[Discuss] Korean Scandals
« on: April 22, 2010, 01:52:16 AM »
One of the first things things that helped Allkpop launch with a bang was that it jsut so happened that we opened when there was a scandal. Who doesn't love celebrity scandals, especially when it's an uncommon one? It might as well be part of their entertainment resume because it sure as hell is juicy. Today, scandals may no longer include lewd activities, but more along the lines of Party X suing Party Y and sometimes- it's just not the same.

The first scandal was Ivy's! Her rumored sex tape in 2007 was a BIG topic because before her, the only really big sex scandal was Baek Ji Young's and there wasn't a sex tape involved. You can't really count Hyori and Rain's sex scandal because that was quickly brushed under the rug... But that's another story.

SO! Allkpop lead the whole scandal bandwagon about there being a sex tape and it being released (yeah, we strung people along quite often back then. marketing is marketing!)... And finally, today, we see the three year long scandal nearing it's end as it's been 90% confirmed!

Ivy is caught.

Quote from: allkpop 2010/4/21
A shocking report has just been sent in, and yes, it’s scandalous! A singer, anonymously known as “A,” has once stopped her activities in the past due to an unfortunate scandal. She is creating yet another buzz online for having her sex video finally leaked.

Since last weekend, a file – with its title revealing the star’s identity – began to spread online like wildfire. The file apparently contains a video of that celebrity, engaging in sexual intercourse with an unknown man. Because the video clip has been recorded portrait and not the typical landscape, it is highly likely that it was shot using a phone camera.

In a phone interview with MoneyToday Star News on the 21st, a representative of “A”’s company stated, “After watching the sex tape, we approached “A” directly and asked her if she was the girl in the video. “A” replied that it is 100% not her.”

The representative added, “If you look closely at the video, anyone will be able to easily see that it is indeed not “A”. “

Of course, final conclusions can’t be made just yet. However, after watching the sex tape for themselves, netizens are certain that “A” is none other than singer Ivy.

As many already know, Ivy has once been engulfed by a scandal a couple years ago that involved ex-boyfriend and model by the name of “Yoo.” He had blackmailed Ivy with an alleged sex tape for an amount of $45,000. Although no such tape ever surfaced, the scandal caused Ivy to step away from her career as a singer indefinitely. Meanwhile, “Yoo” was sentenced to one year in jail and two years on probation.

I gotta say, it's quite interesting for me since I've been following Kpop scandals for quite some time now hahah.

Which Kpop scandals do you favor remember?

Even if it was her, she'd still say that it wasn't.

I'm not a big fan of things that are "scandalous" in the media, just because of how they get reported.  Shit gets blown out of proportion, and twisted around and stuff.  Korean media or otherwise.

Oh. Isn't the latest scandal of 37 celebrity involved in prostitution? Google "korean sex scandal" if you don't know what I'm talking about.

The song, no. It's just a bunch of nonsensical words put together though the concept of dressing up like Native Americans, the teepees, and waving their hands against their mouths yelling "yayaya" etc, is pretty squicky.

Though this is more on the fault of their choreographer/stylist/whoever the heck approved this.

Still a banging song though.

I guess so, since most girl group don't really make their own music concept and just do what they're told. i never really thought T-ara was racist.

Never really thought this song was racist. That's like calling MM's Happy Summer Wedding, Koi no Dance Site, among others racist. They're just fun songs imo.

^ I remember this T-ara thing from a while ago. Anyways, in my own words, I couldn't convey why some we're upset by it, but I came across an informative post.
Quote
The producers of YaYaYa are using a stereotype of First Nation people that was largely developed by Hollywood movies and TV shows between the 1920’s and 1960’s; one that persists today. [3] These are harmful, because if you absorb them they will form a pre-understanding and set of judgments about First Nation groups that you overlay on them without really either knowing or understanding them as real humans.

Since the “Indian” stereotype developed largely out of programs focusing on the Old West in the United States, these images do not represent the cultural diversity found among First Nations. [4] It is an imaginary mixture of motifs from the cultures of various groups. It doesn’t represent the cultures of other nations outside of the American West, yet when people think of “Indians,” this one set of traits is the common picture, due to mass media. If the nations that are closest to this stereotype don’t appreciate it, imagine how much less others think of it!

Sadly, stereotypes are based on a slice of reality. Did some First Nations use teepees? Sure. Did everyone use them? No. Did a First Nation ever tie anyone to a post? Yes. Did everyone do this? No. Do any First Nations use a hand and mouth war cry pattern? Yes. Did they all? No. Did any of them dress in ways similar to T-ara? Yes. Did they all? No. In all the ways that YaYaYa portrays First Nation culture, the majority of these groups did not act that way. Only some did and, even then, the way it is being portrayed is still stereotyped.

It doesn't have that much to do with racism, but with cultural appropriation...

Example from the wiki article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cultural_appropriation):

"A common sort of cultural appropriation is the adoption of the iconography of another culture." --> "When these artifacts are regarded as objects that merely "look cool", or when they are mass produced cheaply as consumer kitsch, people who venerate and wish to preserve their indigenous cultural traditions may be offended."

Now, this example was about more concrete products, but I think using stereotypical images of a certain culture to promote a pop music product just because it "looks cool" certainly counts as cultural appropriation.

A lot of people don't realize or think of it as a problem, but it really can be offensive and spread stereotypes and that makes it a problem.

Kind of off topic, but when I listen to YaYaYa, I imagine them in a steampunk setting instead. And now it seems their next MV will have steampunky elements. Go figure
