...More Power needed to support more than 1TB Storage
I'm not a gamer (but I was), the new release getting faster and faster, I can't keep up.
Thats about 7TB? I know someone around here has more.
...I recently upgraded nearly everything when my pc died on me suddenly after thanksgiving, but I was on a tight budget and so had to settle with an ECS mobo and an XFX gfx card when I would've preferred something a little more name brand. I don't play many games, so all I care about is to be able to watch hd-video smoothly, which this baby does beautifully.
Those 500GB drives are too expensive for me.I am waiting for the 1TB drives to come down a bit, currently spending about 200 euro's per 500GB (that includes the USB case) but they are coming down in price almost weekly.
And well over a thousand CD-Rs and about half a dozen 100 disc spindles of DVDs.I am NOT going to count mine :)
A rough estimate is that my storage requirements increase at about 10-15GB/day.I am at about the same GB/day but almost non of them is porn, 90% of that is 'watch and delete'
Yes, I have a lot of porn :P
Those 500GB drives are too expensive for me.
Which psu did you buy? 1000w psu isn't necessary for that kind of computer. Quality 750w or 850w unit like Silverstone ST85ZF (http://www.silverstonetek.com/products-85zf.htm) can handle FX60&SLI 8800GTX with ease :)
CPU: 1.6 core duo
RAM: 2GB DDR2 533mhz

man, i want a new notebook (preferably a sony sz)
Motherboard : Asus P5S800-VM
CPU: 2.67 Pentium 4
Ram: 512mb DDR
HD: 240GB SATA
VGA: GeForce 6600
Optical Drive: Samsung DVD-rom & Samsung cd-RW drive
Floppy Disk drive (just because i need to install the raid driver)
Monitor: Lg flatron F700B 17"
Logitech Wireless keyboard &optical mouse combo (i forgot the serial)
Black case :p
I really need to buy more RAM...
...I noticed both my mobo and psu has 20+4pin power connectors. Would it be better to use the extra 4 pins or should I just stick to 20 pins like I have been doing?
I plan on convincing my parents for a new laptop for my 20th bday(actually it would be a 19/20th birthday as they didn't get me anything for either >_>) which just passed, I was looking for something no bigger than 14" which I can customize and I found this
HP Pavilion dv2000z customizable Notebook PC
RD140AVWhich totals to be a little under a 1000USD. I plan on buying more memory later as it would save some money. It's mainly going to be used while I'm at school as I'm probably going to spend quite a bit of time there this semester. I was thinking either this or a macbook. What do you guys think?

I might get a new one, but I'll have them fix it first since this thing is still new so it's still under store warranty.
NAzu... i envy your processor's speed.... hehehehe
Western Digital WD5000YS
Areca ARC-1260 16-port RAID
eh, i already expect drives to fail. the question is whether they fail within a RAID array, or on their own. i have no qualms with purchasing a couple hard drives each year, since im already doing so in a RAID-less config. it's just about getting the data onto a more secure system.I had the same idea, but remember, after a few years you are only buying *replacement* disks, not extending your storage!
me, regret now buy sli board.. didn't even use it.. coz no money to buy 2X at a time lor..
There's no point in SLI unless you have stupid amounts of money to spend on computer. One high end videocard like 8800GTX is more than enough even with high resolutions and details.
I would user a deeper case next time if given the choice. While this case is normally very spacious, the EVGA 8800GTX is a VERY long card, and with 2 of them I invaded most of the HD mount space! Though the cables run very cleanly in this case, especially if you braid and re-route the front panel connectors to go behind the drive cadge.
^ wah..why pick seagate? much cheaper? i'm into samsung or western digital hdd only.. samsung for fast access rate and wd for realibility..For some reason WD hdd always (well many times) fail on me. Every other brand of hdd i've used are still in good condition.
me dunt hav money.. really want to buy hdd.. full of h!p files, copied from huggumwuggums..
what's the best gaming laptop out there currently? i jus bought my toshiba laptop a few months ago TOSHIBA MSAT010AIV10 1.6GHz, 0.99 Gb of RAM cant seem to find the video card name but it cant play any new games decently...
For some reason WD hdd always (well many times) fail on me. Every other brand of hdd i've used are still in good condition.
"Machine Name: iMac
Machine Model: PowerMac6,1
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (3.3)
Of all the iMacs, the G4 "desk lamp" iMac was by far the prettiest and most elegant. I'd gladly pay a premium for one if someone could fit a Core 2 Duo chip into it.

Guys (and gals), anyone can recommend me a good video card that can run modern game well (max setting). I prefer Radeon as I had bad experience with NVIDIA chip a few times. I use LCD TV so the only resolution I'll be using is 1360x768 or 1200x1024. I haven't kept up with all up to date technology, so I'll appreciate any suggestion. Is the direct10 video card series worth waiting for?
considering that there are a good number of users that have an AMD64 FX + 7900-SLi-or-better setup, the PSU doesn't have to be anything particularly special. nowadays, the best way to treat your computer right is to get a mobo with at least 8-phase voltage regulators.
Actually 8-phase voltage regulator isn't that necessary for C2D's as they consume less powet than A64's and a LOT less than Netburst architecture cpu's (Pentium 4/D). For example the popular Intel Bad Axe 2 (I975X chipset) mobo has an 6-phase voltage regulator and it's great even for hardcore overclocking.
thanx for d info.. been waiting for reply for this.. can u explain about differences of ddr2 ram..You'd have to upgrade your cpu, mobo and ram if you were going to swap to AM2. So I recommend Core 2 Duo if your going to upgrade your cpu. For the ram question, obviously the 800MHz is faster than 667MHz if we are talking ram with same latencies. I'd pick the 800MHz stuff cos the difference in price is so small. Here's a suggestion for a nice Core 2 Duo rig:
me now using amd64 (s939) so using ddr400(coz everyone grab ddr400 instead of ddr333)..
if i wanna change to am2, should i buy ddr800 or just grab ddr667? what's the diff?
or should i wait for quad core? playing gothic 3 so laggy coz the game need dual core..
wow.. thanx tg.. u really help me to clear something out.. so if just for gaming there are no really different(major).. now i know.. thanx a lot..
for now, anyway. gaming nowadays places more importance on the graphics card. but there's no telling if some company comes up with some sort of deeply immersive game that demands more cpu power (namely multi-threaded), wherein suddenly 4x1 quad cores would be more advantageous. but since that's not terribly likely to happen, or at least between now and the next time you want to upgrade, not a big deal.Actually even now the Supreme Commander supports quad core cpu's. So I think there will be more games in the near future to support +2 core cpu's.
Just made a budget PC for family use.

recently i heard a strange new about X1650xt pawn a high end nvidia(hope its not 8800gtx).. can anyone confirm this or gimme some info on this.. my fren read it somewhere and cant trace back the source..
first heard it like OMG.. new tech vs old.. seem like UNBELIEVEABLE..
thatguy, where r u? can someone answer my question..
now if got money also cant choose either amd64 x2 5000+ or intel core2 duo e6400..
the radeon X1650 performs very very well for a mid-range card. chances are you misread, it should be compared to the geforce 7800 series. if you want top-of-the-line, there's nothing better than the 8800GTX. if you can only afford mid-range, then the radeon X1650 is actually a better choice---except X1650 does not support DX10. keep in mind that there are no DX10 games out yet, so even though it's possible for the radeon X1900 to beat single-card nvidia 8800 in some games, once DX10 comes out the 8800 will perform much better. also, although the X1650 is faster than the 7800, nvidia just came out with the 8600 (mid-range), and preliminary benchmarks are looking good.
not sure what you're asking? budget-wise, you could buy the E4300 and overclock it and get as much performance as the 5000+/E6400. but if you don't want to overclock, you're better off with an AMD64 X2 (anything below the 5000+). once you get up to around the 5000+/E6400 price range, the performance-per-$ is more or less the same, depending on the motherboard and memory you buy (for now, anyway).
thanx thatguy, can i know.. u now doing degree in japan right?something like that. just a semester abroad (yes in japan) for now, but i'm sure i'll make it over here for a career (and maybe a life) in a few years.
lol Your "budget pc for family use" is better than my pc(except for the HDD's). My family pc is my old pc.
900mhz Athlon
512mb ram
radeon 7000 or something
an ugly case and crappy psu that I took from my cousin's old pc
dvd-player
broken cd-r drive
does the job though lol
Those 500GB drives are too expensive for me. I only buy the cheapest GB/$ drives I can find, which currently are $58 OEM 250GB drives (4.3GB/$). I've got 11x250GB drives, 10x200GB drives, and 8x160GB drives, for a total of at least 6TB. All stored in these nifty open silicone sheaths that I buy by the dozen.
All accessed via a nifty USB2 - 2.5"IDE/3.5"IDE/SATA cable. Plus, misc storage in 2.5" drives, CF, and SD. And well over a thousand CD-Rs and about half a dozen 100 disc spindles of DVDs. A rough estimate is that my storage requirements increase at about 10-15GB/day.
Yes, I have a lot of porn :P
wow.. 6TB.. yum yum..I just bought #28 last weekend (another 500GB) I've stopped counting the TB's but I think that brings it to 9TB total (16* 250GB, 4*320GB, 8*500GB)
--snip--
this is the biggest as i known.. anyone else who own such bada** storage capacity.. tempting.. i only got 270gb inside my rig..
O_o 9 Terrabytes! phew... that's a LOT of porn xDActually... no, all the X-rated stuff I have saved fits easily on 1 250GB.
Rick-e, how do u connect them all? 28 hdd in one pc is it?By the number 28 I think you are asking me?
By the number 28 I think you are asking me?
For me the answer is: they are in external USB boxes, I didn't actually count the two 250GB drives that I use in the computer as 'temporary storage'.
haha, sorry for the mistake.. din see b4 posting.. so mr frblckstr1.. all external mean? u hook up everything or just save it later wanna use just plug in the usb? quite troublesome.. i thinking of making one hell of storage rig.. but dunno what case to use(if can cheapo but ok - got fan at least).. use it as a file server..You might want to brush-up on your english and sentence construction, this is getting to be unreadable!
so all inside usb box.. a good idea.. mind to share some pic.. what's index file? didnt know bout that..I'll post a picture later.
so each hdd need 35W rite?More like 10W per HD unless you use highspeed drives (which I do not find usefull for external boxes)
background with a sense of what I'm trying to accomplish
I have a 5 year old daughter. Her old hand me down laptop just died. I want to get her a new computer that she can play her games on and listen to music. I'm torn between buying a whole computer system or building one with a barebones kit.
I am leaning toward building one as I think it would be fun and a way to show her what is a computer. I've heard that you can build one for a fraction of the cost of buying a new put together computer.
With that said, I'm nervous about spending money on components and it not working. I want her to have a good computer that she can learn how to use and we can LAN them together and play some game action later on when she gets a bit older.

I'll appologize if this topic has already been posted here.I've moved your post to the Hardware forum cause it might get more response here.

I'll appologize if this topic has already been posted here.Ok, first where do you live? If you live in US newegg is a reliable store with reasonable prices. If you live in some other country then would you please tell me computer shop that you know. Usually assembling barebone computers like Shuttles and similar ones requires a bit more time cos the chassis is quite cramped because there isn't that much space to work with. I recommend picking just a normal atx tower case if you have enough space for it in your desk. Small form factor (SFF) pc like Shuttle will be as stable as normal tower case pc as long as you have the Windows setup properly set up and you have assembled the parts correctly. Assembling computer from a scratch isn't hard at all and I recommend that you do it as you will learn how to do it in the future (it's fun aswell) :)
Here's a kit I just looked up. Is it ok?:
Picture of the kit:(http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/7617/1newcompmi9.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)
I like this Shuttle because it's smaller. I don't know much about the company though.
picture of the barebone kit:
(http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/4999/2newcompqh3.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)
A couple of questions:
- what is the best site for buying computers?
- what is the best barebone kit to get on a smaller budget?
- How difficult is it to assemble a barebones kit?
- will this computer be stable enough?
Thanks for taking the time to read this post. I hope someone can help me.

for real!? 62 singapore dollars? wait... is that DDR2? cause my motherboard can only take DDR RAM and that's more expensive than DDR2
Then I saw that newegg had a combo deal with the X2 3800+ and some 2gb memory with a mail-in rebate. Is the X2 3800 OEM? Usually boxed cpu's come with the heatsink so you just use that one.
My question is, would the stock hsf of the 3200+ be sufficient for the X2 3800+, or do I need to get a new fan too?
I like that one. But unfortunately my budget isn't so High.I've heard that the Areca raid cards are pretty good, though I don't any good models :P I'm building a new rig cos my laptop does not have enough juice for my use and it also lacks dvd burner. I've got the case and psu already and I've bought a used Compaq P1220 22" crt monitor (nothing beats good old CRT :D). Here's the parts for my next rig that I'm going to order this friday or next monday:
Do you know any, not to expensive, but good, RAID cards?
^^ the areca cards are very good, particularly in the 1200 series. but they're also quite expensive (for 8x ports or more), and if you aren't doing some serious data storage then they won't give you much more than your integrated intel RAID controller.I search for some reviews and as far as I cansee areca is indeed one of the best. But expensive. And for my budget I rather spend the money on an extra HDD or some more Memory because 2GB is nice but for 3d animation it is still not mush. Sometimes the usage goes up to 3gb. But as fart as I know windows xp doesn't really support mush memory. Probably I have to wait until all the first bugs of windows vista have been removed and than buy a good version.
Sometimes the usage goes up to 3gb. But as fart as I know windows xp doesn't really support mush memory. Probably I have to wait until all the first bugs of windows vista have been removed and than buy a good version.Vista is already way more stable then XP (how many patches have you seen for it compared to say Apple in the last months?)
I think no matter how stable Vista is surposed to be compared to other OS's. Vista still manages gay up things that it really should be better at.Sometimes the usage goes up to 3gb. I think no matter how stable Vista is surposed to be compared to other OS's. Vista still manages gay up things that it really should be better at.No argument there from me :)
It's a shame that MS is only releasing DX10 for Vista because half the gamers would much prefer to use XP. It just works so much better. They (MS) need to somehow force people into buying Vista, no mather what you say about 'stability' of XP SP2, it does run on 95% of the hardware (and the other 3.5% of Apple's Mac's :D)
The other problems I've had are drivers for 64bit Vista, manufacturers still only have beta drivers. Most don't support old hardware which is still good and no reason to upgrade and then I've had customers come in with their brand new Vista laptop asking me to install their broadband modem because their ISP doesn't give phone support for Vista. They end up having to buy a new modem/router because there's no Vista drivers for their modem. Little things like this are what the mainstream user shouldn't have to deal with but are having to.New modem?? I still use my aging 4 your old external ADSL modem, but its a 4-port hubs version so 'standonly', was a bit more expensive but hey you get what you pay for :)
Got all the parts together and now it's running fine. Cpu is oc'd to 2.7GHz which is pretty low cos I think this could do like 3GHz atleast if I had a better cooler. Temps are too high now (69 load@Orthos small fft's). I hope that I'll get the Tuniq Tower this week and then I will be able to oc this baby properly 8)Cool! can't wait to see how it goes.
69C :OI choosed to take the cheapest way :D It's the Pentium E2160. Couldn't wait for the Gigabyte mobos so I just bought the DFI.
did you get the E6X00 or E4X00? also i thought you were gonna get the gigabyte mobo XD
still, lookin' good. esp nice psu. i just bought some parts and will do an upgrade later this week.
Cool! can't wait to see how it goes.Vcore is now at 1.32v. Testing now 1.8@3GHz. Seems ok, did just a Super Pi 32M calculation (I know I know It doesn't stress both cores and Orthos/Prime would be better). Cpu is still cooled with the shitty boxed cooler :banghead: When I get the Tuniq I will probably lap the cpu cos I'm pretty sure that the HS is concave.
BTW What's the vcore set at?
My motherboard does not support one so I do not have anyone any more. Sometimes that is irritating because our school still delivers some very old software on floppy disks. :banghead:Strange, most still have a connector somewhere for the floppy.
(http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/1336/l1020973xk2.jpg)Nice hack, I am still trying to get the Microsoft MCE keybaord connected to the HP labtop, the standard IR port is not compatible according to HP so I'll need to find an external USB connected version somewhere (got some links need to try them)
That's my new internal USB port, currently running on my old P4 (which has no case for now, so it's just sitting out on my workbench).
if using p3 1ghz with 256mb and 40gb hdd? ok? <--- socket 370 and sd ram.. which windows best to use with this ram size? wanna use xp but sure slow one.. any lite version of xp? just wanna run mozilla, anti virus and utorrent..I am actually using a 1GHz celeron (but with 512MB memory, memory doesn't add much to the power requirements) in a small box for BT's. Including running harddrive its using only 30watts. The problem will be finding such a machine these days.
Thatguy, can u help recommend me a spec to use as a bt rig.. i'm home now and my pc 24/7.. damn my bill hike up and my father scold me.. so needed a bt rig..
if using p3 1ghz with 256mb and 40gb hdd? ok? <--- socket 370 and sd ram.. which windows best to use with this ram size? wanna use xp but sure slow one.. any lite version of xp? just wanna run mozilla, anti virus and utorrent..
any other low budget solution?
thanx frblckstr1 and nazu.. so there are'nt any xp lite version? to trouble to use linux.. maybe will have problem with utorrent.. wow 512mb.. that's huge for an ols system.. sd ram is it? got extra to sell off.. haha..Yes the 'old' memory but I had it anyway because I was replacing a server with a somewhat heavier 2.4GHz Celeron so I just put it in. The machine is also the MediaServer for some other stuff in the network so is running a database and several other services also but even this 1GHz celeron is capable of streaming 20Mbps .ts files from the network to the other equipment.
That said, a standard "vanilla" XP will still consume a lot of resources that you won't use, so you should start using nLite [link here (http://www.nliteos.com/)] to make a custom XP install. It will allow you to take out any component you don't use (especially for a BT box), such as accessories, games, themes, etc. And you can use Microsoft Virtual PC to test it out before you install it.
Might not be what you're looking for, but I'm just throwing out a bunch of ideas.
Yes the 'old' memory but I had it anyway because I was replacing a server with a somewhat heavier 2.4GHz Celeron so I just put it in. The machine is also the MediaServer for some other stuff in the network so is running a database and several other services also but even this 1GHz celeron is capable of streaming 20Mbps .ts files from the network to the other equipment.owh.. so your setup actually is more to server machine.. while i'm setting up a low power consumption pc that can use for surfing the net(my father lol) and bt allday long.. the main concern is electricity.. my amd64 machine only switch on if i wanna watch video (jap vidz and anime) / listen to my song (jap song) and gaming.. approx 12-14 hour per day only.. but i calculate the power consumption nearly 209W.. that a lot if turn 24/7.. damn my father will kill me for sure..
The havier machine is used for newgroups download, which sometimes require a par file repair, that takes a bit more CPU, with 2* 250GB and 2* 80GB drives (1GB memory) that machine draws 110W (140W at 100% CPU when its repairing a par set)
Like I said that is all done by the small 1GHz Celeron machine using only 30W! The whole 24/7 part of that (so including the file server) is using 140W/hour.Yes the 'old' memory but I had it anyway because I was replacing a server with a somewhat heavier 2.4GHz Celeron so I just put it in.
The havier machine is used for newgroups download, which sometimes require a par file repair, that takes a bit more CPU, with 2* 250GB and 2* 80GB drives (1GB memory) that machine draws 110W (140W at 100% CPU when its repairing a par set)
wow.. i dont know what is that.. mind to explain.. is it a software to edited window installation file so that only needed component(basic) only.. actually, i'm making a full 24/7 pc that eat lower power compare to my current rig.. my target right now as i stated.. is it a good choice? cause i dint know how many watt that pc will eat per hour.. maybe i use win me or xp cause just use it for surf net and bt..

Sorry but you are not reading correctly, it a *TOTAL* of 140W for *2* machines, this is what the UPS says:Like I said that is all done by the small 1GHz Celeron machine using only 30W! The whole 24/7 part of that (so including the file server) is using 140W/hour.
30W is still very small compared to Athlon64, but that's only comparing the CPU. You then need to add in the motherboard and optical and hard drives. frblckstr1's results (~140W/hr) is just about average for PIII computers. But it's still better than 200+W.
But is that the total effective load? The meter seems to show only the load on the battery, but it doesn't indicate if part of the total load is being split to the AC.Yes, Load on battery == load on 'AC' (this is a 'Backup UPS' which means it isn't running directly from the batteries but 'in parallel' and switches from AC to battery when needed, makes for a cheaper construction e.g. about half the price of a 'smart' UPS which is always running from battery, but that would not change 'the load'.
If you were to disconnect the AC, does the load still show 140W?
The spec for the intel PIII CPU series (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CPU_power_dissipation#Intel_Pentium_III) (minus the low-voltage mobile parts) is a power consumption of 20-30W.I'm guesssing those are maximum TDP's.
maybe i change my plan.. going for other low end proc.. a sempron or intel celeron d.. hurmm..No idea if you can lay a hand on an (older) laptop, but laptops have a tendency of using less power.
Question: I've been thinking about buying a new cable modem since mine has been acting up.Around here cable modems are suppllied by the cable operator, so not much choice.
i wonder if all the cable modem is the same, is there a different type of cable modem that gives u better speed and performance? is there a better brand? which one is the best to buy? i dunno much about cable modem, so before i buy, i wanna know which is the best one to get.
^ No need to change (unless you want to download files >2GB)you mean >4Go ?
Ah, correct, I am confused with some SMB limits I think :)^ No need to change (unless you want to download files >2GB)you mean >4Go ?
anyone here using ubuntu (linux) here? it seem that the 3d desktop effect are way more attractive than vista..You mean Xwindows? Linux doesn't do graphics, and yes some are nice effects.
^ why you don't try it on a Virtual PC ?No virtual PC will emulate enough graphics to do the nice 3D effects.
So I decided to build a simple BT box out of an old computer.Depends on how high quality your other computer needs to run, cheap versions might give a problem on higher resolutions.
I was looking at KVM switches so I can use the same keyboard mouse and monitor and I'm reading some mixed reactions about them.
Datalanche, have you considered overclocking the cpu? 8400's are pretty good overclockers. 3.6-3.8GHz is pretty average :)
I just bought a VisionTek ATI Radeon HD 4670 PCI Express Graphics Card (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8992593&type=product&id=1218007083797), but only later do I found out on the internet that this product tends to overheat. Now does anyone knows how do I go to prevent that? I'm asking like how to set the settings either from the ATI Catalyst Center or BIOS?With a program like rivatuner you can probably control the fan on the videocard. You can raise the rpm's on the fan so it keeps the card cooler. Other option is to get a aftermarket cooler for it. Ofc that voids the warranty and if your not experienced with computers I recommend not doing it. Other thing is that if the card overheats at stock clocks you can probably RMA it and change it for another card that doesnt have any heat problems.
With NAzu's advice (thanks NAzu!), I'm going to upgrade the PSU to a 400w Corsair and add a Radeon HD4670 video card for an additional $100 or so in a couple of weeks.
Now to wait for it all to ship...
I wouldn't get anything better than a HD4770 for that kind of a comp (assuming the motherboard has an pcie express port). Even the HD4770 might be too fast for the cpu and there would be a bottleneck. Still that would give you a good boost for games and if the old videocard is broken (sounds like it is, based on what you said) it's definitely a good idea to get new one.
 I just got that power supply a few weeks ago. Replaced, my shitty one that was pretty much a heater... but forgot to send in the rebate form... I really should send those in right away.
Waiting for my new Antec Tri-cool fan since my old one crapped out on me.
Was wondering if it would be worth upgrading my vid card for my dated computer. 939 socket Athlon X2 +3800 with Radeon x800 GTO 256-bit 256mb GDDR3. The setup itself isn't too bad for light gaming, plays most Source based games on high settings and that's all I really need it for in terms of gaming, but the vga fan sucks and it's super loud. I also get green artifacts in the black parts of divx/xvid vids. I mostly just want it to be able to play HD vids nicely and play games as well as the one I have now. I also plan to use it to share media so quiet is important to me since it's in my room. I look in newegg mostly, I've read reviews on some cards and I get mixed results on noise with most of them. My old one, half of the reviews said it was quiet so I don't trust them anymore... I haven't been using the desktop much for everyday stuff since I have a laptop, but I don't like watching vids on it. So anyone have any recommendations for around 100USD? Or should I just live with what I have until I get a newer cheap PC in a couple years?
Didn't even look at the 9600GT. Is the performance difference between the GT and the GSO that much different?http://www.guru3d.com/article/geforce-9600-gso-386-mb-review-point-of-view/ (http://www.guru3d.com/article/geforce-9600-gso-386-mb-review-point-of-view/) <- Here's a review of the GSO (that's the basic version with 386MB vram). The 512MB version will probably perform little bit better at higher resolutions and with antialiasing and anistrophic filtering. But when the price difference is that small I would just get the 9600GT if you're looking for a cheaper card. Though you can get the HD4770 which I mentioned for 99$ from Newegg. The HD4770 has considerable amount more power than the 9600GT, so you might want to think about investing 23 bucks more for the HD4770.
If I know how, I would like to upgrade the processor (currently AMD Athlon 64 3200+, 1.99GHz), but I dunno which processor is compatible with my laptop nor do I know how to switch cpu, but I would like to do it myself and learn from experience. There are very few laptops that let you upgrade the processor after you bouth the machine, I think HP have some where you could replace the AMD with another, but for the price difference in about two years you probably can buy a new faster computer.
Nice system LaJon. I have the HAF932 too and it's an awesome case. Plenty of space to work on and very good case cooling. One small problem for me is the lack of dustfilters cos we have a dog so there's lots of hair and dust.
One small problem for me is the lack of dustfilters cos we have a dog so there's lots of hair and dust.I use speaker cloth before the main air intakes to combat part of that for my server machine.
^ Thats a BIG fan on the side!230mm and there's all three of them + the 140mm at the back :D I was thinking about making dustfilters from stockings for the front fan...One small problem for me is the lack of dustfilters cos we have a dog so there's lots of hair and dust.I use speaker cloth before the main air intakes to combat part of that for my server machine.
And I use vacuumcleaner to clean that :)
hello, there, the guy w/ the HP Pavilion dv9610us laptop here.32-bit OS'es can't address the rest. And depending on the motherboard and BIOS you get between 3.0 and 3.5 GB when you put 4GB in. The rest is reserved for things as the graphics card.
I bought a 4GB (2 x 2GB) memory for my notebook, and the BIOS does show 4GB, but my os (VISTA) only shows 3GB, why?
also, I checked and my wlan card is easy to get to, so I'm thinking maybe upgrading it to a a/b/g/n wlan card, but I dunno all the details, like compatibility and such...The HP site should be able to give you some pointers in what is compatible, you said you checked, so you should already have the type number etc.? As the card is buildin you will need to be carefull to use a compatible one.
I wanna ask a couple of question to those who might give me a clear answers:
What type of memory RAM is used and the MAX capacity for each slots on:
1) Dell Dimension E510
2) Dell Workstation 370
P.S. bear in mind that those are the stock mobo that's came with it.
MOTHERFUCKER!!Well, if the pc works with another display then the problem is probably in the computer itself. If sending the display for RMA is out of the question and you dont like the idea of getting a second hand unit, then I would recommend getting a whole new system. You can get new 24" lcd displays for under 250$. Parts for a new computer arent that expensive either.
The main thing I liked about my pc, was the monitor, and yesterday without warning, it shit itself..
FUCK!! :banghead:
Actually, I don't know if the monitor itself died, or if the hardware on the pc side died..
Here's the problem.... The monitor can only connected to a Fujitsu pc via some crazy unheard of cable, and without another Fujitsu pc at my disposal, I can't tell where the problem lies..
The monitor only has one cable, and that's for the display, sound, power and remote..
Called Fujitsu, and they said I would have to send the whole pc in, and will cost between 60,000~100,000yen to repair...
That ain't gonna happen, that's for sure!!
Luckily the pc also has an RGB connection, so hooked the wife's really old CRT monitor up (about the same size as a Volkswagen), but it's doing my eyes in.. :bleed eyes:
I can find similar Fujitsu monitors on Yahoo Auction (http://search3.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/search?p=%c9%d9%bb%ce%c4%cc&auccat=2084039563&f=0x2&alocale=0jp&mode=2&apg=1), but knowing my luck, I would get one of them only to find then that the problem was with the pc, and have 2 monitors I can't use..
Maybe I should grab a cheap used Fujitsu pc without a monitor, then I could just use it for parts..
Choices!! :banghead:
Now that I have my new computer in working order, I can officially call these my new PC specs.
COOLER MASTER HAF 932 Case
COOLER MASTER 750W Modular Power Supply
GIGABYTE EX58-UD4P Motherboard
Intel Core i7-950 3.06GHz Quad Core Processor
G.SKILL 6GB DDR3 1600 Triple Channel Memory
EVGA GeForce GTX285 DDR3 1GB Video Card
Sound Blaster Audigy SE Sound Card
500GB Western Digital HD (Windows XP Pro 64)
1TB Western Digital HD (Storage 1)
1TB Western Digital HD (Storage 2)
Samsung SATA 22X DVD Burner
I don't know if this the correct thread to ask this,In general that could be the additional USB ports, audio and general quality of how it was made.
what i want to ask is...
what the difference between cheap and expensive mobo with the same chipset...
thanks for the help...
Guchi_Jnr said The display is connected with a special cable! The monitor can only connected to a Fujitsu pc via some crazy unheard of cable,Well, if the pc works with another display then the problem is probably in the computer itself. Well, this is the two mobo i consider to buy with my budgets. In basic I think the moterboards are very different:
ECS P43T-A2 (5 Years warranty) and ASUS P5QL-SE (i think 2 years warranty) the difference is almost $30
First, thanks for your trouble.FSB (Front Side Bus) is the speed with which the CPU can communicate with the other periferals like Video card and Harddisks.
and for intel chipset P43 which BUS do you think should i use
So, do you think which one is better, i don't quite understand how a BUS can affect performance.
so is it ok for taking the ECS as my mobo, since i'm not a hardcore gamer ??Pretty much the same which one you pick if you dont have strict requirements for the mobo (overclocking features, special connectors/slots etc). Just make sure the mobo has the right socket for your cpu and it supports your cpu, has right memory slots (ddr/ddr2/ddr3) and has enough sata/ide ports for your harddisks/optical drives. For basic computer user the ECS mobo is totally ok. About Foxconn having bad quality control, not sure about that. Might be same kind of things like "ASUS SUCKS!!!" and actually the guy saying that had one Asus mobo that broke down. No manufacturer has zero fault free stuff, people should remember that. Also Foxconn makes motherboards for Intel so I'm pretty sure they dont make crap stuff.
My sister always get my old pc, when I buy a new one for myself. This time hers broke down so I had to think about a new one for her or a new one for me and the old one for her
Since my girlfriend and me wanted a good entertainment system and I need a good system for games, we decided to kill some money.
My sis got my old one (P7) + a new 22" LCD and two 512MB XFX GeForce 9600GT XXX GDDR3 DVI TVo PCIe because one of the old ones makes terrible sounds. Sold them to a friend with a new cooler.
So I use now since this month(as very early X-Mas gift :w00t:) the following with a total of 2800€
CPU : AMD Phenom X4 9850 4x2500MHz 4x512kB AM2+ Box Black Editon
Cooler : Thermalright IFX-14 AMD Heatsink S AM2/AM2+
Fans : 140x140x20 Aerocool Streamliner LED-Fan silver , 2 for the cpu-cooler, 1 for the bottom of the case
Board : Asus Crosshair II Formula AM2+ NF780a HTB 5200MT PCIe ATX
RAM : 2x2048MB Kit G.Skill 4GBPI 1100MHz CL5 , two sets, in total 8GB, limit of the board :(
Graphic : 512MB MSI Geforce N9800GTX Plus-T2D512-OC GDDR3 DVI TVo PCIe , two over SLI
Sound : Creative X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Pro Series , together with the onboard sound, i can play, while my girl is watching DVD
HDD : 1000GB Samsung Spinpoint F1 32MB SATA 2 Retail , two of them, in total with one of my old hdd, 2,5TB
Blue-Ray : LiteOn DVD Blu-Ray R/RW/DL/RAM SATA
Power : Aerocool HorsePower - 1020 Watt
Case : Thermaltake Xaser VI Super Tower G4000BNS
Screen : 26" Samsung SyncMaster T260 Rose Black 5ms 20000:1 DVI-D/HDMI
Sound : Logitech Z Cinema
Keyboard : Logitech Ultra-Flat Keyboard black
Mouse : Logitech G9 Laser Mouse
TV runs over a 46" Samsung LE46A557 30000:1 Full HD 1080p since end of juli, a gift for the 1.2 Abitur of my girlfriend.
And there it goes to hell
Totally burned down. The power pack had a short circuited and four condensers burned, that shot on the 5V-line 16A through the system and completely killed everything except one RAM and the big HDD!
Just ordered a new system. For more place this time a bigtower.
I really that I can restore the data on my terrabyte-hdd, 800GB with japanese movies, doramas and my collection with mp3's and pv's from H!P. A desaster, if this is destroyed.
The harddisk itself runs, just the boot directory is gone. If I can restore the data, this wil need muuuuch time to sort everything

^ And with such a system he says he is not going to use it for games :thumbsupSarcasm? Anyways, that's a shitty videocard in the Gateway system but shouldn't be a problem since Guchi_Jnr said he's not gonna play games with it. It would be cheaper to build a computer by buying the parts separately and assembling it yourself. But if you don't have experience with computers, a comp like the Gateway is a better pick.
That being said, I might have to wait until next pay day, since one of our cats is throwing up blood tonight..Cats go first, sure hope its curable! Keep us posted.
Need to take him to the vet first thing in the morning and see what the hell is going on..
My pc is really old and falling apart, and the other day I heard something go "bang!" inside, so think it's time to replace it... Yeah??
Can't justify spending much since I'm not a gamer (have no games at all), and all I use the pc for is work related stuff, watching downloaded TV shows, ripping DVDs and playing music..
So was thinking about getting this tomorrow..

Do you guys think that'll be alright, or should I keep looking?
^ What requires 3 videocards and 16GB memory??
So, I'm building a new PC in the next month or two, here's my list so far:
...
Well, new PC is getting much closer - looks like I'll be getting it in January. I've also had a chance to revise my build with new hardware!
CPU: Intel Core i7 3930K
Mobo: ASUS Rampage IV Extreme (LGA2011)
RAM: 16gb DDR3-1600
Video: GeForce GTX 580 1536mb
SSDs: 2x Corsair Force 3 120gb in RAID 1
Optical: 12x BD-Writer
Case: Silverstone Fortress 2
PSU: Silverstone Strider ST1500 1500W, modular
OS: Windows 7 Pro 64-bit
Who ships a 690 with power saving mode on default???
Same people that ship it with a DVI to VGA adapter. :P
Probably several years ago, some of the stuff in my PC was hot shit. Anywho, here's my "budget gamer" setup:
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition
Mobo: MSI 770-C45
GPU: MSI Radeon HD6870 Twin Frozr II (with +20 MHz factory OC although I have cranked it up to 950/1100 a few times)
RAM: 8GB Corsair Vengeance LP (Black)
HDD: 320GB Western Digital SATA (used a lot) + 500GB Seagate Slim SATA (Rarely used. Probably should start loading more games onto this drive)
CD/DVD: Pioneer DVR-111D
Audio: Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio
Monitor: 24" Acer H233H (with busted power button)
Peripherals: Logitech Wave Keyboard (corded), Logitech MX400 Performance Laser Mouse, Microsoft Xbox 360 Controller for Windows
PSU: 700W OCZ GameXStream
Case: Cooler Master HAF 932
You guys have insane specs.. I'm stuck with a stock VAIO...

TV runs over a 46" Samsung LE46A557 30000:1 Full HD 1080p since end of juli, a gift for the 1.2 Abitur of my girlfriend.
And there it goes to hell :OMG: :dizzy: :depressed:
Totally burned down. The power pack had a short circuited and four condensers burned, that shot on the 5V-line 16A through the system and completely killed everything except one RAM and the big HDD!
Just ordered a new system. For more place this time a bigtower.

I really  that I can restore the data on my terrabyte-hdd, 800GB with japanese movies, doramas and my collection with mp3's and pv's from H!P. A desaster, if this is destroyed.
The harddisk itself runs, just the boot directory is gone. If I can restore the data, this wil need muuuuch time to sort everything :nervous
