DALLAS -- Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki might be playing the role of host to the NBA's best talent for the All-Star Game, but a few other reserves announced Thursday know their way around.

Nowitzki, who narrowly missed being voted in as a starter for the first time in his career, is the Mavericks' lone representative in the Valentine's Day event at Cowboys Stadium. It will be the ninth consecutive All-Star appearance for Nowitzki, who surpassed the 20,000-point milestone earlier this season and ranks seventh in the NBA in scoring (25.2 points per game).

Kobe-LeBron ads feature gun slang

NEW YORK -- An advertisement featuring the NBA's two biggest superstars includes a gun reference, the same week two players were suspended for carrying firearms to the locker room.

The Nike ad, which appears in several publications including Sports Illustrated and ESPN The Magazine, has LeBron James on one page and Kobe Bryant on the other. Along with the slogan, "Prepare For Combat," is a quote from each player showing how tough he is.

Bryant's blurb says: "I'll do whatever it takes to win games. I don't leave anything in the chamber."

The chamber in a gun is the compartment that holds the bullet before it is fired.

"The Nike print ad featuring Kobe Bryant was intended to illustrate his all out play and commitment on the basketball court," Nike said in a statement. "It is a commonly used reference for shooting the basketball and no offense was intended."

Bryant wants 'old-school' rules again

PHILADELPHIA -- When the Boston Celtics host the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday things are bound to get a little physical between the two bitter rivals who have combined to win 32 of the 62 titles in NBA history.

That's quite all right with Kobe Bryant. He'd like to raise the stakes and increase the contact.

"I'm old-school," Bryant said after scoring 22 of his 24 points in the second half of the Lakers' 99-91 win at Philadelphia on Friday.

"I'd like for us to go back to the old rules," Bryant said. "Get rid of the 'crutch defense,' known as the zone defense, and have guys guard man-to-man and stuff like that [and allow] hand checking and all that. I think that's better basketball."

The league started to allow zone defense at the beginning of the 2001-02 season. Before then, if a player attempted to guard a space on the floor rather than another player, the team would be whistled for illegal defense. The offending team would receive a warning from the officials for the first instance of illegal defense and would be charged with a technical foul for each subsequent violation.

Hand checking first became outlawed at the start of the 1994-95 season and shortly thereafter, in 1997-98, defenders became prohibited from using their forearms to guard against players facing the basket. In 1999-2000, the league eliminated all contact by a defender with his hands and forearms both in the backcourt and frontcourt, except on offensive players who caught the ball below the free-throw line extended.

Lakers' Fisher: Big salary hit not likely

BOSTON -- If NBA owners ask players to give back an inordinate amount of money in collective bargaining talks, those talks at All-Star Weekend probably won't last long.

That was the implication from union president Derek Fisher of the Los Angeles Lakers in the wake of a report on SI.com that owners will seek to cut the players' share of revenues from 57 to 45 percent.

"I don't foresee any situation where we agree to a deal that flips the percentage in that manner, but there are a lot of ways to get to a destination or a goal," Fisher told ESPN.com.

Owners are expected to make their first formal proposal to the players' union in the coming days, and the sides have scheduled a collective bargaining session for All-Star Weekend, Feb. 12-14.

Kobe passes West as Lakers scoring leader in loss to Grizzlies

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Kobe Bryant got the Los Angeles Lakers' franchise scoring record, but the Memphis Grizzlies spoiled the celebration.

Bryant scored 44 points, passing Jerry West as the Lakers' career scorer, but it wasn't enough as the Grizzlies got 22 points and 17 rebounds from Zach Randolph to defeat the Lakers 95-93 on Monday night.

"It's a great honor to say the least [because] of the great players that have played here and the tradition we have," Bryant said of becoming the Lakers' career leading scorer. "[West] taught me so much when I was 17 years old. He showed me a lot about the game, the jump shot and spin moves and all the others.
