1 Litre Of Tears
15-year-old Ikeuchi Aya was an ordinary girl, the daughter of a family who works at a tofu shop, and a soon-to-be high schooler. However, lately, strange things have been happening to Aya. She has been falling down often and has been walking funny. Her mother, Shioka, takes Aya to see the doctor, and he tells Shioka that Aya has spinocerebellar degeneration - a terrible disease where the brain gradually deteriorates to the point where the victim cannot walk, speak, write, or eat. However it does not affect the mind. How will Aya react when told about her disease? And how will Aya live from now on?
This beautifully moving drama is based on the real-life struggles of a 15-year-old girl named Aya who suffered from an incurable disease, but lived life to the fullest until her death at 25. The script is based on the diary Aya kept writing until she could no longer hold a pen. The book that later followed entitled “One Litre of Tears" has sold over 1.1 million copies in Japan alone.
Aya's only wish was “to live." By carefully depicting Aya's earnest desire to live, and the love of her family, friends, and lover, the drama, “One Litre of Tears" wishes to deliver her simple but strong message: “Just being alive is such a lovely and wonderful thing." ---Fuji TV

Since people started talking about the show in the DL thread I thought that 1 Litre deserves a discussion thread too :)
The subbed version of episode 9 is out!

I just finished watching the episode 9 and things just keep getting worse. Seeing Aya in a wheelchair always kills me and it's so sad seeing Aya lose all her abilities one by one :(
And like Aya said earlier, going to the disability school means that her time is running out. I was so happy that Ako got in Higashikou but they didn't put enough emphasis on that scene. It was one of the few positive things that has happened in the series but it was way too short:
Ako: "Yay, I got in"
Aya: *smiles*
The End
The saddest scene so far:

Fortunately Asou-kun didn't abandon her :)

The episode 10 preview looked too sad and heartbreaking but still I can't wait to see it
-
Yeah, episode 9 was awesome. I'm glad to see that Asou-kun, even when realizing what the future will hold for him and Aya, still decided to stay by her side. It's only going to get harder for them, so I guess that just shows how powerful love is.
Yeesh, I don't know if I'm going to be able to mentally handle next week's episode.    X_X
-
I think the next episode is gonna kill me, seriously.
I don't think I'm gonna be able to see it, it's so sad. But I want to see it!!!

This is gonna break my heart

Sigh, need to catch-up, am at episode 2...
(BTW thanks to the subber's 8) )
-
Ahhh, I looove 1rittoru no namida... just watched ep 10 yesterday ;_; I cried nonstop. Can't wait for the final ep!!
-
I wonder if she's just gonna live on like Yuka's dad or is she gonna die...DOH.
Man she does such a good job...you feel so sad for her, you just wanna go and hug her and shit.
-
that reminds me...i havent take screencaps for ep9 & 10
*ran off*
-
finally caught out to everything I downloaded from Masa.
Once again thanks for your files!!!
man.... When watching each episode I have to cry at least 2-3 times average. I'm actually getting my mention state ready to watch 10 and 11 (later), in case the story gets extreme sad.
I wonder if she's just gonna live on like Yuka's dad or is she gonna die...DOH.
Man she does such a good job...you feel so sad for her, you just wanna go and hug her and shit.
well if they do follow the truth of what real Aya happened, she should die at the last episode... like what I said, I'm getting myself ready if this is how they end the story. It will be the saddest j-dorama I've ever watch!!!
-
I wonder if she's just gonna live on like Yuka's dad or is she gonna die...DOH.
She's only 15-17 in the drama and the real Aya died at the age of 25 so she could end up being like Yuka's dad. However I think that Aya's gonna die in the last episode to make the ending more powerful. Either way it's gonna be just too fucking sad
-
There, I'm all caught up. Thanks for providing episodes 5-9, Masa. BT was darn slow. >_>
I'm getting all down watching Aya's progress getting worse. It's almost going too fast. :(
-
so sad when she's like..."I have nowhere else to go now" and "There's nothing I can do anymore".
From the preview, it doesn't seem like she's gonna die but it would be more dramatic if she did.
-
I'm afraid to watch the episode 10 and the next...
I think i will die.
Seriously.
-
I swear my sister was going to jump out of the window after watching ep6 she was sobbing like no tomorrow you know that part where ako confronted her brother for being ashamed of aya
-
well...if u pay more attention to "omg erika is way cute", u'd get over that easily :P
-
Erika's cute like Eri I like their wonky tooths :bounce:
-
it's called "Sweet Tooth" :D
-
Erika's cute like Eri I like their wonky tooths :bounce:
what's wonky tooths?? cross-tooth? :D
-
Off topic: Who do you think is cuter? Erika or Eri? :jerk:
-
I think they push on different areas of cute. Eri is more adorable, and Erika is like pretty and cute.
-
Off topic: Who do you think is cuter? Erika or Eri? :jerk:
id say erika tho ... eri is super cute too and weird ...
cant wait for episode 10 to be subbed

I LOVE this drama! I watch it religiously every week even tho it makes me cry like no other drama has!
-
I just watched episode 10, for some reason by the end of the show, some strange liquid was flowing down my face, my eyes were becoming irritated, and I also had the sniffles. Am I sick guys?
-
It's blood. Get in contact with a doctor ASAP.
-
i never shed a tear for this drama...... i guess i focus too much on "omg she's cute"
-
Yeah me too but its annoying when you cant enjoy your favourite erika moments when someone is sobbing like there's no tomorrow beside you :x
-
Episode 10 is definitely the saddest and most depressing episode so far. It just hurts so much to see Aya wanting to give up. Asou-kun has changed a lot between the episodes 9 & 10. Dude has finally learned how to smile
Aya's graduation was nice but I felt so sorry for her when she was having a dinner with her old friends.
The others were excited about attending new schools while Aya has no future at all.
Aya's "love letter" to Asou-kun fucking broke my heart, it was probably the saddest moment in the whole series
But judging the ep 11 preview, Asou-kun seems to stay by her side till the end despite the heartbreaking letter :thumbsup
i never shed a tear for this drama......
Same here, but I'm a guy so that explains why I don't cry :)
-
Is it wrong that I find Erika to look so damn hot in certain scenes at the hospital?
and Masa is lying, he cries more than anyone else.
-
Just watched the raw version whatever happened to her taking part in some experiment? That'd have been 5mins more of erika for me :( and that doctor kept the same hair for over 10yrs the only thing was that he shaved at the end hahaha
-
haha not just the same hair, same goatee! And he still looks young, compared to the parents. And yeah, what happened to the case study?!
I have to admit though, the way they sped up the 5years, it made her death so...anticlimatic. Doesn't help when they're at the grave 1 year later, the brother and sisters aren't there nor are her friends.
-
They need to make a special to follow up on that experimental treatment phrase that way there's another 60mins more of Erika for me!!! :w00t:
-
*ignores all above posts*
i love this show... T______T
-
Hm, yes the end was somewhat anticlimatic but I also do not think a long 'death scene' would be something to show.
They already at the start (first few episodes) showed the male patient in the last stages, so that was actually 'covered' already.
Most of this seems to also be about how the rest of the family/friends react.
(Patiently waiting for the subbed version to understand more of what they said...)
-
It makes me cry every week. T_T So that's 11 weeks in total. sigh
I wonder if I hit the 1 Liter mark. ?_?
Btw, I am reading the novel version (autobiography?) now, written by 木藤亜也. There's also another book by her mum, 木藤朝香. Both books are Interesting and heart wenching at the same time.

lol Thimas, just noticed "liter" in your sig :X - Not to be rude to the original Aya Ikeuchi, but anyone beside me feel much better watching Aya-Sawajiri than lets say watching Aya-Ikeuchi? Get my drift?

I get you.

Having someone visually pleasing play the role is needed, otherwise I do not think it would have had the same impact (on us  )

Episode 10's sadness rating > Episode 11's

the real one is called Kitou Aya. I think they changed the surname for respecting the family....

:o ah....

Finally finish watching all the sub-versions of 1 Litre of Tears.

don't know what to say, but ya... I'm thinking alot now!

I FINALLY SAW THE FINALE!!!!!!
It was the most emotional of all the episodes imo, but it wasn't really the saddest(that goes to 10 for me). Just about every scene was filled with different emotions. It was a fit end to the show.
But one thing bothered me alittle. In the diary Aya stated that she wanted to be held tightly, that would have been a perfect time to have Asou give her a big hug(I so wanted to do that in that scene). Though they made the two so in love, they were sort of missing alot of physical contact with each other. That I think would've made their relationship more effective.
Though, as one stated earlier, the ending didn't really make much sense without Aya's friends and family being at the grave site, but then again, that scene would have taken place 6 years after the last time you see them, I think it was implying that they were all in that crowd of a hundered or so people. But I would have prefered maybe having them get other actors I guess to portray the older characters(as long as they looked remotely like the originals). But that also could take the emotions out of the scene by putting unfamiliar people to portray characters we have already grown a connection to.
Other than the things I mentioned above, I think it was a great drama, one of my favorites.

erika is 1/4 french, 3/4 japanese.

SPOILERS
When Aya was dead
The dad's voice killed me

Spoiler Response
That scene where Aya stated that she wanted to be held tightly really bothered me also. I think the only time they touched in the whole series was in the first episode when Haruto gave her a lift to school on his bike. Also in ep. 11 when Haruto visits Aya to give her the postcard, she reaches her arm out through the curtain. He opens it but completely ignores the arm. Last night I found out that the actor who plays Haruto is in NEWS, a Johnnys group. I guess that explains it
Masa told me there was a rumor that Haruto wasn't a real character...really sucks because he really spiced up the story. It makes sense how the quotes from the diary were never about Haruto.
Its been more than 10 years since Aya died, and there is still no cure for the Spinocerebellar Degeneration disease. I hope the researchers keep at it until they can find a cure.
This drama is a must watch for anyone because of its great story and the lessons you can learn from it. Aya only wanted to live, and she never gave up on this desire until the very end. "Live on"
I loved this drama, its a favorite of all-time.
-
It's not a rumor, there is no Haruto. The producers put him in there because the real Aya's mother wanted to give Aya a lover that she never had in her real but short life. That's also one reason why they never touched, there was no Haruto. There could've been someone there for mental support but not physical support.
-
Hm, there is artistic leaway to 'spice things up', but Haruto is a big part of the story as told... subtract a few points.
-
It was based off Aya Kitou's diary. They made a completely different story based on her journal entries. It doesn't depict her life, but is supposed to convey the feelings she's felt and the impact her life had on the people around her.
-

Didn't watch everything, bits and pieces, but did watch more near the end of the series...
Damn friend for playing it while at her house... :x :P
Good drama. Can see why you guys are all into it. XD But I do feel the pain now. Oh yes, I do.
-
here is my guess about Aya/Haruto's relationship at the end.
To me, Haruto plays a mental supporter in Aya's life only. When I watch the dorama I always think "does Haruto really like her or that he likes her because of sympathy or just a sudden move?"
At the end of the dorama many of you wonder why didn't Haruto hug her, or had any physical contact with Aya. I think it's because what he said to his father in Ep. 10 after he read the letter from Aya. Remember how before he always go against his father because he thinks he's too strict to him (or anything close to). But at the end he realized that he cannot have a relationship with Aya like he wants (from reading the letter and knowing how Aya feeling), just like what his father told him.
ya... perhaps Haruto felt regret of not being able to love Aya (as in the scene where he looked at the letter/dolphin chain but not touching it). But like I said previously, he's probably in the situation between "accepting his father/regreting himself"
-
I 'played' (in memory, no need to actually do that after such a short time) a few episodes again, and come to think of it, most of what Haruto did was way to 'White Knight' to be true.
It is actually what drew me into this, and not so much the main character (although her struggle is the main thread for this, I think it is also about the reactions of the people surrounding her). Some of the reactions are what I would do, strange maybe but that holding an umbrella *is* something I would do (and have done in other ways)...
So him being added... I am disappointed.
-

the story of 1 Litre Of Tears is too sad..........
-
Finally managed to watch the whole serie !!! :)
Yeah, i'm kinda slow, but i'm so busy lately with work and stuff... :(
Well, i wasn't too excited about this serie when i first heard of it, because the subject was too... well... sad, and teary, and moochy... ya know!!!
And after a long day at work, i'd rather relax myself with some mindless entertainment stuff like "Mecha ike!" or "Haro Moni!" than with this kind of drama.
But, since it was available for direct download (praise to Masa and the hidden sith lord that hosts our files on the forum!!!), i did give it a try and was hooked straight after the second episode. :)
'kay, the whole thing WAS sad and moochy, but, in a good way i guess...
I really enjoyed it... Props goes to the subbing teams for the excellent work they did!!! :)
Okay, now, since i already watched this month's fansub for "Ace wo nerae Ep6", and i'm still waiting for "Boku dake no Madonna EP4", i guess i'll check the "Nobuta wo produce" serie posted by Ping!!! it looks good !!! :P
-
I love this j-dorama. It´s my favorite one.
-
ukh, sad story...
i didn't like it...
but d story really gud...
-
I finished watching this drama bout a month ago and i still can't get it out of my mind, it really is one of the most saddest and touching dramas i've ever seen. Oh and i really love the songs used - "Only Human" and "Konayuki".

I don't understand how people could watch this drama in its entirety more than once. You people must really hate yourselves/lives or you just love watching a teenage girl suffer.

Hehe yeah I loved this drama and I guess I was lucky to have started this as my first J-Drama as more people do recommend this as a starting drama to watch such as Full House for K-Drama but this drama was sooooooooooo sad I literally cried throughout the drama... This is embarassing as this is coming from a guy ><
-
The best and most heart touching drama I ever seen. I did not know that I can cry that much. prepare at least one box of tissue if you going to watch this.

-
KICK-BUTT DRAMA. seriously. i bawled from ep. 3 onwards. it really does wonders for you. you seriously start counting your blessings afterwards... must watch!
-
Just finished episode 4. It's the most depressing show I've ever seen. I love it but it makes me tear up :(. What surprises me the most is how Aya-sama can deal with this at the age of 15. I feel really bad for everyone in the show, except for that lame basketball guy that dumped her >_>.
Speaking of which, does anyone know if the diary she wrote is available in English? I hope it is...
-
The story plot is damned touching (becos' it is based on true life story).
Even the ending song, Only Human, sung by the korean-based-in-japan singer K, is tearing my heart apart.
Don't dare to look into the mirror after watching each episode :ONgyaaah:
-
this really got me in the heart. i did shed a tear when i saw the first time especially the ending theme.
-
I LOVE this drama! I watch it religiously every week even tho it makes me cry like no other drama has!
Crying is good for our souls...at least once in a while.
Ichi Ritoru no Namida was, and still is, my first J-Dorama, and I must say that it was a very good spiritual experience...and one of the most meaningful stories I've ever come across.
-
still have this drama on my iPod, i'll watch it when i need to let it out, and to get myself motivated...i'll think "alright i shuldn't complain, i should try my very best" it's very motivating
and the songs are awesome, i'm trying to figure out the notes so i can play it on piano
-
Who hasn't cried with this? :MKcry2:
Oh god, i always see the last part (form the last episode) and the first part (when her mom is reading her diary...) when i can't cry. This makes me feel so sad D: and then when i hear "Only Human" is worst T_T
Very good drama, it's one of the best dramas in Japan ever :D

as far as I'm concerned, it's one of the best and most meaningful stories in Far East Asia, if not the world! I'm grateful that it was adapted so well into a J-Dorama; also, the cast was excellent!
-
^Yes, maybe it's. I haven't saw a novel or something with this theme yet so, it's my first time seeing something like 1 litre XD
-
hm...this is the first jdorama that makes me want to cry a lot....so touching.....i hope when i go cd shop i can find this box of drama....

One Litre of Tears is one of the best doramas ever! It's just so..sad and touching. :"( But I totally love it. Erika Sawajiri does AMAZING job as Aya, and Ryo Nishikido is so hot in it~ <3 It's the dorama that makes you cry the most. LOVE <3
-
Yeah, this drama is the only that has make me fell a tear so far, and i think maybe it will be the only one (We will have to see about that).
But yeah, the actors were so good. Ryo, Erika and Riko (the younger sister) are so cool and the one in her class is also cool (known as the evil twin in Dragon Zakura)
-
Try watching 'Sekai no chuushin de, Ai wo sakebu' if this was the only drama that made you fell a tear ;)
(it's subbed by SARS)

This series is great. I got misty-eyed at the ending but that was about it. But seriously people, this is great. Go get it!
-
This is nuts. I have only seen the first episode and I am crying the hell out of all the OPVs posted on the Youtube. I don;t think I would ever be able to survive the entire episodes of the Drama. Why the Japanese needed to make so sad drama and to make the crap out of everyone they inserted all the kawaii pictures of the real girl who dies by that stupid disease. This is soo stupid.. I need to take a break of a few weeks and get my steps back strong to watch the second episode. This completely sucks...

i agree with patkje.. riko was outstanding for someone her age.. of coZ sawajiri was excellent as usual..

I just found out that there's gonna be a 3 hr special airing in April, apparently about the story after Aya dies:
From Sanspo News

-
hm..im happy to hear the news..but i think the story will make me sad when watching it...well, at least i can see aya's little cute sister again
-
How come everyone talk about the series?
I just found out that there is movie version of it, but unfortunely it is only chinese subbed.
But had anyone watched the movie version yet?
-
@Lopkiu: Everyone talks about this Drama because it is so dramatic in terms of life changing (In some cases){For me=P} but it is probably the best drama to begin with for any viewer.
Yes there is a Movie version of it, but I, myself have not seen it so I can not voice my opinion to compare.
But yeah this drama is definitely a must watch as it shows just how some diseases can really mess up ones life but with the right attitude you can try to make the best of what you have.
-
Ah, I just found out about the special that aired recently. Has anyone watched it yet?
Edit: zomg. NO WAI THAT RIKO IS 14. :O
-
@Ayabie: I haven't but reading a few comments it seems most of it is just flashbacks from the SEries ><.
And yeah I couldn't believe Riko is onlay 14 either ><
-
Ok, so it's a special about Asou-kun becoming a doctor and telling Aya's story to a 14 year old girl who doesn't want to live anymore. Sounds nice and a good way to make a digest version.
And yes, I would like to see the movie too....does anyone know where to find it online? Even with Chinese subs it's OK.
-
Ok.. So it's (dun dun da..) Friday the 13th.
Has the special gone up on trackers yet? @__@ I've searched high and low for days, but couldn't find it anywhere (not even in it's raw format). :O
-
@Mikitty-saikou: It is way too fast for a hardsubbed release, and the raw can be foudn a d-A
-
^SC, Thanks for the heads up. Of course, I know it's way too soon for a subbed version..*wishful thinking. lol* I searched d-A and couldn't find a torrent link for the raw version. X_x
-
Here you are, 1 Litre of Tears SP RAW (http://www.d-addicts.com/forum/viewtopic_46973.htm).
-
I've had the SP's chinese subbed version stuck on my PC for the past week, but haven't had time to watch it yet.
I fast-jumped it though, and it was mostly parts from the series. Think it's mostly a mash-up of all the episodes, instead of the 3 hours of new stuff ppl are hoping. :-[
-
Well it was sort of expected as.. well Aya is 'dead' so you can't really do much cept flashbacks and whatnot, and bleh turns out only like 2 h 2min if I am not mistaken? I didn't dl the RAW.
-
SPOILERS Warning:
The special was more of a retrospect and how everyone has coped since Aya's death
It was a pretty interesting special but nothing really to rave about. Can't wait for the subs to come out.
-
been looking forward to this SP...cant wait for subs
-
I didn't notice there is a SP version 1liter no namida ........
I; going to download it from d-addicts,,,,,,,,
can't wait it long :D
-
owwwhhh... ichi litoru no namida..... really loves this dorama........ i need to take about a week to watch this dorama... why??? because after i watched one episode... i can't continue with another.... i'm out of my tears.... every episodes make a tears for me except from 1-3...... and... what i respect the most is because this is from a real life story.... the ending for the dorama is good... i cry a lot and i want myself die like that...... i want when i leave this world i still can influence the other by what i have done in the past.... i want them to cry a lot for me... hohohoh......
anyway2.... i think the movie is not as good as the dorama.........
-
So Sad, So great. One of the best series ever i think :kneelbow:
-
Erika Sawajiri is super cute**
I like her face!!
-
I know this is a kinda dead forum thread, but this drama deserves more attention and I have to say this is one of the best if not the best dorama ive ever seen. Truly inspirational. If you havent seen it yet, its a must watch.
-
I finished this drama, actually a few hours ago, and I loved it....
Never care to see dramas, but I decided to see this, by curiosity... Awesome thing :)
-
I've watched the movie version w/ Erika Sawajiri many times & it always has me crying like a little beotch every single time.
Remioromen's Konayuki is very nice also.
