Saw it coming miles ahead, tbqh. Their ultimate dream of performing at the Tokyo Dome was finally coming into fruition, something big has to happen there, right? Something like a graduation for 1st or 2nd gen, maybe Acchan, Mariko, Yuko, or Sayaka. Turns out it's Acchan.
But damn this is still hard to swallow. :cry:
I just hope this doesn't start a string of graduation announcements from the others as the Tokyo Dome concert looms closer. I don't want the Tokyo Dome Concert turning into a bigger sobfest than it already will surely be. AKB can only afford to lose its pillars one at a time. :(

ＡＫＢ４８のセンター、前田敦子（２０）が２５日、ＡＫＢ４８からの卒業を発表した。
この日開催された「業務連絡。頼むぞ、片山部長！ｉｎさいたまスーパーアリーナ」の最終日公演のアンコールで、自らの口で発表した。
「私は１４歳の時、ＡＫＢ４８のオーディションを受けました。それは私の人生の中で大きな決断でした。２度目の大きな決断をさせてください。ＡＫＢ４８を卒業します」と号泣した。「まだ、詳しいことは決まっていません。今すぐいなくなってしまう訳ではありません。また詳しいことが決まったら、みなさんにお伝えします」と続けた。

人気アイドルグループ・AKB48のエース、前田敦子（20）がグループを卒業することが決定した。さいたまスーパーアリーナ3Days公演の最終日となる25日、全ての演目を終えたあとに前田が「きょうここで大きな決断をさせてください。私、前田敦子はAKB48を卒業します。私なりに頑張った6年半でした」と発表すると、AKB史上最大の衝撃発表に会場は騒然となり、メンバーは泣き崩れた。卒業時期は現時点で未定。
悲願だった初の東京ドーム公演決定、SKE48松井珠理奈とNMB48渡辺美優紀の期間限定AKB入りに続くサプライズは「AKB48の顔」あっちゃんの卒業だった。コンサートではすっかり恒例となったサプライズの中でも最大級の発表に2万5000人の観客は絶叫。グループ発足以来、ともに歩んできた高橋みなみは号泣しながらも「彼女なりに考えたこと。AKBにいることがゴール地点ではありません。たくさんのものを背負ってきた敦子を見送って」と盟友の背中を押した。
前田は2005年12月に東京・秋葉原のAKB48劇場で初公演以来、不動のセンターとしてAKBの顔に。昨年6月には映画『もしドラ』に初主演するとともにソロデビューを果たし、歌手としても女優としても活躍している。
過去3度行われた「選抜総選挙」は、第1回（2009年）1位、第2回（10年）2位、第3回（11年）1位と首位を奪還。AKB48メンバーで選挙TOP10入り経験者の卒業は初めてとなる。

I think it would have happened sooner or later (thank you people here for explaining a little more insight into AKB) but its a natural thing for any idol to do and explore the business that surround them now. The bird has to fly from the nest and hope it can float to its next destination without fail

Maeda Atsuko's graduation speech
I am a first-generation member and have been here since I was 14. This was my life. It was a big decision. And I will make a second important decision. I am going to graduate.
I have caused some troubles because of my mood swings, but thanks for everyone's help, I am here today. To perform in Tokyo Dome was a dream since I was 14.
Now this dream has come true, at 20 years of age, I have to work hard towards my next dream.
I have worked hard for the past 6-1/2 years. I have to move onto my next dream at the age of 20. I am anxious and worried because I don't know what will happen. But for the kouhai, I have to take the first step towards this. No details have been decided.

Acchan... She's the first reason I fell in love with AKB48 last year... Man, too many emotions stirring inside of me. I know this is going to happen but not expecting it to be this soon. Whatever it is, I hope for a better success for Acchan in her other career. Ahhhh shucks. :cry:

I was expecting a graduation but I didn't think it was gonna be Acchan, it's upsetting and somehow not really.
With their Tokyo Dome dream coming true, I guess it was time to move on pursue her own dream, doesn't fail to make me cry though. ;A;

No one on earth expected it'd be Acchan, who has been one of the key foundations alongside Takamina of the establishment since DAY ONE
She only 20! She's got plenty more years to develop career! Why the Dome as final endpoint?!?!
More importantly, what's gonna happen to akb48?? We don't want to see another Humpty Dumpty like MAX, SPEED, & MMusume, who had their great falls & can't be put together again.

I have to move onto my next dream at the age of 20.
I don't buy this at all.
- 20 years is still super young, even for an idol these days.
- She can release all the solo records or get all the acting gigs she wants at the moment.
- I do believe Acchan can survive in the world of entertainment without AKB48, no question about it, but being in AKB48 will make it that much easier.
On the other hand, quiting at the top has always been something I admire. This way she'll always be AKB48's top member. Always.

Yesterday I wrote in my japanese friends blog that maybe an important member will leave the group at the Tokyo Dome Concert, some people tought about Takamina because she's in the video for the Tokyo dome concert..but it will be Acchan! T_T

This 3 days was full of big news for the group.
I don't want to be pesimistic but it smell like AKB48 has started the last chapter of his history..

I think Acchan will Graduate after The 26th Single Released... As for the center, I WOULD REALLY VOTE FOR TAKAMINA.... (Sorry, YUKO!) It's just that I think Takamina would suit the Best other than Anyone...

I won't say it's the end of AKB. There will still be many popular members remaining. Didn't Ue Kara Mariko sell well even tho Acchan was missing?
She has made this decision herself, thinking about it for a year. She'll perform in Tokyo Dome, she has fullfilled her dream. Easy for me to say all this since I'm not Acchan fan, but I know many of her fans are heartbroken. Stay strong! :rock:

I think it's great to know Acchan will realize the goal of performing in Tokyo Dome.

^It's pretty crazy that kid has helped in building an idol group that has accomplished so much, breaking records left and right.
I've never been a fan of Acchan, but I totally respect the effort she's given to the group and it's great she'll graduate on such a high note.
Honestly, I've always been kinda worried that AKB's popularity would drop soon, since Momusu's popularity started decreasing after their 5th year.
But I know it's unfair to compare and guess like that (MM is still going strong). It's the groups' actions that decide their future. And AKB still looks mighty strong.

I have a thought!
Rather than letting Acchan participate in the next senbatsu election, why not make the single before it her graduation single?
- The single with the voting tickets always sells like crazy, and with this extra layer it can break 1.5 million
- Acchan fans will buy it because they want to give Acchan a proper goodbye present, rather than boycotting the election altogether
- Acchan's graduation won't be dragged along for too long, because if she wins the election it will evolve tons of media appearances and all the stuff for the actual election single again.
- All the voting tickets will be used for a wide variety of other girls, thus making the election completely unpredictable with fresh results! It will be a clean goodbye for Acchan and a nice welcome for the next era.

Even though I'm neutral towards Acchan, I sincerely don't wish for her to graduate at this point. Her graduation is going to affect the rest of the senior members for sure and will probably prompt them into thinking about their own graduation. I really don't want to see a string of graduations of our beloved familiar faces in 2012.
I'm getting depressed thinking about the effects of Acchan's graduation but still, respect to her for taking such a bold step! She is working towards her dream and she will show the juniors that it is possible to achieve theirs through AKB48. All the best to her. :rock:

^^^I do hope something similar to that plays out, SomethingWild. If Atsuko stays in for the election drive, she won't be graduating until September at earliest (6+ months), I reckon. Be great if she left, freed up the top spot, which would certainly make the election much more interesting.
But to be honest, Atsuko has been fairly invisible since I buckled down for AKB, two years ago. A vast majority of the other members are doing more things, more regularly. It'll be sad to see a long-standing member leave, but I imagine it's just gonna be business as usual.

Yeah I dont buy it either. She is too young to quit out of something like AKB. Frankly speaking, Acchan might have did something wrong to piss people off. I'm not bagging on Acchan since my feelings are neutral about her and I think she can be a good role model the research students. Its just I dont get it at all, why leave now, Why is the point of leaving now. I just dont get it...My heart really goes out to all Acchan fans and definitely Takamina, since that was her partner-in-crime.

To be honest, I didn't see this coming at all. She's still not all that old for an idol. Plenty of idols go into their mid twenties. I figured she'd still be in AKB for a few years yet given her popularity.
Acchan might not be my number one, but she's always been the face of AKB for me and I've always loved her dearly. She was a good part of the reason I became a fan of AKB. I saw her in the Aitakatta PV and thought to myself 'I must find out who this girl is'. I'm very sad to see her go but I hope that she has a bright future ahead of her.

I'm sad to see that she has decided to go, I've always thought of her as the face of AKB with Takamina being the heart. But she has been a really busy girl, and with all the other things she's doing, I guess she doesn't want to 'coast it' in AKB if she cannot give all the time that it must demand.
I can see a very bright future for her, and I wish her much success in everything she does :D
It does make that glimpse of her in the Nogizaka46 Aitakatta PV that much more poignant :'(
My favourite scene with Acchan in a PV will always be her smiling face in Namida Surprise, when her friends are presenting the cake to her...... Omedetto!

I had a feeling we'd see a big name graduate sometime relatively soon. Think about it, AKB48 is 6 1/2 years old and we still have a ton of first generation members around. For an idol group, that's getting up there. For it to be Acchan herself, though, I am a bit surprised.
Personally, I don't think this is the end of AKB48. It will work itself out. They still have Yuko and some other strong personalities in the group. I do think, however, that this will hurt their general public appeal a bit simply because Acchan is the one everyone knows. That's something that can be fixed, though. Good management is key here, they have to make sure the public knows AKB48 is far from done.
I've come to really like Acchan and respect what she does, but for me this is more a big deal in that AKB48 is going to be different from the moment she leaves onward. It really does signify the end of an era.
In any case, I congratulate Acchan on her graduation. I'm glad to read that it was her decision, and not some crazy management plot like the news announced yesterday.

This announcement is rather sudden. Even if I'm not a big fan of Maeda's, I believe that all of her fans are very sad with all of this. I believe that Maeda's departure may eventually cause many problems, but also new opportunities for all AKB members during the Senbatsu, so I hope that something along the lines of what SomethingWild said about the Senbatsu single happens because, if Maeda stays in AKB untill election day, not only would it be clear that she would win as a thank you by her fans but it would also be tough to reorganize everything. If that's not the case, the new Senbatsu will be very interesting and unpredictable.
However, I only hope that after Maeda's departure, all of her fans keep supporting AKB like Maeda wished in her last Senbatsu.

Seeing the picture of Acchan in tears was very moving. She is taking a big step, and she must be a bit scared. She is a favorite, and she has acting skills that should keep her busy. Will always admire her for showing her vulnerability in an honest way.

Everybody by now probably heard Maeda Atsuko's decision to graduate...she will always be the most beautiful off all flowers in my eyes. As much as I'm crying and hurting inside, i will stand strong and support her no matter what.

When I saw this news this morning, I was completely shocked. I thought Maeda would at least stay for at least another year or two. Even though she's not one of my favorites, the news is still a bit depressing. But she is taking a big chance, so I give her props in making such a big decision and I am sure that she will have many opportunities in the future a head of her and she'll have the support from everyone that has been with her in AKB. I'm looking forward to see what the future will bring for Maeda Atsuko.

Anyone planning on going to her graduation concert?
Of course we don't exactly know when or where it is yet, but we do know that it will be one of the most memorable moments in AKB48 history. Secondly, it's probably the last chance of seeing Acchan perform with AKB48 in the near future.
Rather than spending a lot of money on the Japan Expo, I'm thinking of saving up, applying for overseas tickets (or normal ones, depending on that the options are) and just make the trip.

And those who voted Acchan probably won't have the same craziness as they once had last year since she isn't in the competition anymore, so the votes from that voting bloc will decrease from a lot (maybe 50%-70%).

An idol 'graduating' should not be front-page news

Following Atsuko Maeda's March 25 announcement that she was leaving the all-girl idol collective AKB48, a rumor circulated on Twitter that a male University of Tokyo student had committed suicide in response. The rumor was quickly exposed as a hoax, but the point had been made. People were taking the news way too seriously. No one was really surprised when the sports tabloids made it their front-page story, but did the national dailies have to report it in such detail?
When Maeda said she was "graduating" from a group she joined as an original member at 14, she was already 20, the age of majority in Japan. As a commercial enterprise, AKB48 is fixated on adolescence, but there are members even older than Maeda who remain with the ship, so some commentators have been pondering the significance of her decision. She's nominally the group's most popular member and, more significantly, her endeavors as a solo entity have yet to meet with much success. In the past she said her main ambition was to be an actress, but the TV drama series she appeared in last summer, "Hanazakari ni Kimitachi," averaged a miserable 7 percent share per episode, and her big movie vehicle, "Moshi Koko Yakyu no Joshi Maneja ga Dorakka no 'Manejimento' wo Yondara," was a box-office dud. Adding insult to injury, the tabloid Sports Hochi awarded her its Hebi Ichigo Award — Japan's equivalent of Hollywood's Razzies for the worst film performances of the year.
Some in the show-business press hold that Maeda may be unselfishly making room for young AKB members to rise higher in the organization, but gossip columnist Yoshiko Matsumoto thinks it might be something else. She sympathizes with Maeda and believes the young star wasn't happy in the group. It's lonely at the top, and the pressure to stay there is more emotionally vexing than it's worth. People misread her slightly contrarian attitude as the outward manifestation of a grouchy constitution, but the politics that rules AKB forces her to do things that must be trying on a day-to-day basis, such as putting up with colleagues' "overly considerate" attentions.
The group's producer and songwriter, Yasushi Akimoto, once described Maeda as "stoical," adding she isn't comfortable with "wishy-washy relationships." When Akimoto talks about AKB, it's often difficult to tell if he's being naive or cynical. Like the comment he made to CNN several months ago that his sexually suggestive lyrics are merely a means of "depicting reality" so that the girls and their fans will think about such sensitive topics, his analysis of Maeda's personality glosses over what's obvious, which is that she's forced by circumstance to be Akimoto's point-person in a project that endeavors to explain how young Japanese women think and feel.
By now nobody with half a gram of critical faculty believes AKB's appeal is purely musical. Any entertainment value derived from their records or performances is qualified by their mission to be both famous and accessible. Akimoto's boldest twist on the classic idol formula is to tie sales of AKB merchandise to involvement with the group, even if the involvement is heavily controlled: the meet-and-greet sessions after shows and, especially, the "elections" to decide which member is the most "popular."
These elections may have had more to do with Maeda's decision than anything else. Contests to determine popularity are the cruelest kind, and it's said that the first time Maeda won an election the audience was clapping and calling her name just before the emcee announced the runner-up, meaning that, while everyone expected her to win, many vocalized their hope that she wouldn't. The next year, when her crown was taken away by Yuko Oshima, Maeda said she was relieved, and the year after that, when she got it back, she made a strange but revealing comment: She knew there were people who hated her, but "please don't hate AKB48."
It was too late. The haters were out in force, and it appears most of them are women. It's no secret that, unlike past "people's idols" (kokumin-teki aidoru), such as Pink Lady or Morning Musume, AKB48 is designed to appeal specifically to a preadult male sensibility, regardless of actual age. Except for elementary school girls who aspire to be in the group, females seem to have a tough time empathizing with or appreciating AKB48.
Part of it has to do with sex. Pundit and sex-paraphernalia entrepreneur Minori Kitahara has said that AKB doesn't demonstrate the "sexual self-awareness" of female K-pop artists since that would be intimidating to male fans, who still prefer their objects of desire to be demure and unyielding.
Not to mix metaphors, but the catfight in the goldfish bowl that AKB's public activities showcase — from backstage documentaries to variety-show appearances — is what keeps those male fans riveted and female nonfans repulsed. In a feature article in Aera that diverged from Matsumoto's tack, AKB was said to symbolize the "lack of freedom" that young women still have to struggle with in Japanese society, though the writer also wondered if expressing such a viewpoint wasn't "being too mean."
This cautious tone shows how tough it is to discuss the group with any sort of candor and not come across as being petty and nasty. Whatever one wants to make of Akimoto's questionable PR decisions — presenting his charges as, literally, fantasy bedmates, or having them smooch one another suggestively in TV commercials — the girls' main appeal is still their accessibility, which, in the context of Japanese show business, is a pretty good joke. The operating principle of idolhood is that fans don't feel the sort of distance from their heroes that they might feel toward performers with ambition and demonstrable talent. AKB48 just makes the relationship clearer. Consequently, Maeda's retirement seems contrived, so her fans shouldn't fret. Someone will find something for her to do.

Japan Times writer Philip Brasor is actually a very good writer, and he has lived in Japan for many years.
But there is a real attitude problem in general with the foreign writers at that paper towards AKB48- any chance to build up their own group by putting down AKB48, and they take it. Japan Times is an independent paper, whereas the Daily Yomiuri is part of the Yomiuri Shinbun group.
So Daily Yomiuri treats idol groups as part of the larger group of modern culture in Japan- cosplay, anime, drama, musicians, musical theatre, etc. They actually interview various entertainers and performers, and present positive stories that both fans and the curious can appreciate.
Writers at Japan Times tend to promote more obscure independent bands.......and I applaud them for that, but I do wish they wouldn't do the butthurt articles "wah, wah, wah, my group is so much better than AKB48, and only perverts like AKB48 and I am totally butthurt that AKB48 is popular, because everyone confuses popularity with quality music, and it's the exact opposite!!!!"
At Daily Yomiuri, they treat AKB48 as more than just a musical group- they explore the massive advertising revenue generated by the group, they have covered the fundraising / charity side of AKB48, they have done interviews with individual members. AND the Daily Yomiuri also covers the obscure independent bands as well.
The truth is that the idol business is long and well established in Japan- Idol groups are not universally loved (what music genre is universally loved?? Other than He-Man singing "What's Going On") It is generally foreigners who have the big overreaction to the whole idol business, although a lot of foreigners really get into Japanese pop culture.
To sum it up, I think the Japan Times is a good paper, but they really miss the boat with idol groups, and the positive nature of the Daily Yomiuri adds up to more sales and a far more comprehensive and entertaining entertainment section.
Come on Japan Times, you got to ask yourself- what's going on?

I was able to hold a meeting with Atsuko Maeda the other day. I had passed her by in places like the studio, but did not have time to sit down and talk to her since that day in Saitama Super Area.
About AKB, her peers, her juniors, her fans, and about her own future…
Though she is not good with words, she shared her sincere thoughts with me.
I was touched to see that the shy 14 year old girl that always hid in a shell had matured into a 20 year old woman, who cared for others and shared those feelings with me.
Although she is still not good with words, because of that I felt I understood her raw and direct feelings.
And the shy expression she shows every now and again is the same “Acchan” I knew.
Anyhow, Atsuko Maeda will be graduating after the Tokyo Dome concert and the AKB theater performance on the following day. (detailed schedule will be announced on a later date.)

On July 16th, AKB48’s Maeda Atsuko participated in a handshake event at Marine Messe in Fukuoka.
This marked Maeda’s last handshake event as a member of AKB48. She started by saying, “Time passes by really fast, this is really my last,” and continued, “After graduating from AKB, I think my opportunity to see everyone like this will decrease. That’s why I want to burn this day into my mind and make memories.”
Additionally, Takahashi Minami announced that the group’s 4th album will be titled “1830m“. The album shares the same title as AKB48’s 3-day concert at Tokyo Dome, ‘AKB48 in TOKYO DOME ~1830m no Yume~‘, which will be held from August 24th to the 26th. 1830 represents the distance between AKB48 Theatre and Tokyo Dome. Takahashi expressed, “It took 7 years, but it’s a new start!”

On August 19, it was announced that AKB48’s Maeda Atsuko, who will graduate from the group on August 27, will parade around the AKB48 stage in Akihabara around 3:30 PM on the 27th to say goodbye. Fans are expected to gather en masse around the parade route to catch their last glimpse of Maeda as a part of AKB48.
Maeda has been with the group for 6 years and 8 months since she joined in December 8, 2005, when only 7 audience members showed up at their auditorium meant for 250 people. (Subsequently, the group was unable to make their public debut.) Persevering through difficult times, Maeda helped AKB48 become Japan’s foremost popular group and gained the nickname “Fixed Ace”. She will graduate in front of an audience over 30,000 times more than the group’s first stage as 229,096 applications (for tickets) have been sent in so far.
As the number of applications for tickets exceeded expectations, Maeda thought about fans who failed to be selected in the lottery and hoped, “It might be direct, but is it not possible for me to just greet them?” Subsequently, plans for her parade were made, and her final run with the group will occur on the route that runs from Tashiro Doori right outside the AKB48 theater to the overpass above Akihabara Station on the JR Yamonote line. She will bid farewell to fans on the route that will take her to the theater. Her final performance will begin at 6 PM on August 27.

In exactly 1 week, Maeda Atsuko's graduation show will be held at the AKB48 Theater. Starting at 18:00JST on August 27th. After 6 and a half years in the group, she will finally move on from AKB48.
As expected of the graduation of AKB48's ace, a staggering 229,096 ticket applications have been sent in for Acchan's last show in AKB48. Unfortunately the AKB48 Theater can only accommodate 250 people, meaning that the chance to win a ticket is 1 in 916.
But not all is lost for fans. Acchan asked management for an opportunity to greet all the fans, including the ones that won't be able to see her last appearance at theater. And so before the show starts, starting at 15:30JST, Acchan will be driven around the streets around Akihabara station in a procession about 650m long, past the Don Quihote, to bid farewell to the public.
Acchan's gradaution show will also be broadcast live on the HEY!HEY!HEY! special [HEY!HEY!HEY!Kinkyuu 2-jikan Special Konya ga Saigo! Maeda Atsuko AKB48 Sayonara Raibu-sei Chuukei] on Fuji TV starting at 19:00JST. The first half of the program will show the history of AKB48, important memories of Acchan, and messages from various AKB48 members to Acchan. The second half of the program will be the live broadcast from the theater.

The members who will be performing at Maeda Atsuko’s graduation concert on August 27th have been announced.
All members of Team A will be joining Maeda on stage, including Iwasa Misaki, Ota Aika, Oya Shizuka, Katayama Haruka, Kuramochi Asuka, Kojima Haruna, Shinoda Mariko, Takajo Aki, Takahashi Minami, Nakagawa Haruka, Nakata Chisato, Nakaya Sayaka, Maeda Ami, and Matsubara Natsumi, along with research student Muto Tomu, who was recently promoted to Team K.
They will be joined by first generation members Itano Tomomi and Minegishi Minami, as well as the rest of the senbatsu members for “Gingham Check“, Oshima Yuko, Matsui Jurina, Miyazawa Sae, Yokoyama Yui, Kasai Tomomi, Kashiwagi Yuki, Kitahara Rie, Watanabe Mayu, Matsui Rena, and HKT48’s Sashihara Rino.
As mentioned, Maeda Atsuko’s graduation concert will be held on August 27th at AKB48 Theater in Akihabara. It will also be broadcast live via Google+, YouTube, and Fuji TV’s ‘Hey! Hey! Hey!‘.

On August 26th, Maeda Atsuko gave a speech to her fans during the encore of AKB48’s final day at their Tokyo Dome concert, ‘AKB48 in TOKYO DOME ~1830m no Yume~‘.
Maeda tried to hold back tears while receiving an “Acchan” and “Atsuko” call from the crowd of 48,000 people. She raised and lowered her microphone a number of times before slowly beginning her speech.
Below is a translated speech from Maeda:

“I was shy ever since I was small. Whenever someone talked to me, I would immediately hide behind my mom. It’s a mystery that a person like me can stand in front of 48,000 people right now. I’m full of happiness.
Honestly, I’m very sad. However, it’s the path I’ve decided for myself. I would like to take a step forward from here.
To everyone who has supported someone like me as a member of AKB48 until now, thank you very very much.
(Maeda keeps her head lowered during a minute of Acchan call.)
Please continue to support AKB48 in the future. I’m really a fortunate person to be able to start my journey with so much people supproting me from behind. AKB48 was my entire youth.“

Yeah, the show has ended. IMO, the best thing about it is that Maeda didn't cry a lot during most of the show. Before the show, I already expected that Maeda is going to cry a lot, but my, I'm extremely surprised that she only cried slightly. Another thing that's worth noting, is that from the beginning until the end, I see that Maeda is far more beautiful than ever! (or is it just me who saw this? :lol:) And also, Oshima was the last giving the message to her is a good thing really. It's like Oshima's a specially important person to her.
The 48family legend has graduated!
Goodbye, Maeda! May you achieve your dream and become one of finest actresses in Japan!
It has truly been nice six years and a half. Thank you for everything you did in AKB48!
Congratulations on your graduation and please always do your best in life no matter what happens with that unique, cute smile of yours!
Don't you worry about anything because there are massive number of fans of yours always supporting you in everything you do!

Okay, honestly, I really didn't expect myself to cry. I just thought things like, "Aw! Oh, no, she's crying! :tantrum: " to certain members.
After the last song played and I realized it was Sakura no Hanabiratachi, I literally felt tears starting to gather in my eyes... :cry: :mon cry: When I tried to sing along, my voice cracked... Ahaha... :mon whimper:
Although I've accepted... this fact, if you know what I mean, I feel empty now. :mon wind: Meh, it'll go away in a few days... :mon emo:

I didn't expect to be so moved by the end of the perf and singing Sakura no Hanabiratachi along with tears in my eyes. Especially at the very end (pic related).
I wasn't here for AKB48's earlier years, but everything about them that I have came to know as a fan was amazing.
Acchan was a big part of the AKB I grew to love.. Now she won't be around the group as much anymore but that doesn't mean I'll forget her. Nor would any of the fans.

Maeda Atsuko graduates from AKB48 with a smile
On August 27th, Maeda Atsuko (21) appeared at AKB48 Theater in Akihabara, as a member for the final time, and officially graduated from the group.
Maeda joined AKB48 as the 1st generation member when she was 14 years old, and had led the group as its “immovable ace” since then.
At Maeda’s graduation performance, 28 members gathered, and each member made their farewells to Maeda. Then Maeda said toward the members, “I know we all have been through some tough times over the past 7 years. There was a time when all of us said nothing but wanted to quit, but the reason why we were able to overcome the hardships, is that we had each other, and pursued one dream all together.”
Then she looked out over the members, and said “Today, I can tell you this with a smile. Thank you very much for everything up until now.” She continued, “I love this theater, and love all of you members I danced together on this stage, and people who has supported me, so much. I’m not sure if it was long or short this past 7 years was, but I can say that it was the best 7 years. Everybody, thank you very much. This is from AKB48 team A’s Maeda Atsuko. Thank you very much.” with a deep bow. After that, the members performed the last song “Sakura no Hanabira tachi” together.
In the very end, Maeda stood on the stage alone, and said to the fans, “I’m happy to be able to come back here to you fans on the next day of the Tokyo Dome concert. This made me realized again that this is AKB48, and that I was able to stay in such a wonderful place. It was the happiness that was too good for me. I’m really happy that I was able to encounter the members, the staff members, and of course, all of you fans. Thank you so much everybody. Thanks to you guys, I was able to graduated without any trouble. I will try my best from here on. Thank you very much.” Maeda then gave a deep bow once again, and left the stage with a smile.

Maeda Atsuko makes a surprise appearance on the balcony
As we reported, Maeda Atsuko’s last performance as an AKB48 member at the AKB48 Theater in Akihabara ended not too long ago. However, a numerous amount of fans who weren’t able to get a ticket for the performance have been gathering around the theater since long before the actual performance and were hoping to catch a glimpse of Maeda in public despite the canceled parade.
The police and the theater’s security had a lot of trouble keeping the people away from the street and the entrance, since they excitedly approached every large car that was entering the theater’s proximity with the hope that some of the members – or even Maeda herself – could be inside one of them. The security kept on telling the fans that every member was already inside the theater and that there hasty actions would be futile.
However, 30 minutes after the performance, Maeda really made a surprise appearance at the balcony of the theater with a megaphone and thanked all of them for their support. The now over 500 fans became ecstatic, waved their hands and shouted her name in response. She has only been up there for around two minutes, but the excitement of her fans already reached its climax. Before disappearing again, she called out to them, “Please be safe on your way home!”
Of course the 500 fans didn’t just dissolve after her surprise appearance on the balcony and the security continued to have their hands full urging them to go back home. Many fans simply ignored them and continued to cheer for their idol.

Not really being a Maeda Atsuka fan myself, I went into watching her graduation anyways. It surprised me how I actually got very sad while watching it. Somehow it all hit me that this was the last time we'd see her as part of AKB48 and that her presence as the Ace wouldn't be there anymore. I went from not caring to almost audibly pleading for her not to leave. I still can't believe she isn't there anymore.
The send-off itself was very beautiful, with the senbatsu members saying goodbye and all. If I had been a fan since the olden days, Sakura no hanabiratachi would have had alot more weight to it and I would have cried like a baby. I almost teared up now and I've known about them for about 6 months.
It all left me with a very depressing mood, but I can understand Maeda and I respect that she made the hard choice to leave the confort and security of being AKB48s most popular member to take a shot at her dream.

Browsing quickly through the photos in this thread makes me feel really sad
More so then when I watched it - probably due to the horrible horrible youtube connection I had for the first hour and then trying to watch both the youtube stream and FujiTV simultaneously. I think I was hoping for more sad songs - I haven't had much time to listen to the album, but the ballads are really moving, and Acchan's Sakura no Hanabiratachi in particular never fails to move me.
However, in retrospect, the six special songs:
01. Skirt, Hirari
02. Aitakatta
03. Flying Get
04. Ponytail to Shushu
05. Everyday, Kachuusha
06. Sakura no Hanabiratachi
...look like a celebration, and are all important in AKB, and hence Acchan's history. It was great she got to do a final show with all of Team A followed by a performance like this with senbatsu. Showing both the AKB theatre roots and her importance within the bigger group. I will look forward to re-watching the FujiTV show.
Acchan held a special place within the group which doesn't look likely to be filled. She had this star presence which didn't just make her shine, but the entire group. When she smiled, the whole of AKB48 shined brighter. Acchan's graduation, combined with reaching the "dream of Tokyo Dome" is an era for AKB48. Who knows what the future holds, both for AKB48, and for Maeda Atsuko.
