Tom Cruise Potentially Reteaming with John Woo for Flying Tigers

John Woo's new World War II film Flying Tigers has been in the works for some time now. The fighter squadron story emerged last December when it was part of a trio of projects that Tom Cruise was circling. Since then John Woo announced that he was making the Christopher McQuarrie and Mason Alley scripted picture his next project, but there's been no further updates. Now that all changes in a packed story from Variety about New Regency's upcoming projects, we almost missed the brief mention that Tom Cruise is attached to Flying Tigers, marking his grand return to the cockpit for the first time since 1986's Top Gun.

ComingSoon also caught up with Woo recently and here's what he had to say about Flying Tigers:

"It's based on a true story in WWII, about a group of American volunteer fighter pilots who worked with the Chinese Air Force fighting with the Japanese and they won the war. Also, it's the story of Clair Chennault, and they did a great contribution for the Chinese, and the Chinese people love and respect them. The whole story is about a friendship between a Chinese and an American and [how] they worked together."

That seems like it might have been a rough translation, but we still get the idea. Aside from being a reunion for Cruise and Woo, writer Christopher McQuarrie also worked with Cruise on last year's Valkyrie, which turned out well. I've always been a fan of high flying battles, and though there have been attempts to bring back some aviation combat action, movies like Flyboys and the futuristic Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow just haven't been up to par. But if this combination of talent actually comes together, I think we're in store for quite an adrenaline rush. As long as Cruise decides to take this on next following Wichita.

John Woo's "Flying Tigers" Comes in IMAX
2010-08-20 16:34:11     CRIENGLISH.com       Web Editor: zhucheng

Director John Woo's latest film "Flying Tigers," set to start shooting this fall, will be released in IMAX format according to the report of Hollywoodreporter.com.

Woo will work with the Creative Artists Agency and IMAX in an effort to bring a larger than life quality to his roughly $90 million 1940s war film which will feature epic aerial battles.

Woo said that he hopes to cast Liam Neeson in the leading role of Chennault. Chinese actor Liu Ye is likely to star opposite Neeson as a trainee pilot in the film.

Liu last appeared in a leading role in Lu Chuan's Nanjing Massacre picture "City of Life and Death" and plays the part of Mao Zedong in the Communist Party of China (CPC) anniversary film "Jian Dang Wei Ye," which is currently in production.

"Flying Tigers" is based on a story well known in China and the US. General Chennault's Flying Tigers squadron flew successful missions around the southwest cities against the raiding Japanese while also transporting supplies to Chinese forces.

"Flying Tigers" is currently in pre-production and will be released in 2011.

By CRI reporter Yang Liu

John Woo's new multi-million dollar martial arts film "Reign of Assassins" set up its official website on Thursday, August 19, and released posters of the twelve leading roles.

Director John Woo, actors Wang Xueqi, Shawn Yue, Leon Dai, Guo Xiaodong and Li Zonghan attended the press conference in Beijing. At the conference, director Woo said he would like to be Jing Ke, a famous assassin during the Warring States period, if he could be a historical martial arts figure.

The upcoming film, budgeted at 14 million dollars, stars Michelle Yeoh, Jung Woo-Sung, Wang Xueqi, Barbie Hsu, Shawn Yue, Kelly Lin, Leon Dai, Paw Hee-Ching, Pace Wu, Guo Xiaodong, Li Zonghan and Jiang Yiyan. The all-star film has popularly been called the "film without a supporting role."

John Woo, praised for his ability to depict the friendship between men in his work, has decided to turn his attention on women. The director explained, "'Reign of Assassins' is not a film that simply focuses on kung-fu and hatred. In fact, it tells a romantic love story.''

However, all his actresses were absent from the conference. When the five main actors were asked about their collaboration with the actresses, , Dai summarized that Michelle Yeoh had strong and tender tempers in the same body, while Barbie Hsu was good at performing and very accurate.

In the posters, the twelve astrological horoscopes are used to describe each character. For instance, Michelle Yeoh, of course, is a Pisces girl, and actor Wang Xueqi belongs to Leo.

At the conference, the five actors were divided into two groups, a group of good guys and a group of bad guys, according to their characters in the film.

The three actors in the group of villains, Wang Xueqi, Leon Dai and Shawn Yue, described their combination as a cleaning company, which takes charge of killing aliens. They also showed off their own weapons, such as sword, double blades and a pair of long chopsticks.

The film will be released nationwide on September 28.

John Woo Honored in Venice
2010-09-04 10:50:06     Xinhua       Web Editor: Zhang Jin

Venice Film Festival artistic director Marco Mueller said that telling Chinese filmmaker John Woo he would be presented with the venerable festival's Golden Lion career honor had all the drama of one of Woo's films.

"At first, he said 'No, no, no, I don't deserve it,'" Mueller recalled Friday during a briefing for the award. "It took a lot of deep convincing from me and [long-time Woo collaborator] Terence Chang. But I don't feel we are bestowing an honor here. The prize was simply there waiting for him."

With Friday's award, Woo joins the ranks of the cinema industry giants who have won the award before him, including Orson Wells, Igmar Bergman, Luis Buuel, Akira Kurosawa, Federico Fellini, Francis Ford Coppola, Steven Spielberg, and Stanley Kubrick.

The career Golden Lion prize has been presented to 80 people before this year, but Friday is the first time a Chinese figure has been so honored.

"When Marco called me, my first reaction was shock," Woo told reporters. "Then I thought he might be joking. Then I felt emotional, and finally I was just grateful."

The 63-year-old Woo -- best known for his 1987 classic A Better Tomorrow and The Killer two years later -- said he dedicated the Golden Lion prize to his mother, who he said was the first person to take him to the cinema and who encouraged him to follow his cinematic dreams, and to fellow director Cheh Chang, Woo's mentor, who died eight years ago at the age of 79.

Woo was officially presented the prize in a black tie ceremony several hours after the briefing in Venice's sold-out Palazzo del Cinema, just before the world premiere of Reign of Assassins, the thriller Woo co-directed with Chao-Bin Su. Terence Chang is the producer of the film, which tells the story of a skilled assassin in ancient China.

The Reign of Assassins is Woo's third film -- following epics Red Cliff and Red Cliff II -- since Woo returned to China two years ago, after making films exclusively in Hollywood for more than 15 years, where blockbuster titles to his credit include " Broken Arrow," "Face/Off," and "Mission Impossible 2."

"I learned a lot in my years in Hollywood, and I wanted to bring what I learned back to Asia," Woo said. All three films he has made since his return blend aspects of Chinese and Hollywood traditions, according to Woo.

On Friday, he said his respect for both Chinese and Hollywood filmmaking makes him a natural ambassador for each culture to the other.

"I want to be like a bridge between cultures," Woo said. "I want to link the best from east and west in my work. I'm back in China now, but I'm not done working in Hollywood. I want to keep working in both places."

He said future projects will include his first IMAX film " Flying Tigers," a Hollywood-style remake of his award winning Chinese action film The Killer, and another remake, of the 1967 French classic "Le Samourai," originally made by Jean-Paul Melville.

This is Woo's fourth trip to Venice. He has never had a film screen in competition at the world's oldest film festival, but he was the head of the festival's 2004 "Secret History of Asian Film" initiative, he directed one of the three episodes of "All the Invisible Children," which screened out of competition in the festival in 2006, and he was the producer behind Alexi Tan's Blood Brothers, the closing film in Venice the following year.

The 67th Venice Film Festival, which called Friday "John Woo Day," got underway Wednesday and will conclude Sept. 11.

"Reign of Assassins" Premieres in Hangzhou
2010-09-15 16:09:10     CRIENGLISH.com       Web Editor: zhucheng

Director John Woo's new swordsman film, "Reign of Assassins," billed as a "five-star commercial swordsmen film," premiered and held a press conference in Hangzhou on Tuesday, September 14, m1905.com reports.

Woo, lead actor Wang Xueqi, Barbie Hsu, Li Zonghan and Woo's daughter Angeles, who is also in the film, attended.

Wang Xueqi gave a surprising performance as the bad guy in this film, a rare appearance among his previous films. His fight scenes are also surprisingly good and won high praise from audiences.

"We saw a different Wang in this film. I admire his spirit of self-challenge," said a viewer.

Another of Wang's highlights in the film is his relationship with Barbie Hsu's character. Moviegoers said they were taken aback at the age difference - Wong is 64 and Hsu is 34 - but the previews prove the love story is well done.

Viewers said although "Reign of Assassins" is a swordsman film, it gets off the beaten track of bloody fighting, showing the natural and genuine sides of the swordsmen.

Wang Xueqi has been well-known to Chinese audiences for his role as a hero in military films and TV dramas. He won the best actor award at the Asian Film Awards this year for "Bodyguards and Assassins" (2009).

"Reign of Assassins" will hit Chinese cinemas on Sept. 28, 2010.

John Woo Launches Animated Series Online

Filmmaker John Woo and a poster of the graphic novel "Seven Brothers" [File Photo: CFP/yeedou.com]

World-renowned Chinese filmmaker John Woo has released an Internet-based animated series that is adapted from the graphic novel "Seven Brothers" that he co-created.

The first four episodes of the 13-episode series are now available on Machinima, an online video entertainment network which registers more than one billion views per month via its YouTube channel, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

New episodes of "Seven Brothers" will be distributed every two weeks.

Woo created the original graphic novel with comics writer Garth Ennis and artist Jeevan J. Kang. The story is set 600 years ago, showing how mighty Chinese treasure fleets set sail to reach every continent and how these voyages of discovery left behind an evil legacy as well as a plot by a powerful sorcerer to dominate the world. Now, in modern-day Los Angeles, an ancient prophecy must be fulfilled and seven men, with nothing in common but their destinies, must save the world.

Woo collaborated with Liquid Comics and Tiger Hill Entertainment in launching the Web series.
