Personal Video Game Rankings
« on: December 04, 2017, 03:52:33 PM »
This is a centralized thread for your favorite game rankings. All sorts of rankings are welcome, you may use my styles or make your own.

We've had a few specific ranking threads here and there but I figured we could use one where you can customize your rankings a bit or steal whatever ideas others have.

Ideas:

- Top 5 to N games on every system / specific system
- Top games by release year (see below)
- Top games by genre/theme/mood
- Best exploration games / games with best world building  -shirenu
- Best Final Fantasy games  -shirenu
- Best butts in games

etc, feel free to suggest more.

One day I was thinking about all the games I've played during my long, looooong life and was trying to think of a way to list all my favorites. Then I figured listing them by release year might make the whole arduous process a little easier and a little bit more interesting. I've listed as many favorite games per year as I can, then I've tried to decide which one is my absolute favorite for each year.

I've been almost solely a computer gamer, so all my fave games tend to be c64/amiga/pc. I've left out some console (mainly just NDS) games that might make this list, I'll think about those separately.

So here's my current list, I'll update it as I do more research down the memory lane. Absolute favorite game in bold, several/none bolded if I just can't decide (or haven't decided yet):

Thoughts and elaborations on some choices:

1980 - Rogue
My dad worked with computers back in the 80's, and by that I mean massive, huge, noisy computers. I played Rogue back in the later eighties on his laptop, or perhaps it was at the computer room on a terminal, I forget exactly. But it was surely an impactful experience, as I went on to play numerous Roguelike games during the following years.

1983 - Blue Max
This is my go-to answer when people ask me what my fave C64 game is. It's a Zaxxon-esque triplane game with bombing, shooting and varied zones that change based on your own success. Still a great, fun game to fire up on an emulator now and then.

1985 - Paradroid
You play a lowly droid that has the ability to take control of other, stronger droids via a mini-game. Simple, yet pretty difficult and fun. Another timeless classic, I still play it on occasion on a c64 emulator.

1987 - Dungeon Master
Dungeon Master was ahead of its time and a pioneer of the dungeon crawling genre. The immersion, real-time combat and movement, devious but logical puzzles... Still an amazing experience to this day. If you insist on a modernized version, play Legend of Grimrock 1 & 2.

1988 - Samurai Warrior: The Battles of Usagi Yojimbo
This was a c64 game based on a comic book... a fun samurai romp with ninjas disguised as beggars, a karma system (if you did too many dishonorable things, you commit seppuku automatically) and some cool details (like failing to bow to someone might just make them angry as shit).

1989 - Simcity
I played Simcity first on c64, then Amiga, then a PC... man, they released it for everything. And it was all great.

1990 - The Secret of Monkey Island
One of the funniest games of all time.

1991 - Civilization
Wait, where did the weekend go?

1992 - Star Control 2
The definitive space opera of yore, SC2 combined a fun combat system with superb space exploration and writing. The characters and dialogue are easily still some of the best found in games. SC2 has been re-made to work with modern computers as Ur-Quan Masters, which is completely legal and free. I still play and finish it every few years.

1994 - UFO: Enemy Unknown
You've probably seen this on many "best of all time" lists, and let me tell you, it's not exaggeration. Everything about this game was just amazing. I've been aching to try the reboot and its sequel, but I doubt they can match the effect the original game had on me back in the day. It was that great.

2000 - Deus Ex
I actually finished Deus Ex maybe a decade after it was released. How well it still held up says a lot about how great this game was. There were so many different ways to get things done, I was pretty blown away. It really felt like the devs had thought of absolutely everything.

2001 - ?
Man, this was a weird year. I can't seem to find a single game released this year that I played and really liked. Needs more research, or maybe I just have to... play some of them!

I'll add a ranking of my own, my top 5 Overwatch characters!

5. D.Va

Hana Song is one of the most fun characters to play as as her boost ability allows her to fly anywhere for a spell and she's only gotten better since launch with her defense matrix and missile ability. I guess my issue is that for a tank she's kind of squishy but I just need to get better at being more mobile with her. She's way up there as the cutest character in the game (close competition from Tracer and Mei though)

4. Lucio

I like playing as support and even though I really thought I played Zenyatta or Mercy more, it's actually Lucio I've spent the most time with. Easy to see why, his group heal or speed boost is vital, grinding on walls gives me a Jet Set Radio vibe and his ability to boop players off the map is never not funny. His constant positivity is also great to have, I sorely need it after some of the team mates I'm paired with...

3. Pharah

Very much a situational character, I wouldn't play as her without a Mercy in the team for protection, but nailing some rockets down on enemies, especially direct hits, is the best feeling in the game. She also has the best ultimate line in the game with "JUSTICE RAINS FROM ABOVE!!". She's pretty stoic as a character, but I like that about her.

2. Zarya

I actually don't mind playing the objective (wish my teammates did) so I like to play as Zarya, the tank hero that can also take on a more support-type role, and that makes her really important. Her graviton surge ultimate—which is perfect for pairing up with other ultimates— has come in so handy. Getting the meter on her gun to charge to 100 is tricky to manage but once you do, she's one of the strongest characters as her laser melts faces off.

1. Soldier 76

Love to play as the resident dad of the group. The big constant damage dealer is especially effective against those players with mobility. Also self sustaining enough to heal himself and others with the bionic field. I'd say he's the character I'm most effective with.

So hard to narrow it down to 5, honestly! Junkrat, Roadhog, Sombra, Moira and Tracer would round out my top 10 probably.

I think I'll do games while I was alive! I did play some older games too when I was a kid, but nothing older than Pac-Man I think.

1982 - Digdug - MADMAX

1983 - Mario Bros. - I would say Dragon's Lair as well but I've never actually played it.

1984 - BoulderDash - I only just now got the pun, hahaha, but I owned this on NES!

1985 - Super Mario Bros. - My first videogame, I got it from my Grandma & Grandpa, my Mother was worried I was being spoiled and videogames would wreck my life...she was right!
I like many others pressed up instead of A and died on the first Goomba and immediately raged, good times. I didn't get it when it was new, though.
Hang-On - Even if the bikes were super loose by the time I played this game, it was still really exciting :D

1986 - The Legend of Zelda - I played this so, so much. I had the gold cart, a cool Nintendo strategy guide, everything. Why oh why did I sell it and my NES? :(
Out-Run - The music is so memorable, and I still play it to this day! I also used to get free rides on the deluxe moving cabinet at my Mum's old work, I'm pretty sure I was reunited with the cabinet this year at a gaming expo I went to, but they lowered the timer so it was impossible to get past level 2 :(
Metroid - Didn't actually play it through until later in life though.

1987 - After Burner 1 & 2 - That rotating cockpit <3 but it did suck money from you because it was not an easy game at all :D I even played the R360 version once, which literally empties your pockets by turning you upside down. The music is also sexy as hell.
Megaman - I didn't own it or beat it when it was out, but later I did. (with save states because it's SO HARD)
Double Dragon - my friends and I would just play VS mode because the graphic were better, pick Abobo and run at full speed into each other, over and over.
Street Fighter - I played this in the 90's around the time when SF2 came out, it still had the huge punch button you had to actually punch! ... I think I may have played this because all the SF2 machines were busy XD

1988 - Megaman 2 - best music, best Megaman!!
Super Mario 2 - I got this for Christmas one year, I was so happy :D
Double Dragon II - I don't think I ever finished this one either, but yes, it's the best one :D
Chase HQ - This is Nancy at Chase Headquarters, I played this on Amiga or Atari ST I think, I played it in 2016 at a retro arcade in Tokyo, it was great!

1989 - Final Fight - An all time classic and I wish I had played it in the arcades, but I never saw it around for some reason? The SNES version is good! but it's crippled sadly.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Arcade - I loved this so much, as a kid the cabinet looked HUGE and 4 people could play at once, it was when the cartoon show was huge and the movie was coming out..aaaaaa. the game itself was crazy with great graphics, effects and everything. PIZZA TIME
Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles NES - This is possibly the worst game ever but I still foolishly plugged away at it because I loved the turtles and thought I could beat the game one day (I never could)
Tetris (Game Boy) - I got this with my Gameboy I think, still the best one :D

I'll do the 90's later!

Personally for me there are:
Fortnite - it's very popular game nowadays and I'm really not surprised that it is at the top of the list here.
Minecraft - was a game of my childhood
League of Legends  - one of my favorite games, because it doesn't require too much investment of your time but which will really give you maximum game value.
NFS - also is  a game of my childhood
That's all)
Like online games, then read river belle casino review and try to play
