The popular idol group AKB48 is getting their first documentary film in theaters. Titled "DOCUMENTARY of AKB48 to be continued," the movie covers the group's activities throughout this year, using footage from over 1,000 videotapes.

The documentary includes the production process behind each of their singles, their concerts at Yokohama Arena and Yoyogi National Gymnasium, their senbatsu events, last year's appearance at Kohaku Uta Gassen, and their visit to Anime Expo. Viewers will get a glimpse of the idols' joys and troubles, their growth over the year, and their dreams for the future.

"DOCUMENTARY of AKB48" will open on January 22, 2011, in select Toho Cinemas across the country. A website has launched for the movie, containing more information about the contents and the participating movie theaters.

THIS EXPLAINS MANY THINGS.

While I was at the AKB48 panel at Anime Expo 2010, there were several Japanese guys with cameras panning around and filming the audience for a while before anything started. I just assumed it was general press, but their equipment was way too professional for that. One cameraman took a liking to me because I had an AKB sticker on. He filmed me and my area for a minute as I flashed V signs at the camera. If that somehow gets in, I will be humiliated and immortalized at the same time.

A lot of the forum people who went to the Japan Expo in Paris 2009 also made it onto the Paris DVD and/or the Nemousu episode, and it really is great to be on a piece of official AKB48 related show or product. Embarrassing as it may be

What more can a fan (foreign one at that) ask for more than actually being a part of an official AKB production?

I couldn't find the source anymore but I remember reading somewhere that Sakura no Shiori director Iwai Shunji will be directing this. If it's anything like the intro for that PV, then I'll be very happy indeed.

A few more details have been revealed about the AKB48 documentary movie that was announced last month. Most notably, the movie is being supervised by acclaimed director Shunji Iwai ("All About Lily Chou-Chou," "Hana and Alice"), who previously directed the music video for the group's song "Sakura no Shiori." The movie's full title is "DOCUMENTARY of AKB48 to be continued: 10 Nen Go, Shoujotachi wa Ima no Jibun ni Nani wo Omou no Darou?" Female director Yuri Kanchiku ("Tenshi no Koi") is in charge, with supervision from Iwai and planning from AKB48 producer Yasushi Akimoto. The official website for the film has been updated, and it will reportedly feature a new image of AKB48 every day until the theatrical release on January 22, 2011. AKB48's official YouTube channel has also posted a trailer for the movie.
