General Japanese Movie Thread

Japan’s B-actioner scene remains active with one of their latest features SUKEBAN HUNTERS, the first of two feature films based on a 17-minute YAKUZA HUNTER short film from directors Kazufumi Nakahira and Shinichi Okuda. An extended NSFW trailer has just been released. The film, which pays homage to Toei’s FEMALE PRISONER #701 movies of the 1970s, stars AV model Asami (THE MACHINE GIRL) and Rena Komine. Also featured is Japan-based American stunt actor Chuck Johnson. SUKEBAN HUNTERS: SOUKATSU NAGURIKOMI SAKUSEN and its sequel SUKEBAN HUNTERS: JIGOKU NO KETTOU are both due out in Japan this summer.

Domestic films set box office record in 2009

Thu, January 28, 2010 (5:25am EST)

On Thursday, the Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan (also known as Eiren) announced its data on the state of the Japanese movie industry in 2009. Box office revenues for domestic films reached an all-time high, while foreign films also saw a significant increase. Domestic film revenue increased for the second year in a row, gaining 1.3% in 2009 to hit ¥117.3 billion. Foreign films saw a drop in 2008, but they bounced back last year to ¥88.7 billion, a 12.3% improvement. These numbers help reinforce the general "hoga boom" trend in recent years, where domestic productions have been gaining a larger share of the market. Total revenue (domestic and foreign) was up 5.7% at ¥206 billion, the second-highest total in history (2004 was close to ¥211 billion). Although the number of films released (762) was lower than in 2008 (806), attendance was up from 160 million to more than 169 million.

In terms of box office grosses, the top ten domestic films were:
1. ROOKIES -Sotsugyo- (¥8.55 billion)
2. Pokemon: Arceus and the Jewel of Life (¥4.67 billion)
3. 20th Century Boys: The Last Chapter - Our Flag (¥4.41 billion)
4. Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance (¥4.00 billion)
5. Amalfi: Megami no Hoshu (¥3.65 billion)
6. Detective Conan: The Raven Chaser (¥3.50 billion)
7. Gokusen: The Movie (¥3.50 billion)
8. Yomei Ikkagetsu no Hanayome (¥3.15 billion)
9. Yatterman (¥3.14 billion)
10. Crows ZERO II (¥3.02 billion)

The top three foreign films were:
1. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (¥8.00 billion)
2. Red Cliff: Part II (¥5.55 billion)
3. Michael Jackson's This Is It (¥5.20 billion)

Some of the movies I watched recently.

Masked Girl - A low-budget Kamen Rider ripoff with a schoolgirl. It's so corny.
My Girlfriend, The Ultimate Weapon - Based on the manga. Really boring.
Dance, Subaru! - Really good. I've liked these type of movies since I was a kid.
Saigo No Yakusoku - TV movie with Arashi. I really liked it. And it was fun trying to guess which one of them five was the terrorist. Yeah, I guessed wrong.
Dororo - Based on Osamu Tezuka's comic about a guy in the sengoku period that needed to kill 48 demons to get his body parts back. Very entertaining. There was supposed to be 2 more sequel movies planned.
Amalfi Rewards Of The Goddess - Kidnap, chase around the city movie. It has a great cast. The movie itself is alright, nothing great though.
Detroit Metal City - Really funny stuff. My fave part was when a girl rock band was playing and he jumped down with a metal chain (against his own will). Guess what happens? XD

Can't wait for Saru Lock The Movie: http://saru-movie.jp/index2.html

Official Site: http://www.sp-movie.com/

So happy to see they're making it at last. And most of the original cast is listed.
There are zero interesting pics there right now though... so here's a screencap of Yoko from the Ryouma Den special (yeah, she's in that too!).

A friend alerted me to a new J-themed movie:

Trailers can be misleading but I guess this story is at least more realistic than, say, "Lost In Translation."

The Harimaya Bridge
« Reply #9 on: April 27, 2010, 04:29:57 AM »
Saw HARIMAYA BRIDGE on Sunday. So-so experience. Standard "Japan in the sticks" cinematography. Difficult to watch Japanese actors reciting Japanese dialog that was likely translated from English and being directed from an American POV. Story uneven and most of the characters weren't very believable but that might be me. Plenty tranquil moments inspired by bobora cinema. The kind of movie that's good for something like HIFF or high school social studies but kind of inferior when compared to The Rest (e.g. OKURIBITO).

Ultimately the feel is more Japanese than American and that's reflected in the credits, three-quarters of which are Japanese in origin (incl funding, sponsorship). And a good theme song by misono, who played kawaii to the hilt!

shit this looks dope man, like psycho thriller, everyone driving like madmen! “Shikeidai no Elevator” 死刑台のエレベーター

anything with Hiroshi Abe is awesome.

Well duh, it's a remake of the French movie of the same name. Also features Saori Hara, the porn star??

Akira Ogata (Boy’s Choir, The Milkwoman) is set to direct Shikeidai no Elevator, a Japanese remake of Louis Malle’s 1957 French film “Ascenseur pour l’échafaud” (Elevator to the Gallows) with the blessing of the late director’s son, Manuel Cuotemoc Malle.

In the original version, Maurice Ronet plays an ex-Foreign Legion parachutist named Julien and Jeanne Moreau plays his lover, Florence. Together they hatch a plan for Julien to murder Florence’s husband in his office and then execute the perfect getaway by rappelling out the window. Instead, a simple mistake leads to him getting trapped in an elevator over night as a young couple steals his car and Florence mistakenly believes he’s taken off with another woman.

In the new version, Hiroshi Abe will play a charming doctor and Michiko Kichise will play the wife of a medical company president. The young couple will be played by Keiko Kitagawa and Tetsuji Tamayama.

“Shikeidai no Elevator” is slated for release in Japan next Fall.

Watched Premonition... it's been a while since I saw a Japanese horror movie, but I think this one gave me several traumas  :nervous

There are much better movies out there for sure, but still.. I can't watch a 5 year old girl burn to death  :O :bleed eyes:

I've seen that movie quite a few times, it's quite good, unlike most other J-Horror flicks. 8)

Just watched this film for at least the 10th time, one of my faves from the last 5 years, highly recommended if you haven't seen it. :thumbsup

The Negotiator. Couldn't stand up to its great tv series iteration. Very unoriginal stuff.
Saru Lock fared a little better, but not much.

Girl Who Leapt Through Time. Which was a little more entertaining.

And Mutant Girl Squad. Which I actually liked, with its funny and over-the-top action.
It had 3 directors, try and see the difference they bring to the chapters.

One of my 'guilty pleasure' movies, no why idea why I like it so much, good film but for some reason probably seen it close to 20 times. First it was a novel, then an anime, magna and then a movie, sort of an unknown film but really quite interesting, nice change of pace if you're looking for something different. :yep:
