Title: Help me find a new laptop
Post by: aginor on November 06, 2008, 09:37:30 PM
Hello!

My old laptop broke and now looking for a new one. the first one I just went to the shop and got the first one I saw and to be honest it was terrible anyway. i'd love a very good working laptop that doesn't fail me and works with everything well . . but I am too much confused about all of these and not sure which one to get now .

laptop for me is mostly a tool I take with me when i travel so can't be too big screen, and well I would play games for example world of warcraft  and others with it so it would have to be good enough to make that work very well . and at least 160gigs space in it. and more than 2 hour battery life . and that it would be good on to days stand point

my price limit is about 1100 euros

if anyone could have any ideas for me I would appreciate it :)

^ 1100 euro's?? Take about any HP laptop you can get, most are (way) below 1000 euro.
I have good experience with HP (using a 12" TabletPC and a 17" 'labtop' as desktop myself)

But I would specify what screen size you really want (like 12" or 15") because that is the most limitting factor in CPU speed, price and disk size (because of the case size).

Also be carefull about weight, a lot of notebooks are above 2kg, getting below that most of the time will put you into the 12" display range.

oohh hp i need to check those out now.

yea and the size of the screen would be like 15¨ i think because 12 is kinda too small . and the weight doesn't mather much hehe just not 10kilos and everything is ok :D

In the 15" range you have lots of machines to choose from starting somewhere from 400 euro (Toshiba) and up, HP's starts at about 600 euro (buts thats a 17")

I would look at that 700-800 euro range to get a good machine that will be usable for around 2 years, then you might want to look for a newer machine.

You can easily get a very good notebook for that money which will last you 2 years+
Just make sure the Virtual memory is 2GB or more, 4GB would be very good, as vista uses 1GB by itself. I think most new notebooks have 2 or more anyway :)

2. http://www.fujitsu-siemens.com/home/products/notebooks/amilo_pa_3515.html Fujitsu Siemens AMILO Pa 3515-005

3. http://global.acer.com/products/notebook/as7730.htm Acer Aspire 7730G

4. Hp, Pavilion dv5-1060

which one would you think is the best for me . or if you know some that would be better say  :)

The Acer with the 9600M GT looks the best, it has 512MB dedicated RAM on the graphics card alone, the rest only have 256MB. That can easily handle any current game, but its a 17" wide-screen. Too big?? Also its 3.8kg, much heavier than some of the others, but it is top spec.

Nvidia don't have many better than the 9600 GT, whereas the 3400 series is pretty basic in terms of the ATI catalogue.

1.  Fujitsu Siemens AMILO Pa 3553-005

2.  Fujitsu Siemens AMILO Pa 3515-005

3.  Acer Aspire 7730G

4.  Hp, Pavilion dv5-1060
The 1st (FS 3553) looks closest to what you want in a transportable notbook.
The 3515 is to low in spec I think (at least video wise)
The acer is way to big (17") to be easy transportable
The HP is not in the same ballpark as the rest (smaller and only a 1.6GHz PentiumM)

If its between these 4, I would go for the 3553, has HDMI output and even a spill-proof keyboard..

I'm not much into game playing myself either, but with HDMI output (meaning it has a good video chip) 4GB RAM and 2GHz+ CPU it should do okay.
If you want the full 4GB used, go for the 64-bit version, drivers these days are not much of a problem anymore (about 20% of notebooks now use 64-bit it looks like) But do check if the games you want to play can handle 64-bit.

wicked!

this is for example one games requirements but I think that laptop will be ok hehe  :)

requirements
    * Windows 2000, Windows Vista or Windows XP
    * Intel Pentium III or AMD Athlon 800 MHz
    * 512 MB or more of RAM
    * 32 MB 3D video card with Hardware T&L or better
    * 6.0 GB free HD space
    * 4× CD-ROM drive
    * 56 kbit/s or faster Internet connection

Thank you all too much for helping me make my decision, heh I should have asked you guys the first time so my laptop wouldn't have been so bad  :D  and one thing seems to be very good in this laptop is that keyboard that if some juice or something goes there a little it won't break so easily . that happened to my laptop last time
