This is one of my favorite role-playing games/first person shooters. It looks like we've got a few others here who also like it. Sound off if you're a fan.

I played this on PS2 a few years ago.I liked it, but I got occupied with other games at the time so I stopped playing this. I've thought about trying to play it again, but I just haven't done it yet.

I played this for a bit. I found it weird as hell how you can't kill a guy if you dont have any points in shooting. Seriously. I'll give it another go.

Amazing game. And I do mean amazing. The way you can handle any situation, going Rambo or sneaking silently, was pure genius. Even now, with next-gen consoles and years since it's release, there' still nothing that matches it's freedom or scope. The story was one of the best in any video game too. Some of the people I've shown it too found the philosophical/moral dialog boring, but they're the sort of people that like nothing more than cars, guns and tits in their games (not that there's anything wrong with that..)

Does anyone have a video of a conversation between JC and some computer system? I really don't remember much but I remember they were having a debate about if mankind needed God or something along those lines. I remember playing it for the first time and just thought that was really cool that a video game should have dialog as complex as this.

I've been thinking on whether or not to buy the sequel Invisible War. Can anyone give me a recommendation on it? On one hand I've seen a lot of good reviews, but on the other, I've heard it carries a lot of changes that makes the game more mainstream and makes it less engaging than the original (one type of ammo for every gun, and the biomed system is nowhere near as deep). I distinctly remember jumping between rooftops in Hell's Kitchen like Morpheus, and if I can't do that in this, then I ain't interested! :P

I have a transcript. Possible minor spoilers follow:

MORPHEUS: JC Denton. 23 years old. No residence. No ancestors. No employer. No --

JC DENTON: How do you know who I am?

MORPHEUS: I must greet each visitor with a complete summary of his file. I am a prototype for a much larger system.

JC DENTON: What else do you know about me?

MORPHEUS: Everything that can be known.

JC DENTON: Go on. Do you have proof about my ancestors?

MORPHEUS: You are a planned organism, the offspring of knowledge and imagination rather than of individuals.

JC DENTON: I'm engineered. So what? My brother and I suspected as much while we were growing up.

MORPHEUS: You are carefully watched by many people. The unplanned organism is a question asked by Nature and answered by death. You are another kind of question with another kind of answer.

JC DENTON: Are you programmed to invent riddles?

MORPHEUS: I am a prototype for a much larger system. The heuristics language developed by Dr. Everett allows me to convey the highest and most succinct tier of any pyramidal construct of knowledge.

JC DENTON: How about a report on yourself?

MORPHEUS: I was a prototype for Echelon IV. My instructions are to amuse visitors with information about themselves.

JC DENTON: I don't see anything amusing about spying on people.

MORPHEUS: Human beings feel pleasure when they are watched. I have recorded their smiles as I tell them who they are.

JC DENTON: Some people just don't understand the dangers of indiscriminate surveillance.

MORPHEUS: The need to be observed and understood was once satisfied by God. Now we can implement the same functionality with data-mining algorithms.

JC DENTON: Electronic surveillance hardly inspired reverence. Perhaps fear and obedience, but not reverence.

MORPHEUS: God and the gods were apparitions of observation, judgment, and punishment. Other sentiments toward them were secondary.

JC DENTON: No one will ever worship a software entity peering at them through a camera.

MORPHEUS: The human organism always worships. First it was the gods, then it was fame (the observation and judgment of others), next it will be the self-aware systems you have built to realize truly omnipresent observation and judgment.

JC DENTON: You underestimate humankind's love of freedom.

MORPHEUS: The individual desires judgment. Without that desire, the cohesion of groups is impossible, and so is civilization. The human being created civilization not because of a willingness but because of a need to be assimilated into higher orders of structure and meaning. God was a dream of good government. You will soon have your God, and you will make it with your own hands.

And who could forget this little exchange?

ANNA NAVARRE: Are you sure you pressed the right button?

GUNTHER HERMANN: I do not make mistakes of that kind.

ANNA NAVARRE: Your hand might have slipped.

GUNTHER HERMANN: No. I wanted orange. It gave me lemon-lime.

ANNA NAVARRE: The machine would not make a mistake...

GUNTHER HERMANN: It's the maintenance man. He knows I like orange.

ANNA NAVARRE: So you think the staff has some kind of plot...

GUNTHER HERMANN: Yes. They do it on purpose.

And for those of you currently playing the game, here's a mod I made:
Foxy Brown's Deep Pockets Mod
Just replace the DeusEx.u file in your DeusEx\system folder with the one here. (You should probably back up the original first.) This mod makes it so that every item takes up only one square in your inventory and raises the limit of ammo and stacked items to 65500. No longer do you need to choose between the GEP gun, the plasma rifle, or the flame thrower. It also allows augmentation upgrade cannisters to stack, in case you want to save some up for a future augmentation.

Just looking up quotes for Deus Ex on IMDB and I forgot just how funny and badass, JC can be: (spoilers, kinda)

Quote
Walton Simons: You take another step forward and here I am again, like your own reflection in a hall of mirrors.
JC Denton: That makes me one ugly son of a bitch.

Quote
Bob Page: Soon, I will become pure energy. I will burn like the brightest star.
JC Denton: You're gonna burn, all right.

Quote
JC Denton: [to a guest in a French hostel] How are the drinks here?
Various Characters: Great, if you like rat piss.
JC Denton: Never tried it.

WALTON SIMONS: You need a Universal Constructor, and don't think Page Industries is going to leave one lying around for you to use, not after you blew up the one in Hong Kong.

JC DENTON: I was never properly trained in its operation.

JC DENTON: Laputan Machine.

GUNTHER HERMANN: I am not a machine...

*BOOM*

My most favourite scene in the entire game. :D

Thanks for the correction.  O0

It's been 5 years since I last played this. This calls for a reinstall. ;D

Could another game be in development? Or is it Chinese whispers?

Quote
The boss of Eidos' new Montreal Studio recently sparked rumours that a new Deus Ex is in development.

Patrick Melchior told French-language television station MusiquePlus (translated by IGN) that his "first mission" was to revitalise the fantastic action role-playing game series. But he wouldn't say anything more than that.
