A LOT of revisionism going on at the moment.  When I tuned in ESPN this morning, Dick Vitale (?!!) and George Will ("baseball historian") were being interviewed over the phone about Steinbrenner. The Worldwide leader...

Inevitable, to be sure, but nevertheless disappointing.  Steinbrenner did a great many things, including some classic sonavabitch moments that got him kicked out of MLB twice.  The whole truth isn't being reported today, kids...

^ Just re-hearing all the Billy Martin "staged" arguments, he bringing the "You're Fired" before Trump. Hilarious shit.

King George Steinbrenner is dead.  I don't even need to link to anything...

Famous and influential, a domineering force.

RIP Boss.

Whatever his reputation, he brought that Swagga back into a legendary Franchise. Never settles for less. He goes down as one of the great owners I respect, Dr. Buss, Al Davis and George Steinbrenner.

All-Star Game: NL wins first since 1996?!!
« Reply #1503 on: July 14, 2010, 07:13:27 AM »
Got home in time to see the 9th inning.  I guess it was worth it, with that amazing force play -- Big Papi looked awkward and sluggish on the bases.  I've been a National League guy all my life so I'm naturally relieved that this damn losing streak is FINALLY over and done.

^ the day i see papi steal a base i will be laughing, but to be honest, he played it correct in the situation so couldn't blame anyone except for lack of speed

werd on the streak, they had to do it sooner or later

Walk-off celebrations at home plate: now and then

Funny post someone tweeted today about the difference between walk-off home runs today and, oh, sixty years ago: http://photographyblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2010/07/vintage-photo-shows-that-a-wal.html

Matt Garza no-hits Tigers
« Reply #1506 on: July 27, 2010, 09:02:55 AM »

I was following the Matt Garza no-hitter from around the 6th inning when it was still a Fred Toney-Hippo Vaughn affair.  You never know about these things (Armando Gallaraga anyone?) but even tracking the game pitch by pitch, it did have that air of inevitability.

Good for Garza, getting something to match the swagger.  The Padres and Mets remain the only MLB teams to never record a no-hitter.

Garza man! never know who's gonna pull one off.

Cards and Mets going to the distance!!! Love how tight the AL Central is, Royals in striking distance  :thumbup

only in baseball, the world of weird injuries:

The Marlins' Chris Coghlan became the latest casualty of an over-exuberant celebration, injuring his left knee while rushing to plant a shaving-cream pie in the face of Wes Helms after Sunday's walk-off victory

I heard on Jim Rome that all pies have been banned from the clubhouse LOL!

CONGRATS ICHIRO

Ichiro's first-pitch base hit off Toronto Blue Jays starter Shawn Hill with one out in the top of the fifth inning Thursday afternoon gave the Japanese star 200 hits in each of his 10 big-league campaigns.
