to his exploits on an old Philips radio.

Hull said he and Howe "built up a mutual admiration society" because they always knew their confrontations would be clean.

"Some of the greatest games, likely, that I ever played in were in the old Detroit Olympia head-on-head against Howe," said Hull. "They were the golden years, as far as I was concerned, in the National Hockey League. We had to gear ourselves up every time we went to play against Detroit. It wasn't [us] playing against the Detroit Red Wings. It was [us] playing against Howe."

Bowman, known for being gruff and unsentimental, fondly recalled getting the opportunity to coach Howe in the 1980 NHL all-star game.

"That was a big highlight of my career in the NHL, especially an all-star game, to have Gordie in our lineup," said Bowman, a nine-time Stanley Cup winner.

Dennis Hull first faced Howe nearly 50 years ago when he debuted for the Chicago Blackhawks.

"I met Gordie Howe when I was 19 years old in my first game in the National Hockey League," said Hull. "It was against the Detroit Red Wings, and he was my hockey hero when I was a kid."

The hockey legends said Howe serves as an inspiration to other former NHLers as they get older. But Bobby Hull is certain aging doesn't sit well with Howe.

"Getting old isn't fun," he said. "I'd like to find the guy or the girl that coined the phrase that these are the golden years. Like hell they are. Give me back my youth. And, I'm sure he feels the same way."

Marty says Howe is "slowing down."

"He's starting to feel his age like he never did before," he said.

The public events are good for Howe's health, said Marty, because the interaction stimulates his brain and he always "perks up."

"At first, I was thinking, well, we just won't do as many events and stuff and let him go fishing and down to Florida and relax a little bit," Marty said. "But he can't stand still."

Howe, who Marty says is "strong as a bear," also remains physically active, fishing in the summer with Mark and practising his putting on the golf course.

"Dad's kind of a fixture down there," said Mark. "People look forward to having him down there. But when you have him, you cherish every day. You hope you have more, but you never know, so you take every day and live life to the fullest. That's your only other option."

Mark says Howe is looking forward to seeing family at his birthday celebration.

"It's getting tougher and tougher and tougher on him, but he loves being around his family," Mark said.

Howe's late wife Colleen suffered from Pick's disease, a rare form of dementia. Going through that experience with their mother has helped the Howes deal with their father's condition.

"What's gone on, it's part of life," said Mark. "When you're 85 years old, these things happen to people."

Crosby's sister follows her own hockey path
Updated: June 7, 2013 7:58 AM | By Donna Spencer, The Canadian Press

CALGARY - Taylor Crosby says she didn't choose goaltending to avoid comparisons with her famous brother Sidney.

The younger sister of the NHL superstar thinks she'll still be compared to him in terms of how far she goes in her hockey career. She's OK with that.

"Even now, there is a comparison I think from the media or other people, but I don't put it on myself," Taylor said Thursday night in Calgary. "I think a lot of people will expect you to be a certain way or to be a certain type of player and be really good.

"I know I'm my own person. I try to use him as a role model and (follow) his work ethic, but I don't compare myself to him. I'm never going to be him and he's never going to be me."

The 17-year-old from Cole Harbour, N.S., was one of 15 female goaltending prospects Hockey Canada invited to a five-day camp that opened Thursday evening at WinSport's Markin MacPhail Centre.

While Sidney Crosby and his Pittsburgh Penguins attempt to stave off elimination in the NHL's Eastern Conference final, Taylor is getting her first taste of the national women's hockey program.

She is one of eight goaltenders under the age of 18 invited to camp, while the other seven are under-22 prospects.

"It's really cool," she said. "It's my first time I've experienced being part of the national team program."

She didn't start playing hockey until the relatively late age of 10. Sidney, eight years her senior, was living away from home playing in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League for the Rimouski Oceanic.

Crosby can't quite pinpoint why goaltending was her calling, other than the fact her father Troy was a goaltender who was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in 1984.

"I just woke up one day and said 'going to be a goalie,'" she said. "Part of it was my dad. He was a goalie. I was always a little weird, so it kind of fits."

Crosby is entering her senior year at the Minnesota prep school Shattuck-St. Mary's, where her brother led the boys' team to a national title in 2003.

The five-foot-eight, 150-pound Crosby posted a 13-7 record, a 2.04 goals-against average, a .924 save percentage and three shutouts for the girls' prep team this past season.

Sidney Crosby started shooting pucks on his sister in 2010. He continues to do so if they happen to be home at the same time and Taylor is about to head off to school.

"As I get older I'm stopping a few more. I think he's getting frustrated," she said with a laugh.

There are perks to being Sidney Crosby's sibling. One is going to the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and Whistler, B.C.

Interestingly, Crosby chooses as her highlight the Canadian women's hockey team winning the gold medal ahead of her brother's overtime goal in the men's final. She sees Sidney as a brother first and a hockey player second.

"I think he's a really great person and a really great brother," Crosby said. "I'm just really happy he's my brother, not just because he's a hockey player, but the kind of person he is."

Crosby was a late addition to the women's under-18 invitees this week as the initial roster was seven.

"You never want to miss anybody," Hockey Canada's female scout Melody Davidson said. "She had shown potential in past years so it's probably a good move to take a look at where she's at, someone you don't get to see often and eligible to play for our country."

Davidson has watched Crosby play a few times over the years.

"Pretty good size in the net and she uses that size well," is Davidson's scouting report. "How she's going to mature and grow as a goalie is what we're checking in on and we'll see how it goes from there.

"She's young for sure and all these young goalies are inconsistent. You're never sure what you're going to get from them. That's what we're looking for at goalie camp - where do they fit in in terms of their consistency and their work ethic. In the end, it's about do they stop the puck or not?"

Crosby says she and Sidney regularly text each other. She's been watching his playoff games even though it's hard on her nerves.

"It's definitely emotional," she said. "I find myself holding the blanket over my head a lot, but I'm really happy for him.

"Although they are in a bit of a slump, he's seems to be happy and doing what he loves to do. As long as that's the case . . . and he doesn't get his teeth knocked out anymore."

Every team in Finland gets its own ‘NHL 14’ cover
By Greg Wyshynski | Puck Daddy – Wed, Jul 17, 2013 4:10 PM EDT

Being on the cover of an EA Sports video game is akin to being on a box of Wheaties for this generation of star athletes, even if the honor has been diminished somewhat by turning the NHL cover competition into a student council election.

But it could be worse: It could be that every team has multiple athletes on the cover of the games. Which is exactly what’s happening in Finland this year with ‘NHL 14’.

The 14 teams of SM-liiga (a.k.a. the Finnish Elite League) are all getting their own cover this year, as sold by Finnish retailer Anttila.com.

You can see all the covers here via Ryan Real (http://imgur.com/a/5opNF/layout/grid#0), who hipped us to the story.

Some of the covers are captured from game action, while others feature gloriously awkward poses. (Hey, look, it’s the world’s least threatening street gang.)

We imagine fans will purchase their favorite team’s game cover, but as non-committed SM-liiga fans we’re torn. Would we buy the multiple personality disorder Hämeenlinnan Pallokerho cover or the remedial Photoshopping of the Oulun Kärpät cover? (Yes, we know: We’re mocking someone else’s ‘Shopping skills. Glass houses, throwing stones, yadda yadda.)

Again, check out the covers here (http://imgur.com/a/5opNF/layout/grid#0). Which one is your favorite?

Canada's Olympic Jersey Set Leaks

Exactly two weeks before the planned unveiling date, a photo of Canada's three new Olympic jerseys has surfaced online. The photo above was posted to Reddit by "justacanuck88" who wrote, "The new Canadian Olympic Jersey's [sic] just came in. What do you think?"

I'm packing for my trip, so I have to post and run. In the meantime, answer the guy's question in the comments. What do you think? I'm saving my commentary for Oct. 8 when the jerseys are officially released.

What do I think?

Seriously, I look at those and I think They had BETTER look a hell of a lot better when our players are wearing them in full gear/over their pads, because looking at them like that, just on their own, that's not a jersey, it's just looks like a generic-brand long-sleeved "Canada" shirt that you'd find at Wal-Mart.

Pavel Padakin's Teddy Bear Goal (Look Out, Muppets!) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikZejnU0uEY#ws)

Quote
Hockey’s Most Adorable Tradition Involves Over 25,000 Teddy Bears
December 4, 2013 at 12:07am EST | Matt Kiebus

Minor league sports franchises live in relative anonymity to the casual sports fan. Their games typically don’t draw huge crowds and only a handful of their players go on to make an impact on the professional level. But there is one thing minor league teams get right, and that’s weird promotions.

The Calgary Hitmen are a Junior League team owned by the Calgary Flames that play in the Western Hockey League — to the average sports fan they might as well be a Quidditch team from Saturn.

But this past weekend the Hitmen hosted the 19th annual Petro-Canada Teddy Bear Toss — aka the greatest promotion in minor league hockey and perhaps the greatest promotion anywhere.

What is a Teddy Bear Toss, you ask? Well, it’s when 17,000 Calgary Hitmen fans make it rain with over 25,000 stuffed animals when their beloved Hitmen (ha, beloved hitmen) score their first goal of the game.

According to the Hitmen website, “Fans are asked to bring a stuffed toy (or two) to the game and toss it on the ice when the Hitmen score their first goal. All stuffed toys will then be shared amongst local charities in time for the holiday season, including the Cerebral Palsy Assocation, Salvation Army, Boys and Girls Clubs, Alberta Children’s Hospital, etc.”

This time it went down in the second period, when Hitmen winger Pavlo Padakin scored to break a 0-0 tie and send the Scotiabank Saddledome crowd into stuffed animal-tossing fury.

It was the second year in row that Padakin scored the Teddy Bear Toss goal. He celebrated by doing snow angels on the ice.

Because what else are you going to do when it’s raining stuffed animals?

But then again, not sure if they'd want to make this a permanent thing because then people would be on their asses even more for missing/blowing penalty calls. :P

Thing is, it does not have a default "start" page, so I just set it to link to the Canadian roster. :P

Stamkos won't participate in Sochi Olympics
Wednesday, 02.05.2014 / 4:39 PM / 2014 Olympics | NHL.com

Tampa Bay Lightning forward Steven Stamkos will not participate for Canada at the 2014 Sochi Olympics after a CT scan Wednesday showed the tibia in his right leg is not completely healed.

"After reviewing the CT scan this afternoon, Dr. Gutentag made it clear to me and to Steven that the tibia is not completely healed and therefore he should not be participating in game action at any time in the near future," general manager Steve Yzerman said in a statement released by the team. "Although the doctor was very pleased to this point with the healing process, he explained that the callus surrounding the fracture site is not 100 percent consolidated, and Steven will not be cleared to play in a game until that happens. It was a pretty clear cut decision, no gray areas at all."

Stamkos will continue his rehabilitation with the Lightning training staff and be evaluated again in 2-3 weeks.

Stamkos had been practicing with the team and taking contact, and his goal had been to return for Tampa Bay's game Saturday against the Detroit Red Wings to test out the leg prior to the Olympic break.

"Today is obviously very disappointing for me," Stamkos said. "I honestly believe that we did everything possible in order to have my injured leg ready in time for the Olympics, but I realize you can't force healing. I know, in the best interest of my long term health, I cannot represent Canada in Sochi, as much as I would like to. I would like to thank the training staff for their dedication and hard work and I look forward to returning to the Lightning once cleared by the medical team."

Stamkos broke his leg less than three months ago, Nov. 11 against the Boston Bruins, when he fell and collided with the goal post. He had 14 goals in his first 17 games and since the start of the 2011-12 season has 103 goals in 147 games.

Canada will now have to replace Stamkos on its Olympic roster and among the frontrunners for the spot is his teammate, Martin St. Louis, who has 25 goals and 54 points in 56 games. Philadelphia Flyers captain Claude Giroux and Carolina Hurricanes captain Eric Staal are also prime candidates.

St. Louis to take Stamkos' place on Canadian roster
Thursday, 02.06.2014 / 12:40 PM | NHL.com

Tampa Bay Lightning captain Martin St. Louis has been selected to replace Steven Stamkos on Canada's roster for the 2014 Sochi Olympics, Hockey Canada announced Thursday morning.

St. Louis, 38, will be going to his second Olympics, having played for Canada in 2006. It'll be his first international tournament since the 2009 IIHF World Championship, when he had 15 points in nine games.

"They called me yesterday," St. Louis said. "Great opportunity for me. I think if you asked Stamkos who he wants to replace him it would be me. So I'll do the best I can."

"It's great for Marty," Stamkos said. "If there is anyone in our locker room that deserves it from day one it is Marty."

The Lightning announced Wednesday that Stamkos has not been medically cleared to resume playing so he had to withdraw from the Olympics. Stamkos has been out of the lineup since Nov. 11, when he broke his right tibia in a game against the Boston Bruins at TD Garden.

"I don't see this as Marty replacing me. I see this as Marty getting the opportunity he deserves," Stamkos said.

St. Louis understood once the announcement about Stamkos was made that he would be a top candidate to replace him, so the news did not come as a surprise.

"Everybody that knows me knows I'm a pretty emotional guy. There has been a lot of that the last month. I heard from [Stamkos] that he wasn't going so I prepared myself," St. Louis said.

St. Louis is tied for 16th in the NHL in points this season with 54. He was considered to be of the top snubs when the Canadian roster was originally announced Jan. 7 and his name was not on the list. It was the second time in four years Hockey Canada general manager Steve Yzerman left him off the roster. Unlike the first time, Yzerman now serves as his GM in Tampa Bay as well.

Getting the call is yet another honor for St. Louis, who has gone on to an outstanding NHL career after going undrafted.

"I'm just glad to get the opportunity," St. Louis said. "I feel like my whole career has been a back-door entrance. This is no different. It's a big opportunity and I'm glad to be there."

He admitted there was disappointment over initially being left off the team.

"Of course I was bitter, but it wasn't motivation. I've been motivated for 10 years," St. Louis said. "If you are not motivated you are not considered for these things.

"As bitter as you can feel at times, you have to put that aside. You only get so many kicks at the can, so you take them."

One of those congratulating St. Louis on Thursday was Vancouver Canucks coach John Tortorella, who won a Stanley Cup with St. Louis in Tampa Bay. TSN's Amanda Stein reported he sent his former player a text with well wishes.

"They won't get him off the ice out there," Tortorella said. "He's that good. I couldn't be happier for him."

Canucks' Henrik Sedin out for Sochi Olympics
Thursday, 02.06.2014 / 6:50 PM | NHL.com

Vancouver Canucks center Henrik Sedin won't participate for Sweden in the 2014 Sochi Olympics, it was announced Thursday.

"I'm disappointed not to be physically able to represent my country at the Winter Olympic Games," Sedin said in a statement released by the Canucks. "This is a difficult decision but ultimately the best decision for me personally, Team Sweden and the Vancouver Canucks. I wish my teammates the best and look forward to returning to play."

Sedin was playing through a hand injury that required him to wear a splint when his ribs were injured by a cross-check from Phoenix Coyotes forward Martin Hanzal on Jan. 16.

Sedin played the Canucks' next game, Jan. 18 against the Calgary Flames, but left early. His 679 consecutive games streak ended Jan. 21 when he did not play against the Edmonton Oilers.

Earlier Thursday, Canucks coach John Tortorella announced Sedin would be held out of the final two games prior to the Olympic break. Sedin recently returned from missing six games due to the rib injury and played back-to-back nights Monday and Tuesday. But the center was unable to take faceoffs and was seen in discomfort on the bench.

"We are shutting Henrik down for the next two games," Tortorella said. "He wants to play, but he's not as effective as we need him to be right now."

Sedin's final decision about the Olympics was unknown at that point, but Tortorella made clear his position.

"To me -- and I've been in these situations before -- that is a family matter and that is the player's matter," Tortorella said. "That is his country and it's a very, very delicate situation. Right now, do I want him to go? Absolutely not. I'm thinking about our hockey club. But I am not having a conversation with him about that. That's his call. That's your country. So he's going to have to work that out with his family and let us know what he wants to do."

Sedin has nine goals and 40 points in 52 games this season, his 13th in the NHL.

Posting this here because it's more about the man as a whole than it is about what he's specifically done in the NHL. And of course, because Teemu is teh awesome.

From the blog of a local Winnipegger:
Quote
Saint Selänne of Helsinki
By: derick

As I write this, Teemu Selanne is playing one of the final games of a long and stellar career. He is a shoe-in for a place in the Hockey Hall of Fame, but I will argue here that perhaps a greater honour should be bestowed upon him when the time comes.

Earlier today, two former popes were introduced into sainthood. In the Roman Catholic tradition, the canonization process involves scouring records around the world for two miracles that can be attributed to the individual that is to be declared a saint. It is a somewhat farcical process where fortunate coincidences involving the individual are deemed to be miracles and subsequently used to justify a decision to canonize that has already been made. These incidences usually involve gravely ill people making an unexplained recovery after praying to or being blessed by the individual in question. Given the number of gravely ill people who look to high profile religious figures for help, it would be a statistical anomaly if at least two so-called miracles did not occur.

If you ask me, the canonization process should be more like the process of appointing a judge to the Supreme Court. The appointment should be proposed by the Pope, then vetted by a council of wise Bishops before becoming official. The whole “miracle” facade should be dispensed with. There is little chance that it will be however, so if this is the standard that we’re setting, I think Teemu should be considered a future candidate.

Observe: miracle number one… (http://articles.latimes.com/2013/apr/18/sports/la-sp-elliott-20130419)

A 10 year old boy — a Ducks fan — with stage 4 terminal cancer. “We were both out of hope, out of energy” explained the father. “And when Teemu and the other people came in the room it was like a fresh breeze, fresh air. It was like a prophet entered the room, an angel.”

Teemu made a promise to young Faryan that if he recovered from his illness, he would be a special guest of Teemu’s at a Duck’s game.

The boy, inspired by Teemu’s promise, did recover against all odds, and Selanne kept his promise. “All these little things makes the kid hopeful” said Faryan’s mother. “Athletes have lots of responsibilities on their shoulders, and for someone like him to go out of their way and provide this for society, it’s really fantastic.”

It is nothing new for Teemu Selanne though. The Finnish Flash has spent a great deal of time visiting and encouraging sick kids, both here in North America and back home in Finland where he has established a foundation to help sick children.  No doubt many other kids have been touched by the aura of Saint Teemu.

And if, by chance, a second miracle cannot be found in the records of the children’s hospitals, how is this for a miracle: the 43 year old hockey player has assisted on the first two Anaheim Ducks goals in a feisty playoff game against the Dallas Stars tonight … almost 22 years after scoring two assists in his very first NHL game.

If that isn’t enough, here is even more evidence of his unique impact on people: after playing only 3 1/2 years in Winnipeg, Selanne has made such an impression upon the city that crusty and bitter Winnipeggers perk up at the very mention of his name, die-hard Jets fans don’t know who to cheer for when he comes to town … and at least one fan in Winnipeg has even gone so far as to suggest that Teemu should be inducted into Sainthood.

Legendary Soviet coach Tikhonov dies at 84
Monday, 11.24.2014 / 9:32 AM

Viktor Tikhonov, the legendary coach of the Soviet Union national team powerhouses, died Monday after a long illness. He was 84.

Tikhonov won three Olympic gold medals and eight World Championships as the coach of the Soviet Union national team, later the Russian national team, between 1979 and 1992. He also led his team to the title at the 1981 Canada Cup, a competition which pitted the professional players from the top hockey-playing countries.

He also won an Olympic silver medal, a World Championships silver medal and two bronze medals at the World Championships. In many circles, Tikhonov gained the most notice for the Olympic silver medal, which came in 1980 at Lake Placid when his powerhouse team was upset by the United States in the medal round in a contest that simply became known as the "Miracle on Ice."

In that game, Tikhonov replaced Viacheslav Tretiak, considered by many to be the best goalie in the world, with Vladimir Mishkyn after Tretiak allowed two first-period goals. The Americans shocked the hockey world by winning the game 4-3. It was a that would haunt Tikhonov for the rest of an otherwise amazing coaching career.

Domestically, Tikhonov coached CSKA Moscow, the country's biggest and most popular club, to 13 league titles from 1977 to 1989 and 13 straight European Cup titles from 1978-1990.

Tikhonov was born in Moscow in 1930 and played defense in Russia's top professional league, winning four championships. He also coached Dinamo Riga before landing the job with CSKA Moscow.

So, starting next season (2015-16), the American Hockey League (aka the top-tier pro hockey minor league here in North America) will have a new Pacific Division as 5 teams are moving west. For anyone not in the know, the majority of the AHL's teams are located on the eastern half of North America, and as such, there can be (and have been) logistical issues when a western-based NHL team needs to re-call/send down players to it's AHL affiliate team when said affiliate is located on the other side of the continent because it's an eastern-based team. It also makes sense for affiliates to be located somewhat close to their NHL affiliate club as it then makes it easier for the NHL club to monitor the progress and development of the players it has sent there to strengthen and develop their game/skill set.  So basically, 5 NHL teams have taken literal ownership of their AHL affiliates (meaning that both the NHL and AHL teams have the same owners) and are moving their teams "closer to home" so to speak.

Icethetics.co - Five AHL teams relocating to California cities in 2015 (http://www.icethetics.co/blog/2015/1/29/five-ahl-teams-relocating-to-california-cities-for-2015-16)

Thing is, some of the cities that are becoming home to new AHL teams already have teams of their own in the East Coast Hockey League (aka the ECHL), which is North America's second-tier pro hockey minor league. As such, many of those ECHL teams are also going to be moving. In some cases, the ECHL team and AHL team will just swap cities (and in certain cases, they'll even be swapping team names/logos), so at least not all of the fans in the affected cities will have to lose the presence of a local sports team.

Meanwhilte, two other AHL teams will also be moving, though for them the moves won't be quite as far, nor will they be permanent (at most, a season or two). The Winnipeg Jets will be moving their AHL affiliate from St. John's, Newfoundland, back to Winnipeg. However, once they've arranged a deal with a nearby city that has a suitable arena for it, the AHL team will be moved from Winnipeg to that new city. Right now it looks like it'll most likely be the city of Thunder Bay, Ontario, which is only a 60 minute flight away. Meanwhile, the Montreal Canadiens will be moving their AHL team from Hamilton to St. John's, however they already have plans to eventually move the AHL team to Laval, Quebec, which is basically a suburb of Montreal (basically 30 minutes by car or subway). Both AHL teams will eventually be moved to their planned future home cities once new arenas have been built.

Icethetics.co - Two more AHL teams to relocate in fall 2015 (http://www.icethetics.co/blog/2015/3/13/two-more-ahl-teams-to-relocate-in-fall-2015)

Here's an infographic outlining all of the AHL & ECHL teams that are going to be moving for next year, the data (i.e. "who's going where" and "what will they be called") is current as of 2015.04.02, when the new AHL affiliates for the San Jose Sharks and Edmonton Oilers unveiled the logos that they'll be using next season:

Well, after playing the proverbial game of "musical chairs", NHL-AHL affiliations for the 2015-16 season have been finalized. The infographic detailing the old and new affiliations comes courtesy of the guys at icethetics (http://www.icethetics.co/blog/2015/4/22/ahl-affiliation-swaps-announced-for-2015-16).

On another note, tomorrow True North will be having a press conference where they are supposed to be making a formal announcement on the Jets' new AHL affiliate (https://twitter.com/NHLJets/status/594219131110580226) (most people here are thinking that it's going to be about the identity/branding of said affiliate). As a bit of a follow-up to my previous post in this thread, speculation now has been going around about using the 2015-16 season as a test to see if it could be practical to keep both the Jets and the AHL affiliate here in Peg Sheety, playing out of MTS Centre.  Apparently the deal that had been in the works to eventually have the team move to Thunder Bay once a new arena had been completed has fallen through. Whether or not tomorrow's announcement actually deals with/discusses that obviously remains to be seen, and there would definitely be a lot of questions regarding whether or not the people here are able/would be able/would be willing to financially support 2 professional hockey teams for the long-term.

Speaking personally, I'm hoping that they officially resurrect them as the Manitoba Moose. It's a brand/identity that is familiar and known to both local fans and to fans of the AHL in particular. Also, if the team is only going to be here for one season or even two, I don't really see it being practical or worth all of the effort and investment that it would take to establish a new identity and get new merchandise made with it. On the other hand, if they do decide to keep the AHL affiliate here long-term, then coming up with a new team identity isn't that bad of an idea, though it would mean that I'd have to shell out some more money to buy the new jerseys.  :P2

Nice to see that they're bringing back the familiar Moose logo (instead of doing a redesign). The only real change is that the logo has been re-coloured at bit so that the team's overall look will tie in better with the Jets' colours.

On the plus side, it's nice that they're bringing back a familiar brand and that there's going to be another, more affordable option for hockey fans here in Peg Sheety.

On the downside, now I'm going to have to buy new jerseys.

You win some, you lose some. :P2

EDIT: And the guys at icethetics have already updated the team affiliations infographic. :thumbsup

And thirdly...many a hockey fan knows and remembers Matt Wuest, the founder of the CapGeek.com website that lost his battle with cancer just less than two months ago. Since then, it's been hard to find any website/resource anywhere online that was as organized and that had the depth of independently-collected information that CapGeek had.

A couple of days ago, it appears that a new site has popped up in an attempt to pick up the torch, GeneralFanager.com (http://www.generalfanager.com/). Much like CapGeek, GeneralFanager contains data outlining individual player salaries, cap hits, who's a UFA and who's an RFA, team stats, general information about the NHL's CBA (Collective Bargaining Agreement) etc.  With any luck, it will prove to be a worthy successor to the work Matt Wuest started with CapGeek. :thumbsup

Ok, it may just be me, but whenever the IIHF World Championships have been held in Europe, have they always had a "penalty song"?

Is this a common thing in the European leagues or in the KHL? I may have just never noticed it before, or it may be that this song is particularly annoying.

KHL expanding to China in 2016-17, South Korea could be next
By: Jared Clinton on December 14, 2015

The first expansion team for the 2016-17 season has been awarded, but it won’t be playing in Las Vegas or Quebec City. The KHL announced Monday the league will have a team from Beijing joining the league, and the new club will begin playing in September 2016, according to TASS. (http://tass.ru/en/sport/843869)

Beijing’s KHL team, which is yet unnamed, will play at the 18,000-seat MasterCard Center in Beijing, which currently plays host to the Chinese Basketball Association’s Beijing Ducks. The arena was also host to the basketball tournament at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The team will be backed by Russian and Chinese businesses, and the league will also be supplying Beijing with a development academy.

“The task is to build a hockey vertical: a KHL team, a second team playing in the Chinese league, a team in the youth league and mass involvement so that all who wish can play ice hockey and there should be more ice rinks that are public and open for all,” vice president of the Russian Ice Hockey Federation, Roman Rotenberg, told TASS.ru. “This is a priority task.” (http://tass.ru/en/sport/843869)

The expansion to China has long been rumored, and Pro Hockey Players Association agent Darryl Wolski said in June that the league was planning an expansion into Beijing. One big reason for the expansion is the 2022 Winter Olympics, which are set to take place in Beijing. China was said to be a potential host for a KHL game as soon as this season, though it doesn’t appear as though that will happen.

The KHL currently features 28 teams, with most situated in Russia. Other countries with KHL clubs include Kazakhstan (Barys Astana), Belarus (Dinamo Minsk), Latvia (Dinamo Riga), Slovakia (HC Slovan Bratislava), Finland (Jokerit) and Croatia (Medvescak Zagreb).

According to TSN’s Rick Westhead, the league could also be looking into expansion to Seoul, South Korea in the next “year or two.” (https://twitter.com/rwesthead/status/676507539022979072)

For years, the KHL has been looking to grow and expand in an attempt to compete with the NHL and become a worldwide league. In 2012, former league president Alexander Medvedev mentioned the potential for the league to expand to 64 teams. Medvedev was replaced by Dmitry Chernyshenko in November 2014.

Yep, all the members of Team NA are American and Canadian players who are 23 years old and younger, hence the nicknames of the "Under-24" team and "Young Guns" team that they've unofficially been called in news broadcasts, newspapers, etc (at least, up here in Canada anyway).

I read the following and couldn't believe this guy's name-
General manager Miroslav Satan used virtually all the countries at his disposal in selecting the first 16 players to Team Europe for the 2016 World Cup of Hockey during a press conference in Toronto on Wednesday.

The guy's name is Satan. I hope it's pronounced differently.

Yeah, don't worry, you're not the first person who's had that reaction upon seeing his name.

In this case, the emphasis is on the second syllable, and both of the "A"s in his name are pronounced with a "short" sound, so while it looks like "Satan", the pronunciation is like..."sah-TAHN".

Report: Ilya Kovalchuk leaving SKA to play for KHL’s Chinese expansion team
By: Jared Clinton on March 24, 2016

SKA St. Petersburg has continued to roll on through the KHL post-season without the services of Ilya Kovalchuk, who was stripped of the captaincy and has been a healthy scratch for most of the first two rounds, but the saga may be coming to a bizarre close.

According to Agence France-Presse’s Gabrielle Tetrault-Farber, Russian media has been told that Kovalchuk will be leaving St. Petersburg at the end of this season and will suit up for the KHL’s expansion team in China next season. It had been previously reported that Kovalchuk would remain with SKA until at least April 30, meaning any movement from St. Petersburg may have to wait until the summer. SKA is denying the move will take place, however.

The KHL signed a “protocol of intentions” with Chinese club HC Red Star Kunlun in mid-March that would see the team participate in the 2016-17 KHL campaign. Their addition to the league hasn’t yet been finalized as Kunlun needs to “present financial guarantees by April 30th, 2016, comply with conditions imposed on clubs participants and adhere to the rules established by the KHL Regulations.”

A final decision will be made regarding the club this summer, but it’s likely they will debut in the league when the next KHL season opens.

Kovalchuk, 32, has not played since the third game of SKA’s second-round series against Dynamo Moscow, a series which St. Petersburg was trailing 2-1 with Kovalchuk but went on to win 4-2 with their former captain out of the lineup.

When Kovalchuk originally returned to the SKA lineup after being scratched for each of SKA’s wins in the first round series victory over Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, there was some speculation that the relationship between he and SKA could be salvaged, though much of that hope disappeared when he was once again shelved by the club. There’s still a possibility he could stay in St. Petersburg, but the chances seem incredibly slim.

Likewise, there was talk of a potential NHL return for the former Rocket Richard winner, but Kovalchuk would have to jump through hoops in order to return to North America next season. He would need all 30 teams to sign off on his return if he were to come back to the NHL in 2016-17, and his other options include sitting out an entire season or waiting until 2018 to sign a free agent deal with an NHL club of his choosing.

Kovalchuk ending up with the Chinese expansion club, if that comes to pass, would be one of the most unexpected resolutions to his situation with SKA. Kovalchuk has a big-money contract, and that will be a lot for the expansion franchise to take on. It will, however, give him a fresh start on a team that will likely be sorely lacking for standout talent, and it gives them instant star power to help grow the game in China.

Dayum, pretty cool commercial done by KHL franchise SKA St. Petersburg.  Datsyuk and Kovalchuk front and center (perhaps the latter's previously announced deal/agreement to join the KHL's new Chinese expansion team fell through).

BarDown.com - Epic 2016 St. Petersburg commercial starring Datsyuk & Kovalchuk is completely outrageous (http://www2.tsn.ca/bardown/Story.aspx?Epic%2b2016%2bSt.%2bPetersburg%2bcommercial%2bstarring%2bDatsyuk%2b%2526%2bKovalchuk%2bis%2bcompletely%2boutrageous&id=587624)

With all 8 teams in the World Cup of Hockey having SO much talent on their rosters, it's interesting to see how the coaches set their lines up (and more importantly, to see which players are willing to step into a role other than being a/one of the "top guys" on their franchise teams).

So it looks like the new KHL franchise isn't just a fad. It looks like the sport is starting to have a pretty serious following in China, particularly amongst the younger generations. Case in point, Boston Bruins player Matt Belesky wrote a piece for The Players Tribune about some players and staff from the Bruins who recently flew over to give a hand and work with some kids at a hockey camp in Shanghai.

World Cup round robin stage is DONE, and unfortunately for Teams North America, Czech Republic, Finland and USA, so are they. :O2

Biggest shock (for me personally) was that both Finland and USA weren't able to get a single win.  I, like many others, figured the standings would see a bunch of matching win-loss records, which would then make it necessary to look at the head-to-head records and/or goal differentials to determine who would advance to the playoff round.

Not gonna lie, I was rooting for Finland to beat the Russians in the final round robin game last night because I wanted Team North America to advance and face Canada in the semifinals. Oh well, still lurve ya Finland 'cuz you gave the Jets Selanne and Laine.
8)2  :finland:

Oh, and go figure, the Jets had 7 players taking part in this tournament, and NONE of them were on teams that advanced to the playoffs.  Technically, we do hold the NHL rights to Ivan Telegin, who's on the Russian team here, but he's currently in the KHL after not being able to crack the Jets' NHL roster when he was here, so he doesn't count. :P2  On the plus side, our Head Coach, Paul Maurice, IS going to the playoff round since he is one of the assistant coaches for Team Europe.

Don't know about anyone else, but I've been liking the fact that they're trying out the "Ref Cam" during this tournament. Only bummer about it (if anything) is that for us watching on TV, so far we're only getting clips here and there. 11-year-old Japanese boy could be next hockey prodigy

The next great hockey talent could very well come from Japan. Not the most traditional location, but a highlight reel showcasing 11-year-old Aito Iguchi that's circulating on the internet looks pretty convincing.

The native of Saitama has moves that suggest he could have a future in NHL, or at the very least rival the young talent in North America.

Another step forward has been taken in trying to, as they say, "grow the game" in Asia. And seeing as how the next Winter Olympics (https://www.olympic.org/pyeongchang-2018) are taking place in Pyeongchang, South Korea (https://www.pyeongchang2018.com/en/index), there's almost something poetic about this happening now.

Update. Nike has now started to officially unveil the Olympic hockey jerseys they've come up with. Not exactly sure why they're only providing individual looks at the jerseys of 4 countries, and even then it's really only 3 countries, since they're only showing us half of Russia's set. There's really no reason why they couldn't have provided a full look at ALL the jerseys from ALL of the countries that will be playing. Hopefully they update and post more, after which I'll just have to update this post.

And Finland is the first country to unveil it's jerseys for the 2022 Beijing Olympics:

Looking WAAAAAAAAAAAAY better than the ones they made for Pyongchang that had the foogly designs on the sleeves (just look on the previous page of this thread for a reminder of what those looked like).

Not sure about the black gloves, but other than that, they're decent.

They're alright, but I'm sorry, these just look like they'd be better soccer jerseys IMO. Or worse, the design looks like something you'd find at Walmart.
