[CHI] Andy Lau
« on: March 29, 2009, 07:31:15 AM »

Andy Lau Tak-Wah MH, JP (born September 27, 1961) is a Hong Kong Cantopop singer, film actor, and producer. He has been one of Hong Kong's most commercially successful film actors since the 1990s. Andy Lau has since appeared in more than 100 films and 300 mini series with Hong Kong's TVB channel, and has a huge fan base throughout Asia with the success of both his onscreen performances and his musical career. Shortly after graduating from Ho Lap College, Andy Lau signed up for the artist training program offered by TVB, which is where his acting career began. The first lead role that made his initial popularity was the TVB series The Emissary in 1982. In the same year, Andy acted in his first movie Once Upon a Rainbow. He was also given a role in Ann Hui's 1982 film, Boat People. Later in 1983, his role as Yang Guo in the popular wuxia TV serial The Return of the Condor Heroes landed him his first leading role in a Shaw Brothers' film called On the Wrong Track.

From the early 80s to the mid 80s, Andy Lau had been the leading actor in many of the TVB series, therefore, he was named as one of "TVB's Five Tigers" along with Tony Leung, Michael Miu, Felix Wong, and Kent Tong. However, in the late 80s, Andy Lau had to leave TVB due to contract problems so he shifted entirely into film acting and he quickly became one of Hong Kong's most bankable stars. Andy Lau is best known in movies for his (often) recurring roles as a "Heroic Gangster" such as "Wah" in Wong Kar Wai's 1988 film, As Tears Go By and "Wah Dee" in Johnnie To's 1990 film, A Moment Of Romance. Though a respectable actor, Lau in the early days was known more for his good looks, though he has answered his detractors since the turn of the century with a series of critically acclaimed movies, especially those directed by Johnnie To. His first major acting prizes came with A Fighter's Blues and Running Out of Time in 2000. With Running Out of Time, he won his very first Hong Kong Film Award ("aka" Golden Statue Award) for Best Actor. In 2004, he won the prestigious Golden Horse Award for his performance in Infernal Affairs 3, the sequel to the popular Infernal Affairs.

Western audiences may also be familiar with his performance in the House of Flying Daggers. In 2005, Andy Lau was awarded "No.1 Box Office Actor 1985-2005" of Hong Kong, yielding a total box office of HKD 1,733,275,816 for shooting 108 films in the past 20 years. It is compared to the first runner-up Stephen Chow (HKD 1,317,452,311) and second runner-up Jackie Chan (HKD 894,090,962). "I've never imagined that would be as much as 1.7 billion!" he told the reporters. In 2007, Andy Lau was awarded the "Nielsen Box Office Star of Asia" by the Nielsen Company (ACNielsen). Back in 1991, Andy Lau has set up his own film production company called Teamwork Motion Pictures Limited, which in 2002 was renamed to Focus Group Holdings Limited. His contributions in the film industry as well as his involvement in nurturing new talents in the Asian film industry led him to being awarded the "Asian Filmaker of the Year" in the Pusan International Film Festival in 2006.

HAHAHA! Andy Lau getting the props!

I had no idea he been in he game dat early. Dude can be bad ass, a hapless romantic, and total dork. I love his comedic turn in Stephen Chow's "Tricky Brains" where he imitates Sing Yeh:

He's like the Russell Crowe of HK! Sings, acts, ... hmm wonder if he got violent at a hotel. He's getting married soon (finally)!!

Andy's gonna be in Tsui Hark's 'Detective Dee'  Di Renjie, the Sherlock Holmes of ancient China, will soon be brought to life as someone being able to talk to animals.

Quote
Andy Lau portrays "Di Ren Jie," a magistrate in the Tang Dynasty court, who is tasked by Empress Wu Zetian (Carina Lau) to investigate a series of enigmatic deaths of court officials.

Andy Lau and Tsui both described the main character, painting him as a nerdy and well-mannered forensic psychologist, very different in mentality and philosophy from Western heroes like Sherlock Holmes and James Bond.

<snip>

DETECTIVE DEE marks Tsui Hark's return to the action genre after directing the poorly received fantasy thriller MISSING (2008). He previously helmed the wuxia film SEVEN SWORDS (2005), featuring action direction by legendary kung fu filmmaker Lau Kar-leung.. Schooled in American filmmaking, Tsui is best known for directing and producing a series of hit action movies in Hong Kong throughout the 1980s and early '90s ranging from the effects-filled fantasy actioner ZU: WARRIORS FROM THE MAGIC MOUNTAIN to the ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA series. In recent years, his films have garnered more criticism for failing to live up to past standards.

He actually had a pretty extensive role (compared to other big time Chinese stars) in "Founding of a Republic" - telling Chiang Kai-shek, hey Mao's speech is on!

Jackie Chan to Show Shaolin Kung-Fu

Jackie Chan has found an ideal place to demonstrate his kung-fu skills - the Shaolin Temple.

The temple, a martial-arts hotbed in central China's Henan Province, held a ceremony on Thursday to welcome Chan, as well as other film stars including Andy Lau, Nicholas Tse and Fan Bingbing. The stars were there to kick off the filming of "New Shaolin Temple".

The film is the first to be allowed on location since the 1982 smash-hit movie "The Shaolin Temple", which turned Jet Li into a star. Besides the star-studded cast, the new film will feature Shaolin monks demonstrating martial arts that have rarely been seen elsewhere.

"New Shaolin Temple" revolves around a Shaolin monk, played by Nicholas Tse, who grows to be a hero during war time. Jackie Chan plays the monk's kung-fu master.

The film will be directed by Benny Chan with a release scheduled for late 2010.

The thousand-year-old Shaolin Temple is widely regarded as the birthplace of Shaolin martial arts, which have inspired a bevy of film and TV productions, including the award-winning 1970s American TV series "Kung Fu", starring David Carradine as a Shaolin monk.

A wax figure of actress Li Bingbing joined actor Andy Lau's sculpture at the Madame Tussaud's wax museum in Hong Kong on Wednesday (September 1), as the two stars head overseas for the world premiere of their latest film.

Li and Lau are scheduled to attend the showing of the film "Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame" (Trailer ) at the Venice Film Festival on Sunday (September 5).

The film is the only Chinese-language candidate for the Golden Lion, the Venice Film Festival's top award.

An old resident at the wax museum, Lau's wax figure has been given a special facelift for the occasion or rather, a heart-lift. He now sports a silicon heart that simulates heartbeats.

Li's figure has been made based on her appearance at the 2007 Huabiao Film Awards in Beijing, where she was named best actress.

The costumes worn by the two stars in "Detective Dee" are also on display next to their wax figures.

In the suspense-cum-action film, Lau is the title character who investigates a series of mysterious deaths set in the ancient Tang Dynasty. Li plays Shangguan Jing'er, a fictional account of the life of Shangguan Wan'er, a prestigious politician.

The film is directed by Tsui Hark and also features Carina Lau, Deng Chao and Tony Leung Ka-Fai.

The winner of the Golden Lion will be announced on September 11.

"Detective Dee" opens in Chinese cinemas on September 29.

The filming of a Chinese remake of the American romantic comedy "What Women Want" has wrapped up, and producers are eying a Valentine's Day release, Sina.com.cn reports.

The movie features Andy Lau and Gong Li in a romantic kissing scene.

The love story was portrayed by Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt in the original film. Chinese director Chen Daming has moved the story from a Chicago advertising agency to one in Beijing.

Lau reprises Gibson's role as an ad executive who can read minds. He uses that ability on his work rival played by Gong Li, but ends up falling in love with her.

The film is the first time that the two A-list stars have collaborated.

5 upcoming films on magic to start production next year

Expect to see Tony Leung and Zhou Xun pair up and Jay Chou partnering Andy Lau in this magic fever.

Are actors turning into magicians?

It sure looks so with five upcoming films on magic set to start production next year. One of which to look out for - Big Magician, with Tony Leung, Lau Ching-Wan and Zhou Xun joining forces with The Shinjuku Incident director Derek Yee.

Another interesting line-up would be Secret 2, where Andy Lau will be featured in Jay Chou's self-directed sequel.

We can also expect to see Aaron Kwok and Tony Leung Ka-Fai team up for Magical Illusion. Stephen Fung will be also be directing and acting in his own movie on enchantment early next year.

The magic fever started when Taiwanese magician Louis Liu's performance in China became a countrywide sensation, causing film makers to jump onto the money train. The magician will also be featured in one film with Shawn Yue.

Andy Lau and Deanie Yip Rejoin in 'Tao Jie'
    2011-02-24 15:35:38     CRIENGLISH.com       Web Editor: Tian Tian
Singer-actor Andy Lau will return to the silver screen this time together with his godmother, actress Deanie Yip, in "Tao Jie".

Singer-actor Andy Lau will return to the silver screen this time together with his godmother, actress Deanie Yip, in director Ann Hui's next project, "Tao Jie", the Beijing News reports.

Andy Lau co-starred with Deanie Yip in "The Truth" in 1988 and enacted a very touching on-screen mother-son relationship.

Inspired by a true life story, the movie depicts a heart-warming relationship between a young master, Roger by Andy Lau, and his long-term nurse, Tao Jie by Deanie Yip.

Although it is 23 years since their last collaboration, Deanie Yip was excited about this opportunity, saying it was just like yesterday and they don't need time to get along when it comes to acting.

The senior actress decided not to dye her hair black in two months to retain the natural look of an aging senior in the movie.

Earlier, under the arrangement of Ann Hui, both of Deanie Yip and Andy Lau visited a nursing home to meet elders, who were former housemaids, to understand their feelings and work experiences. Lau also got to meet the real Roger and they discussed history of Tao Jie, which will help him get into the character.
