Until now, you've come from the younger sister figure of the group to the face of the group, and a leader, and this year your role became even bigger. What are your real feelings about that?
My feelings were completely different before and after the general election. Before the election, I felt so strongly that I had to be the centre, I was dead set on it. I was living an existence where I filled my mind with thoughts of being centre, that you could say I couldn't reveal myself. But at the election, when Sasshi took the number one rank, I really felt like it was okay that I wasn't centre [laughs]. At that moment, it felt like all at once I was being freed from my restraints. After that, I returned to being myself, and I could relax again.

Ah, that's your high-spirited character. [laughs]
That's right [laughs]. I love messing around with the members,. I think my ideal now is to be recognised for who I really am, and be allowed to stand in the centre position like that.

Various things happened in 2013, but what was the thing that left the greatest impression on you?
The summer 5 Domes Tour was really exhausting. Especially days 2 and 3 of the Tokyo Dome concerts, I was physically and psychologically exhausted, but the members helped each other, and we pulled of 11 performances without incident. It really felt like a period of growth, and by overcoming great obstacles, I think we improved as a group. Individually, being able to do another solo event made me really happy. I really love being in that space. Feeling the love from all my fans, and I really want to try my best in that area.

On March 26th, you became 20 years old. For you, is 20 years old an important boundary?
It's a big thing. I really want to become a proper adult woman, so I've started cooking, and I'm also studying fashion. With the awareness of being an adult comes a fair amount of pressure [laughs].

How's your cooking skill now?
It's embarrassing to say myself, but I'm quite good at it. The other day, I made Oyakodon for the first time, but it was really delicious, and it also got a glowing evaluation from my family. I wonder why when I do it it goes so well [laughs].

Lastly, please tell us your ambitions for this year.
It's true that AKB48 is now a household name, but the number of people who know me as an individual still aren't that many, so I want to try my best at individual work such as singing and drama, and let all sorts of people know about me.

Still, in your situation as a major member of AKB48 you've got lots of work, so isn't it difficult to balance that with solo work?
That's true. I want to try doing dramas, but if you include rehearsals, it really takes up a long stretch of time. But I'm really serious about wanting to do a musical. The performance and expression looks like so much fun, and I really want to increase my experience of performing on that kind of stage.

How about for AKB48?
Rather than a boom, I want us to become the standard. For that to happen, there are all sorts of things I have to communicate to my juniors. If pushed, I'd have to say that that sort of thing isn't my speciality, but it's something that I have to do so… I'll try my best. [laughs].
