'Buddha Mountain' to Be in Theaters on March 4

The release date of the Chinese movie "Buddha Mountain" ("Guan Yin Shan") will be March 4. The announcement was made by director Li Yu and lead actors Fan Bingbing and Berlin Chen at a press conference in Beijing on Thursday, January 20, Mtime.com reports.

Four posters and a 30-second trailer were released during the event.

Actress Fan Bingbing plays a rock singer, who fails her college entrance exam and has to sing in bars for a living. The role helped Fan win a best actress award at the 23rd Tokyo Film Festival last year.

Fan praised her second collaboration with director Li Yu. She said the film helped her develop a new way of acting. "During the time we shot the film, I felt I was not myself anymore; I was the rock singer Nan Feng. Only in Li's film, I can challenge such roles as bar singer or massage girl."

Fan Bingbing Likely to Land Role in Co-Production

Chinese actress Fan Bingbing has been invited to play the lead in a Chinese-French co-produced film about a wartime love story, Xinhua news agency reports.

Producers from China and France signed a contract in Paris on Wednesday, January 26, 2011 to make the film, "First Love" (in Chinese "Qing Dou Chu Kai"), during the ongoing Chinese Movie Festival in France.

The producers said they were approaching Fan, as well as French actor Nicolas Duvauchelle, for the movie.

Set in 1950 near the China-Vietnam border, the story centers on the romance between a French soldier and a Chinese girl that ends up in tragedy.

The movie will be shot with a budget of 6.6 million Euros (about US$9 million) in locations in China and France.

It is one of several projects announced in the wake of the signing of a co-production treaty by China and France in April of 2010.

If both Fan and Duvauchelle agree to sign onto the film, it will be their second collaboration after the film "Stretch", which opened in France earlier this month.

The inaugural Chinese Movie Festival in France opened in Paris on January 25 with an opening ceremony attended by Chinese actor-director Jiang Wen and French actor Jean Reno. The festival, running until February 8, will screen 12 Chinese films including Feng Xiaogang's tearjerker, "Aftershock", and Hu Mei's biopic drama, "Confucius".

Fan Bingbing Believes in 'Buddha Mountain'

Actress Fan Bingbing has no doubt, she says, that her new film, "Buddha Mountain" will easily gross several hundred million yuan.

Staying neutral in a single grey suit, Fan looked flamboyant at the movie's premiere on Thursday, February 24, 2011. The event also attracted male lead Berlin Chen and director Li Yu.

Fan, the Best Actress winner for her role at the 23rd Tokyo International Film Festival last year, shared at the premiere that she has special affinity for the film and will probably not fit into the same role two years later.

"Buddha Mountain" charts the stories of three teenage drop-outs, Ding Bo (Berlin Chen), Nan Feng (Fan Bingbing) and Fei Zao (Fei Long), and their middle-aged landlord, a retired Peking opera singer (Sylvia Chang) who has lost her son in a car accident. The film revolves around the foursome as they clash on values, romance and the generation gap. It is a film about youth and dreams, love lost and found, wildness and zest.

As pointed out by the production team on site, "Buddha Mountain" is not an art-house film. It is targeted for people born in the 1980s and 90s.

Fan Bingbing Workshop, her studio, also one of the distributors, will do the promotional work for the film, said the report.

Let's wish Fan Bingbing good luck. Slated release on March 4 may propel the film to be a dark horse as few other competitive works will go onscreen that time in the mainland cinema market.
