Ex-Habs coach Demers appointed to the Senate
Posted: August 27, 2009, 6:02 PM by Jeremy Sandler

Jacques Demers is the last man to coach a Canadian team to the Stanley Cup but his next business as an Ottawa senator will have nothing to do with the NHL.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper named the Montreal native, who just celebrated his 65th birthday, to the upper chamber on Thursday.

Demers, who led the Montreal Canadiens to the 1993 Stanley Cup and also coached St. Louis, Detroit and Tampa Bay in his NHL career, currently works as a hockey analyst for the French language sports television station RDS.

His greatest fame in recent years came with the release of his autobiography in 2005 in which he revealed that he was functionally illiterate during his days in the NHL.

In a story on the RDS web site, Demers said on July 13 someone working for the Prime Minister first contacted him about sitting in the Senate.

“"This person told me I was one of Mr. Harper's choices and he wanted to know if I was interested,” said Demers, who stands to make $130,000 a year fulfilling his duties as a member of the Red Chamber. “I answered that I would be very honoured to be a senator. Mr. Harper contacted me a few days later."

Demers will be the second hockey personality sitting in Canada’s Senate, joining longtime member and Hockey Hall of Famer Frank Mahovlich.

Jacques Demers?  Is he still functionally illiterate?  Or can he get by to be in the Senate?  Not exactly what the Canadian government needs, but if the guy can do his job and follow direction, then I guess more power to him.  Get ready for the field day that the media will have with him all over again tho.

Canucks acquired Christian Ehrhoff and Brad Lukowich from SJ for a bag of pucks!

Canucks now have a pretty good Defensive core with Mathieu Schneider signing with us sooner or later though we are now 3 million over cap limit with Mats "LOOK AT ME IM A POKER STAR!" Sundin not yet signed. Hopefully we trade Kevin Bieksa away + a fwd to free up some cap and sign a scoring fwd.

WATCH OUT LOLERS! YOU GOING DOWN!

Luongo signed a 12-year contract extension  :shocked  that's a long long time.  At $10 million for the first year, it makes me want to change professions and become an NHL goalie

Nah man, this is Roberto Luongo, not Rick DiPietro.  Luongo can back his shit up.  Once Brodeur retires, he'll be the #1 goaltender in Canada.  I think that's a safe investment, unless he gets injured ... like DiPietro did.

I dunno. Stuff can change fast.

How long did it take Hasek to go from "#1 Best Evar" to has-been? 3 years, maybe 4?

^already did!

it doesnt really matter though, the contract is front loaded anyway. the salary cap hit will be 5.3 mil per year from luongo's contract. thats a steal for an elite goaltender. so for the duration of 12 years with the canucks, only about 5.3 million will be taken from the overall team salary cap.  :thumbsup

Hasek still got himself a Stanley Cup after 2000 when his groin injury kicked in.  He'd been playing for a while by then, about as long as Luongo has played now.  I like this decision because he can be the face of the team, and he seems to like life in Vancouver.  Who wouldn't?  I'd live there if I made that kinda money.  I just don't know about trying to lock in the twins, that'll be interesting to see how long they want to stay.

Sooo, Dan Cloutier (former enforcer/canuck) was granted a try out with the Red Wings. How will he look Niklas Lidstrom in the eyes after this happened? LOL

Oilers sign Comrie to one-year deal

General Manager Steve Tambellini announced today the Edmonton Oilers have agreed to terms with centre Mike Comrie on a one-year contract. Comrie, originally drafted by Edmonton in the third round (91st overall) in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, rejoins the Oilers after having played here from 2000-2003. The 28-year-old has also played for the Philadelphia Flyers, Phoenix Coyotes, New York Islanders and Ottawa Senators. Comrie has posted 154 goals and 184 assists for 338 points in 525 games in the NHL. Last season, Comrie started the year with the Islanders before being dealt to the Senators with Chris Campoli for Dean McAmmond and a 1st round pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. Comrie enjoyed one of his finest seasons with the Oilers when he scored a career-high 60 points in 2001-02.

LOL

I think hell has just froze over, either that or it just shows how desperate Edmonton is and that no one else wants to sign in that city.

Comrie held out on the Oilers, so the Oilers worked out a trade with Anaheim to send Comrie to the Ducks for Corey Perry and a 1st round pick, Lowe then demanded Comrie to repay part of his bonuses to the Oilers at which point Comrie told Lowe to go fuck himself haaahahaha
