Gahhh! It still won't work.  :banghead: It's like I was given a new toy and someone took it away.  :?

EDIT: Ha! I found out how to make a download link by looking in the source code!

^ I use keepvid, just past in the view URL and it will give you a link you can right-click 'save' on.

Keepvid works with the mp4 links now?  When I tried a few days ago it just gave the normal flv.
EDIT: And it still doesn't work for mp4's, I just tried now.

I tried this link:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=TqwPNWt9XkM&fmt=18

and keepvid gives the .flv, mediainfo also says its H263/flv

do you have other (new) links to try?

From today it looks like youtube have been trialling the higher quality versions of vids.

See the "watch this video in higher quality" link below the player window.
It seems to be adding the link at random to random vids then later if you check the video the link isn't there.  Presumably they're rolling it out gradually to make sure the server can handle it.

That's what I meant.  Keepvid ignores the fmt=18 and just gives the flv.
New links?  What do you mean?  Almost every link also has a mp4 available.  Paste the link in your browser with the &fmt=18 added and retrieve the mp4 froim the cache afterwards. We're not talking about flv here, but the higher quality mp4 that's also available.

I know, thats why I wanted some links with still known working high-quality links/mp4's to see what keepvis is doing with them.
(it still looks like it only gets the 320x240 version)

huh? I don't think they need to convert anything.

I think almost every yt vid has a mp4 version of it. It has worked for every vid I've tried so far.

oh and I think Dan might be right about them testing it out for future use. I googled it and found this

http://www.webware.com/8301-1_109-9817732-2.html

sounds pretty nifty. And for those with weak connections they'll still have the crap quality vids they've always used :P

Yeah I don't need to convert anything.  Some of the mp4's look really nice when played full screen! (whereas the flv's full screen would look like shit).

I get "watch this video in lower quality" with every video I add that &fmt=18 tag, and if I click it, I'm then asked if I want to watch it in higher quality.. So I'm thinking that these tags are simply for the quality vs speed thing they are planning on doing..

And I noticed this in the source code...
http://m.youtube.com/
...which is for mobile phones and uses .3gp video extension.. Can't get any of them to play, but don't really want to either, since they are so damn small..

hmm interesting.

My brother's new phone has some youtube thing, but I can never seem to get it to work. maybe it uses that, but it's currently in development so it doesn't work yet?

Yeah it's working again for me now.  Whatever ban they put on my ip has been lifted.  (I found a way around it last week anyway!)
There's a blog post here about the high quality: http://www.youtube.com/blog?entry=ponKL3LTyr0

I've found that Sony Vegas is a really good tool for successfully being able to upload your videos with that high definition/standard definition option.

The settings I use are:
CBR Windows Media Audio 9.2, 192kbps, 44kHz, stereo
Bitrate VBR Windows Media Video 9 480x360 @ 59.94(Double NTSC)fps Average bit rate 1.50 M

and this will produce a wmv file that when you upload it to youtube, within an hour it should give you the hd option as well as the sd.

hmm, isn't it depends on the video quality uploaded by the uploader too?

if the uploader uploads a bad quality video, I don't think the video resolution will get any better because of this. . .  :?
