Today is the 26th anniversary of Yamnaguchi Momoe's farewell TV appearance. She'd done her farewell concert at the Budoukan on 1980.10.05, but the next day, 1980.10.06, she appeared on a live broadcast, "Tokushou Sayonara Yamaguchi Momoe", a special episode of the show "Yoru no Hit Studio". I just got through watching it on youtube. It's an awesome show. Momoe sings in the presence of many other Idols, singers, and people in the entertainment business in an intimate setting of a small studio. This is almost the full show. It's never been repeated since the original broadcast (apart from the final song), and this recording comes from a home recording someone made at the time. I didn't upload these, many thanks to SubPopbq on youtube who did. Do a search for Yamaguchi Momoe and there's around 9 hours of videos on there, mostly uploaded by this one guy.

Oh, that was great stuff. I didn't watch through all of it, but the end was all emotional and such. Her career was only 8 years long, but it definitely influenced many who still make music today. I wonder how she's doing now. o_O

There's one guy called SubPop who's uploaded so many Momoe videos to youtube. He uploads around 100 videos over the period of a few months and then he deletes his account and starts again with a new account and uploads another stash of videos (not all the same ones as he uploaded the previous time). I dunno why he does this, maybe to stay one step ahead of the record company or TV station who get his videos deleted.

This is his latest account but he doesn't use youtube as much now. he currently has a huge amount of videos here.

If anyone uses share or winny and finds "Momoe Live Premium" (not "Momoe Premium") can you get the hash code for me. (Beware of a fake Live Premium that's around 88mb, the real one would be around 1gb or something big like that I guess).

Wow, I'm impressed with all the Momoe videos

There's some really rare stuff in there!

Here's a performance of one of doinkies' favorite Momoe songs, "Shanikusai -Carnival-", from an old music TV show called Yoru no Hit Studio:

The effects in this performance are cool but her outfit here is kind of doinky ^^;;

There's also another performance of this song from the same show, but it's at a slower tempo. I like her outfit better in this performance though:

So I just downloaded the massive Momoe discography torrent at jpopsuki and I have no idea where to start. She released 22 albums! In seven years!
Is there a good place to start listening? Or do they all sound about the same?

Also, I'm pretty sure the poster above me is the one who posted the torrent up in the first place. So, thanks!

They're not on the albums, I have the albums (got them off winny 4 years ago). Most of them are single b-sides. There was a very recently released cd that was a sortof supplement to momoe premium with a bunch of songs that aren't on momoe premium, they're on there.
Do you have "momoe live premium", I'm looking for that too. It contains a bunch of concerts & musicals, songs that aren't available anywhere else.

At 0:28 you'll see a small clip of Yamaguchi Momoe singing "Kaiten Mokuba", her audition song, from December 1972. This is probably the oldest video you'll ever see of her.

Her actual Star Tanjou performance of Kaiten Mokuba no longer exists on video, but a reel-to-reel audio tape exists, small clips of it have been played in various documentaries. This clip seems to be an earlier recording, just vocals and piano, maybe a rehearsal.

Just curious: are there any recent images of Yamaguchi anywhere? Only in Japan can someone so uber-FAMOUS do a Greta Garbo and just vanish from public life.

I've read that she is sometimes seen in public and that
cameras and crowds are still quick to follow her; she is also
often in gossip columns. Very popular and much loved lady.

Yes, she is!
I've got these 3 that are pretty recent.

I wish she'd make a comeback. She retired to start a family, but her kids are grown up now (one of them is in a rock band) so she'll have plenty of spare time. She once said she didn't like being controlled : as an 'Idol' she sometimes had to sing lyrics that weren't appropriate for her age and had a pretty tough schedule at times. There's be none of that now though. If she returned she'd be totally in control and everyone would bow down to her.
