This. It's a perfectly fine movie, I liked it, but the awards it deserves fall within the technical side of things as the story is merely just average.

Good to see the Best Picture list actually have films that most people would have seen. Doesn't look elitist this year at all. Yet having said that, my two picks for Best Picture (District 9 and The Hurt Locker) are probably the two nominations which the fewest people have seen. Going by pure first instinct, my pick for best film would be District 9, but The Hurt Locker is just fantastic, one of the most tense films I've ever seen and quite frankly, if Kathryn Bigelow doesn't win the oscar for Best Director then I'll eat my hat.

i also feel that way about avatar. its a great movie, its entertaining, visually stunning, etc. but it is NOT the best picture of the year. the plot is basically fern gully x dances with wolves, its predictable to a T, acting-wise decent (except zoe saldana who was fuckawesome). So i'll be srsly upset if it wins best picture. I have no qualms what so ever for it winning any number of visual effects, and technical awards cus that shit was amazing....but it is NOT the best picture.

Funnily enough tuff, hurt locker and district 9 are the two BP nods i havent seen yet (will by awards though). Having watched the other 8, my favorite is sitll Inglourious Basterds (followed quite closely by Precious and A Serious Man). need to step up and finish watching these movies lol

A lot of nominations makes me think about "People Choice Awards" instead Academy Awards...I mean, Avatar's main appeal is their visual effects (fucking great, yeah but as people has posted before, not a super original/innovating plot). I'd lol if I see Robert Pattinson nominated as best actor for his Twilight role (not offense to anyone).

Quote
SUPPORTING ACTOR:
Matt Damon - Invictus
Woody Harrelson - The Messenger
Christopher Plummer - The Last Station
Stanley Tucci - The Lovely Bones
Christoph Waltz - Inglourious Basterds

I fucking love them both! I haven't seen Woody's film but he is a great actor; and Christoph's role as Hans Landa was superb! The best character by Tarantino ever in my opinion and his acting was great...it gave me shivers each time he appeared on the screen.
