Are there any figure skaters here?

Come on. You know skating is kick ass.

I watch it from time to time. If you can watch it without thinking "this is gay" you see that it is indeed a great demonstration of athleticism mixed with musical artistry. To any naysayers I'd often say, "Let's see you try try spinning at a rate of 100+ RPM on a blade that's the width of a nickel and not get dizzy."

I went skating once when I was in middle school. It sucked because three of my friends who were hockey players kept messin' with me and another friend who couldn't skate.

I've seen a few skating events. Some of the stuff people do is cool lookin', but I got annoyed the last time I saw it because there was this guy who I guess was supposed to be the "Bad Boy" of figure skating. His skating seemed good, but the interview bit he did was lame, so I turned it off.

I like watching ice skating. The girls are so fine and elegant too ;) The guys are freaking beasts! It is amazing how they can spin the way they do.

So, KT and I went to watch the STARS ON ICE show this past Thursday. It was Brian Orser's farewell tour, and since we've been fans of his for a while we wanted to go see him one more time.  I had debated whether or not I would bring my camera with me, as the lighting and nature of figure skating shows were such that pic quality would be questionable at best unless you had a flash. Combine that with the fact that during shows like these, the people in charge often forbid flash photography while the skaters perform as it can be disorienting to them, which can be dangerous when you're skating around and jumping and spinning and all that. In the end I chose to bring it anyway, in the off-chance that there might be an autograph session later on after the show (which, the ended up not happening, btw).

Anyway when we got there I bought the booklet thing with the tour stats and cast member info. It also included a printout that listed who would be skating what programs and when. Now the cast list had the usual veterans who had been a part of the tour for a few years. However, as KT and I scanned it, THIS definitely caught our attention.

(http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/9219/andoprogramsk8.th.jpg) (http://img262.imageshack.us/my.php?image=andoprogramsk8.jpg)

That's right! HOLY FUCKIN HELL ANDO MIKI was skating in the show!!! (http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c340/J-F-C/A_w00t.gif) Not only that, but she'd be skating to Mikazuki!!! Granted, KT and I figured it would be the english version, but still...THE OTHER MIKITTY WAS IN PEG SHEETY!!!

Almost instantly, my thoughts turned to me camera (thanking Miki-sama that I chose to bring it), and the realization that...OH RIGHT! My camera can take video too!!! Therefore, here you go folks. KT and I were sitting about 100 metres from ice level (damn good seats, considering ice-level seats had been pre-sold). My camera takes videos in a raw, uncompressed AVI format, so Ando's 4 minute program ended up being over 300MB. :o  I've therefore used VDub to compress the video to be Xvid encoded so that it should be more manageable for everyone to DL it.  The video quality isn't the best (pardon my shaky hands at certain moments, I was just giddy :D), but the good acoustics at the MTS Centre (http://www.mtscentre.ca/) make up for it. The file is up on my DivShare (http://www.divshare.com) account, so it shouldn't expire unless I remove it myself from my account there.

I was so shocked that Miki actually managed to win the world's (only just, after a brilliant FS by Mao), it's great to see her coming back after such a disappointing Olympics. If only she can use "I believe" in  competitions  :P

where he and Kuno_Thunder was talking about skating...WHAT WOULD Brian Boitano DO!?

Eh, I just enjoy a pretty skirt on skates, here was some pix I posted a few months ago:

If I were still a tween, I'd probably be serious in ice-skating only for the pretty costumes.

I like watching ice skating. The girls are so fine and elegant too ;) The guys are freaking beasts! It is amazing how they can spin the way they do.

Yeah Thimas, how do their butts spin like that, eh? Ice dancing doesn't get enuff props tho!!

Anna Grigorievna Semenovich (Russian: А́нна Григо́рьевна Семено́вич, born March 1, 1980 in Moscow) is a Russian retired competitive ice dancer, singer, actress and model.

Early in her career, she skated with Maxim Kachanov. They competed at the 1994 Goodwill Games and placed 5th. She teamed up with Vladimir Fedorov in 1995. They won the Finlandia Trophy twice[1][2] and competed on the Grand Prix of Figure Skating. The highlight of their partnership was competing at the 1998 World Figure Skating Championships, where they placed 15th. Their partnership ended in 1999 and Semenovich teamed up with Roman Kostomarov for one season. With Kostomarov, she is the 2000 Russian bronze medalist and competed at both the 2000 European Figure Skating Championships[3] and the 2000 World Figure Skating Championships.

Following the end of that partnership, she briefly paired with Denis Samokhin, placing 4th at the 2001 Russian Championships, but was eventually forced to retire due to injury.

shit she's flexible?? why didn't I notice her before

Sasha Cohen

A huge part of having a healthy body is flexibility. In fact, it’s one of only three measurements of physical fitness that we remember from the Presidential physical fitness tests issued to us in grade school. And, call it a hunch, but we’re thinking that Barrack Obama would have nothing but fist bumps to give Sash Cohen, the figure skater, Olympian, and reality television sensation.
Vital Stats:

Birthday: 10/26/1984
Nickname:Splasha, Sashy, Sasha

Yeah man, Sasha Cohen is crazy flexible.  The US has always had strong women single skaters over the years.  Canada, not so strong, tho Joannie Rochette is doing well.  Better than Jennifer Robinson of Josee Chouinard ever did.

... there's a figure skating thread, oh my god 8D This makes me happy.

I don't know why, but during the Olympics I got stupidly hooked on figure skating~! I live tweeted all the events (apart from the ice dancing, which I didn't watch) and I'm stupidly excited about the World Championships (even though a number of prominent skaters have said that they'll pass on the World Championships in order to go pro/focus on other things) :DD

I usually hate winter and cold, but the Olympics actually made me go outside and try out my skating skills, ahahhaa. It was so much fun! I haven't skated since... primary school, I was surprised I didn't fall over more often :D

R.I.P. to a man who was an artist both on the ice and on the canvas (he was also a known painter), and more importantly, an rebel who's flamboyant style has been attributed by many to have helped push the evolution of artistic side (particularly in the men's discipline) of figure skating.

Asada Mao's comeback seems to go very well..

Quote
BEIJING —

Three-time world champion Mao Asada made a strong return to the Grand Prix series on Friday, finishing first in the women’s short program at the Cup of China.

The Japanese skater executed her trademark triple axel to open her routine and topped the short program with 71.73 points, comfortably ahead of Rika Hongo of Japan, who was second with 65.79 points. Courtney Hicks of the United States was third with 62.38 points.

“It went just as I pictured it,” Asada said. “I was nervous before I started. I wasn’t able to skate that well in practice and just tried to use the nervous energy to my advantage. I hope I can carry this momentum over into the free program.”

Asada, the 2010 Olympic silver medalist, took a year off from competitive skating but announced in May she would make a comeback.

Anna Pogorilaya of Russia, the 2015 European bronze medalist, was fourth, followed by Zijun Li of China. World bronze medalist Yelena Radionova under-rotated a triple toe loop and finished sixth.

World champion Javier Fernandez of Spain topped the men’s short program with 93.19 points in his season debut. Boyang Jin of China was second with 90.05 points, while Sergei Voronov of Russia was third with 80.99 points.

The women’s and men’s events conclude Saturday with the free skate. The Cup of China is the third event of the International Skating Union’s Grand Prix series.

Anna Cappellini and Luca Lanotte of Italy finished first in the ice dance short program with 66.39 points. Madison Chock and Evan Bates of the United States, the 2015 world silver medalists, were second with 65.36 points, followed by Elena Ilinykh and Ruslan Zhiganshin of Russia with 63.54.
