2007 Aki Basho Senshuraku.

Might postwhore here a bit.  Kyokutenho beat Tamakasuga to finish 12-3.  If Hakuho loses to Chiyotaikai in the last match, there will be a playoff.

Kakuryu tripped up Kasugao by sotogake to finish 7-8.  Kasugao was 10-5.

Tochinonada-Tokitsuumi.  Playing out the string, both 4-10.  Tokitsuumi quick with right uwate, swings him around and Tochi is shoved out by oshidashi.

Dejima-Homasho.  A win by Homasho may elevate him to komusubi.  Dejima needs a win for kachi-koshi.  Dejima slight inashi to his left and Homa never caught up, slapped down by hatakikomi.  8-7 for both.

Tokitenku-Wakanosato.  Couple more makekoshi rikishi.  Waka quickly moves forward, with thrusts and moves in with his left.  Toki circled to his left and back to the center.  Waka went forward again and Toki slapped him down with his right by hatakikomi.

Kotoshogiku (9-5) -Ama (10-4).  What a comeback by Ama the second half, going 6-1 down the stretch.  Beating Yokozuna Hakuho on shonichi gave Ama his first Shukun-sho.  Ama in quick with his left.  Koto doesn't budge and is able to move forward when Ama tries a quick pulldown, yorikiri win.  Both finish 10-5.

Toyonoshima (7-7)-Asasekiryu (8-6).  Toyo shoved out Hakuho and will get the Shukun-sho with a winning tournament.  Nodowa by both.  Stalemate in the middle...  Toyo gathers some strength and shoves out Asa by oshidashi.  The award also comes with a Y2 million cash award.

Kisenosato (6-8)-Kotomitsuki (9-5).  So-so rookie ozeki basho for Koto.  Plenty kensho banners for what is a pretty blah senshuraku match.  Koto looking stern at the shikiri-sen...  losing to Kise last basho ruined his chances for yusho in July.  Koto whacks Kise around pretty hard, tries for an inashi to his left.  Kise grapples in the middle.  Koto swept Kise's right leg with his left hand and trips him down and out, uchimusou.

Aminishiki(9-5) - Kotooshu (8-6).  NHK shows Hakuho dohyo-side, looking all stoic and trance-like, almost falling asleep.  Pretty good basho for new Sekiwake Ami.  Those knee braces look brutal.  Quick morozashi for Ami and Koto is way, way high.  Almost too-easy yorikiri win.  I'm almost surprised that Ami didn't get a special prize for double-digit wins.

Hakuho (12-2) - Chiyotaikai (9-5).  Chiyo holds the record for most ozeki basho, fifty-plus.  As long as his legs are in good shape, he's probably good for another couple years.

45 kensho banners this match.  I think the record is 50-plus.

Chiyo has two hataki wins in the last 6 basho.  If Hakuho is calm he should be able to withstand the oshi attack and keep his balance.

If Hakuho did a henka...  Chiyo would lose for sure!

Jikan desu!  Left hand on the mawashi quick by Hakuho, Chiyo is thrusting a brick wall!  Hakuho just walks him out and wins the Aki Basho with a 13-2 record.  The camera shows Kyokutenho in the dressing room in consolation.  Hakuho wins his third yusho of the year and fourth of his career.

For the first time in over five years, a winner take-all match occurred between two yokozuna on the final day of a sumo basho.  Hakuho (going for the three-peat) vs. Asashoryu (first basho back from suspension after six months).

And it WAS a great match!  A stalemate in the center, Asa being forced back but not out.  Hakuho went for the kill again, twisted to his right and threw down Asa with all his might, uwatenage!

This was Hakuho's 6th Emperors Cup.  Now that Asa has a real rival, I hope the excitement will carry over to the basho in Osaka.

Wow a pic already.

That was a great match. Very exciting.

I'd like this next basho, too, please!

Asashoryu left the Kokugikan without a peep to reporters.  At least he didn't take a swing at anyone.

You know, one of the aspects of dignity is grace in losing.  I think the bad boy still has some issues to work out.

Dang...  I'm only following the bouts via online news reports.  Saw that Kotooshu lost to Aminishiki (!) and I was like, WTF?!!  But the other yokozuna seem to be taking the basho off (injuries?) and he kinda backed into it.

Omedetou, Kotooshu!  One of a very few kadoban yusho and now he's automatically entered in the yokozuna promotion sweepstakes: an unreal level of pressure that I do not think he is prepared for at this time.
