Close-up of info on the handshake and 2-shot events. Looks like they will be held in Osaka and you have to purchase the theater edition of the album for the application tickets. The theater edition will be up for preorder starting tomorrow 6PM JST while the preorders for the limited and regular editions (regardless of type) will start today 3.30PM JST.

Since numerous people have asked, I'll post what information I know here about buying handshake tickets/theatre editions - BIG DISCLAIMER please note I've not gone to one myself but have gone through most of the process, but that was a year ago, other people are more well-informed than me as have gone recently. I'm just writing this as as far as I know no-one else has and some good friends of mine on this forum have asked...

If you don't know Japanese, use google translate - or, even easier, Chrome which has auto-translate as a built-in option so you can view the website with translated text - this should get you by 90% of the time. You'll probably need to know how to write your name in katakana - and, depending on website, they may want it in full-width instead of normal half-width characters - again, google is your friend, but get someone who can read katakana to check how you write your name - this is important as each ticket is printed with your name (should include your English name) and they do ID checks on entry. (Please check the end of this post about addresses as this is of utmost importance, unlike AKB48 Group Ticket Centre accounts)
The Theatre Edition for this album will be sold in three ways:
1. With a 2-shot ticket for a particular member in a particular timeslot on a particular day. This also comes with a random collectable photo. This is sold in rounds 1-7.
2. With a 2-shot ticket for an unspecified member - basically on the day, for any member which does not have sold out slots you can present this ticket and get a 2-shot. Please note, most popular members sell out all slots for handshake events - see for example this post which shows how many slots are sold out for each girl for sales rounds 1-4 for AKB's 34th single: http://forum.jphip.com/index.php?topic=36368.msg1234113#msg1234113. (http://forum.jphip.com/index.php?topic=36368.msg1234113#msg1234113.) This option also comes with a random collectable photo. This option is only sold in round 8.
3. This comes with 3 random collectable photos but no handshake or 2-shot tickets.
As mentioned, there are 8 rounds of sales. Each round has a specific timescale and application rules - these get quite complicated. You can see these on the left hand column on the website.
For example, round 1 is open from 25th November 18:00 JST till 27th November 13:00 JST. In this round you can apply for tickets in 3 timeslots, one application per timeslot, and each of the three timeslots has to be a different member.
In future rounds you can apply for multiple tickets per timeslot and can apply for more members. And generally, in later rounds, you can apply for more tickets in general. They do this to try and let as many people as possible get tickets for the most popular members such as Oshima Yuko who tends to sell out all handshake tickets within the first two rounds.
Once you have an account and are logged in you apply for tickets buy clicking the big pink button on the main page:

Then scroll down, tick the tickbox and click the big pink button

Note that for AKB48 releases, ALL members (and kenkyuusei) for AKB48, SKE48, NMB48, and HKT48 are available to buy a handshake (or, in this case, 2-shot) with.
The dates and venues of the events are given on the main chara-ani page, in this case:

The timeslots are also given on the main page, in this case:

You then check the rules and apply for the timeslots you want. So, if I did the following:

Then, I would (according to round 1 rules) be applying for Takamina on the 3rd May in slot 2, Yui on the 3rd May in slot 2, and Mayuyu on the 3rd May in slot 6. You can have applications covering any dates and teams/members, as long as they are within the rules for that round.
You then hit the big pink button etc and it will ask you to confirm etc.
Now here's the hard part for foreign fans:
If you win tickets, then basically you wait for all the rounds to end to pay your bill. There are multiple methods, including "cash on delivery", payment at a convenience store, and also, payment by credit card. Please note that they may not accept your credit card, this seems a bit hit and miss on Japanese website as far as I know. You can check the FAQ for more (the menu options including FAQ, appeared different for some reason when I was logged in or out, and I could only access the FAQ when I was logged out, so try that if you are stuck...)
Secondly, shipping of the CDs is not initially included in the price of the CD - the FAQ gives more details on that. But each and every ticket has the member name, timeslot and YOUR NAME. They do ID checks at the venue and at each handshake lane, so you cannot resell but need individual applications. The only delivery addresses they accept are within Japan. They deliver the tickets (with the CDs and collectable photos) the day before the stated CD release date (sometimes there is a second shipment later in the week, hence a bump in sales charts if you follow those). If you do not collect or pay for your tickets, then they go into a resale round much later on. There may be some danger if you don't pay/collect your tickets, you may enter a so-called "blacklist".
I can't help further as I've never won any tickets, last time I didn't have a contact in Japan to collect tickets for me and the time before, I missed round 1 and Mayuyu only had limited slots in round 2 and I didn't win those so didn't apply for any other girls.
As to the above poster, I've never known anyone to use FromJapan or Tenso, only people who have used actual contacts in Japan to collect the tickets for them, and then pass them on in person, either at the event or beforehand. I don't know whether it is possible, when I last applied, you couldn't use credit cards to pay so back then you also had to rely on a contact in Japan to do the payment for you.

On December 21, AKB48 held their last handshake event for the year at Yokohama Stadium, and there, they revealed the title of their upcoming 5th album would be "Tsugi no Ashiato."
Additionally, they unveiled their new artist photo as well as the cover jacket for the album.
The catch-phrase for the upcoming album is "Our footprints are ahead of us", and there will be 4 different types.
Limited edition Type-A (2CD+1DVD), regular edition Type-A (2CD), Type-B (2CD), and theater edition (1CD).

Reportedly, 15 new songs have been written for the album. There will also be many unit songs. For instance, a song called "Boy Hunt no Houhou Oshiemasu" is sung by AKB48's Shimazaki Haruka, SKE48's Kizaki Yuria, NMB48's (and AKB48) Yagura Fuuko, and HKT48's Sashihara Rino.
It was also revealed that the DVD (approximately 90 mins long) which will come with a limited edition Type-A, will contain all 257 members' "air handshake event" footage in which the viewers can experience as if they are attending the handshake event.
AKB48's 5th album "Tsugi no Ashiato" is set for release on January 22.

I can do the katakana version of my name, but the site won't allow the input of an English name. As I have a Chinese name too (that's shown on ID etc. where my name is in full), I can write it in kanji, but it's not shown in kanji on any of my ID, just in English alphabet. :?
Sorry for the late response, but if you have entered your name in katakana, then they can read check that against the English written on your ID, that should be fine, as I've heard of people who just enter their name in katakana everywhere even though it's in English on all their ID.

I can do the katakana version of my name, but the site won't allow the input of an English name. As I have a Chinese name too (that's shown on ID etc. where my name is in full), I can write it in kanji, but it's not shown in kanji on any of my ID, just in English alphabet. :?
Sorry for the late response, but if you have entered your name in katakana, then they can read check that against the English written on your ID, that should be fine, as I've heard of people who just enter their name in katakana everywhere even though it's in English on all their ID.
Cheers for the response and no problem. As it stands, I'm just registered with Fan Club and Ticket Center, former with kanji / katakana name and latter with English / katakana name. I'm guessing it's okay to link the two then, given that my name appears the same in katakana for both? Not that I'd be able to make it to Tokyo very easily anyway. :nervous

04 Tsuyoi Hana on Disc 1 is pretty sweet! Can't remembering hearing this at the time So Long released.
10 Watashitachi no Reason - Can't go wrong with songs like this. Let's rock out and wotagei!
01 After rain - Bit generic, nice solo
02 Gugutasu no Sora - Nice soft easy listening feel, but forgettable.
03 Boy Hunt no Houhou Oshiemasu - This reminds me of Samui Kara Fuyu Da mon! Total Xmas song lol.
04 JJ no Karitamono - Hate it, not my style at all. JEH JEH. lol
05 Shower no Ato Dakara - Total Je t'aime rip-off. It's sorta lol-worthy, but it's not for me.
06 10 Krone to Pan - YokoYamamoto becoming a trademark sound lately. Song is a bit strange, but I like it.
07 Kakushin ga Moterumono - Another typical song, but I quite like it. Should be awesome during concerts.
08 Team Zaka - lol, same comments as the previous song. Very generic, but why change what works.
09 Tsuyosa to Yowasa no Aida de - Boring.
10 Boku wa Ganbaru - Boring.
11 Eien Yori Tsuzuku You ni - Also very generic, I swear I heard this before. Oh wait, I did. EP coupling, haha.
01 Smile Kami Kakushi - Tentoumu Chu can do better. Song is a bit flat.
02 Tanin Gyougi na Sunset Beach - The fishers get a beach song. Rofl.
04 Watashi Leaf - AnRiRe + J... You'd expect these super pushed members to get a better song.
05 Stoic na Bigaku - I hate it when after a cheesy guitar solo intro the song falls flat. Unmemorable.
07 Ichi Ni no San - This is pretty decent.
08 Kyohansha - Meh.
09 Douki - A Paruru solo ballad... No thanks.
10 Kanashiki Kinkyori Renai - This is not what you expect from Team B. Give me something cheerful.
11 Yume no Kawa - Another depressing ballad.
15 Chireba Inoni - More depressing ballads. Do not want.
For hardened AKB48 fans this album doesn't really offer much exciting news, but considering it also includes their latest singles it definitely makes a nice package. Reading back I've been quite negative, but I wouldn't mind owning a copy tbh.
If there is one that strikes me it is that Type A is massively superior to Type B... :O2

AKB48's latest original album 'Tsugi no Ashiato' (went on sale on January 22) sold 962,000 copies in the first week, topping Oricon's weekly ranking.
This is the first time in 5 years and 2 months for an album to sell over 900,000 copies during the first week since EXILE's best-of album "EXILE BALLAD BEST" accomplished it by selling 944,000 copies.
Also, this album allowed AKB48 to become the 2nd female group to sell their album over 900,000 copies in the first week as it has been achieved only by SPEED with their album "RISE" (sold 1,318,000 copies in the first week) back in 1998.
"Tsugi no Ashiato" is the group's 3rd consecutive chart-topping album (4th in total) followed by "Koko ni Ita Koto" (released in June 2011) and "1830m" (released in August 2011), but this marked their best first week sales album.

The total sales number of AKB48's 5th album "Tsugi no Ashiato" (went on sale on January 22) reached 1,001,000 copies when including the sales --1,351 copies-- from February 6.
This marked their 2nd consecutive million-selling album.
They achieved it 16 days after the album went on sale, and it is the fastest record for the group's history (for albums), as their previous album "1830m" reached a million copies 33 days later from the release day.
This is the first time in 6 years and 8 months for a female artist to have 2 consecutive million-selling albums, since it was last accomplished by Koda Kumi in 2007, and for a female group, it is the first time in over 15 years.
Takahashi Minami made a comment, "We are very happy, and grateful to you fans that we were able to reach a million copies. Thank you very much. All of us members realize how we need to continue trying our best in order for us to respond your support."
"Tsugi no Ashiato" contains the group's 7 previous singles, as well as many new songs. During the first week, it sold 962,000 copies which was the best record for the group.
