More facts.

The average age of the current members is 17.33 years (as of 2007/10/01). They were on average 14.00 years old when they joined. The average age of new members overall is 14.80. We all know Tsunku likes 'm young and the figures confirm that. 12 and 13 years are the must popular ages for new members with 5 each.

The average age of graduating members is 19.88. But 22 years old is the most popular graduation age with 5 occurences (Abe, Yasuda, Yaguchi, Yoshizawa, Fujimoto).

Okay, something doesn't add up here. The first post that Masabi put up has a chart that shows that Yossi has had the second longest tenure in MM.
According to it, Yossi = 7 years, 20 days and Mari = 6 years, 11 months, 24 days.

Ah, I based my calculations on the join date of Mari being 1998-03-12 (from Wiki.ThePPN). The Japanese Wikipedia and the official H!P site say 1998-05-03 (the ASAYAN broadcast date). 1998-03-12 appears to be day that Tsunku announced there will be 3 new members.

If we want to discuss statistics we better base them on the same facts.

Ah, I based my calculations on the join date of Mari being 1998-03-12 (from Wiki.ThePPN).

That date was when Tsunku told them he was gonna add more members.  That was before they'd even held the auditions I think. 2nd gen met MM for the 1st time on 20th April (but not broadcast until 3rd may).  (I wrote a lot of that part of the wiki page with all the dates, lol).  A lot of people go by the Asayan broadcast dates but I think the dates they actually happened are more important.
I dunno what date you'd use for the 1st gen.  970820 - given the 50,000 cd challenge to win a record deal, 970908 - Tsunku names the group Morning Musume, 971130 - they succeed in the 50,000 cd challenge and get a record deal.

just got finished watching some asayans

their first single COULD'VE been [they had to choose]:
- Dounika Shite Doyoubi - Nakazawa wanted this one.  the dance looked awkward and tsunku laughed his ass off at it, couldn't stop laughing
- Usotsuki Anta - laughed his ass off at this dance too
- Morning Coffee - Iida, Abe, and Ishiguro wanted this - originally had a pretty complicated dance, and a different background track (a little different)
Fukuda seemed torn between Dounika and Usotsuki

I like all these songs so I didn't care, but what would other people think if one of these were their first single??

Interestingly, in current members (and a recently graduated one) according to the chart:
Miki had solos in 93% of her singles.
Reina and Koharu have had solos in 87.5% of theirs.

Combine this with Aika's, Junjun/Linlin's, and Aichan's, and I wonder if recently they've been distributing lines more evenly? I guess Maki took everything up back when. Also, it illustrates how they're leaving Shige out to dry (which is probably a good thing...).

Another factor to keep in mind is how many solo lines a member gets. Just getting one is something but in some members cases it seems that they pretty much dominate the whole song. Which is a poor move since they neglect all the other fanbases. Ok its not effected me to bad but i know some who now wont buy the Morning Musume cd if certain members don't get any lines or the worse of the two scenarios they wont buy the new if certain members get what they deem to be an unfair proportion of the lines.
