^^ This one i've been waiting for  :twothumbs :twothumbs. Finally Idoling!!! will released their new single (double A-single). I wonder what kind of song are One Up!!! and 苺牛乳 :D :D

none of the summer singles have disappoint me so far (Mujouken / Poolside) so I have pretty high hopes for this one too. Its good to hear next singles' release after all the wait.

Kiss good bye to Oricon weekly #1, NMB48 is going to release new single on the same day.
Actually #2 might be better that #1. The song title is "One Up!!!" and their rival is 48 group.

Since it is a double A-side, Kadosawa said that they're going to make two PVs. I hope it's a different themed song so that we get to see some variety.

Sadly I can't see this single selling more than MAMORE!!!. There's nothing to boost sale like the 5th gen voting this time. Plus there's only three version of the single and two version of toreka.

I guess another swimsuit theme is expected, and I don't mind it but for Idoling I always expect a little more or should I say something a little unorthodox so to speak because of their unique style as a group, but that's probably not how I should see things as Idoling is more or less very traditional when it comes to the music department. It's actually the Hello Project groups that do more funny/interesting style of songs but sometimes I just feel like Idoling should do that as well more, because they are the best in the variety department. One of the possible reasons why Idoling doesn't stand out as much may be due to their somewhat ordinary music style that doesn't really stand out as much.

Since Idoling releases an album for every generation, I now understand why there hasn't been an album release this year yet because no new generation was added last year so this spring is a skipped, but I would not count out there being an album later this year in the winter season but I don't know if that's something the management would do, I assume releasing of an album is better in spring than winter.

I'm glad that the cheer song from the CM is not the single song, I was getting a bit tiresome of the whole cheer theme. But then again the new single could be that type of song so who knows. But I'm very excited about listening to the new songs. Having 2 PVs is also great, I wouldn't mind every Idoling song having it's own PV, hellz yeah.

Since Kadosawa said there are going to be PVs for each song, perhaps One Up is the cool song and Ichigo Gyuunyuu is going to be the cute song with a summer theme PV. Judging from the lyrics the song has nothing to do with summer and bikini, it has a deeper meaning more like Idoling!!! recent single. I'm hoping the other song to be a fun upbeat song.

Some Morning Musume fan actually came to me and was like "you know why idoling is so underrated outside of Japan? Because their music is so dull, uninteresting, too girly and naive". That was before "Don't Think, Feel" and "Mamore" singles. Though I think that he is still not too impressed about their music.

I must say that I agree with him up to a point. Their music has to evolve and become more mature sounding, before it gets any wider recognition.

I must agree withe the others in the sentiment that One Up!!! while is not a bad song, simply does not have a strong impact, is that like a jazz type of instrumental? It's a bit too un-pop-ish if you know what I mean, that it feels a little out of place, it's almost like watching a musical instead of an idol live.

Ichigo-Gyunyu from what I heard members talking is a girly, naive song, which is not exactly my type of song, Haru Iro No Sora, comes to mind, so I guess I should hope that the other coupling song is good, but the title suggest that it's a ballad...

Eww let's not use AKB48 as a comparison, I mean it's just too convenient to justify their music solely on popularity and whatnot. Besides, one criticism about Mamore!!! was that it sounded like an SKE song. I agree though that the lack of the cute factor in the recent single songs is somewhat a head-scratching trend, they might have taken into account that the members are getting up there in age, but with 5th gen. members joining I think they should be able to execute any type of song, however I guess 5th gen. is not ready to take the center stage yet so maybe they'll do a cutesy single for the next single with 5th gen/younger members taking the center role, although I don't see it happening since the staff is totally in love with Maipuru and Umeko.

Although it's probably never going to happen, I think what needs to be changed is getting a new song writer. While I don't really have anything against the ones who have written songs for Idoling so far, I think their best work has already been provided, and one can only write a great song so many times, it may be a risky but one thing is for sure, and that is that it'll be a very new style of song.

They are cute no matter what, so they don't need cutesy song to be cute. There are too many cutesy songs in idol world, so they need to be different anyway. I think cutesy song doesn't match Idoling!!! image.
I'm glad avex management creator division has become Kadosawa's favorite songs creator.

Rurika already said that Ichigo Gyuunyuu is a cute song on a radio show this week. I think they already shot the PV for it. Today's shooting looked like the PV for One Up!!!

I get to hear some part of Ichigo Gyuunyuu in the background during yesterday's recording. It certainly sounds cute but it's a bit different than other energetic summer released singles like Mujouken Koufuku or Poolside Daisakusen.
Ichigo Gyuunyuu slow tempo reminded me of Haruiro no Sora. Need to hear the full song to make better judgement though.

I have mixed feelings about this. It looks really hot but if the whole PV is like this, it could end up looking desperate. Also, what about the other girls. For some reason, I cannot imagine Reia doing what Erica is doing in that shot.

Let's wait and see how the rest of the PV is like.

I don't like this song.

PV is not  bad, but I don't think this is a good song.

I always hear every one sing the song together, no impact.

Maybe I still stay in 1st and 3rd Gen Idoling!!!.

After 目には青葉 山ホトトギス 初恋,I only remember EVE. I mean main song of the single.

Just my opinion.

Looks like the competition is raising their game, Morming Musume is on a promotional blitzkrieg along with almost 100k in weekly CD sales, Super Girls is right behind in a very strong showing. How the hell could Idoling even match those sale figures? Without any extra promotion there's no way this single would even outsell Mamore!!!, a sexy PV alone simply won't cut it. Add to that NMB is the competition for the release date.

But then again, I don't mind if this single doesn't do so well, otherwise they'll keep doing the sexy theme which doesn't fit Idoling.

that is true indeed, promotional team is taking things for granted a bit too much. Getting #1 in oricon just because of the 5th gens really means nothing and looking by the way the team is looking at this, they are definitely taking the previous sales for granted.

I'm wondering just how much influence does Kado-P has in this new singles, or is this more towards Pony Canyon's decision? Does anyone have any idea how this kind of decision is made.

At the very best, this could reflect the real number of actual sales without the influence of voting gimmick, at its worse, this can be the best wake up call that things are not going on the right direction.

Agree. HEY!x3 is *the* marquee music variety show in Japan. I don't remember the last time Idoling!!! performed on this show alongside mainstream artistes like SNSD and the 48-groups outside of the quarterly Idol specials (where they invite almost all of the idol groups anyway). It's already considered a win.

You never see a comedian even admit to being an Idoling fan, now they are coming out one by one.

Just watched the PV for the first time. It's done a lot more tastefully than I feared. I was dreading it going the Heavy Rotation route so much! The way I see it, it's no different than any other swimsuit singles such as Mujouken Koufuku or Poolside Daisakusen. Heard the song fully for the first time also and I am liking it so far:)

The PV's not bad, it's just that i think the concept is not suitable for the song. I mean it's a summery song, and the water splashing is obviously not enough to describe it  :nervous
I see another pro/con for Kikuchi here  :roll: she's getting pushed to the front-ish position, and not surprisingly she's bringing the overall quality down  :roll:
They can definitely bring her for center position in MCs, but for stage performance?? keep her as far back as possible please!  XD   Seriously, even a 5th grader elementary schoolers can do a better expressions than her :nervous

I'm not quite sure what I thinkof the PV yet. I'm some ways I don't like it. With there being so many members it seemed to me that at times they were changing camera angles much too quickly in order that everyone could be seen. Because of this I wasn't able to follow it easily.
Another think I wanted to happen was for another member to get to do the solo. I know Maipuru is a great singer (in my opinion) but she always seems to get to do the solo parts in most of the songs. For once I'd like another member to get the chance to do it. It's got me wondering what is going to happen when she does finally graduate, how are they going to choose who takes over singing the solo parts.

One Up!!! PV review - I find the concept a bit conflicting, it just doesn't seem like the dark theme goes together with the uptempo & cheerful beat of the song. I don't think the theme is very detailed, I don't know what I'm suppose to imagine with the outfit, is it about punk rock? exotic dancing? wrestling? Whatever it is, the imagery is too vague. The over-usage of effects bother me as well, the sparkles especially are too bright at times that I had to squint my eyes while watching. Camera cuts are too fast at times that I couldn't even tell who I was watching. As a whole the PV just felt very fragmented and hectic, I couldn't remember any specific moments that stood out from a couple of viewings alone. Having said that, the PV does have more visual impact than the previous PVs I could recall in recent times, it may have a better chance of stopping the people walking on the street if shown on big screen in Shibuya. It's better than Mamore!!! PV, but not by much.

As for member placements, I didn't like how 5th gen. members are so under-utilized, because Kurumi and Karen are visually impeccable ones out of the group and they were hardly shown in the PV. As much as I like Asahi, she's featured way too much in this type of theme, she's not the sexy type, she's totally mis-used in the PV in that she's over-exposed, her position would've been better suited with someone like Tonchan or Miyake. I didn't have a problem with the amount of camera time Kikuchi got as she is one of the sexy types which fits with the theme of the PV.

As for the coupling songs, I would say they are the weakest efforts by far, very generic and not memorable, mostly for the fact that the music style just seems off. I can understand that they would use the coupling songs as a testing ground by letting the less vocally gifted members to participate with more lines, but it sure doesn't hurt to have Maipuru, Tonchan, Ruri trio in a beastly god-like ballad once in a while as well. Idoling coupling songs historically were on par with single songs if not better, but I can't say the same this time around, the coupling songs are quite under-whelming. It bothers me a little more in that they sound like typical AKB songs where vocal ability is not utilized at all, and going with a casual style vocal that makes the song even more generic and dull. As a whole I don't understand the musical style of this single, it just doesn't sound like the kind that Idoling would be a part of. I seriously think the current music composition staff's well is dried up, and it's time to get a fresh blood of talent in there.

Why a surprise if the coupling songs are kind of different, it's always like that.
Sayonara Junjou has a style that Idoling!!! hasn't done yet, and Idoling!!! is quite known to try out any genre.
And I like the latin style of this song :)
After listening to Megami no Pulse a few times, even though it sounds a little generic, I like it :) (And it sounds like mixes can fit in :))

Still think One Up!!! is the best song, I'm glad this is the main A track,
and Ichigo Gyuunyuu the weakest song (although it's starting to grow on me).

Can't wait for a full CD rip (or my own copy, whichever is first :P)

Henceforth, any mention of "Idoling", "them", "they" or "their" in this post refers to the Producer(s).

I'm not sure this collection of songs (singles + b-sides) is going to help Idoling, on the contrary, I feel like it might hurt them. Their exposure has been increasing since Don't Think. Feel!, and it's going to be necessary for them to constantly out-do their previous work to maintain and increase buzz. That's being said, I'm not sure if either A-side could deliver: they're both far more mild than Mamore!.

I'm trying to think of Idoling from an objective, non-fan's POV. If I had to sum up why I wouldn't be interested: 1) uninspired songs 2) weak production 3) unpolished singing. This release seems like a mix of 1) and 2). 3) seems to be taken care of recently because (I might be wrong) the girls are singing over their studio vocals during TV appearances. These songs have weak instrumentation, weak mixing, and all-too-familiar, almost cliché melodies and progressions. I think they even re-used the Pre-Chorus from the recent PuyoPuyo song in Ichigo Gyuunyuu. It's almost as if they're trying to write something they think as many people as possible would be able to stomach.

As far as mixing goes, the drums sound like they've been mixed so aggressively that they're now sitting between good synth / bad acoustic, and the overall mixes lack punch. Yes, I'm aware of the "Loudness War", but I feel like the guys in the studio didn't even attempt to thicken up these mixes. Fans wouldn't care about the mixes so much, but if you want to catch people's attention, you gotta jam the songs into their ears, make them really HEAR every second.

I don't harbour any desire to see Idoling explode like AKB. Frankly, I wouldn't give a rat's fanny if they existed solely for us on the forum, but financially that's impossible. I just want them to be successful enough to keep going for several more years, but I feel like they need to step up their game.

Idoling has been the underdog since their debut; everyone knows that, they themselves even joke about it. I feel like this gives them a Free-Pass just go all-out and experiment with whatever genres and compositions they want. Right now, I feel like they're just trying to keep their head above the red by releasing overly "safe" singles that JUST meet the industry standard.

Ichigo Gyuunyuu PV review - The image video style is very appealing and it's nice to see that the outdoors was used to give it a more natural feel that matches with the style of the song. I don't necessarily have a problem with the members that were in school uniform, but considering that there are plenty of real-time students in Idoling to utilize, I can't help but scratch my head in the choices a bit as Aichan and Yurippe are no longer in school. Having the rest of the members in a snap-shot cut scenes in brief segments just looks unbalanced. It might have looked more coordinated if the real-time student members are utilized just for school uniform scenes as visuals and have the singing members be shown in the rest instead. Considering that this is an A-side song, I'm not thrilled with a very small showing of some members such as Kaepyon and 5th gen. memebers, It's only fitting that they would be the prime candidates to be showcased in a song like this where youthfulness is essential, instead the youngest members are completely neglected, I mean what are they thinking? Wouldn't it be better to have 2 A-side PVs showcase different members instead of the same? I'm perfectly fine with how Asahi was showcased in this PV, but she is totally not the right fit in One Up!!! PV. I also would be fine without the shots of Maipuru in this PV even if she's the main vocal, she just doesn't go with a youthful song and this PV. As for the song itself, I don't hate it but I can't stand the casual singing style that just kills the potential of such a ballad song where emotional element is simply not there to a listener.

As a separate commentary, I like to mention that I'm alarmed at just how little 5th gen. is utilized in the PVs since they have joined. It's like they are not even there in the 2 PVs so far. Why are they being so under-utilized when 3rd and 4th gen were practically given their own single PV when first joined in "baby blue" and "Meniwa Aoba..." to feature the new faces??? I'm not saying they should put 5th gen. members in the center position, I'd just like to see a little more balance and at the least show them enough in PVs that they do exist. I understand that they would like to push members like Asahi, Aichan, Maipuru, and Yuna, but if only 4 of them are exclusively shown in PVs, the appeal factor would only become narrower to the audience as opposed to showing all members equally so that Idoling would attract more fans with 21 instead of 4 faces.

Now that's my kind of PV. I'm not really into PVs with just dance and a few close-ups. I might as well just watch a live performance. This, however, is much better. It has outdoor parts (that's almost always good) and natural, non-dance close-ups with interesting clothes and backgrounds.

I've always found their mixes to be a lot "smaller" sounding than other modern pop idol groups, I'm listening to a few now to compare. Oddly enough I'm comparing Idoling 320kbps to Youtube (other groups) and they still sound smaller. They use real instruments, but most of the times I feel like the instruments are an afterthought. It sort of leaves this greyish colour over the whole song. My concern is mostly with Ichigo Gyuunyuu, I sense that it'll end up having as much punch as Bokura no Niwa.

I honestly don't see the connection here, other than they resolve to a root of a major scale, but that could be said for 99% of idol music to begin with.  Here's a pretty funny comparison though, and this is really (probably) just a fluke happening.  AKB48's chorus to song 109 sounds a lot like Sonic 1's Marble stage theme.

Oddly enough I'm comparing Idoling 320kbps to Youtube (other groups) and they still sound smaller. They use real instruments, but most of the times I feel like the instruments are an afterthought. It sort of leaves this greyish colour over the whole song. My concern is mostly with Ichigo Gyuunyuu, I sense that it'll end up having as much punch as Bokura no Niwa.

Those "real" instruments that you hear result in a different sounding mix than a lot of other modern pop music out there.  Mixing real instruments that have been miked in the studio is a lot different than mixing MIDI mapped samples.  I can throw Ozone on some sample loops set to a default preset, and it'll sound huge.  I can throw that same thing on a mix recorded with real instruments, and it'll sound anemic in comparison.  When you combine both samples and real instruments in a mix, you have one hell of a time trying to fit everything in properly.  The frequencies start competing with each other, compression levels are totally different and it's just a huge pain.

Idoling!!!'s audio engineers follow a more conservative approach when it comes to mastering.  Their mixes rarely clip, and they like to leave some headroom in them.  You can compare the average RMS between their songs vs others, and you'll notice theirs is lower.  I will say one thing - AKB has tons of artists out there competing against each other to record their next greatest hit.  They also have access to some of the top recording engineers in the J-Pop industry.  It's hard to compete with that when you're not quite as well known.  Marty Friedman actually did a nice piece explaining how all of this works in his Workshop at MIDEM article.

But I digress.  If someone doesn't like the song, that's fine.  I have no issues with that.  I actually don't really care for any of the songs on this single, but that's my own personal feeling.  They're alright, but I won't be adding them to my Idoling!!! favorites playlist anytime soon.  My main thing was to help try to explain what was going on in the main audio engineer's head.  That, and I personally don't think the pre-choruses of Puyo and Ichigo are that copies of each other.

Sorry, should have clarified, I wasn't referring to the roots, it's the vocal melody at the beginning of each phrase.

When I listen to SISTERS, 4U and Ichikoi are the two that leap out at me most due to their nice, thick mixes. They sound the most polished; the most "complete" if you will, as if the writers just jam-packed as much as they possibly could have into each song. That might not be Idoling's signature style (which is varied, 3 Dome to Bakkyun  :shocked), but it'd be nice to hear them release something huge and full once in a while to remind the public that they have balls and that they can roll with the best of them.

Maybe the public is reacting? I just looked at the sales figures of MM's recent singles (not really a fan) and sifted through the sales figures you guys put up on the forum. With the exception of the latest, it looks like Idoling's giving MM a run for their money. I wasn't comparing or counting AKB, they've reached this plinth of absolute saturation and sales ridiculousness.

On a separate note, I've finally watched both PVs now that I don't have to worry about my Boss walking by and seeing me staring at a bunch of young girls in black bras. One Up's PV looks a lot more polished than I was expecting. Here's hoping the public eats it up.

One Up! PV is a radical change about the concept to Idoling!!!, but i like this change.

PD: damn i have a double work with these PVs.  :panic:. , karaoke versions will be release soon (next week maybe). i am having final exams this week and im very busy.  :angry:

Even if they would release something "full" and "complete", they still wouldn't suddenly sell 1 million copies.
Let's say, if A*B had never released Heavy Rotation (or any one of the other million sellers), but Idoling!!! released that song right now, no way it would sell that same amount of copies. I've noticed that idol groups always grow over time and never have a sudden hit that 10-folds their previous single. It's just that Idoling!!! seems to grow really slow...

But I don't mind that, I like Idoling!!! for what they are right now (and have always been), and I cheer on every bit more success they can achieve each time!  :thumbup :twothumbs

100% agree!!! Some people might like idol group because they popular, cute/kawaii, funny. It's ok, but for me Idoling!!! can represent an unique & ideal Idol for me  :twothumbs :twothumbs Although they're not the cutest, most popular, funniest, etc. I  :heart: Idoling!!!

It's not just music that determines the fate of an idol group, to be honest I don't think music itself matters that much, maybe 10% of all the factors. It's just that Idoling used to have very good music for an idol group aided by the fact that they actually have very good vocals and unique songs that also used to utilize the vocal abilities.

The biggest problem I see in Idoling from becoming a hit is really marketing strategy or lack thereof, and incredibly bad timing. In my mind Maipuru should've been given at least three solo or duet songs in the album CDs by now, and should've had a solo concert 2 years ago, the staff has totally missed the opportunity to fully take advantage of Maipuru's talents while she was still young. The same could be said of Rurika more or less. The lack of promotion and development of the individual member in the right time just never seems to materialize until it's kind of a bit late and have the fans wondering why the staff isn't being proactive enough.

They are making the same slow reaction with Asahi more or less as well, Asahi was much cuter when she first joined Idoling, she should've been pushed 2 years ago instead of now where she's not that cute any more and no longer a magazine model, a little too late.

I'm not advocating that youth is superior, it's just that the peak period for an idol tends to be when they are younger rather than older. It's much easier to get attention with just looks at a younger age, when an idol goes over 20 years old looks alone simply won't be as effective. What the staff really needs to do is specialize the roles for the members that tailor to their strength AT THEIR PEAK PERIOD. Instead of simply putting Asahi, Maipuru, Yuna, and Aichan in every PV scene possible and having the subpar vocal members singing the coupling songs which yield unimpressive and less than ideal quality in the outcome, have the younger members with looks to represent the youthful PV with Kaepyon, Karen, Ruka, Yuna, Kurumi, then have the vocalist members belt the lines for the main vocals and that formula would produce a much more visually sensible PV and a spectacular sounding song.

The fact that Morning Musume managed to double the single sales from last time isn't because of the song itself, but because of the super-extra promotional efforts, and it seems like they have jumped on the hand-shake event tactics as well. Tsunku is very good at promoting the younger members at the right moments, although I feel that sometimes they are being pushed way over the top, but at least the younger members get their share of the spotlight instead of being shoved into the background for 2 years or so like Idoling does. When I looked at the comments on YouTube, Morning Musume is getting new fans by watching the younger members, not Michishige.

While there are many faults to be found in Idoling's system, what I find very worthy about them is that their chemistry with each other is one of a kind, there's a genuine quality to it that simply can't be found in other groups. And there's no question in my mind that Idoling is the funniest idol group of all, it's a shame that the Japanese public and the idol culture simply don't hold humor and comedy very highly in the idol industry.

This is a good point. When I was in Japan I went to all the usual CD Shops and idol goods shops, but there was a distinct lack of Idoling. Trio in Akihabara has an Idoling goods section and you could find Idoling CDs are the various shops, but you had to put in the effort to find them.

It felt like a lot of the other groups are promoted more actively. Super Girls had trucks running around, YGA and tons of other lesser known groups had events at Softmap, Morning Musume had various release events, AKB48 has CMs and massive posters up everywhere and even groups like Afilia Saga East have signed poster and stuff up at various stores. Momoiro Clover Z are the kings of promotion, they are everywhere. I didn't see anything like this for Idoling, nothing at all. Granted, part of this may be caused by that the single doesn't release until three weeks, so maybe it's just getting started.

On the other hand, I also visited the FujiTV Headquarters in Odaiba (and the Tokyo Tower Studio), but even there I was amazed by the lack of Idoling. I went to two shops, which didn't have any Idoling goods. I took the tour through the building and only spotted two small framed collages:

Yes, the complete lack of Idoling!!! promotion even in their own hq is amazing. The variety shop downstairs should have the latest toreka set next to the cash register, but maybe that has already changed since 2 months ago. I've visited that shop every time since january 2009, and there used to be more in that shop. In 2009 they actually had an Idoling!!! section with t-shirts, mufflers, uchiwa & some photos. I've visited the shop every time, but it got smaller and smaller. In January this year, there were just leftovers from long graduated members (like Eto & Michelle), but 2 months ago everything was gone. Except for the toreka set near the cash register.

High profile promotion like big posters & trucks cost a lot of money (I guess), which seems to have always been a problem: budget. Is it because most of the budget goes to the TV show? I'm not sure about that because the show is on Fuji TV, and the music is under Pony Canyon, then I guess most of the budget for singles & albums comes from Pony Canyon? Same goes for PVs, they are always late to put up the PV on the music channels...

Pony Canyon may not have been such a good choice as a music labal for Idoling!!!... I wonder what would've happened if they were under Avex...

You could say Idoling wouldn't last this long in the first place if it wasn't for the security blanket of FujiTV, but I must say what good does that do when Idoling also is not the first priority of FujiTV as well.

FujiTV is only interested in selling a proven product that is already popular, because that's how they get to attract the advertising revenue. FujiTV sees Idoling as a very limited potential in terms of generating profit from selling ads.

FujiTV once tried to sell Idoling simply with their company name and hype in the beginning, which totally didn't work, so now they don't even want to bother with Idoling, but that's not Idoling's fault. FujiTV should've let Idoling develop as a group for a couple of years before hyping them up as a product.

Now that Idoling has matured into a very worthy product, FujiTV is now being ignorant and totally under-selling Idoling, probably not even realizing the true value of the group right now.

It's highly unlikely, almost impossible that Idoling would be able to become an independent group under the current situation.

The biggest obstacle is that the members are under different talent agencies. The new independent group has to buy out the members' current contracts in order to be truly regarded as an independent entity, otherwise it would be just a change of the main representative from FujiTV to company x.

If once in a million chance that Idoling manages to become an independent group, they'll be under a new group name as FujiTV owns the rights to the Idoling brand and they'll more than likely would not allow any other company to use it, and even if they do allow it, they'll ask for a lot of money.

If those two things are settled away, Idoling as an independent group would get a highly customized promotional marketing and CD sales would double immediately.

And every TV station (except for FujiTV) in Japan would fight over each other to feature the group in their prime time TV show.

Yeah, in comparison:

First day sales - First week sales
DTF: 20,233 - 38,999
Mamore: 41,815 - 56,232

So I reckon the estimated weekly sales for One Up will be around 45K.


If I'm honest I'm not really feeling this single. It's like "they" studied which elements lead to good sales: bikini covers, sexy PV, decent promotion, etc. and they put it all in this single. However, I feel none of it really matches. It doesn't feel like one well though-out concept. The song is pretty weak and it doesn't really go with the PV. I really want them to do well, but I feel this has been a big missed opportunity. If you're gonna go all out, make sure they get an epic song as well.

Assuming that Idoling!!! gets an Oricon #3 ranking for this single, I was curious how they compared to other popular idol groups whose names do not end with '48':

Over the past three singles, no group has performed better than Idoling!!!, and if you count all singles over the past two years, only S☆G is slightly better (perhaps because sample size is smaller since they are a newer group). Neither Berryz nor MCZ has gotten #2 before, and Passpo☆ really fell off a cliff after getting a (dubious?) #1 ranking for their first single (their last three singles - #3, #17, #11). And we are not even considering other groups like 9nine and Tokyo Joshiryu who are supposed to be popular in their own right, but yet struggle to crack the top 10 rankings.

In other words, one can make a pretty good case that Idoling!!! is already the de facto top idol group outside of the '48' groups, strictly based on Oricon sales rankings. What really alludes them is a #1 Oricon ranking, which is incredibly difficult to come by for an idol group nowadays unless you are being produced by Aki-P.

Can I just point out one thing which I feel is relevant. The rank of a single is completely irrelevant, in the sense that it doesn't say anything about actual sales or popularity. You can get a #1 by selling 27K copies (WH - Akkanbe Bashi) if there are no other popular artists releasing anything in that week, but you can also get a weekly #3 while selling 100K copies (MM - One Two Three) if the competition is tough during that week.

For example, Momoiro Clover Z may have a lower average rank but their last three singles sold 40K, 40K and 67K which is pretty good.

But yeah, I get your point. Compared to the other idol groups you mentioned they're doing quite well. Idoling was even outselling Morning Musume, but they seemed to have bounced back with their latest single. In the tier below the groups you mentioned there are units like Afilia Saga East who are happy to break 5~10K, so yeah, not bad at all. However, saying they are 'the best of the rest' based on rankings isn't the whole story.

Realistically speaking it's probably safe to say that both Momoclo and Super Girls have surpassed Idoling though, (as well as Morning Musume which oddly isn't in the comparison chart above.) and that's obviously not good. One thing though about Idoling is that they are a very steady group, while the other groups are quite volatile.

The blitzkrieg marketing seemed to have not worked based on 1st day sales figure, this just might be the very first tangible sign that Idoling is facing a real dilemma and the management has to look in the mirror and confront it. I honestly thought the fancy marketing might compensate for the extra sales they made from the voting last time, but it may be difficult to even match Mamore!!! at current pace.

I think it's a waste of an effort to even try to go up against 48 groups right now because for one they don't compete in a fair way to begin with and they have all the ammo/firepower on their side, so hopefully the staff and the management would pick themselves up and concentrate more on making the product itself better instead of focusing on getting the top prize all the time.

I think Idoling!!! should indeed be lucky to keep getting top 3.
By ranking alone, Idoling!!! has always been in top 10, except for the first single which was at #13. (not counting the FuriFuri/BanBan/.. singles)
By sales, they have always had at least 10k, Meniwa Aoba was above 20k, and after that all singles were above 30k consistenly.
From what I read in the previous posts, other non-48/non-MM idol groups seem to either hardly get to 10,20,30k sales, have difficulty reaching top 10, or are very inconsistent with big differences in sales and rankings between singles (although I would like to see numbers for all of that), Idoling!!! should indeed be lucky to be so consistent.

Just by first day sales, they're already at 29k, that's bound to pass the 30k mark tomorrow, so we may still reach the 40k mark by the end of the oricon week.
The big marketing may still have some after-effects on the 2nd or 3rd day, we'll see how big the drop is tomorrow...

(side note: seems like oricon has recently changed something on the single rankings, no sales data is shown any more for the top 10 older than 1 week. This must be a recent change from the last 2-3 weeks.)

I think One Up!!! is actually a good song, not the best Idoling!!! song ever but still a very good one, way better than what NMB48 ever released. Even Ichigo Gyuunyuu and the two c/w are pretty enjoyable.

Idoling!!! obviously has the potential to reach 70 000+ sales just like SUPER GiRLS with their latest single, but maybe for that they need more events.

Well then i have to say congratolations for Idoling!!! and their management for alll their hard work so far. For me OU/IG was a fair song (although not the best), with good package (cover photo, PV). At some point i see that MAMORE!!! was a better song than this, its sales proved it all. Maybe their management have to "speed-up" promotion to make it better, this is just first day, still days more.

About Idol world competition nowadays, i have to say there are a lot of surprises this year. 48-groups are no surprises, because they are already enjoy its "golden-era", maybe up to 5-years from now on. They are national idols, japan representation in terms of idols. No doubt about it. What surprise me is the rising of Momoclo & Super Girls, and comeback of Momusu. In my Perspective, Idoling!!! also rise up this year with MAMORE!!!, but compare to them (momoclo, SG, Momusu) I think they still lack of popularity.

I saw that Momoclo, SG & Momusu often shown in TV or variety, guest on popular tv-show, etc. Maybe this is crucial factor to become popular, personally and also their group. IMO Idoling just have Amimi who often seen in TV. Beside that Idoling seemed to be a "exclusive" fuji-TV group. I knew that their policy which make it hard for them to explore more. I glad that their 12th live will be stage on NHK hall. Also i glad that many of their member often show in TV/programs (Maipuru for example)

In the end, for us Idolinger!!! no other words that we have to keep support them.

You're supposed to pay/get a license from Oricon to use their data or to get it in a easy format (like excel), blabla...
But I had actually started a "little" project some months ago to get all oricon data off of their site, and I have a few years of data (only singles weekly though, until january 2007, I hadn't gone further yet), but I don't update it regularly which is why I now have a gap in july for top 10 because of their latest change with the top 10 sales. I can already generate a graph, but I need to do some updates for all the other idol groups.
So you want just the total sales of each single, not weekly sales?

Some interesting trivia I see on my graph, Mujouken☆Koufuku is the only single to chart for 4 weeks (#5, #42, #48, #34), all other singles only chart for 1-2 weeks.

We can't compare this single to MAMORE!!! because of the voting ticket, plus this time they do less 個別握手会 compared to previous singles.
But yeah, looking at the publicity this time, it is pretty disappointing result.

There are many fans outside of Tokyo having difficulty to find any CDs at their local stores, even as big as Tsutaya.
I really wish they change to Avex for better marketing.

AKB48 Matsui Sakiko had to go twice to CD store because of A and B type were sold out first day. Pretty good sales for 1600/2000 yen price tag single.

After a long review in OU/IG singles, i found something interesting from my point of view :

1. One Up!!! is definitely a catchy song, but somehow i feel that it resembles some of Idoling!!! typical song (even i confused which one)
2. Ichigo Gyuunyuu is a great "idol-type" song (PV prove it all), a sweet girl song, i think it will match for Teen-Dorama Movie theme.
3. Megami no Pulse in my opinion should be main singles, not coupling. This is what Idoling!!! should expose to fans, upbeat song, very Idoling!!!-sound, and also very Idol-typical songs. People (in general term) should be friendly with this kind of song, even me (just 2-3 times)
4. Sayonara Junjou is another great song, combine with some western-sound ambience, i feel that this song should be promote more. Its unique sound reminds me of SUNRISE-package albums (i think is the best Idoling Albums so far).

If i was Kado-P, then the singles will be double-A Megami no Pulse & Sayonara Junjou with One Up!!! as a coupling track, Ichigo Gyuunyuu maybe i'll put in a dorama-based song  :D :D :D btw i was just kidding  :D :D

I think that this single-package was a great work & masterpiece, with a lot potential inside it, behind "bikini" cover-shot & sexy PV.

Now that I think about it, why didn't they make a PV with the bikinis they're wearing on the covers... they're brilliant.
Granted the outfit doesn't really fit One Up!!!, hence the black outfit. But then again, the black outfit isn't really fit for a cover. So it's a bit of a mix-up between covers vs PVs...
So people who don't know Idoling!!! buy this single by seeing the cover and the advertising, will nowhere find those outfits on the DVD/Bluray... They didn't even include the making of the cover shoot on it.

I've been working on my oricon data a bit more, sorted out some idol groups, filled in the gaps from the last 2 months, and this is the result so far: Group Rankings (http://www.j-enta.com/en/group_rankings.php)

So far, I've made 2 lists:
- all idol groups and most of their singles (since around 2007) with highest chart position and total sales (not 1st week sales).
- all idol groups sorted by their highest selling single, and their highest ranking (each with their respective song that got them that position, because it can be different from the highest selling one. Also it is the first single to reach that chart position)

I plan to make another list which shows weekly sales for each single. I've also got a graph in mind to compare chart position & sales from all idol groups together (need to test it out to see if it's actually readable ;p).

I have noticed so far, that if one leaves out S☆G and momokuro's last single (which got 80k+ each), Idoling!!! tops every other idol group that is not 48 or HelloProject related.
If I've forgot any idol groups interesting for comparison, feel free to let me know, then I will add them.
Also, when oricon releases this week's sales tomorrow, I will update it.

I can't believe French Kiss outsold Perfume. That's just crazy, even though I'ma FK fanboy, haha.

Excluding solo releases and one shot units, there is one regular active AKB48 related unit you left out: DiVa (http://www.generasia.com/wiki/DiVA). They may be relevant because their sales are in the 55K~70K area.

I've added first week sales as an extra column.
I've also made a third list at the bottom which is the best selling single sorted by first week sales.
And updated with today's weekly sales.

So One Up!!! is actually Idoling!!!'s second best single in terms of first week sales, surpassing DTF by 105 copies. So that's actually not bad :thumbup (they're consistent as always :P)

Hmm, the reason for Yarakai heart total sales to be lower is because I've only scraped the weekly sales. So if they fall out of the chart, I don't have data on that.
But there seems to be something strange about the monthly sales... (just what time period does oricon use for monthly sales?)
Yarakai heart:
1st week: 42691 (3/14)
2nd week: 2691 (3/21)
not charted 3/28 & 4/4 (this is 3/22-3/28 due to oricon's strange date system...)
weekly that totals 45382, that leaves 2397 for the rest of the month.
However those singles ranked in 50th position have 982 (3/28) and 1063 (4/4), which is only 2045 (it would be less for YH).
So if oricon's monthly ranking are on the actual 1st till last day of the month, that leaves (3/29-31) with at least 352 for YH.
Anyway, the totals on my page are from the weekly charted sales, so sales outside of the top 50 are not counted... I can try to put some manual corrections into my db to account for these differences.
Data outside of top 50 is very hard to find, and what I did find were just excerpts (like only 48-groups for example)...

My only suggestion is to compare only via the first week sales figures and sales ranking only, since it's a better apples-to-apples comparison. There is no time bias, and I noticed that some of your sales data doesn't go beyond the first week (i.e. the total sales and first week sales are the same).

Also, would love to see the average sales figures of all the "idol" singles released every month to see if there is any pattern between certain months having better sales in general than other months.

Well, the reason why first week and total sales are sometimes the same is because this is all based on the weekly top 50 sales. If they drop out of the top 50 in the second week, I don't have data. :sweatdrop: It's based on the data that oricon posts publicly. If you can find data on top 100/200 somewhere, that would be great.

I've updated the page (http://www.j-enta.com/en/group_rankings.php) a bit again: I've switched the first week and total sales columns, now first week chart position and sales are next to each other which is easier to read/compare.

amazon never gives you any freebie at all, like never. So go for alternatives like CD Japan/HMV if you want any extra freebies. The only good thing about amazon.jp to me is the unbelievably fast shipping.

CD Japan is very fast for me as well (if you're using fedex). They sent it on Monday, and I received it on Wednesday. Sadly no extras either...

I've had 1 or 2 posters from CD Japan, I got one with the yarakai heart single. Maybe eve as well, but I'm not sure...

I agree, Amazon is fast in an insane way. It takes 3 days from Japan to Argentina (bear in mind that flights usually go Japan-USA-South America). CDJapan uses EMS shipping and that takes 1 week or even more to reach here, but 1 or more days are spent in Customs.

About freebies, I heard that people got copies from CDJapan without extras, so HMV must be the only option.
