Title: Japan Earthquake and Tsunami: HELP OUT!
Post by: daigong on March 12, 2011, 02:41:33 AM
We at JPH!P send our thoughts and prayers to the Japanese people affected by this enormous natural disaster. 日本のために祈る Just surreal following the news and all the tsunami alerts across the Pacific. Stay safe and be alert!

The magnitude of the initial quake was 8.9 and it struck just off the coast of Japan's main island of Honshu. It's the biggest earthquake to hit Japan in more than a century, and one of the five biggest in the world since 1900. We've seen the shocking images of this tragic event, it's time to do what we can to support those in need:

Got a tweet from Mika (Japanese fangir) and she is safe, took an extra 18-20 hours or so kinda worried there!

In Canada: "Beginning today, Rogers and Fido wireless customers can text ASIA to 30333 to donate $5 to earthquake relief efforts. The money - 100 per cent of all donations - will go to the Canadian Red Cross Japan Earthquake/Asia-Pacific Tsunami fund. Rogers is also making TV Japan available on free preview on Channel 829 to all digital cable customers." While I was tired of waiting at the station, homeless people gave us their cardboards against cold. We're always passing them by, though.
[by Ms. Arakawa]
Transport facilities were dead and I was so tired waiting so long. Then, a homeless guy gave me a cardboard saying "use this, it can warm you up". I used to pass homeless people by even when they were begging... Although what he did to me was such a sweet stuff.

Thank you for the linkage and translation twissie

THAT just speaks to what we are all feeling, UNITED WE STAND!!

as nach says. GET TO THE RED CROSS!! Prolly the one charity I back often cuz they on top of things during these natural disasters.

It seems the AKB umbrella has also opened up a charity fund/donation as well here (http://www.akb48-gienkin.com/).

According to the site, the fund was opened after discussion with the Japanese Red Cross, and that not only members, but all staff related to the AKB umbrella as well as Akimoto Yasushi has donated to the cause.

They sure need the help now that it's getting cold and they're running out of everything in the tsunami regions (as people keep reporting on NHK).

Japanese exchange students in Norway have started their own fund raising initiative (in collaboration with the Norwegian Red Cross).

They have their own facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/osloforjapan), and they've gotten lotst of media attention :)

Red Cross writes on their websites that these students collected more than 35.000Kr (about $6200) in just a couple of hours yesterday. That's awesome. Lots of people have contacted them about helping out, so much so that they've been forced to decline more volunteers! I'll keep my eye out for them and help them out if I can~

Japanese exchange students in Norway have started their own fund raising initiative (in collaboration with the Norwegian Red Cross).
In addition to this, there was one here in Toronto as well, with exchange students making onigiri to 'sell' on Tuesday. Apparently $6600CAD was raised just from that 'sale' (10 of which was from me 'cuz that's all I had on me at the time), which lasted on 2.5 hours.

(http://i51.tinypic.com/308d5b9.jpg) (not my picture)

There's supposed to be another fund raising event this weekend, though I'm not sure what it is exactly; will report back soon.

Also, a rather meaningful blog entry from Masuda Yuka, a member of AKB48, on the earthquake.
Quote from: http://ameblo.jp/akimoto100323/entry-10831823178.html
Music. Masuda Yuka
I had a sudden thought.

"Now, during the large scale power cutbacks,
not being able to listen to music is just.."
"I want those in the disaster struck area to listen to their favourite music.."

The power of music is really mysterious. Just hearing your favourite song fills you up with an unbelievable amount of energy.
This time, those still in the disaster struck areas probably have the sounds of the earthquake tremors or the terrible sounds of things falling still in their heads.
If we went closer,
even we would probably not be able to offer any courage.. When I think that, this time spent at home feels wasted, like I shouldn't be here nor let it pass.

Watching the news makes my tears endless, so I've thought many times of just turning it off.
But the truth must be faced..
It's no time for us to be looking away.
Some news program said this: "Even though those in the affected areas are doing their utmost to live, those of us who are fine, what good is it for us to be negative! Even though now is when we should be taking charge of Japan.."

That's exactly right; those of us who are able to live our normal lifestyles must lift our heads high with the feeling of lifting up Japan. There must be many things that we can do.

Today I became happy to hear news of many people being rescued. I was moved by the strength of the human spirit.

We are only able to say "Do your best!" but
I pray from the bottom of my heart
that even one more person may be able to survive and reunit with his/her family and loved ones.

If you feel lonely, please try humming your favourite song.
Music should be able to connect and save people!!

Hoping that everyone will have a smile on their faces..

That's pretty incredible stuff, like what we can do if we just step up and get the ball rolling with these kinds of grassroots movements. I too just dug whatever cash I had in my pocket and gave to em, just having the dialogue with total strangers about supporting one cause - really shows how compassionate we are. Fuckin proud JPH!P, keep it up! ALWAYS!!

GREAT KIMMY!! Wish I could be there but wow, that's really awesome.  I'm a RT and help spread the word when you do it up.

Here are some key hashtags to remember:

#Jishin: focuses around general earthquake information
#Anpi: a hashtag for the confirmation of the safety of individuals or places
#Hinan: Evacuation information
#311care: a hashtag regarding medical information for the victims
#PrayforJapan: A general hashtag for support and best wishes for victims of the crisis

Here's hoping the snowy weather doesn't affect the search and rescue too much, and shit, the nuclear situation improves. Everyone in a panic over radiation. Heard on the news this one guy talking about people taking buses outta Sendai, feeling they've betrayed the peeps.

For other UK people donating, don't forget gift-aid!
If you donate to the UK Red Cross like me or any other related charity in the UK, like oxfam, save the children, Japan relief fund and pick gift-aid the UK government will boost your donation by a pretty decent amount, which is really pretty awesome!

The Dutch government donated 1 million Euro to the Red Cross  :thumbup

edit: finally got my paycheck so I made my donation as well. It's not as much as some of you guys donated (props!!) but I hope it will help someone eventually.

^ GJ Barrie. Anything counts, it's what's in your heart! Just because the news is focusing on the West trying to fix gas prices doesn't mean the crisis is over. The search continues. Mad props to the firefighters and workers trying to cool down the nuclear reactors. Progress but shit the radiation.

They did something awesome locally here:

For an entire day, Famoso pizza will donate all its profits to disaster relief efforts in Japan.

“Our world is more connected than ever and it’s devastating to see the desperation people are going through,” said Christian Bullock, co-founder of Famoso.

“If it was us, I think we’d greatly appreciate the world’s help.”

On March 22, across Alberta, all five Famoso Neapolitan Pizzeria locations will join together to donate an entire day’s worth of profit toward the Canadian Red Cross for relief efforts in Japan.

The goal is to raise $10,000.

“I don’t think it takes much to feel tied to Japan,” said Justin Lussier, spokesman for the pizzeria.

“We expect it to be very busy.”

Thomas Prime - All We Got Is Us ft Jas Mace, Nieve & Nicholas Wonder (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DOeyy02mqY#)
http://wordisbond.bandcamp.com/album/hope-for-tomorrow (http://wordisbond.bandcamp.com/album/hope-for-tomorrow)
Here's a 38 track hip hop compilation album for only $6 USD.
100% of the profit goes towards charity.
Quote
“Hope For Tomorrow” is our humble idea to make a difference. We are reaching out to YOU to support our efforts in providing help for those struggling in the aftermath. Our friends at Kevin Nottingham have come on board to assist in the release of a charity album. We are grateful to be in a position to use the talents of some of the undergrounds most respected hip-hop artists. It is our hope that this project will continue to garner attention for the people of Japan and raise some much needed funds.

100% of the money will be given away and shared between the charities Save The Children and

GlobalGiving. The best news is that the album is available for only 6 dollars so it's hard to say no. Artists to feature include Substantial, Dela, Soulchef, Thomas Prime, Marcus D & K-Murdock aswell as some big names from Japan. The global theme of the project is expressed through participation of artists from France, UK, Japan whilst other artists hail from Australia, Germany, USA and the rest of the world!

Alongside the music is a chance to enter our competition for prizes, with the larger the donations the bigger the chance of winning a coveted prize. 20 Dollars or more will see you entered into our top tier of prizes, 10 Dollars will give you a chance for our second tier, but better still there is a guaranteed chance of a prize so long as you can donate in some form.

Made my donation with the family earlier this week.

This disaster hit close to what I call my 2nd home. I was an ALT (Assistant Language Teacher) teaching English to students in a little countryside town for 2 years in Miyagi Prefecture and made many friends and “family” while I was there. I often visited the seaside town of Ishinomaki, about a 30 min drive, to hang out with fellow Japanese friends and other ALTs.

So when I heard that the same area was hit again with a large earthquake, I didn’t think much of it as the area was always volatile, but when I saw it was a 9.0 and images of the tsunami flooded the media, I was shocked, worried, and heartbroken. I immediately tried contacting all the people I knew and luckily the town I lived in was far enough inland that there was no worry of the tsunami, however, I knew of friends in Ishinomaki. I finally was able to contact all of them, but some of their homes were washed away.

Ishinomaki is one of the hardest hit towns and seeing images of rubble strewn streets and buildings completely gone, it feels like a part of my home is gone. The places where we used to hang out and eat, the pier where we caught crabs, and the river banks where we watched fireworks completely disappeared, leaving only the memories left in my mind.

I cannot imagine what it is like right now over there. The news I have from my host mom is that electricity was restored on Monday and after almost 2 weeks running water was finally working, but the weather has been cold and with a lack of fuel, it is difficult to get warm. I hope to return one day, and help rebuild what I can. During that time, I hope to take photos and show how your donations have helped.

If there is anything I learned while in Japan is that the people there are resilient. They are kind, caring and willing to help each other in times of need no questions asked. It may take years for them to rebuild and get back any kind of resemblance of their lives prior to the earthquake, but with your help and generosity I know they will. I’m definitely not a local person or one who can be a proper representative for them, but after experiencing their kindness to me during my short 2 year stay, I thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your generosity to all the people affected in Japan.

Hardly believe my eyes that is true.
With everything that you're facing.
Everything seem so difficult.
I can get up to walk through this.
This is mind, I still stand here, hardly.
And she was there.
I do not want to think how much it hurts.

GAMBATTENE fight on.
Remove the needle hard not despair.
Likewise believes that she will have to get up again.
GAMBATTENE fight on.
She remembered after dark.
There is sun.
Light up again. Thus my second heart.

I dedicate this song to my heart.
With the shouting loudly from Thailand.

Hey everyone,

We at International Wota are running a charity auction to raise funds to help aid in the Japan relief effort.  This is being done in conjunction with a few other blogs.

The central page for the auction can be found at http://www.intlwota.com/the-international-wota-charity-auction/. (http://www.intlwota.com/the-international-wota-charity-auction/.) All the information and auction listings (as well as future listings) can be found on this page. Most of the things in the auction will be J-pop goods, and many of them are H!P goods. For these auctions, shipping is limited to the continent of the seller, but shipping is also being covered by the seller so that when people make bids they don't need to factor in how much they need to set aside for shipping.

Hope some of you can find something that catches your eye and make a bid for a good cause! :)

I've already made my donation to the Red Cross... but I still want to do more.  Japan has given me so much over the years, and watching them go through this struggle, in these darker times... just makes me want to do something.

So here:

I have a bunch of H!P/Morning Musume merchandise going for sale that I'll put towards supporting Japan:

2nd to 9th of April: 100% of proceeds will go to Red Cross to help with the relief efforts in Japan
9th to 16th of April: 50% of proceeds will go to Red Cross to help with the relief efforts in Japan

Please support!

I'm sitting here trying not to cry as I type this, because I'm so moved by what I'm reading... anyway.

My friend who was in Natori at the time of the earthquake and following tsunami is an amazing photographer, and he's decided to sell prints of his photos in order to collect money. He's going back to Natori later this month, and the proceeds from the first round of prints will go towards school supplies for his students. He is a teacher, and the schools he taught at won't be able to house the students. They've got a lot of rebuilding to do. I'm so moved by what he's doing, I'm going to help out, and I hope some of you are willing to help out too.

You can look at available prints and learn more about my friend and his experience in Natori here: http://www.heymistereric.com/ (http://www.heymistereric.com/)

twiss

Truly honourable of him, i heard of those returning to the scene. who want to be there for the rebuilding through loyalty and duty. Remarkable photos of nature and animals!

It was a pretty emotional special winner, I too watched it on TV. Donnie Yen to Wonder Girls were there. This one veteran songstress spoke of how emotional she got looking for her sons and really got worked up that she was lucky, but for the mothers who lost theirs.

Just got back home from Raising Hope For Japan, the fundraiser I mentioned in here a while ago.

It was awesome.

We got a lot of support and everyone had a fantastic time.  At the event tonight, we raised over $1100!!!  This doesn't even count the online donations we received through our donation webpage!    I'll follow up here with pics and probably talk more about the event tomorrow/today during Happy Hour. :D

If you want to contribute, you can donate online here: http://www.mercycorps.org/fundraising/zscforjapan (http://www.mercycorps.org/fundraising/zscforjapan)

All the money raised is going to Mercy Corps to support their relief efforts in Japan.

It's been nearly a year since the Japan Earthquake and Tsunami hit and the nation is still recovering. The 9.0 magnitude earthquake, massive tsunami, and Fukishima Daiichi nuclear power plant disaster, killed more than 15,000 people, and left hundreds of thousands homeless.

The Fukushima nuclear reactor is still recovering.

Japan In A Day

Director Ridley Scott’s crowdsourced project, in collaboration with Fuji Television Network, invites people in Japan to submit videos of their lives this March 11 as a way to commemorate the event online. Modeled after Scott’s Life in a Day, Japan In A Day is not asking for any specific views about the disaster — rather, it’s seeking the ordinary, everyday activities that people have been doing since, as they rebuild their lives and move forward. Since the film is asking for users to submit videos on March 11, it won’t be available for screening on the exact date of the anniversary. But, it will be available the day after, on March 12. “Tsunami Stories”

A project by Voice of America, Tsunami Stories (http://tsunamistories.tumblr.com (http://tsunamistories.tumblr.com)) is a Tumblr-powered website crowdsourcing content around the web from survivors. With the tagline, “How a nation heals from invisible wounds,” the site looks to find how people affected by the disaster are coping. They can submit pictures, videos, links or text describing their experience. The site just launched on March 8, and the hashtag #tsunamistories is gaining some traction on Twitter to encourage submissions. My favorite post so far is this video of robot seals comforting Japanese elderly:
Robotic Seals Help Japanese Tsunami Victims (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zv9LoiFMUok#ws)

That's the thing, the traumatic recovery ....grips in the mind, body, and soul. Pray for those and around the world.

And like on Yoko Ono tweeted about this project: http://www.kickstarter.com//projects/324769158/surviving-japan-a-documentary/ (http://www.kickstarter.com//projects/324769158/surviving-japan-a-documentary/)

The Director Chris Noland is an award-winning videographer, Originally from America, that moved to Japan a year before the earthquake.  Chris Noland was a volunteer in the Tsunami Clean-up, food and aid delivery when the  disaster happened. He was inspired to make a film about the events when it was clear people were not getting enough help or answers. You can read more about his volunteer efforts on the ImaginePeace website here: http://imaginepeace.com/archives/15129 (http://imaginepeace.com/archives/15129)

2012 March 11, 2:46 pm - events were held across the nation of Japan and a moment of silence took place at every venue to remember those who perished during the disaster one year ago, and to show solidarity as the living continue to rebuild their lives.

The AKB48 extended family held events as well at various venues:
