Title: [CHI] John Woo
Post by: daigong on March 09, 2009, 03:59:46 AM
John Woo aka Ng Yu-Sum 吳宇森

My favorite Chinese director of ALL TiME!! His movies are influential, not just action shoot-em ups - they are tales of brotherhood and redemption. Known for his collabos with Chow Yun-fat, Tony Leung Chiu-Wai, and Jean-Claude Van Damme - check out RED CLIFF!!

John Woo's Hard Boiled Getting a Big Screen Sequel

We haven't seen much from Hong Kong director John Woo since he directed Paycheck in 2003, and that's because he's been developing his two-part epic Red Cliff in China for the last few years. However, hidden in a THR article (via SlashFilm) was a tidbit about Woo's Lion Rock Entertainment
developing a sequel to Hard Boiled and/or adaptation of the video game Stranglehold. The game was created as a continuation of Woo's original Hard Boiled, which hit theaters in 1992, so it's the same thing as a sequel. While Woo isn't directing, he has hired budding writers Jeremy Passmore and Andre Fabrizio to pen the adaptation.

Stranglehold is billed as "The Only Authentic John Woo Video Game Experience," although it wasn't as big of a hit as expected, with only a 77 rating on Metacritic. I haven't played the game, and sadly I haven't even seen Hard Boiled either, though I've now added it to my must watch list. Stranglehold sees Chow Yun-Fat reprise his signature role as Inspector Tequila, pitting gamers as a take-no-prisoners cop waging a personal war with Hong Kong crime lords. Tequila's loyalties to the force are tested when his ex-wife is kidnapped by the Russian mob in Chicago. We're not sure if that story will be translated to the big screen.

It's no secret that I really hate John Woo (read some of past articles on him), but I'm actually not opposed to this sequel. Why? First off, because Hard Boiled is one of the films that Woo made before he came to America and started churning out crap; and secondly, because Woo isn't directing this, which means another better director can come in an experiment with Woo-style action. That said, I'm kind of an outlier, considering I'm not a Woo fan, so I'll let those of you who are fans of Hard Boiled respond to this instead. Is a sequel to Hard Boiled / adaptation of Stranglehold really necessary?

That movie will most likely suck if Woo's not directing it

Hard Boiled Sequel Might Actually Be a Prequel After All?

A week ago we brought you the news that a sequel to Hard Boiled / adaptation of the video game Stranglehold was in development at John Woo's Lion Rock Entertainment. There weren't many details, but it was exciting news nonetheless. The guys at Twitch decided to dig up some more details and went to Woo's producing partner Terence Chang. He confirms that they are developing another Hard Boiled movie, but that "it is a total reinvention, with a much younger Tequila. In other words, it is not a sequel to Hard Boiled." So does that mean it might be a prequel? Chang didn't say, but it sounds like that's the case.

Chang starts off saying: "There was once a sequel to Hard Boiled, from an idea that I had. I developed it for Chow Yun-fat and had commissioned a pretty good script written by John Jarrell. The project is now inactive." So let's jump to today, where the Stranglehold video game, which is a sequel, has been out on shelves since late 2007. Chang continues: "We are now developing a movie of Stranglehold, and just signed the writers Jeremy Passmore and Andre Fabrizio. It will be a hardcore action film set in both Hong Kong and Chicago. We will keep some of the action set pieces of the game, but the story is different."

We're not exactly sure what this means and it looks like we'll have to wait to hear more or see how far into production it gets before we have more answers. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, it just means we won't get a direct sequel like originally reported. And I'm sure they won't cast either Chow Yun-Fat or Tony Leung again, which is a bit of a shame, but oh well. I'm cautiously optimistic about this being any good anyway.
http://www.firstshowing.net/2009/03/15/hard-boiled-sequel-might-actually-be-a-prequel-after-all/

WTF? I guess Chow Yun-Fat ain't gonna be in it after all. Shiiiiet, they shouldn't even call that movie Hard Boiled anymore

Just Heroes (1989)

IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094351/) | Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Just_Heroes)

Here's one of the most underrated John Woo classics! Just Heroes is virtually unknown despite the fact that it has all the classic John Woo elements: triads, brotherhood, amazing gunplay scenes and of course lots of malebonding. Starring Stephen Chow (in his most gangsta role ever), Danny Lee and the Shaw Brothers legends David Chiang, Ti Lung, Lo Lieh and Kuan Tai Chen. A must see for all John Woo fans!

Plot
(http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/4742/snapshot20090323231311.jpg)

Following the death of a triad leader, there is conflict within the Hong Kong organised crime syndicate as various possible leaders via for power. David Chiang attempts to bring the traiter in the midst of his own group to justice following a taped conversation of traitor admitting his crimes, but who cannot be found, while Danny Lee, the elected leader of the triad has his family attacked as he fights unknown enemies to bring the organisation back under control. Their actions are hindered by Chow Sing Chi who is attempting to built up anger between the two completing triad’s of Hong Kong. The film is brought to a classic John Woo heroic bloodshed conclusion as the traitor leader of the group storms the triad safe house in a desperate attempt to gain control over the group, but is met by heavy resistance.

Truly, one of the best directors EVER!  (or at least one of the best I'd ever seen, though apparently many agrees with me).

in this recent days, I watch several of his movies amazing ones, A better Tomorrow, A Better Tomorrow II, Hard Boiled, The Killer, Just Heroes, Face Off(USA).  And can't help but awe in his amazing directorial works. btw, Chow Yun Fat is one of my favorite actors, and him in John Woo films helped propelled him to stardom.

John Woo Directing a Romeo and Juliet War Epic Next?

Wait a minute, we haven't even see Red Cliff yet! Chinese director John Woo has left Hollywood and moved back to Beijing, but that isn't stopping him from making more big budget films. He finished his two part war epic Red Cliff, which hasn't even been seen in America yet, and is already talking about what's next. Woo spoke with Empire and revealed his early plans for another Chinese-language war epic that will actually be more of a romance. "It's like a Romeo and Juliet love story," Woo said, "a love story, but with war scenes." And as for his other project called 1949, "I had to pass," due to rights issues, he says.

There's not much more known about this project, besides that it will be set 2000 years ago and will be as epic as Red Cliff, which was one of the biggest Chinese productions to date. I've started to realize, while reflecting on Woo's work, that it may be that I'm just not fond of his Hollywood films, and that's why I've come to dislike him. I have a feeling Red Cliff will be great and for some reason I'm looking forward to this next one, even though I've previously said I really hate Woo. Luckily for now, he'll stay out of Hollywood. "I will make more Chinese movies, but if I get a better script (from Hollywood) I will do it again."

John Woo to direct Michelle Yeoh in kung fu film

By Mark Pollard on June 21, 2009

Speaking at the Shanghai Film Festival on Sunday, Michelle Yeoh mentioned that she will star in a new kung fu movie co-directed between John Woo and Taiwanese filmmaker Su Chao-pin (SILK). The Chinese-language film is tentatively titled THE SWORD AND THE MARTIAL ARTS WORLD and will begin shooting in China in September.

Despite a supporting role in last year's Jet Li-Jackie Chan adventure film THE FORBIDDEN KINGDOM, the 46-year-old actress has strayed from the action genre in the last few years to take on more dramatic roles. This doesn't mean Yeoh has gone soft. "I have felt physically stronger the past few years. I don't let age limit me," Yeoh said. Michelle Yeoh, the action star, appears to be on the comeback trail with a prominent role in Yuen Woo-ping's upcoming wire-fu actioner TRUE LEGEND.

Yeoh's new film will be Woo's first project since directing the two-part historical war epic RED CLIFF. It's not his first martial arts movie. The Hong Kong helmer is best known for his modern day gunplay actioners in the 1980s and '90s but as many genre fans know, he was once a protégé of legendary martial arts moviemaker Chang Cheh. He began his career directing martial arts movies at Golden Harvest. They include THE DRAGON TAMERS (1975), HAND OF DEATH (1976) featuring a young Jackie Chan and the wuxia classic LAST HURRAH FOR CHIVALRY (1979).

John Woo Returning to WWII with The Flying Tiger Heroes

Chinese director John Woo, who decided to remain in China after finishing his two-part epic Red Cliff, is gearing up to start a new project tentatively titled Flying Tiger Heroes. SlashFilm reports that Woo held a press conference in China to announce the new project, which will have a budget of roughly $161 million (although that seems a bit much for a Chinese production). The film will be about The Flying Tigers, known otherwise as The 1st American Volunteer Group, a fighter squadron that flew missions against the Japanese in World War II. Looks like Woo is giving George Lucas and his WWII Red Tails movie a run for its money.

Woo promises that Flying Tiger Heroes will feature "the most spectacular aerial battle scenes ever seen in Chinese cinema." The Flying Tigers destroyed some 300 enemy aircraft while only suffering 14 causalities during the war. The planes the squadron flew were featured the very recognizable shark-teeth design on the nose (seen in the photo above). "This is an extremely important production," Woo explained. "This Yunnan-themed film emphasizes China-US friendship and the contributions of the Flying Tigers and the people of Yunnan during the War of Resistance." The cast will feature a mix of Hollywood and Chinese movie stars.

Either this means that Woo isn't directing that rumored "Romeo and Juliet War Epic" next or that project has been put on the backburner (or was just a rumor to begin with). I'm not the biggest fan of Woo's work in Hollywood, so if he continues to stay in China and make movies there, maybe I'll actually gain some respect for him again. I'm actually looking forward to seeing these upcoming aerial WWII movies, so bring 'em on!

What Should John Woo Direct Next: Marco Polo or Le Samourai?

I'm admittedly not the biggest fan of Chinese filmmaker John Woo. I've written about my disdain for him many times before, but I'm starting to warm up to him again with every poster and trailer I see for Red Cliff. Earlier this week, Quentin Tarantino revealed that he's got a few projects on his slate to choose from. Much like Tarantino, John Woo has a few projects to choose from as well. Movieline recently interviewed the director (for Red Cliff's US release) and discovered that he's got another ancient epic about Marco Polo in the works as well as a remake of Jean-Pierre Melville's Le Samourai. So which one should he direct next?

"I still have two projects that I like very much," Woo said. "One is trying to remake a French classic called Le Samouraï." That news may surprise Woo fans, since the director already mounted a near-remake of Jean-Pierre Melville’s 1967 crime drama with his Chow Yun-Fat starrer The Killer. However, twenty years have passed since the release of The Killer, and as Woo explained, "I want to make it into a modern film."

As for the second project, it has something in common with Red Cliff, said Woo. "The other is also a historical period film: Marco Polo." He laughed as he revealed that while the ancient Chinese story of the Battle of Red Cliff has long dominated his thoughts, he’s been just as interested in the tales of explorer Marco Polo and his relationship with Kublai Khan. "It's one of my favorite stories," he said.

So which of those two projects would you want to see Woo direct next? Let's not forget that a few years back he decided to up and leave Hollywood and move back to China, to continue making movies there for a few years (out of the studio system). Earlier this year he mentioned he had a "Romeo and Juliet love story" in the works; then he got attached to Flying Tiger Heroes back in July. And he's got that Hard Boiled prequel that's been talked about, although he already said he's not directing that one. So, really, Woo has a lot to choose from, even though he only mentioned two projects to Movieline.

Tom Cruise Potentially Reteaming with John Woo for Flying Tigers

John Woo's new World War II film Flying Tigers has been in the works for some time now. The fighter squadron story emerged last December when it was part of a trio of projects that Tom Cruise was circling. Since then John Woo announced that he was making the Christopher McQuarrie and Mason Alley scripted picture his next project, but there's been no further updates. Now that all changes in a packed story from Variety about New Regency's upcoming projects, we almost missed the brief mention that Tom Cruise is attached to Flying Tigers, marking his grand return to the cockpit for the first time since 1986's Top Gun.

ComingSoon also caught up with Woo recently and here's what he had to say about Flying Tigers:

"It's based on a true story in WWII, about a group of American volunteer fighter pilots who worked with the Chinese Air Force fighting with the Japanese and they won the war. Also, it's the story of Clair Chennault, and they did a great contribution for the Chinese, and the Chinese people love and respect them. The whole story is about a friendship between a Chinese and an American and [how] they worked together."

That seems like it might have been a rough translation, but we still get the idea. Aside from being a reunion for Cruise and Woo, writer Christopher McQuarrie also worked with Cruise on last year's Valkyrie, which turned out well. I've always been a fan of high flying battles, and though there have been attempts to bring back some aviation combat action, movies like Flyboys and the futuristic Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow just haven't been up to par. But if this combination of talent actually comes together, I think we're in store for quite an adrenaline rush. As long as Cruise decides to take this on next following Wichita.

Jianyu Jianghu Stills Come out!

Quote
This first batch of John Woo-produced romantic martial art thriller 'Jianyu Jianghu' starring Malaysian Michelle Yeoh and South Korean Jung Woo-sung are released online Friday.

The filming has been continuing in Hengdian film base, Zhejiang Province.

Taiwan director Su Chaopin said on Thursday that the film is customized for Michelle Yeoh, who plays an assassin who falls in love with a man whose father was killed by her gang and gives up on her assassin's life.

South Korean actor Jung Woo-Song from 'A Good Rain Knows' will play her love interest, whose character is also a trained martial artist.

Their love blossoms but then the past comes back to haunt them.

Michelle Yeoh never disappoints audiences as a daring heroine and she is as calm and composed as in her role in Ang Lee's 'Crouching Tiger and Hidden Dragon.'

"Jianyu Jiangwu", literally "the rain of swords in the martial art world", also stars actors Barbie Hsu, Kelly Lin, Shawn Yu and Wang Xueqi.

The film is slated for release during this National Day holiday.

John Woo's "Flying Tigers" Comes in IMAX
2010-08-20 16:34:11     CRIENGLISH.com       Web Editor: zhucheng

Director John Woo's latest film "Flying Tigers," set to start shooting this fall, will be released in IMAX format according to the report of Hollywoodreporter.com.

Woo will work with the Creative Artists Agency and IMAX in an effort to bring a larger than life quality to his roughly $90 million 1940s war film which will feature epic aerial battles.

Woo said that he hopes to cast Liam Neeson in the leading role of Chennault. Chinese actor Liu Ye is likely to star opposite Neeson as a trainee pilot in the film.

Liu last appeared in a leading role in Lu Chuan's Nanjing Massacre picture "City of Life and Death" and plays the part of Mao Zedong in the Communist Party of China (CPC) anniversary film "Jian Dang Wei Ye," which is currently in production.

"Flying Tigers" is based on a story well known in China and the US. General Chennault's Flying Tigers squadron flew successful missions around the southwest cities against the raiding Japanese while also transporting supplies to Chinese forces.

"Flying Tigers" is currently in pre-production and will be released in 2011.

John Woo's new multi-million dollar martial arts film "Reign of Assassins" set up its official website on Thursday, August 19, and released posters of the twelve leading roles.

Director John Woo, actors Wang Xueqi, Shawn Yue, Leon Dai, Guo Xiaodong and Li Zonghan attended the press conference in Beijing. At the conference, director Woo said he would like to be Jing Ke, a famous assassin during the Warring States period, if he could be a historical martial arts figure.

The upcoming film, budgeted at 14 million dollars, stars Michelle Yeoh, Jung Woo-Sung, Wang Xueqi, Barbie Hsu, Shawn Yue, Kelly Lin, Leon Dai, Paw Hee-Ching, Pace Wu, Guo Xiaodong, Li Zonghan and Jiang Yiyan. The all-star film has popularly been called the "film without a supporting role."

John Woo, praised for his ability to depict the friendship between men in his work, has decided to turn his attention on women. The director explained, "'Reign of Assassins' is not a film that simply focuses on kung-fu and hatred. In fact, it tells a romantic love story.''

However, all his actresses were absent from the conference. When the five main actors were asked about their collaboration with the actresses, , Dai summarized that Michelle Yeoh had strong and tender tempers in the same body, while Barbie Hsu was good at performing and very accurate.

In the posters, the twelve astrological horoscopes are used to describe each character. For instance, Michelle Yeoh, of course, is a Pisces girl, and actor Wang Xueqi belongs to Leo.

At the conference, the five actors were divided into two groups, a group of good guys and a group of bad guys, according to their characters in the film.

The three actors in the group of villains, Wang Xueqi, Leon Dai and Shawn Yue, described their combination as a cleaning company, which takes charge of killing aliens. They also showed off their own weapons, such as sword, double blades and a pair of long chopsticks.

The film will be released nationwide on September 28.

John Woo Honored in Venice
2010-09-04 10:50:06     Xinhua       Web Editor: Zhang Jin

Venice Film Festival artistic director Marco Mueller said that telling Chinese filmmaker John Woo he would be presented with the venerable festival's Golden Lion career honor had all the drama of one of Woo's films.

"At first, he said 'No, no, no, I don't deserve it,'" Mueller recalled Friday during a briefing for the award. "It took a lot of deep convincing from me and [long-time Woo collaborator] Terence Chang. But I don't feel we are bestowing an honor here. The prize was simply there waiting for him."

With Friday's award, Woo joins the ranks of the cinema industry giants who have won the award before him, including Orson Wells, Igmar Bergman, Luis Buuel, Akira Kurosawa, Federico Fellini, Francis Ford Coppola, Steven Spielberg, and Stanley Kubrick.

The career Golden Lion prize has been presented to 80 people before this year, but Friday is the first time a Chinese figure has been so honored.

"When Marco called me, my first reaction was shock," Woo told reporters. "Then I thought he might be joking. Then I felt emotional, and finally I was just grateful."

The 63-year-old Woo -- best known for his 1987 classic A Better Tomorrow and The Killer two years later -- said he dedicated the Golden Lion prize to his mother, who he said was the first person to take him to the cinema and who encouraged him to follow his cinematic dreams, and to fellow director Cheh Chang, Woo's mentor, who died eight years ago at the age of 79.

Woo was officially presented the prize in a black tie ceremony several hours after the briefing in Venice's sold-out Palazzo del Cinema, just before the world premiere of Reign of Assassins, the thriller Woo co-directed with Chao-Bin Su. Terence Chang is the producer of the film, which tells the story of a skilled assassin in ancient China.

The Reign of Assassins is Woo's third film -- following epics Red Cliff and Red Cliff II -- since Woo returned to China two years ago, after making films exclusively in Hollywood for more than 15 years, where blockbuster titles to his credit include " Broken Arrow," "Face/Off," and "Mission Impossible 2."

"I learned a lot in my years in Hollywood, and I wanted to bring what I learned back to Asia," Woo said. All three films he has made since his return blend aspects of Chinese and Hollywood traditions, according to Woo.

On Friday, he said his respect for both Chinese and Hollywood filmmaking makes him a natural ambassador for each culture to the other.

"I want to be like a bridge between cultures," Woo said. "I want to link the best from east and west in my work. I'm back in China now, but I'm not done working in Hollywood. I want to keep working in both places."

He said future projects will include his first IMAX film " Flying Tigers," a Hollywood-style remake of his award winning Chinese action film The Killer, and another remake, of the 1967 French classic "Le Samourai," originally made by Jean-Paul Melville.

This is Woo's fourth trip to Venice. He has never had a film screen in competition at the world's oldest film festival, but he was the head of the festival's 2004 "Secret History of Asian Film" initiative, he directed one of the three episodes of "All the Invisible Children," which screened out of competition in the festival in 2006, and he was the producer behind Alexi Tan's Blood Brothers, the closing film in Venice the following year.

The 67th Venice Film Festival, which called Friday "John Woo Day," got underway Wednesday and will conclude Sept. 11.

Director John Woo's new swordsman film, "Reign of Assassins," billed as a "five-star commercial swordsmen film," premiered and held a press conference in Hangzhou on Tuesday, September 14, m1905.com reports.

Woo, lead actor Wang Xueqi, Barbie Hsu, Li Zonghan and Woo's daughter Angeles, who is also in the film, attended.

Wang Xueqi gave a surprising performance as the bad guy in this film, a rare appearance among his previous films. His fight scenes are also surprisingly good and won high praise from audiences.

"We saw a different Wang in this film. I admire his spirit of self-challenge," said a viewer.

Another of Wang's highlights in the film is his relationship with Barbie Hsu's character. Moviegoers said they were taken aback at the age difference - Wong is 64 and Hsu is 34 - but the previews prove the love story is well done.

Viewers said although "Reign of Assassins" is a swordsman film, it gets off the beaten track of bloody fighting, showing the natural and genuine sides of the swordsmen.

Wang Xueqi has been well-known to Chinese audiences for his role as a hero in military films and TV dramas. He won the best actor award at the Asian Film Awards this year for "Bodyguards and Assassins" (2009).

"Reign of Assassins" will hit Chinese cinemas on Sept. 28, 2010.

World-renowned Chinese filmmaker John Woo has released an Internet-based animated series that is adapted from the graphic novel "Seven Brothers" that he co-created.

The first four episodes of the 13-episode series are now available on Machinima, an online video entertainment network which registers more than one billion views per month via its YouTube channel, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

New episodes of "Seven Brothers" will be distributed every two weeks.

Woo created the original graphic novel with comics writer Garth Ennis and artist Jeevan J. Kang. The story is set 600 years ago, showing how mighty Chinese treasure fleets set sail to reach every continent and how these voyages of discovery left behind an evil legacy as well as a plot by a powerful sorcerer to dominate the world. Now, in modern-day Los Angeles, an ancient prophecy must be fulfilled and seven men, with nothing in common but their destinies, must save the world.

"For me, working in comics is quite comfortable - it's like the ultimate storyboard," Woo was quoted by The Hollywood Reporter as saying. "The original 'Seven Brothers' graphic novel, and this new animated series, take the seed of an idea I had about famous Chinese folklore to a whole new level."

Woo collaborated with Liquid Comics and Tiger Hill Entertainment in launching the Web series.

The director is best-known by Western audiences for films he made during his years in Hollywood such as "Mission: Impossible 2" and "Face/Off".

His upcoming feature film will be a romantic story set in 1940s China, set to star Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi and South Korean actress Song Hye-kyo.

John Woo to Remake "The Killer" in English
2012-05-18 15:33:24     CRIENGLISH.com       Web Editor: Duanlei

John Woo has agreed to remake his 1980s classic "The Killer" in English, Sina.com reports.

South Korean director John H. Lee will direct the new version alongside the film's producer John Woo. The 1989 version was written and directed by John Woo, and starred Chow Yun-fat, Danny Lee and Sally Yeh. It tells the story of an assassin who accidentally damages the vision of a female singer during a shootout. In order to get the money to pay for the girl's treatment, the assassin decides to perform one last hit.

Chinese actress Li Yan is expected to take the role of the singer. At present, the male leads remain undecided, but it has been rumored that a number of Hollywood's A-list actors are being considered.

John Woo said that "The Killer" was one of his favorite films and he hopes that director Lee and his cast can inject new life into the story. The English version is due to be released next summer.

[2013.06.15] JOHN WOO'S NEW FILM SELECTS TAKESHI KANESHIRO AND HUANG XIAOMING

International director John Woo (Ng Yu Sum) took a break to recover from illness. After five years, LOVE AND LET LOVE recently announced its July production start and confirmed that Takeshi Kaneshiro (Gum Sing Mo) and Huang Xiaoming to be its lead actors opposite lead actresses Zhang Ziyi and Song Hye-Kyo. Originally Song Hye-Kyo was to pair with Chang Chen, but due to scheduling issues he finally turned it down. Xiaoming was not afraid of being the "second choice". When he received the invitation he agreed without any hesitation. He felt that being able to work with Ng Yu Sum would be able to widen his performing art vision. However Xiaoming's manager has been quiet and said that it was inconvenient to make any response.

Not sure how I feel about this, classic movie like this being remake doesn't sound like a good idea to me.  Especially an American version.  Hopefully they don't cast someone like Tom Cruise in Chow Yun Fat's role.
