Intellectual property suits are messy. But Apple will probably assume that it will win, based on the Apple exec's comment.

lol, you know it was the first thing me and my friend thought of when we read about the apple iphone, we just said to each other hey isn't iphone owned by cisco? then we just thought that apple must have bought the name or something cause how could you be so dumb to go taking the name of such an already popular device. anyway. sucked in apple, lol
It's kinda like calling your new operating system Windows

They were negotiating an agreement to allow Apple to use the iPhone name but Apple never signed the final agreement paper. Cisco has no choice but to sue to protect their trademark. Apple's response was that they will fight in court to use the name but I doubt they'll win. Chances are Apple will change iPhone to something stupid like... ApplePhone, just like how they changed iTV to AppleTV.

lol, it's not the only thing.

There's "Apple Records" that the Beatles own, which I think Apple lost in the end, plus there's the ipod copying the same control system that the creative Zen uses, I don't know who one that one.

Apple didn't lose the Beatles thingy, they have an agreement not to go into Music (think that is only 'producing music' otherwise how to explain iPos/iTunes).

They have an agreement with Creative now (e.g. they 'paid' Creative although I think the Apple fanboys will not see it that way)
