@cisda: at this point let the web tangle up the characters
Chapter 7Few days had passed and I began to wonder about Sayaka. Calmly, I approached her but she would turn away like an angry wife. She was well-knowledgeable about the people but this wasn’t her and I placed my hand on top of her.
“I will seek the truth.” I said with a calm tone.
“Until then, you can go to work.” She replied as she threw the blanket over her head.
I left the apartment with the thoughts of Yuki spreading in my mind like poison. Questions came more than answers but why is Sayaka being secretive about Yuki? Was there anything I did to make her feel that way? I can’t say I love her but she has a sensual side that would drive many people crazy. Could lust drive my soul into the depths of hell?
It couldn’t be answered but the flower shop looked busy when I entered, seeing the men picking up bouquets for White Day. Sliding through the crowd, Kyoko and Mayu were busy running back and forth from the back. I stepped in between the two and did the transfers seamlessly as they fought through the rush. An hour later, we conquered the rush and took a break.
“You’re late.” Mayu commented as Kyoko looked at the schedule.
“She was on time. You weren’t ready for the rush.” Kyoko replied back.
“I should have come earlier.”
Mayu held her finger out, pointing straight at me when Miichan walked in with a purse over her shoulder. The long black hair would have tricked me if I didn’t notice it earlier and grabbed a small bouquet of flowers from the plastic vase.
“Sae, what are you doing here?”
“I work here.”
“Ahh, well if you don’t mind ringing this up.” She looked away adjusting the hat on her head.
“How is Mariko?” I asked as my fingers punched in the price.
“I can never win her over.” She said with a defeated tone. “Haruna is a rival yet Yuko doesn’t know about their relationship.”
“Yet Acchan and Kai are doing well?”
“They are inseparable. Acchan has good friends too that prevent her from even leaving although Kai working with Itano is trouble ready to explode at any time.”
I wanted clamp my lips but something was digging at the truth of the three next door. “How is Yuko taking it?”
“Oshiriko.” Mayu mumbled.
“I didn’t see you there Mayu. Don’t tell nee-chan about that or I’ll tell people about your relationship with Yuki.”
Mayu glanced over at me as I returned the glance and handed off the bouquet over to her. Miichan took it in her hands and hugged the flowers near her. “Anyways, I might return tonight.”
“I’ll see you then.” I said with my mind fogged up with the issues.
Kyoko confirmed I had the late shift that night and took off early to venture the town. Walking with my hands in my pocket, I decided for an early dinner and walked into the ramen restaurant with few people and took a seat near the wall. Noodles were quick for me and looking over the menu the waitress came up from behind.
“What do you want?”
“Sayaka?”
“I wonder when you would even come here to eat.” She said in a sarcastic tone.
“Miso ramen please.”
“I’ll get two.”
Before I could ask, Sayaka walked away with the order. Another woman came to drop off two glasses of water and I placed one to my right leaving the other one across of my glass. My thoughts were becoming bothersome until the hot bowl came in front of me and Sayaka took the seat across of me.
“You came at a good time.”
“Why do you say that?”
“Ramen is free for employees and one guest.”
“Arigatou!” I yelled towards the kitchen.
“Anyways, you are out of the loop for knowing Yuki.” Sayaka took a slurp of her noodles.
“Even if I knew about her, I would find the best in her.”
“Your attitude is naïve but if you want to get hurt, be my guest.”
“You are starting to piss me off.” I commented as I took a bunch of noodles and stuffed it into my mouth.
“Am I? I think you know why.”
“Jealous?” I replied as Sayaka’s eyes slanted towards me. “I like you as a roommate but even if you tell me she killed a person, I would find something in her to like. You are a generous person but if you don’t tell me the truth, I would take back my words.” I threatened as Sayaka lowered her chopsticks.
“She is… a lady of the night.” Sayaka breathed.
“What do you mean?”
“She is prized by many in the red light district but comes here to distract attention.” Sayaka tipped the bowl toward her mouth with soup smoothly going down her throat.
“What does that mean?”
“I know you aren’t that stupid.” She commented. “She is a prostitute.”
“I see.”
Such a dirty profession but people needed to make money. The clouds opened up to the rain of truth that came with the storm. In a way, my heart didn’t pump as quick but I was curious to see how she approached it. I quickly finished the noodles leaving the soup.
“I won’t look at her differently.” I smiled.
“I don’t blame you but I wanted to be truthful by you seeing it yourself but don’t expect anything if you start following her tonight.”
“I’ll be back late anyways.” I said as placed 200 yen tip by the bowl. “Thank you for the meal.”
I entered through the back where the alcohol was stored. No one would usually be in the back before service and took inventory of the supply. After confirming the deliveries, I peeked outside to see Kyoko and Mayu talking in the middle of the room. I pulled my head back and took a seat on the crate to get a little shut eye. Upon my fluttering eyelids, I heard a ruckus near the door. I placed my ear near the door and tried to understand the conversation on the other side.
Where’s black widow? The noise level was quite high for the evening. I carefully leaned in again and the tossing of metal in the alleyway was giving way to the noise within the club. Going back to the crate, the door collapsed with two men fighting. Both were heavy set men with many tattoos. I stood still watching the event unfold in front of me when police came in and dragged the two away.
“Sorry for the people barging in like that.”
“It was no problem but someone has to pay for the door.”
“We’ll get on it.” He said as Yuki walked in with a coat on.
She passed by without notice of the door and walked into the club. It seemed weird she didn’t notice the door or me without my disguise on but something was on the horizon. I put the mustache on and walked up to the bar to take over Kyoko after learning of the broken door.
It was a slow eight hours with only Yuki dancing and the crowd dissipating without Kasai. Kyoko wrapped up the patrons and tossed them out quickly as Yuki was back in her coat. Mayu was to her side as they left the club heading east toward the park. I followed them closely as they took a seat on the bench.
I tracked the time with my phone when a man approached the two at five to midnight. After a brief conversation, Yuki left the bench with the man and Mayu came towards me.
“What are you doing with Yuki?” I asked when Mayu passed by and I grabbed her.
“It is only business.”
