General Enka Thread
Enka was Japanese popular music before and following WW2. Nowadays, enka music is most popular among the older generations. Many enka songs deal with topics such as unlucky love and nostalgia. Enka singers, especially women, usually perform wearing a kimono.

You mentioned in another thread you'd seen some Peanuts stuff but didn't want to risk it because of viruses, dodgy site or something. I'm not afraid of viruses so if you still have the links I can go and try and get them and repost on mediafire.

I'll have to dig around for the links - I'm at work and some are
saved on the computer at home, some on my wife's laptop. Except
for Raymondo's page and the rapidshare files I downloaded a couple months
ago [which I don't see anymore] I really cherry picked most of the MP3s I have
from blogs and sites which had 2 or 3 tracks.
BTW! I might be mistaken, but Masa's Meiko Kaji downloads (above) seem

Hmm... I think you might be missing OGG codecs or something. I downloaded your version and all songs are exactly the same length as in my version. Anyways thanks for the links! My MP3 player can't play OGG files so I have been looking for an MP3 version of Zenkyoku Shu :)

I had forgotten that I had to download an OGG/MP3
converter - I got the freebie version and it looks like thats
why I only got part of each track.
Question: you know how links can lead to more links
sometimes? Well, I found some groovy 1970s japanese
sexplotation and TV theme mp3s I think some may be quite
interested in hearing (pretty obscure stuff) and can provide the
link, but I'm not sure which thread I should post them in. Any
recommendations? Should I start a different thread?

Man, that's how I have discovered most of my favorite artists :lol:
Anyways great minds think alike! I was actually planning to start a thread for Japanese Cult Cinema music because I've been into pinky violence (http://www.pinky-violence.com/index.html) flicks lately. I'll try to get that thread up soon so you can share your findings in that thread :)

Is Sister Street Fighter any good? I haven't seen it yet but it does seem interesting. I actually bought Sonny Chiba's The Street Fighter trilogy recently but I'm yet to watch it. Anyways I'm planning to share a few Pinky Violence classics soon :)

Yuki Kadokura isn't one of the biggest names on the scene, but she is one of the most hardcore singers. She's singing mellower kayoukyoku material now, but she's almost scary in some of her earlier songs.

Its been years since I've watched the Street Fighter movies; I bought them all as english
dubs. They are good cheesy flicks and I bought them when I while I was heavily into
Kung Fu flicks (Shaw Brothers, Golden Harvest, etc), which I also grew up watching. I really
thought Etsuko Shiomi was to-DIE-for!!! I probably have about 200 of those ol chop-sockys,
most of which are Chinese. I have a few Zatoichi flicks and a few other Japanese flicks, so
I need to beef up in that area. Its just hard for me to get much movie time in these days.

If someone could please please please find me a Moriyama Aiko album (preferable with Koizake on it) I would be SOOOOOOOOOOO greatful. I haven't had any luck finding anything by her but there seem to be a generous amount of good enka links here so I thought I'd give it a shot :oops: lol I'm desperate.

This is the song that Sayuri Ishikawa performed as the final singer from the Red Team last night at the 62nd NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen last night. This is not the actual performance, because I haven't found a clip on YouTube with good sound quality. But it is a beautiful song, and Sayuri was magnificent.

A local television critic for the Daily Yomiuri , who writs as Wm. penn, wrote this:
Happy New Year! In an effort to start this year off right, Televiews begins with some praise. NHK's 62nd Kohaku Uta Gassen (Red and White Year-end Song Festival) was the best I've ever witnessed--and I've been around since the 33rd. The decision to add more singers was wise, and the performers' careful choice of appropriate songs allowed the whole thing to roll right along at a tasteful yet brisk pace.
Even though the New Year's Eve show was 15 minutes longer in 2011 than in 2010, it seemed to be over in no time and, believe me, I've never said that about the kohaku before. Nor did I wake up the next morning with even a tinge of the usual post-kohaku migraine.

Enka is great because even as a professional singer gets older, character and experience add to the song even if the voice is less powerful. And of course, for amateurs just enjoying karaoke, even if you can't hit all the notes just right, the song forgives you.
And younger singers are out there to keep the tradition alive.

So who are the new generation of female enka singers upcoming now? I guess there won't be many...
Of course, there is ex-AKB48 Wasamin, who has released three albums and 10 singles, the most recent last year so she still seems to be active. I wonder how she is seen among 'mainstream' enka devotees... is the fact that she was an idol a black mark against her?
I have also recently discovered Luka (Ryuka) Mochizuki 望月琉叶 who has released three mini-albums in the last few years, but also combines her enka singing with some ongoing gravure releases. This is one of her more conventional enka MVs:
