Collected over time (hence some dfifferent boxes used :)

The things on top are the power supplies, one for each type of box, disk #27 is connected to the machine at the moment hence no third power supply to be seen.

I'll appologize if this topic has already been posted here.

Here's a kit I just looked up. Is it ok?:
Picture of the kit:

I like this Shuttle because it's smaller. I don't know much about the company though.

picture of the barebone kit:

A couple of questions:
  • what is the best site for buying computers?
  • what is the best barebone kit to get on a smaller budget?
  • How difficult is it to assemble a barebones kit?
  • will this computer be stable enough?

Thanks for taking the time to read this post. I hope someone can help me.

Zelichan
Ok, first where do you live? If you live in US newegg is a reliable store with reasonable prices. If you live in some other country then would you please tell me computer shop that you know. Usually assembling barebone computers like Shuttles and similar ones requires a bit more time cos the chassis is quite cramped because there isn't that much space to work with. I recommend picking just a normal atx tower case if you have enough space for it in your desk. Small form factor (SFF) pc like Shuttle will be as stable as normal tower case pc as long as you have the Windows setup properly  set up and you have assembled the parts correctly. Assembling computer from a scratch isn't hard at all and I recommend that you do it as you will learn how to do it in the future (it's fun aswell) :)

^ if you don't know much about chipsets and which components work with what, barebones will usually save you the hassle of doing the research yourself--but at the cost of not being able to pick more specifically what components you want, and in that way some things may actually end up a little more expensive.

my PC's spec changed a bit so I'll repost it:

Motherboard : Asus P5S800-VM
CPU: P4 2,67 Ghz
Ram: 1,5 GB (1gig + 512mb) DDR
HD: 250gb + 160gb Seagate SATA + 120gb Seagate ATA + 80gig Maxtor ATA
VGA: GeForce 6600 AGP
Optical Drive: Samsung DVD-rom & Samsung cd-RW drive
Floppy Disk drive
Monitor: Lg flatron F700B 17"
Logitech Wireless internet desktop keyboard + mx revolution mouse.
Simbada SimCool (forgot the type) :p

btw... the lower part of my monitor is starting to jitter a bit (just slightly, but it's jittering) does that mean it's almost dead or something? I've had this monitor for about 2 years now..

So I was thinking of upgrading my athlon 64 3200+ to an X2 while socket 939 processors are still available. I originally wanted to get a X2 4200+ but can't find those unless I go to ebay. Then I saw that newegg had a combo deal with the X2 3800+ and some 2gb memory with a mail-in rebate.

My question is, would the stock hsf of the 3200+ be sufficient for the X2 3800+, or do I need to get a new fan too?

They also have X2 4400+ in stock but costs about 60USD more and I'm really just looking for a cheap upgrade.

Is the X2 3800 OEM? Usually boxed cpu's come with the heatsink so you just use that one.
Paste a link to the deal and I'll have a look.
Otherwise I think it will be fine. The heatsinks that came with those X2's were still pretty average looking. I think it's not till you go past the 4400 that you get a bigger heatsink with heatpipes and bigger fan.
Also if it's the 65watt one then that thing will run nice and cool so you should have not problem.

^ need to be a little careful with some CPUs, particularly anything rated as "ultra-low voltage". the new intel core2 mobile cpus (such as the T5500) don't come with heatsinks even in the retail version, because intel expects those CPUs to be put into non-standard applications (such as installed in cars or point-of-sale units, which use custom cases and thus custom heatsinks).

2x Dual core Xeon 2.00 Ghz
1x Intel S5000XVN motherboard
1x Geforce 7950GT 512MB
1x 2GB FB-DIMM DDR2 RAM 667Mhz
1x 150GB S-ATA 10.000 RPM for OC
1x 300GB IDE 7.200 RPM for Backup and Data
1x 500GB S-ATA 7.200 RPM for Data
1x 120GB external 7.200 RPM for backup and Data
1x Creative Audigy 2
1x NEC DVD-RW drive
2x Samsung SyncMaster 710N monitors.
1x MGE Ellipse 1500 UPS

This is the system I have now. But I am thinking about upgrading the Hard drives. I'm thinking of an RAID 5 system because my motherboard supports it.

^ not a bad setup. i too once considered building a RAID-5 system. normally i wouldn't recommend any sort of integrated RAID, but the intel server boards tend to do fairly well. however, judging by your current hard drive setup, you may want to reconsider. for RAID-5/6, your disks must be the same size, so it's fine if you have a RAID card with 8x ports or more, since you can simply add-on extra disks until you fill your ports up. but since motherboard onboard-RAID chips tend not to have much more than 4x or 6x ports, once you fill those up you have no choice but to replace all the drives with larger ones. you may be better off getting a device that supports RAID-X (instead of -5 or -6), simply because it'll allow you to combine drives of different sizes together into a single redundant array (and not just JBOD).

im going to go with RAID-X (when i get the money), which offers single-disk redundancy (same as RAID-5) but with flexibility of upgrading one drive at a time (while still increasing accessible storage space). specifically i'm looking at the Infrant ReadyNAS NV+. it's not as speedy as a native internal RAID-5, but it gets the job done--and at a price competitive to good RAID cards by themselves. plus the software is actively developed and there are at least a dozen plugins (streaming your files, etc).

I like that one. But unfortunately my budget isn't so High.
Do you know any, not to expensive, but good, RAID cards?

I've heard that the Areca raid cards are pretty good, though I don't any good models  :P I'm building a new rig cos my laptop does not have enough juice for my use and it also lacks dvd burner. I've got the case and psu already and I've bought a used Compaq P1220 22" crt monitor (nothing beats good old CRT :D). Here's the parts for my next rig that I'm going to order this friday or next monday:

Cpu: Core 2 Duo E4400 or E6320
Mb: Gigabyte P35 DS3P
Ram: G-Skill F2-6400CL4D-2GBHK
Videocard: Ati X1050 or similar super cheapo card. This is for the time until I can afford a better videocard.
Dvd-burner: Liteon or Optiarc sata interface model.
Case+psu: Antec P160W + Corsair HX 520w
